NEWSLETTER OF RENO REGION, SPORTS CAR CLUB OF AMERICA JUNE/JULY 2010 As Starter Dave Jansen waves the green flag, Chuck Johnson leads Art Majors and the rest of the Track Trials field at Reno-Fernley Raceway on June 5 th. Reno Region is On the Road (Course) Again! Large Field, Great Weather For First 2010 Track Day Surprisingly, Reno Region got its 2010 Track Events program off to a great start on June 5 th at Reno-Fernley Raceway. What s surprising about that? Well, in the middle of last winter, there weren t many people who expected Reno Region would even have a Track program this year. Reno- Fernley Raceway was closed and padlocked, there was a for-sale sign on the highway, and it looked like it would be several years or maybe never before the track opened again. But, the track s owners decided not to let it sit idle. They designated new managers, and by mid-spring modest improvements were underway. That was the signal for Reno Region to negotiate a new rental agreement and Continued on Page 8 NEW MEMBERS - WELCOME TO RENO REGION! I was watching Speed Channel s coverage of practice at the NASCAR race at Infineon, and they were showing Robby Gordon s footwork. Right foot always on the throttle, left foot always on the brake the clutch pedal wasn t even in the picture! Today s stock car transmissions, with their massive, square-cut gears and no synchros, are so robust that you can simply slam them through the gears, with just the slightest throttle lift on downshifts. Clutches are only used for getting out of the pits and doodling around the paddock. The Fine Art is an endangered species in other major racing series, too. Automated manual transmissions, where a computer relays the driver s gear choice to a bunch of electric or hydraulic actuators that actually accomplish the gear change (faster and more reliably than the driver can), are de riguer in F1, Indycar, even pro sports car racing. During Speed Channel s broadcast, Kyle Petty commented, Young drivers have a real advantage, in that they learn the right way to shift gears from the beginning. That right way doesn t involve any of the things we were taught about shifting Back in the Day, like double-clutching and heel-and-toeing. Now, you pretty much just yank the lever or the paddle, and the machine does the rest. I don t know where the SCCA stands on this trend. On the one hand, we design our Solo courses to reduce shifting to a minimum many days it s First to Second and then no changes all the way to the finish line. On the other hand, Club Racing still has Rule 9.3.7: Automatic transmissions are prohibited in all classes. In SCCA Club Racing, you re expected to row your own. According to Kyle Petty, that s the wrong way to shift gears. Could this be one more reason why it seems fewer and fewer professional racers come up through the SCCA? 2

Your Regional Executive s Message by Dave Deborde Our deepest sympathy and prayers to Gary Sorge s family. Jim and Wes will provide an update on Track and Solo events elsewhere in this issue of Road & Tach but I would like to comment that from my viewpoint both programs are doing well with reasonable attendance, good organization and most importantly the events have been FUN. Reno continues to explore the possibility of joining the increasing number of Rallycross Regions. As indicated last month, reno Director, Scott Knauf attended a Rallycross at Prairie City near Sacramento. Scott drove, monitored event operation and earned a Rallycross Safety License. Brent Blakely the NP Division representative on the SCCA Rallycross Board has offered assistance getting RallyX started in Reno and Scott reports that several Sacramento Rallycrossers are enthusiastic about attending our events. Pat Housel posted photo s of the regions VW Club Rallycross car which was donated by local members Ken and Connie Bogan. Pat is doing some prep work on the Reno Region RallyX car. A new set of struts have been donated for the car and the region would welcome a volunteer to do some body work and paint (This might be an opportunity for a local body shop to get some inexpensive long term advertising?) A number of members have cars they would Rallycross if we have a program. A couple sights have been identified for possible use. Rallycross is a possibility in Reno Region in A special thanks to Scott for his exploratory work and please let him know if you would be interested in helping put a program together. Any help would be appreciated! Reno Region will host a Tire Rack Street Survival on October at Stead Airport. Don Smith stepped up and volunteered to chair a TRSS and Gina Pogol will work on publicity. Don and Gina could use help organizing and promoting this worthwhile public service event. If you are interested please contact Carol or Dave Deborde at (775) or c_deborde@charter.net or d_deborde@charter.net. Carol and I just returned from an amazing Race Trip. As indicated previously we were the recipients of the SCCA Member of Excellence Award for 2010 which included an expense paid trip a race anywhere in the world. Our race of choice was the Formula 1 Telephonica Grand Prix of Europe held on the street circuit in Valencia, Spain June 25 27, On our way to Spain we decided to include a stop-over in Wisconsin to attend the Trans Am and MX5 Cup races held in conjunction with the NASCAR Nationwide Series race at Road America. TRANS-AM: Thanks to Chief Steward Dick Templeton we obtained an invitation to assist with Grid/Pit for Trans Am. SCCA Pro Racing operates significantly different from Club Racing. A handful of SCCA Pro officials operated the event with track personnel providing the Corner Workers, Emergency Crews, Security and equipment. Around twenty entries are typical for Trans Am and most travel to multiple events. I had the good fortune to help Kirk and Sandy Ready with Tech and Pit/Grid. Kirk and Sandy have tremendous working relationships with and the respect of the teams. Everyone works together to make the event run smoothly and efficiently. It was a pleasant experience to be sure! At this event the Nationwide Series cars, drivers and crews Continued on next page 3

