Jim Wagner Reality-Based Personal Protection HANDGUN SURVIVAL Student Course Outline: September 2015 Lesson 10 Purpose of the course: To safely conduct air gun training for Reality- Based Personal Protection courses, and to have basic knowledge and skill sets. This course is not intended to qualify the student to conduct live-fire training. Briefing 1. Safety Rules a. The words Cease Fire! called out by anyone or a whistle blow stops the class and all weapons must be made CLEAR & SAFE and holstered immediately (or placed on tray or table for some facilities) 2. Training Schedule a. This course taught in 3 phases i. Safety ii. Shooting Positions & Movement iii. Tactics b. Terminology (trainer, trainee, instructor/range Safety Officer-RSO) i. RSO will ensure that all policies, regulations, and procedures are strictly enforced. ii. The classroom is the Range PHASE I Section 1. Gun Safety 1.01 Issue Air Gun TREAT AIR GUN LIKE A REAL FIREARM A) EYE PROTECTION ON 1) Always on during disassembling, assembling and on the range 1.02 Gun Safety Rules A) Treat all firearms as though they are loaded (ready to fire) B) Always point the muzzle in a safe direction C) Keep shooting finger indexed to avoid Negligent Discharge (ND) D) Alcohol, drugs, and medication and firearms do not mix. E) Make sure the weapon is clean and clear of obstructions.

2 F) NEVER point a weapon at someone, unless you intend to shoot them G) Know the laws H) Keep handguns away from children! Lock them up. Criminal and civil liability Range Safety Rules (The Training Facility is the Range) A) COLD RANGE, indicated by no range flag, means no weapons may be touched B) HOT RANGE, indicated by a red range flag or red placard, means that weapons are being handled C) Never touch your handgun unless instructed to by the Range Master D) Do not load speed loaders or magazines unless instructed to do so E) Always wear eye and ear protection (ear protection not required with Air Guns) F) Stay on the firing line until instructed to leave G) COLD LINE means that all weapons are hostered I) HOT LINE means that shooters may fire at targets J) Keep weapon pointed down range at all times (muzzle discipline) K) Raise your hand high above your head for questions L) Keep handgun holstered when not firing, and when a drill is over M) Never handle a handgun when someone or something is down range (people, animals, low flying aircraft above) N) Know what is beyond the target (Backdrop) O) Load & unload all weapons on the firing line ONLY P) Any item dropped on the firing line DO NOT PICK IT UP, and wait until the line is cold Q) Load magazines at loading table only (portable table is acceptable) R) In the event of an injury notify the RSO/Range Master Section 2.
