City of Orlando Orlando Police Department SELF-DEFENSE TRAINING 6
Self-defense training Are you prepared to defend yourself? 7
8
SITUATIONAL AWARENESS: What is my situation? Am I aware of my surroundings? THREAT ASSESSMENT: What is the potential threat and how should I deal with it? ESCAPE AND EVASION PLAN: How do I avoid or escape the situation? 9
IMMEDIATE ACTION DRILLS: Speed-Surprise- Aggression! ATTACK/DEFENSE DRILLS: Fight back and/or defend. PRE-EMPTIVE SELF-DEFENSE: She who strikes first usually wins. Ernest Emerson (Paraphrase) 10
My actions are a result of your actions. Bruce Lee Colonel Cooper s awareness color code system : You are unprepared and unready to take lethal action. If attacked, you will probably never know what hit you. 2. YELLOW: You begin to understand that your life/safety is in danger and you may have to take action. 3. ORANGE: You have identified the threat/adversary and prepare to take defensive/offensive action. 11
4. RED: You are in combat mode and will fight/shoot/take any action necessary to survive/win if necessary! 5. BLACK: Your senses have overloaded and you shut down completely! You are of no use to yourself or the people who might have to depend on you. 12
The Three Ds of Survival 2. DENY! 3. DESTROY! 13
OODA Loop: The process the human mind goes through when faced with danger or startling situations. Observe: You observe/see the event unfolding. Orient: Your mind orients or attempts to orient the event. Decide: Your mind decides that there is a threat and/or you are in danger. Act: Your mind tells your body to act! 14
What kind of target are you? Be a warrior! 15
CRIME PREVENTION THROUGH ENVIRONMENTAL DESIGN (CPTED) CPTED IN PARKING LOTS: Very little time is devoted to parking designs in typical architectural education programs, and assignments for such projects are often relegated to the most inexperienced members of the architectural teams. As a result, active security systems are often needed to correct problems created by architectural designs that failed to incorporate CPTED. 16
ROOT YOURSELF IN THIS PRESENT MOMENT. IS REAL. FEAR IS A CHOICE. 17
To properly defend yourself, you must learn how to block and/or evade an attack. High block: intended to protect the head from an overhead strike (typically by some type of weapon). Middle block: intended to protect the head and face blows or strikes coming the left or right. Deflection block: intended to deflect or redirect a punch, stab. Or grab. 18

Low block: intended to stop and/or deflect a kick to the groin area or lower extremities. Emergency block: This block is intended to protect the face and head from surprise and/or multiple strike attack. The defender covers the face while using the elbows to block. The intention is to try to get the attacker to injure his/her hand on the defender s elbows. 25