Continued from previous page were isolated from the spectators and other participants. Not so with Trans-Am. The Trans-Am drivers, teams and cars were accessible to everyone. Spectators were invited come in and take a close look at the cars and discuss details with crew members. The Trans-Am drivers gathered for over an hour to autograph posters, shirts or whatever for spectators. Not only was Trans-Am much more accessible, Trans-Am also provided better racing. The cars were faster than the Nationwide cars and the Trans-Am provided far more green flag laps with good racing throughout the field. The weekend came to a close all too soon and it was time to pack up and head back to O Hare for flight to Frankfurt and on the Barcelona and Valencia. FORMULA 1: Following an overnight flight to Frankfurt and a two hour flight to Barcelona it was on to Valencia via train. Arriving in Valencia late afternoon Wednesday we were pleased to find that our hotel was just across the street from the place we were to pick up our credentials for the F1 Grand Prix of Europe. Thursday, following much needed sleep, it was time for a bus tour of Valencia to get acclimated and then on to the street circuit to check out the Formula 1 layout. Carol and I had some difficulty conforming to the local tradition of an afternoon siesta and late evening dinner at 9:00 pm to 11:00 pm. Thank goodness the Tapas Bars were open during the afternoon. Formula 1 had two practice sessions on Friday and a third on Saturday followed by a qualifying session in the afternoon. The Formula 1 race was scheduled for 57 laps (or 120 minutes) on Sunday afternoon. We used our credentials to access the F1 paddock. The team trailers were amazing as were the hospitality suites. The trailers were designed to telescope to two levels. Each team had two trailers set up with a space between them and an overhead mezzanine that connected the second floor of the trailers. The hospitality and crew facilities were all modular and were shipped in containers then assembled on-site. Formula 1 racing is truly several notches up from anything Carol or I have ever witnessed. At Valencia, the circuit runs around a yacht harbor that was the site for the conclusion of the Americas Cup race. For the race weekend the harbor was filled with corporate yachts. We acquired grandstands seating for the race but spent most of our time in the paddock and in the Red Bull hospitality suite taking advantage of the shade, the refreshments and the large screen monitors. The racing was excellent and except for Red Bull driver Mark Webber s spectacular accident relatively damage free. Red Bull driver Sebastian Vettel qualified on the pole and finished in first place. While he led from start to finish there was great racing going on back through the field. It looked to us like enthusiasm for Formula 1 in Europe surpasses that of NASCAR in the USA. There is tremendous team loyalty, particularly for Ferrari. Sure hope that F1 Grand Prix returns to the USA soon. For now it is time for Carol and me to return to the real world and head for home! We will not be at the Stead Solo July 12 & 13 because of 50 th High School Class Reunion back in Ann Arbor, Michigan (just can t wait to get on another airplane). Dave Deborde, Regional Executive 4

All of Reno Region is saddened by the news of the death of region member Gary Sorge while on vacation in Baja California. Gary drowned while attempting to rescue a young swimmer from rip currents in the surf, immediately after successfully rescuing his own son. Gary Sorge, Gary's ready smile and unfailing sunny demeanor will be missed at our events, both Solo and Track. Gary drove his coppercolored Porsche 911 to our B Stock Solo class championship last year and was already in the thick of the BS points chase this season. He also participated just last month at our Track Day at Reno-Fernley Raceway. Gary's untimely and indeed heroic death is a genuine tragedy. The region's heartfelt condolences go out to Gary's family and friends. Reno Region 2010 Events Schedule April 10 (Sat.) Solo Annual Tech Summit Racing April 16 (Fri.) Event Descriptions: Solo is a competition featuring one car at a time on a course defined by traffic cones (pylons). Top speeds are generally 65 mph or lower. Entry is open to almost all cars that pass a safety inspection. PDX (Performance Driving Experience) is held on a road course. It is non-competitive. Speeds are unlimited, passing is controlled, and instruction is required for novices. Entry is open to most cars. Track Trial is a competition for best lap time on a road course. Speeds are unlimited, passing is controlled. Track Trials require significant driver and car safety equipment. A Club Trial is a similar competition, but with fewer safety items required. A Tour is a group drive in the country. 5

