Beyond the Boards NEWSLETTER November 2014 Volume I, Issue 2 Letter From the President, Anthony Giusto (Juice) CCYHA Families & Friends, It s only the beginning of November and already it s proving to be an exciting and successful Season! A big congratulations to our Squirt A team which won the New England Regional Silver Stick Championship last weekend. You can read more details on their win on page 2. INSIDE THIS ISSUE PAGE 2-4 Team Updates 4 Jingle Bell Info 5 Mini 1-on Who is Central? 9-10 Sponsorship & Fundraising 11 Holiday Gift Apparel Volunteer Coaches & Staff 15 Day in the Life of Squirt Director 16 Pond Hockey Turkey Shootout Also, a big congratulations to Squirts Finn McHugh and Jacob Markowitz who competed in the TD Bank Mini 1-on1 competition in Boston earlier this month. You can read about their incredible run on page 5. They did an amazing job representing CCYHA and the State of CT! Speaking of accomplishments, our Dinner Dance was one of the best ever! Thank you to Dan McClutchy, our VP of Fundraising and his wife Amy for their tireless efforts with organizing this event. Also, thank you to Michelle Bonner, our PR Director and Newsletter Editor for soliciting a number of the silent auction items and for helping Dan and Amy make this a tremendous success! Last month our House League, Advanced Mites and Learn-to-Play programs got underway. These young players are the future of Central CT Youth Hockey and Mike Deegan (LTS Director) and Bob Patz (House Director) have done a great job putting the programs and teams together. I appreciate you taking the time to read the Newsletter. We have a lot of information in this edition, including team updates and some great Holiday gift ideas! If you only read one thing in here, be sure to make it A Day in the Life of a Squirt Director. Doug Partridge, sans his dance moves, provides an entertaining outline like only he can. I look forward to what December has to offer for our teams and players. In the meantime, on behalf of the entire organization, I hope you and your family have a Happy Thanksgiving. ~ Juice

TEAM UPDATES SQUIRT B MITE A The Squirt B team is off to a fast start, posting a record. Outscoring our opponents by a 4-1 margin, we are receiving contributions on offense from all 3 lines, steady defensive play and solid goaltending by Dylan Steve Brown. As the holidays approach, the team looks forward to the Thanksgiving tournament in Watertown where we will play in the A division, looking to compete at the highest level possible. The team has been working very hard in practice, concentrating on the fundamentals of hockey and they are seeing that hard work pay off in games. Since the start of the season the Mite As have been playing cross-ice games. The kids are working hard waiting for their chance to play full ice games which begin at the end of the year. The full ice schedule consists of 8 games and ends with the State Tournament starting Feb 12th. SQUIRT A CONGRATULATIONS to the Squirt A team which won the New England Regional Silver Stick Championship earlier this month. After going undefeated in the opening round, CCYHA beat the New Jersey Bandits in the semifinals to advance to the finals where they met the Wonderland Wizards. The Squirt As came away with a 4-0 victory in the championship game and advance to the International Silver Stick Tournament in Sarnia, Ontario in January. The Squirt A's finished the tournament with a perfect 5-0 record and outscored their opponents by Congratulations to all of you! 2

Team updates continued PEE WEE As we approach the holiday season all pee wee teams continue to practice hard and improve each week. Team records as of November 7, 2014: BANTAM A Bantam A has had a productive season thus far. Players from several outside organizations have joined a core group of returning Central players. The kids have formed good relationships and have really come together well considering their limited off- ice time together. The team has had the opportunity to play against very strong competition with respectable results in both the Challenge Cup and Silver Stick tournaments. We have sought out higher- paced competition early in the season to help prepare the team for the upcoming CHC season, which starts November 8 th. With the blend of skill and athleticism on the team, the Coaches expect this group will perform very well against its CHC competition. Pee Wee A: , PWA competed in the International Silver Sticks Tournament over the Halloween weekend going 1-2. Pee Wee A1: Pee Wee B: BANTAM B The Bantam B team is off to a great start this season with a record. The coaches have been working on passing, checking and positional play with the team. The players' effort in both practices and games has been very good. In 10 games, the Bantam B team has scored 36 goals while allowing 20 against the opposition. Every player has been contributing with great effort and teamwork and the coaches are having a very difficult time in awarding the weekly 'Hustle Award" to the most deserving player. 3

