I developed Chord Stories leading nd th graders at a eeklong musi onerene: We irst met on Monday morning or minutes and e ere sheduled to play or opening orship on Tuesday morning! Monday morning, ater getting to kno eah other, experimenting ith ringing himes or the irst time, inding notes on the sta and ringing hords, ehoing rhythms and suh; e spent the last 10 minutes on a Chord Story The olloing morning e had a quik pre-servie run-through o-stage or most o the ringers, Monday as the irst time they had ever touhed a hime, and they ere onident perorming or the entire onerene Tuesday morning A key to Chord Stories is estalishing eah harater s musial signature hile assigning eah hime and eah ringer to only one harater, utilizing all availale himes in your range This oers a very lexile set-up or the largest possile numer o ringers in many dierent situations While originally reated or hildren s groups, Chord Stories an also e a un ativity or teens and adults (ringers and/or non-ringers) to oer a quik hildren s sermon, sripture reading enhanement, ampire program or talent sho presentation eel ree to adapt the haraters, instruments and assignments to suit your group Assignments or Chord Stories are oered in a hierarhy o haraters and hords, depending on the numer o ringers and the range o himes availale ingers ho ooperatively play a harater stand together hen rehearsing and perorming - not in keyoard order at all A e ringers an represent one or to main haraters ith ust a e notes, hile a larger numer o ringers might represent more haraters using more himes To to our ringers per harater is ideal so they an oordinate ith eah other See the Set-up Sheets or and otave options as ell as or suggestions or the order to add haraters and the order to add himes to eah harater (inger Part 1, then Part, et) o Note the Part Numer indiates the order ringers might e added, NOT the order they ring in Some parts (like aino in Noah s Ark) an inlude many extra ringers, even inluding himes used in other haraters See Set-Up sheets or diretions Basi Set-up Sheet templates are inluded hih depit eah harater s assigned himes and rhythm pattern A Snapshot o all parts is inluded or the diretor Charater patterns an e taught y rote, ut eah set-up sheet shos a rhythmi representation o the pattern to e played - as a reminder or oth diretor and ringers These setup sheets also allo himes to e pre-positioned in their orret harater groups eore rehearsal or perormane, so ringers an quikly (and aurately!) ind their himes The set-up sheets should e plaed on tales or loor in the same order eah time, so ringers an quikly learn here to ind their speii harater s himes, kno here to stand and easily return the himes hen inished You may reate extra set-up sheets i you ant to inlude extra instruments or a larger range o himes The diretor should understand ho eah harater orks so that rote teahing is quik and lear Voalizing a part and pointing to eah ringer in turn ill help them understand ho their harater orks ememer that himes ill not e in keyoard order or the most part, and the depitions o the parts in the set-up sheets don t exatly represent the intervals eing played they are a artoon o simple rhythms or the high/lo himes in hand When neessary or larity, set-up sheets do indiate let or right hand hime hen a single hime is used This is the story o Noah, a strong aith, a hallenge and an amazing ourney A long time ago, there ame a time hen God as very displeased ith people in general they had adopted iked ays and ere not olloing his ishes But there as one man ho asn t iked, and his name as Noah God alled to Noah one day and told him to uild a huge oat, alled an Ark, and to ill it ith to o every kind o animal Noah looked around at the desert and must have thought, There s no ater to loat the Ark in! - and - Ho in the orld ill I gather up all these animals and I don t even kno ho to uild an Ark! But Noah had a strong aith and anted to oey, so he said to God, I ill do as you ommand As the Ark egan to take shape, the tonspeople ame y to make un o Noah There s no ater or miles and miles around to loat this Ark in! the people taunted, Are you sure you heard God orretly You must e razy to think you an onvine any animals to get into this Ark! And then, laughing, the people ent aay and ontinued their iked ays At last the Ark as inished, and, to-y-to, the animals rom all over ame to e loaded in Noah also alled his amily to ome on oard the Ark, ut not the tonspeople The huge door on the Ark as losed, and it egan to rain The tonspeople proaly got tired o laughing and ent home It rained more, pouring don, or 10 days until the land as looded The animals and Noah and his amily, saely in the Ark, loated on the ater or a long time, until they landed on a mountain top Noah let all the animals o the Ark, and God promised to never do this again to the people and shoed this y throing a aino aross the sky or example: The to ringers or Tonspeople in Noah s Ark play a ell-knon taunting rhythm oten assoiated ith the ords Nanny, nanny, oo-oo! inger #1 has B and C#, playing them oth tie or the irst Nan-ny and playing only the H hime (C#) or the irst Boo inger # plays LH (A#) hime on the seond Nan- and H hime (D#) on -ny (an easy rhythm hen you play oth notes involved) and then the LH hime on the last -oo Together the to ringers reate a omplete harater statement as The Tonspeople Suggestions or Assigning, Teahing and Perorming Noah s Ark Deiding on assignments and set-up Noah is represented y hords played quarter, quarter, hal-note The G s and C s play every note in the pattern The s play only the quarter notes, and the E s play the hal note So the E and are est given to one person ho plays E-E- (hih is easier than ust playing the ) The G s and C s an e given to any numer o ringers, ho play on every note (The ot version is shon at right) God is represented y a D maor hord played three times: hal-note, hal-note, hole-note-hold-it All ringers ring the same rhythm pattern ith all himes (- ot version shon elo) Adding