Cone Calls By Wes Freisen, Director of Solo & Rally Events I want to thank all of you who helped make the past 2 solo events a success; event chairs, solo stewards, corner workers, registration, waivers, timing, and those that helped set up and take down the cones each day. Dave Deborde & Scott Knauf put on a good Memorial weekend event, with many of you staying for the Saturday BBQ. The driver participation was good with 75 drivers on Saturday and 78 drivers on Sunday. Last weekend Jerry Olofson helped me design and layout the course and helped run the events. Scott Knauf was the safety steward and kept everyone in line. The participation was down a bit with 58 drivers on Saturday and 64 drivers on Sunday, but that meant we got 6 runs each day. Last Friday during the course layout at Stead, there was some confusion as to where our course boundaries are, so I contacted Mike Dikun, the Stead manager and he gave me the course boundaries that we are to use. These are posted on our forum in the solo section under "Stead Course Boundaries". Basically they are back to what we used to use which gives us a larger area than we have used lately. The July solo events will be chaired by Larry Savage and Dean Benz. We also have the event chairs for the August and September solo events at RFR. These will both be on the upper course that we used last year. Wes Friesen, Solo events director Solo Points Races: Yes, There Are Some! In some ways, Reno Region s 2010 Solo season has been very different from others recently. For one thing, we ve avoided the, um, challenging weather conditions that plagued our early events the past couple of years. And for another, the gravel that continues to come up out of the year-old sealcoat at Stead Airport has had a very marked effect on our results, dealing a near-crippling blow to the chances of some entrants who would otherwise be considered favorites to win championships. One thing about 2010 is the same as before: the majority of our classes are essentially singleentrant affairs, with one person dominating over sporadic or non-existent competition. But we do have a number of classes where it s not over already, where in fact the championship just might go down to the final weekend, October 2-3 at Stead. Let s take a look Court Cardinal is making a strong run at the Super Stock title. 6 In Super Stock, Court Cardinal has found something, posting four straight wins over Bob Williamson to take a slim two-point lead for the championship. Could the lighter weight of Court s Continued on next page

Solo Points Chases, continued from previous page Road & Tach June/July 2010 Lotus be more suited to the low-grip surface at Stead than Bob s Vette? Alex Rademacher is using his rally driving skills to threaten a runaway in B Stock. He s getting more out of his 4WD Subaru, taking six straight wins over Vic Chalk s WRX. Meanwhile, Dave Jansen (Vette) and Bob Morrison (911) are in danger of falling out of the points chase altogether, further illustrating that this may not be the best year for two-wheel drive and lots of horsepower. C Street Prepared was tagged months ago as One to Watch, since it s been generating huge entry fields (at least by Reno Region standards). With strong runners often coming up from the Sacramento area, any Reno-area driver with hopes for the championship will have to make all the events and score as many points as possible on a given weekend. That seems to be Don Smith s strategy. He s only taken three firsts so far in his Miata, but he s managed to consistently place higher than the other Reno-area drivers and now holds a nine point lead over Tim McMaster (Miata). The new STR class may turn into a nail-biter before the season ends. Reno Region s Director of Solo Events, Wes Friesen, had the class all to himself in his Miata for the first three events. But then Larry Savage decided he didn t like his Porsche 944 s prospects in CSP and switched to STR. Larry s taken wins in the last four events, making this class deceptive; Wes 14-point lead may evaporate quickly in the summer sun. Only one points battle appears to be joined in the Ladies Classes, and that s C Stock Ladies where Rachel Kerswill (RX-8) now has competition from Patty Evans (350Z). Rachel took the first three events in Patty s absence, but Patty beat Rachel heads-up in the last four. The points show Rachel still in the lead, but the outcome may well be decided by how many events each driver decides to contest. The PAX battles are simply too chaotic to spot favorites at this point. The loose surface at Stead has taken the advantage away from the high-hp-to-weight cars that have been dominant at our altitude in the past. The surface also rewards four-wheel-drive, as expected. But there s a surprise at the top of the Open PAX charts. Kevin McDaniel, in a front-driver Mazda 3 running uncontested in H Stock this year, has taken two PAX wins and never finished lower than sixth. Kevin currently holds a very slim lead over a snarling pack of Subarus (Cody Farrell, Alex Rademacher, Matt Roy and Vic Chalk). Brian Nelson s Lotus is sixth, ahead of another Subie driven by Cory Davis. You have to reach down to eighth place to find a traditional Reno Region PAX favorite, the C5 Vette of Bob Williamson, slewing and sliding every event, trying to keep the power going to the ground. In Ladies PAX, Renee Chalk (WRX) and Rachel Kerswill (RX-8) looked like they were ready to trade wins all the way to October, as Renee took events one and two, and Rachel came out on top in event three. But then Patty Evans showed up in her 350Z, sweeping the next four events and exploding into the points picture far more drastically than her current seventh-place standing would indicate. And don t ignore Nina McDaniel, either. Nina hasn t participated consistently, but when she shows up, she s been getting faster. She finished second to Patty in Round 7, and one of the year-end PAX trophies would seem to be within her reach. 7 Don Smith has the inside track in C Street Prepared.

