3 Almost thirty years ago, one of my sons asked me if I thought that I would soon be considering buying a King of the Hill ZR-1. At that time, the family was still making do with the one 1967 that we had had for about eight years. Let's see how they hold up and watch to see how far they depreciate so that I can someday be closer to affording one." What I did not say was that there were five kids to see through college, plus all sorts of other expenses to handle first. Four years later, I bought a low mileage C4 for a little less than twenty per cent of what that ZR-1 would have cost me. Ultimately, I would drive that red car another 120,000 miles, largely trouble free. I still have it, in a semi-retired status and never really entertained a ZR-1. Another son never did lose the desire for his own ZR-1, but so far, his own kids, their college, and all sorts of things have kept him from realizing that dream. Around the debut of the 1997 C5s, the discussion happened again about when I might be buying one for myself. The volume increased once the new Z-06 version came to market. Not quite ready for that, I did go out and buy a lightly used 40th Anniversary edition, making a second C4 in the driveway with the 1967 still in the garage. My oldest son found a 1990 convertible and bought it. It was cheap and would turn out to be abused, making it the worst we had ever owned. He sold it and several months later, it burned to the ground on an interstate highway. Probably before all its issues were discovered. With that unfortunate car, my oldest son lost his enthusiasm for buying another. When the C6 models were introduced in 2005, my boys started in with the "when" questions again. With only one left to see through college, the possibilities were better. I did wait for two years, then I bought a new 2007 and let the youngest drive it home from the dealer. He'll get it in my will and knows it. He's doing well with life successes and takes good care of his Audis. The others also know which of the family s they'll likely get when I can no longer drive them. The oldest will get the oldest car and the C4s will be doled out in birth order. My daughter with four kids will not get her own but for practicality will get a beautiful Range Rover Holland and Holland edition. At present, they still have messmaking little kids, so I hope to wait a bit before she gets in touch with premium English leather and wool. So far, the three Packards are going unclaimed, as is Mom's Corvair and the BMW coupe. One of the grandsons wants my C1500 pickup, but his father says it's too fast for a young driver. There is also a newish VW and an Audi sedan to account for, but I will save them for my own old age. With the advent of the new 2015 C7s, the questions began again. No plans, I said. Now it's the Mid-Engine rumors that have the questions floating again. I wonder if I could just stop them by looking for a nicely kept 1992 ZR-1 that I could finally afford? After all, every family can use three C4s. CA REVIEW AUGUST 3

4 NCM Museum Trip Over the weekend of June 29 - July 1, 2018, thirteen members of Atlanta went to the National Museum to do volunteer tasks the Museum needed to have done. We left Atlanta mid-morning on Friday and drove to Chattanooga to have lunch and visit the Coker Tire Museum. Traffic thru and out of Atlanta was its usual horrible mess but we all survived and arrived in Chattanooga about on schedule. We parked in the Coker Museum lot and walked a couple of blocks to the Southern Star restaurant for lunch that was fairly quick considering how busy they were. The food was good and we all made it back to the Museum for the scheduled tour. No, the Coker Tire Museum isn t full of tires on display but there are some wheels and tires on a wall and all the old cars and motorcycles had tires on them. The museum has quite a large group of vehicles from the turn of the 20 th century up to the early seventies plus numerous old motors and other unusual car parts on display. Some of their cars are restored originals, some are duplicates they have made and all are in running condition and taken out by Corky Coker on drives and to car shows. Coker Tire purchased the rights to the Honest Charlie name and an Honest Charlie store is on their site with a full catalog for ordering items by internet. Both the Museum and store were interesting and we learned a good bit from the tour guide who has been on site for many years. We drove to the NCM that afternoon with both good and not so good road conditions worsened by missed turns by the navigator (me) and settled in at the La Quinta hotel where all of us stayed. Over the last several trips by our club to Bowling Green we have eaten one evening at a Rafferty s restaurant and we did so again on this trip with all of us at one long table. The food and service was once again very good with a young college lady as our waitress who put up quite well with our kidding and questions. CA REVIEW AUGUST 4

