22 Race Report BY Juney Thompson June The time of year in which summer is in full effect. It s also the time in which we ask what humanity did to anger the sun god(s) THIS year. If you ask me, I say it was Australia stopping the production of Holden vehicles. But that s a discussion for another time. Either way, prepare yourself for a hot, hot, hot Race Report!!! As stated above, the weather was hot, with a side of humid. Fortunately, a little breeze picked up later in the morning. It was welcomed. Some dark clouds threatened to get all up in our business, but they ended up keeping their distance. By the numbers, we had 82 entries back up to what we re used to! We ended up having 2 heats, with 6 runs each, and a lunch break in between! The course was a quick and tight. Lap times were down into the 29 second range for the quickest folks. The course layout featured a Chicago box, which made Brandon Delli Gatti very happy (he likes Chicago boxes I don t know why). It also featured a short straightaway, which made me very happy. That straight then kicked into a right-handed sweeper, with a couple of hard lefts to finish it off. Overall mechanical grip and precision driving were heavily rewarded, due to the tight gates and tight corners. 7 of the top 10 raw times were from AWD cars, which also speaks to the talent of the remaining 3 RWD contenders. Ryan Don t Call it a Comeback, I Been Here for Years Speaks returned to competition and returned to the top of the charts in raw time. Just to be clear, Ryan is 5-1 on TTD this year. And that 1 is only because he didn t show up. Rounding out the top 3 in raw time were Mickey Gauldin and Harry Corbin in Harry s 2005 STi. Both Mickey and Harry were on a bit of a comeback as well, and it s great to see them back at the top! Of note, last month s TTD winner, Olivia Hammac, was right there in 5 th. Notable in-class happenings: Ok let s break this down, because, well, it needs to be addressed. In 4 classes, the top 3 cars were within nearly a second of each other! In 3 of those classes, the top 3 were within 0.5 seconds of each other! In 2 of THOSE classes, the top 3 were within 0.25 seconds of each other! In 1 of THOSE classes, (STR) the top 3 were within are you ready for this?? seconds of each other!! What?! I mean WHAT?! By the way, Kevin Madyda was the madman that took the crown in that STR class, with his final run jumping him from 3 rd to 1 st, besting Bob Blucher by a mere seconds and Erik Mayer by seconds. Absolutely bananas! Other notable notes: Reigning Tiger Champ, George Bonafede, took the win in AS, over Don Hosler, by seconds. Bobby Horan took the win in Novice over Carlos Vidal by seconds. Welcome to regular classing Bobby! Smoke in the City BBQ provided the food. Their brisket sammich was scrumptious. Robert Soto and some other folks did some unplanned drifting. Robert s 84 Olds has developed quite a fan following. And now, the first repeat Race Report spotlight/fist-bump/firm handshake recipient Mr. Brandon Forster has only been with us a short time, but he quickly became a well-liked addition to our nifty little club. Brandon is moving to Texas, where he will stay until he gets tired of line dancing. The June event was Brandon s last one with us and he wore a fancy umbrella hat for the occasion. Godspeed, Brandon, and sorry again for misspelling your name last time. Now on to the July event at Lake Tech! Bring sunscreen and some form of sacrifice for the sun god(s).
