Page Mindset and Mental Preparedness Self-Defense can be summed up in a variety of methods, actions and planning. The bottom line is the overall ability of a person (Victim) having the mental mindset and preparedness to do whatever it takes to avoid, temporarily overpower, and escape any such attacker against their person. In the absence of such preparedness, an overwhelming number of people freeze not understanding or knowing what their options are. Unfortunately, there is no 100% guarantee for every defensive attack option. However, the chances of a well prepared or even a slightly prepared person can in fact change the outcome of an attack by utilizing techniques and combinations thereof. Refusing to become a statistical number (Victim) is the first step Stages of Awareness of your surroundings and environment There are four (4) stages or categories of awareness that you should always be conscious of. 1. Unaware 2. Aware 3. Alert 4. Alarm The most important aspect to know and understand is the concept of surprise. Most all attacks happen as a surprise or blitz attack whereas the victim is either unaware or completely caught off guard. Knowing your surroundings and situations can greatly affect your outcome of most any attack. Almost all these attacks will always strike within 3 to 5 feet of the victim. Unfortunately, the attacker knows exactly when he/she/they will attack. The victim on the other hand does not know this time and thus must be on guard The Defensive Mindset The defensive minds set is best described as a combination of the conscience and the unconscious acting together in a life altering event such as an attack upon your person. Referred to as muscle memory, it is the body s unconscious actions of self-preservation that acts. All persons have the same self-preservation mindset; it s just that most don t know how to use them. As bad or uncomfortable as it may seem, you may have to curse or utilize foul language with a harshness tone. Cursing or the use of vulgar words can be an effective means of breaking an attacker s own mindset; this is especially true with female victims. Your defensive mindset is not only designed to make you ready for an attack or avoiding one but can also be used to get into the mindset of the attacker and scramble their original plans. The purpose of developing a defensive mindset is to train your mind and body for an immediate self-defense reaction when required or needed. (Muscle Memory) Fear is by far the most powerful mindset an attacker can utilize against his or her victim. It is imperative that the person being attacked control their fear. Easier said than done right? You must change your perception of the events that are about to unfold. Fighting off an attacker isn t just brute strength but a combination of strength and smarts (Brains).

Page4 A fearful person emits fear like a flashing beacon. We need to change that. How this is effectively done is to change your mindset of the situation. Fear not what the attacker MAY do to you but concentrate on what you WILL do to him/her. Visualize yourself striking the blows, breaking a finger, breaking the foot and even gauging out an eyeball. This visualization not only builds your confidence needed to prevail but helps you focus on the task at hand. Self-preservation will quickly surface emitting quite a different outlook for the attacker. The attacker will ALWAYS utilize the element of surprise. You need to strip that from them and create a level and even battle field. M.P.O.W.E.R. Make eye contact (Eliminate their surprise attack) Posture if needed (Turn and face to show you are not going to be easy) On Guard (Be aware of any and all other threats around you) Weapons (Arm yourself with any sort of weapon at your disposal, i.e. keys, Kubaton, pen, tool, etc.) Educate (Think, and Visualize to yourself what you are going to do to them rather worrying about getting hurt) Ready yourself (Ready yourself for action or a confrontation) voice (Loud voice commands, creates witnesses, offsets attacker s modus operandi) 1.4. Willingness to use Force in self-defense Your willingness to use force in self-preservation is by far the most effective means of prevailing an attack. Just as a mother bear will fight another bear 2 and even 3 times her size to protect her cubs. 99% of the time, the mother bear wins because she is fighting for life and not food. This is a self-preservation and protection response Determination Never to Give Up, FIGHT! The decision not to give up but rather fight for your life is the proper mindset. Unfortunately, law enforcement will be the first to tell you that they (COPS) are the second line of defense. YOU are the first line of your own defense. The average response time is between 14 minutes for law enforcement to arrive on scene. Most attacks are over and done with within 3 to 5 minutes or less. Law enforcement can only attempt to make it to you as soon as they can, depending all upon where you rank on the response system. Furthermore, in order to have the police respond to your attack you must be able to notify them or hopefully someone else has notified them that you are being attacked Developing a Plan Developing a defensive plan is by far the best means of preventing or prevailing in any such attack. Plan your evasions, escapes, and even your counter attacks. Visualize them, practice them because you will not be warned to get ready, and you MAY NOT have a second chance Visualization and Physical Practice You should practice visualizing yourself in mock scenarios and look at multiple outcomes pertaining to your response of avoiding an attack, taking action against it, and prevailing from it. Many tacticians in the military think like this as well as teach their soldiers to do the same. THINK, VISUALIZE, OVERCOME, then ACT! Muscle memory is nothing more than a body s reflex or reaction to an action. Everyone has some degree of muscle memory such as reaching for a cigarette without even thinking about it, raising your arms

