With Easter on its way I thought this might be a good recipe. I haven t had this in years, but it s fun and decorative for Easter. EASTER BREAD Color 5 uncooked eggs. Butter a 15 1/2 x 12 inch baking sheet. 2 pkg. active dry yeast 1 ½ cups flour ½ cup warm water Soften dry yeast in warm water for 5 to 10 minutes. In a large bowl, blend flour into ½ cup warm water. Stir yeast and add to flour-water mixture. Mix well, and then beat until very smooth. Cover bowl with wax paper and towel and let stand 1 ½ to 2 hours. ¾ cup shortening 1 tablespoon grated lemon peel 2 tablespoons lemon juice measure 4 ½ to 4 ¾ cups flour and set aside Cream shortening until it is softened, add yeast mixture. Add half of the flour to the yeast mixture and beat until smooth. Mix in enough of the remaining flour to make a soft dough. Knead on a lightly floured surface. Shape dough into a smooth ball and place into a greased bowl. Cover with waxed paper and towel and let rise until doubled in size, about 1 ½ to 2 hours. Punch dough down with fist. Divide into 2 equal balls and let stand for about 10 minutes. Roll each ball into a long roll, about 36 inches long and 1 to 1 ½ inches thick. Take the 2 long pieces and form a loosely braided ring, leaving spaces for the eggs. Place the eggs into the spaces, cover loosely with towel and let rise until doubled in size. Bake in a 350 degree oven for 10 minutes, remove from oven and brush with mixture of 1 egg yolk and 1 tablespoon milk. Sprinkle with multi-colored candies and return to oven to bake for 40 to 45 minutes or until golden brown. MSRA Schedule of Events 50