June 5 th Track Day Report, continued from Page 1 Road & Tach June/July 2010 request dates for our PDX, Club Trials and Track Trials events. We decided on three one-day events, with the first being Saturday, June 5 th. As the first event approached, region officials were cautiously optimistic, hoping that total attendance would meet our goal of 30, despite the sorry state of our state s economy. We were crossing our fingers that enough volunteer workers would commit to helping. And, we were also hoping Nevada s ever-fickle weather would give us a break. On June 5 th, Reno Region went three-for-three, a Hat Trick of hopes fulfilled! A total of 46 drivers came out to play on an absolutely gorgeous spring day, and we had plenty of volunteers to man all the flag stations and other tasks, from driving instructors to tech inspection. As an illustration of how our program now has depth it may have lacked before, volunteers in two key staff positions, Chief of Timing and Chief of Race Control, called in sick the morning of the event, and in both cases understudies were able to step in and perform flawlessly throughout the day. The region s thanks go to Lexie Wallace for a great job on the timing computer, and to Doug Driver on the radio and p.a. system. As is usual, the event actually started on Friday when several region members (including Pat Housel and Chief of Course Skip Gurnee) dusted off equipment stored since last fall and inspected the chosen track configuration, which for this event was H up the hill, across the ridgeline, down to the horseshoe, and around to the main straight. Some new paving had just been completed at the intersection at the south end of the ridge, as a critical left-hander had been widened. A new edge berm on the corner had been laid in asphalt rather than the usual concrete more on that later. After the usual morning crunch in tech, the event got underway within minutes of its scheduled time of 9:00 a.m. With the PDX entrants in a classroom session with Chief Instructor Dean Benz, drivers in Track Trials and then Club Trials had their practice sessions. Next came PDX A and B sessions as the students found their way around the course. After Club Trials timed qualified and another round of PDX sessions, it was time for lunch. At mid-day, the only track issue was that the new asphalt berm was deteriorating you can t keep Continued on next page Grid Marshal Marianne Welchert assembles the Club Trials field prior to their timed race session. 8