5 Saturday morning we had breakfast at the hotel and proceeded as a group to the NCM where we met our contact Stephanie Morrill and her daughter. After receiving our NCM passes, we were given alternatives of things we could do. We broke up into small groups and worked in the store, washed windows, took pictures of outside banners, put together new member packages, placed wrist bands in small groups for issuing to Museum visitors, sorted and labeled banners that had been displayed outside last year and corrected some of the Museum s brochures that had been misprinted. Our tasks each year varies and this year was no exception. We also learned the hard way that reading the directions for some of the tasks we performed before starting would have helped to get it done correctly and prevents re-doing. Following lunch in the Museum cafeteria, we toured the Museum looking at both previous displays as well as quite a few new items. The NCM was quite busy this day with lots of spectators around all day. We were able to see a new ZR1 in the delivery area in bright Orange with the full aero package and heard the Museum staff crank it up for the crowd. The group then went to the Motor Sports Park where some chose to drive the Karts on the Kart track while others went on the roof of the control tower to watch motorcycle racing on the racetrack. Dinner Saturday night was at a Smokey Bones where we had to break up into smaller groups due to the restaurant being quite busy. Many of us were well worn out this evening so early turn-ins were common. On Sunday, many individuals had things they wanted/needed to do and time constraints, so we came back to Atlanta in smaller groups. We were quite fortunate that the rain held off the first two days though some rain occurred on the trip back to Georgia. The temperature and humidity however were quite high so outdoor activities were limited as were top down convertible drives. Give some consideration to attending one of these outings to the NCM. Ask any of the attendees; Judy and David Adcock, Ann and Ed Clark, Donna and Michael Greer, Rob McLean, Frank Merrifield, Carolyn and Dan Nugent, Sarah and Bob Rio and/or Bob Zrolka about their experiences. The event planner/organizer/chief group herder/museum Ambassador learns new things each trip and keeps trying to make them better. Suggestions are always welcomed. CA REVIEW AUGUST 5

17 COKER TIRE MUSEUM On Friday, June 29, 2018 our Atlanta contingent of 13 members bound for NCM in Bowling Green made a visit to the Coker Tire Museum in Chattanooga, TN. Trip leader Ed Clark had made reservations for a tour at 1 PM and most of us did not know what to expect of a tire museum. Coker Tire Company was founded 60 years ago by Harold Coker who became a world-renown source for providing specialty tires and wheels for antique and collector cars, trucks, and motorcycles. He was able to acquire the original molds of discontinued classic tires and has produced a large variety of tires (and wheels) to serve the collector market that demands originality. The original location has expanded into multiple old buildings that house production, warehousing, and collector vehicles. Over the years, Mr. Coker and his son Corky have been collecting dozens of vehicles of interest to them and of historic significance. Each has a story that was related to us by our guide Don Peddley who has been a close friend of the family for decades. He was very informative and entertaining as we toured the multiple buildings containing product displays, workshops, and vehicle displays. The last building was called STUFF and was large enough to host special events and/or displays of vintage motorcycles, rare race cars, unusual old touring buses, and a few muscle cars. However, there were no s although Coker makes tires and wheels for classic s that are being restored or judged for originality. Also included in the Coker complex is the famous Honest Charley Speed Shop that sells performance parts for old hot rods that was acquired by Coker. The annual Great Race across America has been sponsored by Coker who has entered some of their own cars with Corky Coker driving this time-speed-endurance rally for vintage cars, 1972 & older. Although the museum was expected to be a man s world the five CA ladies also found it to be very interesting and we all appreciated the opportunity and privilege of visiting this very memorable semi-private museum that does not charge admission and is eager to share its story with all car enthusiasts. 19 THE COKER TIRE MUSEUM How many of you have been to a TIRE museum, of all things? When Ed Clark announced that the Coker Tire Museum in Chattanooga would be our stop on the way to Bowling Green, I could hardly contain my excitement. Yea, right! The last time we went with the club to Bowling Green (in 2015), no other wives went along, but this time there were five of us so I figured that surely in downtown Chattanooga, there would be some place near the tire museum where we could shop. After a few potty stops along the way, we finally arrived at the museum early enough to have lunch first at a place nearby called the Southern Star. It was excellent and I think all of us would recommend it, with food freshly prepared each day. The only thing is, after lunch, we have to go to the TIRE museum. Why didn t I bring along a book or a newspaper? How long will this take? Can the ladies just sit in the lobby and visit? Talk about a very pleasant surprise!! You know, TIRES are attached to cars, some of them quite vintage, interesting, and beautiful. If you need tires for your antique auto, Coker probably has the mold and can make them for you. There were cars from my childhood, mostly restored, and some from long before that. Race cars, a rat rod, all sorts of cars. The tour was guided, so along the way we could ask questions of our guide. By the way, the tour is free, just check with Ed Clark about how to make a reservation. So, Ed, I apologize for being the doubter; I was just planning to go along with the group because I like to be with the people, but as it turned out, I really enjoyed the TIRE museum. Thank you for planning it for us. Oh, I almost forgot. Be sure to ask Carolyn Nugent if Dan has done any window washing at home lately. CA REVIEW AUGUST 19