Page5 in self-defense to protect your face when someone makes a slapping move towards your face. We also know them as habits. There are good habits and there are bad habits. Habits, good or bad can be broken and even learned by repeating the particular habit for 21 days. Your body and mind basically programs itself during those 21 days to perform that function without having to think to do it. The association to muscle memory or habits to pain is NOT something you want to practice. Remember that you are training your mind and body to react, and it will very fast; even before you realize what you have done. By the time you realize what your reaction has done, it is already over. 21 DAYS is all it takes Defensive Break and Release Techniques Release techniques MUST be practiced as these are perishable skills. Release techniques are not designed for a defensive strike but a release allowing you the window of opportunity to evade and escape. However, the attacker s grip and power against you can be a very vital tool in your favor. These simple release techniques must be performed with speed and surprise to be effective. You can change to offset of being caught by surprise by an attacker to actually surprising the attacker into confusion. Most Common Release Techniques. These techniques are not required to be performed in order but rather options for your response as the situation calls for. A. Front Wrist Grab i. Step in quick as you fold elbow upwards into attacker. ii. Target the attacker s trachea with the free hand while performing maneuver. iii. Target attacker s groin with a sharp knee upwards. B. Arm Grab i. Quickly raise captured straight up as you slightly twist it. ii. Target the attacker s trachea with the free hand while performing maneuver. iii. Target attacker s groin with a sharp knee upwards. C. Front Choke Hold i. Praying hands quickly upwards to break hold ii. Target the attacker s trachea. iii. Target attacker s eyes iv. Quickly bring your knee upwards into the groin D. Bear Hug Grab i. Hammer fist to groin. ii. Quickly throw head backwards for a mouth/nose strike. (Be ready for a bit of dizziness) iii. Fast and hard stomp to the top of the foot near ankle. E. Half Sleeper The all too famous sleeper/choke hold from the rear is by far the most complex control hold there is. The break/release from this hold requires practice, speed and the determination to prevail. In most all cases, the attacker will use this hold in one of two methods: 1. To physically control the victim so as to warn her or him what the attacker will do if they are not compliant.

Page6 2. DANGER WITH THIS ONE. To immobilize the victim by depriving him/her of oxygen. This can happen within 10 to 13 seconds if the attacker is familiar with this particular hold. Victim needs to act extremely fast; quickly turn head into attacker s elbow to prevent your immediate blackout. i. Drop chin into elbow and use free hand to stab elbow. ii. Hammer fist groin. iii. Quickly throw head backwards for a mouth/nose strike. (Be ready for a bit of dizziness) 2.2. Defensive Striking with Power These techniques are utilized as an attack upon the attacker with speed and effectiveness. These techniques will most definitely confuse the attacker and place him/her into their own defensive mode of protection allowing you the window to evade and escape. A. Front Wrist Grab B. Arm Grab C. Front Choke Hold D. Bear Hug Grab E. Half Sleeper The victim can create the power of a strike no matter what their size. Practicing and visualization are the primary keys Necessity Strikes These types of strikes are only used as a necessity strike due to the complexity and the risk of self-injury. In the event that you feel or know that your efforts of escape are NOT gaining your escape, you must consider utilizing one or more or a combination of these necessity strikes. Necessity strikes will utilize your body as a weapon and if not performed correctly can result in a self-induced injury. These types of strikes REQUIRE PRACTICE and PROPER FORM. A. The Ridged Fingers J. The Forward Head Butt B. The Stabbing Thumb K. The Rear Head Butt C. The Closed Fist L. The Outside Elbow D. The Hammer Fist M. The Elbow Point E. The Open Hand N. The Upper Knee F. The Hand Chop O. The Heal G. The Forearm Elbow P. The Shin (Scrape) H. Single Hand Ear Drum Compression I. Double Hand Ear Drum Compression 2.4. Types of Common Attacks There are many types of attacks against a person. We are only addressing the most common types for now. It should be known that you should never allow yourself to be forced to the ground. Your options of self-defense are seriously diminished, and escape will require everything you can muster. A. Side and Frontal Attack B. Surprise Attack C. Distraction Attack

