1 Connecticut Manuscript Postmarks Project In the early 1980s collector-friend Ray F. Longobardi suggested that the Connecticut Postal History Society publish a reference work on manuscript postmarks of the state. Close collaboration with Vin Vaicekauskas and Arthur J. Warmsley resulted in the first edition of Connecticut Manuscript Postmarks, 1788 Thru 1899, being published in The second edition was greatly expanded and much improved by Ralph A. Edson in I did the page layout and served as editor for the second effort. Both Ray and Ralph expressed the hope that in the future philatelists would continue the work which they had begun. With their encouraging words I have prepared this updated web version table of the study. Dozens of changes have been included. The intention is to continue to update the study on this site as new information becomes available. ~ W. J. Duffney January 2019 ( Contributors ) John Amberman Robert Anderson Phil Bansner Edward B. 18 ( Apparent Anomalies ) Bethlem/Bethlehem (L) This town was first incorporated as Bethlem and the post office was established on July 29, 1811, with Joseph Brooks appointed first postmaster. The name was changed to Bethlehem by It is unclear whether this change was ever made official. Centre/Center; Burgh/Burg; Borough/Boro A spate of spelling changes occurred throughout the country in the 1890s. In accordance with the new Board of Geographical Names attempt to standardize spelling, the POD ordered that the spelling Center replace Centre on December 12, The POD directed that the h of burgh and the ugh of borough be eliminated, effective December 1, Additionally, the use of possessives was ended at that time. Chapinville/Chapin Ville (L) The Chapinville post office operated from May 31, 1828 to August 26, After having been closed for about three years, it was reopened as Chapin Ville on July 3, The second period of operation lasted until October 30, This simple spelling change continued in effect during the third period of operation from January 19, 1872 to January 21, Glastenbury/Glastonbury (H) The post office was first established as Glastenbury on July 1, 1806, with Joseph Wells postmaster. The spelling was changed to Glastonbury on November 23, It is probable that this change simultaneously affected East Glastenbury, which was established on September 6, 1861, and whose name is also known with the spelling East Glastonbury. Killingworth (W), et al There were two offices serving the area: Killingworth, established on April 10, 1794, and North Killingworth, established on November 20, The North Killingworth office was discontinued on August 24, The next day both post offices merged and reopened as the Killingworth Post Office. Because of the change, two different periods of operation of the Killingworth Post Office have been ascribed - Killingworth (1) and Killingworth (2). Another office, North Killingsworth, with an s, was opened on February 15,1859 to again serve the north side. It was discontinued on January 16, Marble Dale/Marbledale (L), et al On December 1, 1895, many office names of more than one word were combined throughout the country. Mashapaug/Mashapang (T) The Mashapaug Post Office appears in some official records as Mashapang. This is undoubtably a clerical error made in Washington, D.C. The actual manuscript postmark examples suggest that the u could easily have been misinterpreted by a clerk or typist as being the letter n when reading handwritten reports. (See page 51) Meriden/West Meriden (NH) On August 24, 1880 the original Meriden Post Office was discontinued. However, the West Meriden Post Office was renamed the Meriden Post Office. There are, therefore, two separate periods of operation for Meriden. This study has found manuscript examples from the first period of operation only, and none from West Meriden. Stafford/Stafford Spa/Stafford Springs (T) Even local historians are not certain of the details of this situation. Manuscript postmarks for both Stafford Springs and Stafford Spa are known to exist. It might be that both versions were accepted at the Stafford Springs Post Office because 'springs' are sometimes referred to as 'spas' by various local populations. Another possibility is that official records might be incomplete or erroneous. Further study of this state of affairs is required to come to a definitive understanding.