more ringers to the group allos more notes to e added to either Noah or God - or to expand the harater list y adding Ark hih uses thum-damped himes playing let-right-letright-let-right-let Adding yet more ringers allos any or all existing haraters to have more notes added and/or to add still more haraters ( Tonspeople, Animals, ain ) until an entire -otave hime or ell set is ully utilized Ideally, three or our ringers per part is maximum to help them oordinate their part together as a small group All o these patterns an easily e taught y rote ut the Set-Up sheets help remind ringers their patterns, too Note that time signatures are not needed in the set-up sheets note values alone allo these patterns to e demonstrated and mimiked It s not alays neessary, ut, as a rememering aid, a mnemoni an e devised or any pattern (suh as God is great! ) These are the to main haraters, so i you have our ringers their assignments ould e: inger #1 (Noah - part 1) - E and inger # (Noah - part ) - C and G inger # (God - part 1) - D and # inger # (God - part ) - A and A To aommodate even more ringers, some parts an e shared y ringers (espeially simple hords) Note that some harater parts are areully assigned to make rhythm parts easy or novie ringers to play and rememer Tonspeople is a good example So splitting up suh parts to inlude more ringers may make these parts more diiult to play Whatever your needs, eel ree to rerite rhythms and assignments (making ne Set-Up Sheets), to reate additional harater parts, to add perussion instruments or more sets o himes/ells - all to allo your ringers to e involved, onident and suessul Puppets or ators ould also e employed to roaden the sope o the presentation and involve more people rom Introdution to Perormane Preparation: Noting varying skills in your group o ringers, assign eah harater aording to aility Have set-up sheets and orresponding himes in plae or the numer o ringers you antiipate (as in photo at right) Note that one ringers pik up their himes, they ill e ale to see their rhythm pattern on the sheet Note also that Part is empty hih is okay See more assignment examples at the ottom o the page irst ehearsal: Teah all ringers proper ringing stroke and damp Then, one harater at a time, assign a e ringers to a speii harater s himes and immediately explain, diret and let them pratie their part a e times Make sure himes are piked up in proper order let hand and right hand as plaed on the set-up sheets (A stronger leader in eah group an e very helpul ut isn t neessary As eah harater group praties their part, they learn to respond to eah other and play together) Then move to the next group o ringers, demonstrate their harater s pattern and have them pratie One all parts are assigned and pratied; I suggest you have one more go-around ith eah group playing their harater one or tie as you say the harater name: say Noah, and diret the Noah group to play hen you pause This allos you to reinore their pattern and also helps them to understand the timing o their response No it s time to read through the story the irst time Emphasize a harater s name (underlined in the sript) and emphatially pause at irst, hih ues the speii harater s group to play There ill e mistakes and laughter You ill orget to pause, they ill orget to ring Then pratie ithout giving them ovious visual ues, sine they ill e aing the audiene (not you) or their perormane With ust to or three run-throughs at this one rehearsal and a quik arm-up pre-perormane, they ill e ready to enthrall their audiene Perormane: Set-up Sheets are laid out in order ith himes on them ingers ind their himes and stand in order ith their harater groups, all aing the same diretion they ill ae the audiene Staging orks ell ith ringers in a line, harater groups standing together, ith narrator in the middle; though the arrangement an e very lexile Determine hih end o the line ill lead onto stage, so this set-up and order is preserved hen aing the audiene A quik hek o haraters o-stage (say it, play it) ill remind them o rhythm patterns and orret any misplaed order or himes Everyone iles out on stage and perorms Have un! In this example ringers ill play God, and other ringers ill play Noah Noah, Part 1, ill hold the E in let hand and in right hand, piking them up exatly as they are plaed on the set-up sheet In this example, more ringers have een added to oth parts, so they are ully staed no: ringers or Noah and ringers or God Note that ringers, one in eah harater, have only one hime Some parts may e split or to ringers to share to allo more people to partiipate, ut make sure the parts don t eome more diiult ion the proess HandellWorldom ax Order Anytime to ollo Us on Titter!

So I thought I ould make some soup And ith that he pulled the stone rom his poket, turned it three times in his hand, and dropped it into the iron pot This kind o stone generally makes a ine soup, ut tonight it ill e rather thin, as I ve een using it or many eeks I I only had a handul o arley and perhaps some rie, it ould e so muh etter The villager (#1) said, I might have a little it put aside and, gathering some rom tins he had hidden, dropped the grains into the soup With a little smile, the traveler sloly stirred the iron pot, linking the stone ith a spoon Another villager (#1 and #) ame out to see hat as happening and as told aout soup made rom a stone Ah, yes, this is a onderul soup, said the traveler, and i I only had a it o meat and some potatoes, it ould e good enough or ompany! The seond villager said, I may have a little o eah put aay or a rainy day She ent to get them rom her larder and tossed the meat and potatoes into the iron pot The traveler smiled and ontinued to stir the soup, linking the stone in the iron pot, hile more villagers (#1, # and #) looked on in onder By no all the villagers had ome out o hiding to see hat as happening A it o aage and a e arrots ould make this soup good enough or the est in the land, said the traveler And some tomatoes and eans ould make it ine enough or royalty!
