Pleasant Valley has been very supportive of its library which has made 3 moves during its more than 100 years. In 1972 when the library moved to its present location, the town's population was While 4800 sq. feet was sufficient at that time, the town's population has increased 50% in the last 45 years. page 2 of 33
Our library is open and waiting for you! Thanks to our volunteers and financial efficiency, we have some of the best hours in the area, as well as being ranked among the busiest. page 3 of 33
There are a wide variety of reasons people use the library, from programs, help with information, meeting space, story-times, notary services, job help and much more. Photo by Milton Ma Public Library page 4 of 33
Last year, the public pcs (there are 6) were used 7343 times and our wi-fi was logged on to with patron devices 6495 times. The website received 29,000 hits. Over 3000 ebooks were downloaded. And over 150 tech help appointments were made. Photo by Nebraska Library Commission page 5 of 33
Efficiency is defined as the amount of materials borrowed by patrons divided by the amount of paid staff available. Our library is ranked the most efficient for the staff available, as well as offering the best evening hours for the staff available. Our checkouts are 6th system-wide, out of 66 libraries. Photo by Clearwater Public Library System Photos page 6 of 33
There has been no funding increase in 6 years, yet no services have been cut. It is important to note that while being an association library keeps costs down, it does mean that we are not a public library and therefore CANNOT bond for a new building. Photo by Great Beyond page 7 of 33
Last year our librarians answered over 31,000 reference questions. We assisted in over 150 technical support questions. Offered over 400 programs to all ages on a wide variety of topics, from traditional story times to beekeeping and local history. Photo by Utah State Library page 8 of 33
Meeting space is in high demand as we struggle to juggle the conflicting needs of: -Library Programs such as story time and educational seminars -Library Partnerships such as the Maternal Infant Services Network, Dutchess One Stop Job Search -Outside Groups such as Waterman Bird Club, Trout&Game Club, Girl Scouts -Study Groups such as tutors and early childhood educators page 9 of 33
Photo by William Brawley page 10 of 33
The purpose of the Americans With Disabilities Act is to ensure equity of access to everyone, and it is the number one category at which our library fails. page 11 of 33
In addition to the challenges shown, there are a number of programs we are not legally allowed to provide if we cannot guarantee access to all, such as AARP Safe Driving courses, free tax preparation, Brain Games for Seniors. Photo by Alin S Living with Autism page 12 of 33
Our current ramp is not sufficient, as the door cannot open on its own and the ramp is located on the side. There are no handicapped areas of the library. We would be able to use more volunteers and accept more donations if we could provide an elevator to assist. Photo by jessamyn page 13 of 33
There is not enough meeting space for the amount of activity and organizations that wish to use it. Thus our current policy limits groups to once per month, which is not sufficient for their needs. Photo by Mr.Tea page 14 of 33
New space will be: flexible accessible subdividable able to be accessed at night remotely Photo by Steigenberger Hotels and Resorts page 15 of 33
page 16 of 33
This is one of only 3 cramped areas a person can actually sit down in our library. There is no room for new acquisitions without discarding an older title. Shelf space is insufficient by at least 30%. page 17 of 33
Photo by adventurejournalist page 18 of 33
Photo by Alexandre Dulaunoy page 19 of 33
1972 was 44 years ago! The staff, trustees and friends have been good stewards of our library. A new roof was added 20 years ago and joists in the attic a decade ago. However, time is catching up with us. Our current needs are more serious that "sprucing up." page 20 of 33
We need to: Renovate Update Maintain historical center Become energy efficient page 21 of 33
Photo by Un ragazzo chiamato Bi page 22 of 33
The estimate for the cost of this project is under 2 million dollars. We hope to raise the majority of the needed funds from private donations, state grants, private grants and community fundraisers. Photo by hjl page 23 of 33
Costs would include: Buying land Building a new building that is state compliant. Lose the town center There would be one more old empty building on Main St. Estimates are 3 million. Photo by ARBRE ÉVOLUTION page 24 of 33
Why purchase another old building when we already have one for free that's grandfathered? "Grandfathering" is a term indicating that certain new building standards are not necessary in a building that keeps its original purpose and ownership. The other negatives from the previous option all apply here as well. Photo by Toronto Public Library Special Collections page 25 of 33
Tinkelman Architecture is local and respected. They're interested in keeping the historic nature of towns whenever possible. Their successful projects include the East Fishkill Library renovation, the Mill in Pleasant Valley, as well as Adams Fairacre Farms, the Juliet Theater complex, etc. page 26 of 33
This is a preliminary rendering of our proposed renovation and expansion of 1200 ft. It may not look EXACTLY like this, but we expect it to be similar. page 27 of 33
page 28 of 33
Current estimates are 1.5 Million, which is almost half of the other two options and leaves the town's historic center not just intact, but improved. page 29 of 33
This is a preliminary rendering of our renovated library. We expect minor variances as we appreciate stakeholder feedback, including neighbors, the planning board and residents. page 30 of 33
The planning board process includes communication and collaboration with our neighbors. Formal plans must be submitted and certified by state and local authorities, and must meet strict requirements. The fundraising begins after plans have been approved. We need community support in two ways: in fundraising and in spreading the word about this important project. Photo by stevendepolo page 31 of 33
What can you do? Spread the word about the project in your community and with town stakeholders. Help raise awareness and financial assistance. page 32 of 33
