2 WHY? - Pit Lane The IAAF Council added the Pit Lane Rule as a way of reducing (if not eliminating) disqualifications altogether. The Pit Lane will be used for the USATF Junior Olympic National Championship 1500 meter & 3000 meter Racewalks. USATF Association & Region Junior Olympic Championship meets may use the Pit Lane to ready their athletes for the National JO Championships. USATF Competition Rules 230.3(c) and (j) address the use of the Pit Lane.

3 WHAT? - Pit Lane The Pit Lane is a Penalty Area that athletes must pass through once they receive a 3rd red card. For the 3000 meter Racewalk a 30 second time penalty is served and the athlete must remain in the Pit Lane area until their penalty time is up. For the 1500 meter Racewalk a 30 second time penalty is added to the concerned athlete s finish time but no time is spent in the Pit Lane penalty area. (Due to the short length of this race the penalty is added after the race is completed.) The athlete must receive a 4th red card to be disqualified. The Pit Lane should only be used with a full team of Judges.

5 WHO? - Pit Lane At least two Pit Lane Officials are needed to manage the Pit Lane in addition to the standard team of Racewalk Officials. One Official (Paperwork) is needed to manage the operation of the penalty area and record pit lane activity. A second Official (Timer) to start the penalty timer and notify the athlete when their penalty has ended. (Two Timers may be needed for larger races) At least two Card Runners are required to get Red Cards from the Judges and to the Recorder quickly. The Recorder notifies the Chief Judge/Assistant and Pit Lane Officials of impending activity. The Chief Judge/Assistant must communicate the penalty to the athlete(s) concerned.

8 HOW? - Pit Lane When an athlete receives 3 red cards, the Recorder notifies the Chief Judge/Assistant. At the first opportunity the Chief Judge/Assistant, shows the concerned athlete the time penalty paddle and directs them into the Pit Lane. As the athlete enters the Pit Lane, the Pit Lane Timer immediately starts the penalty timer and the Pit Lane Official notes the real time of the athlete s entry, as well as their hip and bib numbers on the Pit Lane Time Sheet. When 10 seconds remain on the penalty, the Pit Lane Timer shows the athlete a card/paddle to notify them and starts counting down. When the time penalty has fully expired the Timer releases the athlete to re-enter the race.

9 HOWEVER - Pit Lane The athlete is not judged in the Pit Lane. The athlete can stop or continue moving inside the penalty area. No benches or access to refreshments, drinking, sponging or other kind of assistance is permitted. Communication with coaches is allowed. An athlete who fails to enter the Pit Lane when required to do so shall be disqualified. An athlete who receives 4 or more Red Cards before stopping in the penalty area shall be disqualified. If, after serving a penalty for 3 Red Cards, the athlete receives at least one additional Red Card (from Judges who had not previously written one), they shall be disqualified. If an athlete receives the 3rd Red Card at a late stage of the race and it s not possible for the Chief Judge/Assistant to notify the athlete that they must stop in the Pit Lane, then the athlete shall finish the race and the time penalty shall be added to their official time.

10 Considerations- Pit Lane Do not use the Pit Lane if you have four or fewer RW Judges on the track. Consider add a time penalty at the end of the race if you have at least four RW Judges. Use a Chief Judge Assistant to direct athletes to enter the Pit Lane. The Recorder or the Red Card Board Official can also act as Pit Lane Officials. An Chief Judge Assistant can also be the Pit Lane Official and/or Red Card Board Official. Clearly communicate to Athletes, Coaches and Parents how the Pit Lane will work for each event and distance.

(Good) Stopwatches (Not preferred - Counts up, no warnings or beeps. Close attention required.) NO Phones! (Phones are not allowed to be used on track or field of play under any circumstances.)