Page7 D. Rear Attack E. Ambush Attack (In Parking Lot) F. Ambush Attack (In Private) A. Side and Frontal Attack This type of attack is considered an innocent walk by. The deliberate look away by the attacker should be the first sign or the focusing on you. Using his or her peripheral vision, they can see things around them that you the victim are not paying any attention too. B. Surprise Attack This type of attack is usually carried out from cover and/or concealment. Underneath your very own vehicle if possible; from another vehicle such as a truck or van, and even from an innocent person loading items into a vehicle beside you. C. Distraction Attack (Most Common) This is usually a team effort for a single goal. One person might try asking you directions or a simple question while the other makes their way up behind you. Another rouse would be the broken car with the hood up and is usually performed by a female. A male attacker can also use this method asking for a battery jump. These types of attacks are not limited to a single attacker only. All the person has to do is distract you for a split second. When someone such as a stranger approach you, look around. If you see another person close, quickly look at the original person approaching you then back to the stranger. Move yourself into position where you can see both or simple tell the original person to stop and/or back off as you reach into your purse or under your shirt. Perception is a most powerful tool. The perception to the attacker that you are reaching for a concealed weapon, even if you don t have one, can in itself completely thwart the entire attack scenario. Attacker will simply walk away and choose someone else. If this happens, 911 should be notified in order to help another person that doesn t have your mindset or training. It may be a truly innocent person trying to ask a simple question. However, it could be a distraction ploy to keep you off guard as well. I would rather be called a nut-job than wake up in the ER or worse.

Page8 D. Rear Attack This type is always from a dark or not well-lit area. Be mindful where you park, even during the day because it maybe dark when you exit. Be mindful of the one percenters. These are the attackers that don t care about the lighting but rather their opportunity to score. It should be known that very seldom does the attacker employ the choke hold with both hands in this type of attack also known as the sleeper hold. Usually the attacker will wrap one arm around the neck while grabbing the victims arm for further control. DANGER. The sleeper hold utilizes both arms wrapped around the victim s neck. The sleeper hold will completely immobilize a person within 10 seconds or less depending on its application. If applied properly, the time is usually 7 to 8 seconds before a blackout occurs. You don t have a lot of time to react. E. Ambush Attack (Parking Lot) This is one of the most dangerous due to the area. This type of attack is a blitz hit usually causing physical damage to the victim. The idea is to put the victim down as soon as possible, take advantage, punch, kick then steal. You must be completely aware of your surroundings including how many people and where they are located. Knowing this can buy you time to evade and escape once the ambush has been exposed. F. Ambush Attack (Private) This is the most dangerous due to the area. This type of attack is a blitz hit usually causing physical damage to the victim. The idea is to put the victim down as soon as possible, take advantage, punch, kick then steal. The difference is the private setting. The attacker has plenty of time to do what he or she wishes to do to the victim. You must be completely aware of your surroundings including how many people and where they are located. Knowing this can buy you time to evade and escape once the ambush has been exposed Defensive Tools Defensive tools can be anything that you have in your immediate possession that can hurt, injure, or stop an attacker from harming you. Simple items such as keys or writing pens can be effective self-defense tools.