31 CORVETTE RACING IN CANADA: Double Podium Finish in GTLM for C7.Rs Garcia, Magnussen finish second with Gavin, Milner third in class. DETROIT (July 8, 2018) Racing s pair of Chevrolet s both finished on the class podium Sunday at the Mobil 1 SportsCar Grand Prix at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park. It marked the team s first double podium of the season and allowed both C7.Rs to gain positions in the GT Le Mans (GTLM) points standings of the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship. Antonio Garcia and Jan Magnussen placed second in the No. 3 Mobil 1/SiriusXM Chevrolet C7.R, just ahead of Oliver Gavin and Tommy Milner in the No. 4 Mobil 1/SiriusXM. The results vaulted Garcia and Magnussen to second place in the GTLM Driver s Championship while Gavin and Milner are now tied for fourth. Chevrolet also moved up a spot in the Manufacturer standings to second after six rounds. The race featured six caution periods that allowed for a variety of pit stop strategies. In the end, the No. 3 finished a spot higher than where it started, and the No. 4 C7.R improved two positions. Magnussen qualified third but took second on the start from Ryan Briscoe and Gavin held position in fifth. Both s stopped 21 minutes in during the first yellow flag period for fuel and tires. Garcia and Milner took over an hour later, with the s running first and third just before the GTLM contenders began to make their last stops. Garcia came in with 55 minutes left to follow the No. 911 Porsche, which had been running second. Meanwhile, the No. 4 Racing team elected to keep Milner on track for another 20 minutes. After a string of impressive laps where he was on pace of the cars that had fresher Michelin tires, Milner came in from the lead with 35 minutes with only one other GTLM car electing to stay out. Unfortunately for the s, their lead challenger made its last stop just as the fifth caution period came out which kept the C7.Rs third and fourth when the race resumed with 20 minutes left. The top five cars were nose-to-tail as Garcia and Milner moved up to second and third, respectively, but the final caution period with 13 minutes remaining stymied any chances for either car to challenge for the win. 32 CORVETTE RACING AT LIME ROCK Third Straight Runner-Up for Garcia, Magnussen No. 3 team closes in on GTLM points leaders; Gavin, Milner gain with fourth place LAKEVILLE, Connecticut (July 21, 2018) Racing s Antonio Garcia and Jan Magnussen scored their third straight runner-up finish in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship on Saturday with a second-place overall finish at the Northeast Grand Prix. Garcia and Magnussen combined to lead 138 of the race s 178 laps in the No. 3 Mobil 1/SiriusXM Chevrolet C7.R around Lime Rock Park, where Garcia qualified on pole position. Saturday s result moved the No. 3 duo to within one point of the GT Le Mans (GTLM) Driver s Championship leaders. Oliver Gavin and Tommy Milner placed fourth Saturday in the No. 4 Mobil 1/SiriusXM Chevrolet C7.R the same position in which Milner began the race. Garcia led the entirety of his hour-long stint before he came into the pits for a driver change to Magnussen. The Dane drove a double-stint to the end and only lost the lead on the final pit stop cycle and an unfortunate off-track excursion with 10 minutes to go. Magnussen passed a slower GT car coming into Lime Rock s final, diving turn and slid wide on the exit of the corner. It took tremendous control for him to gather up the and rejoin without any damage. Milner made an early jump into third place at the race start in the No. 4 and held that position until his first stop with 63 minutes running. Gavin took over and rejoined in fifth place with the goal of moving back up into podium position during the final two hours. His perseverance paid off as he went from seventh after his final pit stop with 62 minutes left to fourth by the end of the race. CA REVIEW AUGUST 32

36 About once a year I go over the raffles the Museum uses to raise money for their operations. This review covers the period from June 8, 2017 to June 7, 2018 during which 25 cars were offered and 25 new owners of a were announced. This period of time was unusual in that three model years all were raffled in one calendar year; 2017 (7 s), 2018 (10 s) and 2019 (8 s). The construction ongoing at the assembly plant resulting in a short period of manufacturing of 2018 models and an early start for the 2019 s caused this to occur. During the time period three cars were raffled with unlimited number of tickets sold with one of the winners having ticket number 20,633. All the others were offered with limited numbers of tickets sold, either 1,000 or 1,500. In the limited number of ticket cases, all the tickets were sold each time. A reasonable mix of cars were included in the raffles including 15 Stingrays, 5 Grand Sports and 4 ZO6 s. A mix of colors was also offered including 4 cars each in Black, Arctic White, Watkins Glen Gray, Long Beach Red and Admiral Blue. Torch Red was on 3 cars and Blade Silver on 2. Coupes were the majority in body style with 20 and convertibles with 5. Apparently there are some Museum supporters that regularly buy raffle tickets and at least one has won more than one car. You might consider buying a ticket for yourself or one for a gift to a family member or friend.