Team updates continued SQUIRT C The Squirt C team is having an AWESOME start to the season with a record. The kids have really bonded and their sense of team is obvious in both the locker room and on the ice. They are really looking forward to their Wolfpack game on Friday, BANTAM A1 It s been a tough start to this season for the Bantam A1 team which is , 2-2 in league play. The team has played a tough Tier 3 schedule already with most games coming against A teams. The record does not reflect the strides this team is making and the incredible effort by the players. The season is still very young and we look forward to turning thins around and coming together to make a push for a berth in the States. SQUIRT A1 What a start to the season for the Squirt A1 team. The kids have demonstrated great team work and have battled their way into First Place in the Tier III CHC National Division. The A1s have rounded out their schedule by playing EHF Teams from MA and NY. These games have been an excellent challenge for all the players. The team would like to congratulate our goalie, Jacob Markowitz and Squirt A, Finn McHugh, for representing CT & CCYHA in the Squirt Mini One on One Competition at the Boston Garden earlier this month. Although they lost in Triple OT in the First Round, they fought valiantly. Jacob continues to make amazing saves for our A1 team each weekend! Next up for Squirt A1 is the Silver Stick Tournament in Bridgeport Thanksgiving weekend. EMBASSY SUITES HOTEL ROOM BLOCKS CCYHA has blocked off rooms at the Embassy Suites Hotel for the Jingle Bell Skate Tournament In Marlborough, MA for 12/29 through 1/1. All CCYHA travel teams will be attending the Jingle Bell Tournament (with the exception of those teams attending the North American Winter Championships in Marlborough from 12/26-12/29). As this tournament runs through the holiday season, CCYHA recognizes the importance of keeping families together, so we cover the cost of the Jingle Bell tournament for all travel teams to ensure that teams don't participate in other tournaments. 4

CONGRATULATIONS! Congratulations to Squirts Finn McHugh and Jacob Markowitz who competed in the TD Bank Mini 1-on-1 competition earlier this month. The boys represented Connecticut after winning the State s Mini 1-on-1 competition this past spring. Finn & Jacob putting on a brilliant showing against a tough Seacoast team, but ultimately lost in triple overtime in the first round. Mini 1-on-1 teams consist of one goalie and one shooter representing a New England youth hockey organization at the Squirt, Pee Wee, Girls 10&U and Girls 12&U levels. Finn & Jacob s competition will be featured on NESN during a Bruins telecast and in-arena during Bruins game intermissions. We ll keep you posted on when the air-date will be! Congratulations once again on a huge accomplishment! CONGRATULATIONS! This weekend our CCYHA Selects Hockey Academy Tier 1 Midget Minor and Midget Major teams competed in the Midget Tier 1 New England Regionals. The Midget Minors went on to capture the New England Regional Championship and advance to the USA Hockey National Championships in the spring. Our Midget Minors won a grueling 4 overtime semifinal game and then defeated the CT Jr. Wolfpack in the finals. The Midget Majors also reached the final game, but were defeated by the CT Jr. Wolfpack. The Majors could still get an at large bid to nationals if they are ranked high enough in the national rankings. 5

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A SQUIRT DIRECTOR sans the dance moves Authored by Doug Partridge Saturday, October 4, It s an early wakeup after pouring over scouting and injury reports late Friday night; but with all 6 Squirt teams in action, today is no day to sleep in With a pitcher of Kool Aid and half a dozen cigars I say good byes to the family and sequester myself into the Squirt war room and await the reports Squirt Cs face an early road test against Avon. The first game of the day often sets the tone and Coach Rodriguez delivers with a 3-0 victory. Hand over that White Copy Scoresheet and thanks for playing Avon No time to celebrate as Coach Patz and Coach Odell prepare the B1s for the Arctic climate of Choate Arena. Holding a 2-1 lead late in the game the Hawks get the equalizer when 8 of the Capitals lose feeling in their fingers due to frostbite and the Cap B1s must settle for a tie against Wallingford Coach Prestash has his hands full as a rogue barnstorming Westchester Express team invades Newington. With the Caps up one late, the Express and the referees decide that offsides is not a rule to be taken literally and with that in mind are able to tie the game up There once was a coach from Hamden who opined last year in Newington that Hamden Hockey is back! Well not today, and not on Coach Usegglio s watch, as the A1s slayed the Dragons Coach Nower and his young squad travel to the unfriendly confines of Bolton Arena to face an ECHO B team. Holding a tenuous lead late can Pete keep the team focused, or are they already thinking about their Munson Chocolate order? And at 1235 it s final: the C1s have secured their first victory of the season! 1325 Coach Lachance leads his gang across the border to Smithfield RI to play the Providence Capitals. With a 3-1 victory secured the Squirt A coaching staff demands that Providence stop using the Capitals nickname. Final Results on the Day - CCYHA Squirts Undefeated: 4-0-2, 20GF, 7GA, 19:30 PIM, 1 water bottle thrown 15