Page9 The problem you will have if you are not prepared is that you WILL NOT have the time to think about what you have in your purse or on your person to react. You MUST plan ahead. Plan for the worst and hope for the best Tool Techniques How to use these tools will be the difference between life and death. If you do not practice with it/them, you WILL NOT have the proper technique to perform it effectively. Some 30% of people who carry a weapon for self-defense become the victim of their own weapon during an attack. How? These same people believe that they know what to do when in fact they don t know the proper technique of use. The weapon is quickly taken from the victim and used by the attacker. In other words, the victim brought the actual weapon that will be used against them to the attack. DON T BE A VICTIM, GET EDUCATED AND BE AWARE! Self-Defense Tools can make all the difference in prevailing from an attack upon your person. Although these items are the most common used, they are unfortunately greatly MISUNDERSTOOD and MISREPRESENTED AS NON-LETHAL DEVICES. For clarification, a simple pocket pen can be a lethal device if used in that manner. Thusly, these tools can cause permanent injuries even death if used incorrectly. This is the reason for certified trainers. The certified trainer can demonstrate and train an individual how to utilize these tools as non lethal devices and effectively escape an attack. Will the proper training of these tools stop injuries? NO. However, the proper training can mitigate the injury to an attacker thusly limiting if not eliminating your liability of the injury. Make no mistake, your objective is to escape by any means at your deposal. As with police, civilian can also perform excessive force in certain situations. DISCLOSURE: As with any self-defense device no matter how it is first presented or designed cannot be utilized in an offensive manner. These devices are designed as a defensive device only. Any use in an offensive manner can and most likely will result in criminal prosecution and civil liabilities. All self-defense devices no matter the design should never be used as an intimidating factor or offensive manner but ONLY in SELF-DEFENSE. Check your local laws. The Self-Defense Tool/Light: This device is used to temporarily disable an attacker s hands, arms and legs by nerve and muscle shock. The point is NOT a writing pen but a hardened point to break glass. The device can also be utilized to impale appendages such as hands, arms, legs and feet causing severe pain and if performed properly, the device can temporarily stun the nerve system of that appendage allowing you to flee. The ASP Baton:

Page10 This device is also a self-defense tool but primarily designed as a Pain Compliance device. This tool requires proper training. Any use without the proper training can result in serious injury and/or death. The OC Spray: OC or OS sprays can be a serious deterrent when used properly. Causing temporary blindness, difficulty breathing, disorientation, and skin burning, this device is most effective. However, the major drawback to using this device is that the user will most likely be exposed to the spray as well causing the same effects. Proper training is highly recommended. Spraying in the face and upper chest is the primary target. The vapors will travel upwards into the mouth, eye, and nose. Spraying the contents directly into the mouth can severely impede the ability to breathe. Spraying directly into the eyes from a distance is acceptable but not close up as the spray is under pressure and can result in permanent sight damage. However, it should be made clear that in the event that you have no other choice in selfpreservation, YOU MUST DO WHATEVER YOU MUST TO SURVIVE and let the police decide your liability from the situation. In a situation of an attack, you should have no issues with whatever device you used and how you used it provided THE USE WAS NOT OFFENSIVE. In the King s English, if you utilized any self-defense device in an offensive manner you most likely will be guilty of assault with a weapon or device. Offensive is defined within this booklet as the aggressor/attacker. Your mind set pertaining to a dangerous or threatening encounter should always have the same fundamental elements: BE AWARE OF YOUR SURROUNDINGS BE READY TO REACT DON T BECOME A VICTIM NEVER GIVE UP ITEMS THAT CAN BE USED AS SELF-DEFENSE TOOLS: Car Keys Standard Ink Pen Metal Nail File Pocket Knife Flashlight Tactical Defense Pen Kubaton Collapsible Mini Baton Pepper Spray Any item that can stab, cut or be used as a blunt object in your favor can be a potential selfdefense tool. Think outside the normal box. Criminals do!
