10 By The Body Electric Race Report Computers. They have been around, in one form or another, for a very, very long time. They have the ability to make our lives easier and we have become very dependent on them. Why am I being all Captain Obvious here? Well, because there was a major issue with the computer at the April event (no fooling!), and all of the data had to be manually reconstructed and manually input. Meaning the results are, in purely technical terms, wonky. Thankfully, the course, the weather and the fun factor had no reliance on computers. This is your distant early warning that the afterimage of the event communicated below may not be 100% chronologically correct. So, join me in this digital recounting of an analog event. And, for those in the know handle with kid gloves. There were a few folks who did not have to worry about what the computer had to say regarding their results those who had no competition. It s no BS that Doug Prentiss ran alone in BS, while Kim DeBower was a one -man band in DS. Bob Palmblad had no one to race in HS, but proved he is still as fast as ever, by running a quicker time than 21 of the 22 others who ran in the Street classes and posting a Top 20 finish. David Hanington ran alone in SSR, finishing 7 th overall and Mickey Gauldin was the sole entrant in SSM, notching a Top 10 finish. The novice class was the largest class by a wide margin. And, for a change, there was some close competition, as evidenced by the fact that the top 4 were separated by less than half a second. Daniel Zamora finished 5 th with Matthew Pagan 4 th and Juney Thompson 3 rd. It took Jonathan Triyono three tries to stay on course, but once he found his way around he found his way into 2 nd place, with Raymond Pozzi taking the novice class win and a one -way ticket to opening classing. Erich Mertz was fast in AS, racing to victory by over 8/10 of a second ahead of Don Hosler, with Maury Hamill 3 rd. CS saw the return of some familiar (and long) names as Greg Shumaker finished 1 st, with the equally familiar Jason Hupenbecker finishing 2 nd and newly minted member Michael Tomich taking 3 rd. The E Street band was made up of 3 members this month (although only 2 of the 3 were MSCC members and I don t know any of their songs) and it was Kevin Bonitz stealing a close win over Scott Swartz. FS saw the timeless Bruce Abbott (who has been racing longer than MSCC has been in existence; in fact, when Bruce started racing they kept time on an abacus) take on Steve Marcum, with Steve as the victor. GS matched AS and CS as the largest street classes, but surpassed those classes in competitiveness as the top 4 were within less than a second of each other, and the margin of victory was less than a quarter of a second. Zane Plumley finished 3 rd as Ryan 10

11 Race Report McConville and Jason Phillips went toe-to-toe (we don t do wheel-to-wheel, thankfully) for the class win. Ryan set the early pace and Jason closed the gap, but in the end Ryan s lead held up and he claimed the win. On to the Street Touring classes, where in STF Ben Turner took on someone a quarter of his age and showed the young whipper snapper, Olivia Edstrom, old guys can drive pretty fast. We won t mention that Olivia got her license last week (or last year, but who cares about facts?). STX had very little drama as David Lineberry went fast early and Chris Biedal could not find the speed to catch him. STR, on the other hand, was packed with drama as Don Cross and Alex Montes traded the lead all day long. With 1 run remaining Alex had a slim lead of 0.218, but Don dropped over 4 tenths of a second on his final run to claim a well-earned win. STU has long been the domain of Ryan Speaks and the April event was another opportunity for this former Tiger Champion to claim dominion as Ryan won by almost 4 full seconds. In ASP John Giddens was wearing a wife beater, which for John is a racing helmet, and ran a typically scorching time 4 th fastest of the day - while in BSP Owen Brock had just enough speed to beat Justin Hall. And in CSP Bob Blucher bludgeoned Travis Turner by over 1.8 seconds (bludgeoned is too strong a word, but it sounded cool in my head) and blasted a top 3 overall finish. In SMST2 George Bonafede brought out his latest toy and proceeded to hit some cones with it I squirm just thinking about it - but once he cleaned up his act he knocked down the win over Kevin Spence, with Karel Schneider 3 rd and a Puck Cheaterson sighting. In SMST4 there was plenty of power and plenty of grip but not much angst as Harry Corbin scored the win by almost a full second. In SMF Salim Sanchez did not want to break up the Mendez family, so he kept them together, behind him, as he ran away with a 1.2 second win, with Luis Mendez 2 nd. Last, and least, in terms of time spent on course, was the SM class, where Tristan Sothern went fairly slow on his 1 st run (had his 1 st run time been his only official run he would have finished outside the top 20) and blisteringly fast on his 2 nd run to set the Top Time of Day. He failed to go any faster, but setting the TTD is, you know, the fastest all day, so there s that. I will finish where I started, which is to both hail and lament our reliance on computers. Why? Because this entire race report was not only created on a computer, but it was also based on the computed race results. Meaning? It is quite possible the results are not in the correct order, that Triston may have in fact set TTD on his final run, that the drama between Don Cross and Alex Montes so eloquently stated above did not unfold as the printed results would suggest. One thing computers cannot do is take us back in time..yet. 11