Continued from previous page eager drivers from putting their inside wheels on alligator teeth, grass or whatever is just off the racing surface, and the new asphalt hadn t cured enough to be able to take the pounding. The track sent out their new sweeper/blower to clear away the bits of gravel during the lunch break, and the afternoon sessions went on uninterrupted. By midafternoon, it was time for the serious business of the day timed race sessions for Club Trials and Track Trials. Club Trials went first, and as expected, Eric Gangloff made mincemeat of the entire 16-car field. Eric s sinister black Dave Deborde pilots the Motorsport Expo pace car Corvette at the head of the Track Trials group. Nissan GT-R is supremely capable and runs like a train, lap after lap it s so fast that he has to put down his fastest lap quickly after the green flag flies, otherwise he s constantly lapping slower traffic. He s so fast that he took Top Time of the Event, besting not only the Club Trials (streetable) cars, but also the entire Track Trials field of race-prepped machines. But Eric s blinding speed didn t completely blot out a terrific performance by the next-fastest Club Trials entry, Chris McMillen in a Corvette. Chris was only two seconds slower than Eric and almost a full five seconds faster than the next-fastest CT entrant, Pete Hitesman (Porsche). A bit further down the Club Trials results sheets, a great battle for the TT-6 class honors is continuing between Larry Savage (944) and Scott Knauf (BMW 3-series). Taking up where they left off last year, these two traded fast laps as the session progressed, with Scott finally taking the honors (by just sec.) on his seventh circuit, when as mentioned it s tough to get a clean, traffic-free lap. In Track Trials, ten race-prepped cars took the green flag, with the Radical sports racer driven by Robert Davidson capturing class and overall honors. Second through fourth was a dogfight to the end, though, as Chuck Johnson (Pro Challenge), Art Majors (Corvette), and Allen Wilt (Porsche 911) were only separated by a total of 0.12 seconds. Chuck set his best time early (lap 3), while Art and Allen were gaining speed as the session progressed and were fastest on lap 7 which is about the time that Vic Chalk s Honda Civic put an exclamation mark on the day by breaking its oil filter mount in the braking zone of the final turn. The Honda spun off in an enormous cloud of smoke, and the racing line was thoroughly doused with oil. After a brief yellow flag, race control called for the checker to end the session and the event. It took the better part of an hour and several bags of oil dry to clean up the mess. In all, it was a great start to Reno Region s 2010 Track Events program. Next up will be a new, experimental event: a PDX-only day on July 17 th. Our full Track Days program of PDX+CT+TT will return on August 28 th and October 30 th. Whether you re a driver, a volunteer, or you just would like to see for yourself why so many people are so excited by Track Days, mark your calendar and make plans to join us! 9

Ghost Solo Sites of Reno Region, PART 4 Reno Region is currently blessed with one of the best Solo sites in the West, Stead Airport. Even with the temporary problem of small gravel being shed by a sealcoat applied in the winter of , the ramp at Stead offers a great place to play: 13 acres of smooth, obstacle-free pavement. For many of Reno Region s members, it s the standard by which all other Solo sites are judged. To some extent, we re spoiled by Stead, and we resist the idea of going anywhere else. It wasn t always this way. For many years of its existence, Reno Region made do with Solo sites that today cause us to scratch our heads and wonder, How would you even put on an event there? Let s take a look at one such site, Grand Central. It was used by Reno Region back in the 1980s, and it exists today, essentially unchanged at least as far as its pavement is concerned. It s the side parking lot of what used to be a grocery store on Oddie Boulevard in Sparks, just a mile or so east of the Oddie off-ramp on U.S 395. The side lot Continued on next page This is the entire Grand Central Solo site. El Rancho Blvd is on the left, and the remains of the demolished store are to the right. 10

Ghost Solo Sites, continued from previous page faces El Rancho Boulevard on the west. For years, the site was known by the name of the store, Grand Central. The store changed hands and was also a Shopko and a Valu-Mart, but it closed for good sometime in the 90s. Apparently there were problems with the building s design, because the owners eventually had it torn down. The concrete pad was jackhammered into rubble that still sits on the spot. The rest of the strip center is still there, anchored by a Save-Mart on the east end. But it s the parking lot on the west side of the rubble field that Reno Region used for Solos, and it s still there today. The Grand Central site is incredibly tiny, compared to Stead. It measures only 315 feet by 190 feet. Paddock and sometimes even grid were usually located in the main front lot, but still, that only allows 1.25 acres for an autocross course with light poles and a drainage swale smack down the center. And don t forget there was a rather solid building foundation forming the east course boundary, too. Would you accept the challenge of designing a course on the Grand Central site? You d have to get very familiar with the course design rules in the National Solo Rulebook, things we often don t have to consider at places like Stead. The course can t be within 25 feet of a solid object, like the light poles you see in the picture. And, if an object is within 50 feet of the course, allowing karts to participate is strongly discouraged. You can t allow spectators or bystanders to be within 75 of the edge of the course that comes into play on three sides of the Grand Central site, severely crimping what you can do with course layout. The only thing you might do is prohibit spectators from being on the sides of the lot tough to accomplish when it s such a public area. That center drainage channel is a problem, too. Anyplace the course crosses the drain, it must be at a shallow angle to prevent stiffly sprung vehicles from losing control or breaking. You d also probably make each run three or even four laps nobody likes a 12- or 15-second course. A challenge? Sure. But once upon a time, Reno Region accepted it. And listen to this Grand Central wasn t the smallest site we ve ever used! Stead Site, 1240 x 450 ft Grand Central Site, 315 x 190 ft. 11
