These five drivers include three veterans and two rookies all trying to defend the honor of Texas. Series veteran Ara Malkhassian, of Houston, will lead his three-car ALARA Racing effort into battle on the streets of NRG Park. Rookie Timothy Reger, of Houston, is another driver vying to become the first hometown driver to win this race. Mazda MX-5 Cup rookie Chris Haldeman, from Princeton, Texas, just north east of Dallas, will also make his bid for the podium this weekend. Zach Lee and Bryan Hixon, both of San Antonio, Texas, are scheduled to make the start at the controls of their Skip Barber MAZDASPEED Pro Challenge machines. Story Leads The SCCA Pro Racing Mazda MX-5 Cup Series Presented by BFGoodrich Tires returns to Houston for a doubleheader event, to support the Shell and Pennzoil Grand Prix of Houston. This will be the second consecutive year, and third time in total, that the series will make a stop at the city that sits on the shores of the Gulf of Mexico. During last year s event, the race was cancelled due to a serious crash during the second race of the Verizon Indycar Series doubleheader. Points earned in the single qualifying session counted toward the year-end totals. Weather conditions could be a challenge. Last year, this race took place in October. With this year s date being moved to the end of June, temperatures will be higher, reaching the high 80s. If that weren t enough, there is a chance of rain forecasted each day of the three-day event, in the Houston area. 5

MX-5 Cup Weekend Facts and Story Leads John Dean (No. 16 Projections Research/PPG MX-5), of Sebring, Florida, is the team principal at Sick Sideways racing and the Championship point leader heading to Houston. During last year s race weekend, Dean was in the top five at the conclusion of the practice and qualifying sessions. Nathanial Sparks, of Spanish Fort, Alabama, will be at the controls of his No. 8 OOTSK Performance/Bimmerworld MX-5, fielded by Sick Sideways. On this return trip to the venue, Sparks has the opportunity to put last year s experience to good use in his quest to score his first win of Houston-based ALARA Racing, led by team principal Ara Malkhassian (No. 11 ALARA Racing MX-5), of Houston, has entered a three car effort for their home race. This will be the third time that Malkhassian will drive in front of the Houston crowd as he has been entered in each of the three Mazda MX-5 Cup events held there. The series stalwart will be joined by a pair of rookie teammates. Kenton Koch, of Glendora, California, and Timothy Paul, of Mahopac, New York, will be at the controls of Mazda MX-5 Cup spec machinery for the first time on the tight, short street course. While Koch, in the No. 12 ALARA Racing/Mazda Motorsports/BFGoodrich Tires MX-5, has a leg up with last year s race in the Pro Challenge class, the differences between the two cars may take some adjustment. For Paul (No. 6 ALARA Racing/Cellmark MX-5), this will be his first time at the event driving a car with fenders. Paul took part in last year s USF2000 race held at the venue. Atlanta Motorsports Group will field a total of four cars, matching CJ Wilson Racing as the largest team this weekend. The team is led by Sebastian Landy, of Great Falls, Virginia, who is enjoying a breakout season in his No. 49 Excitations.com/Atlanta Motorsports Group MX-5. Michael Cooper (No. 41 Atlanta Motorsports Group MX-5), of Syosset, New York, the 2011 series Champion, will be entered in his first full Mazda MX-5 Cup race weekend since winning the title. The father/son duo of Joseph Catania and Lucas Catania, both of Cazenovia, New York, will also be in action for Atlanta Motorsports Group. The younger of the two, Lucas (No. 17 Atlanta Motorsports Group/NY Spine & Wellness/SOS MX-5) will start the event fourth in the Championship. His father, Joseph, will take to the Houston street course for the first time in his No. 18 Atlanta Motorsports Group/NY Spine & Wellness/SOS MX-5. CJ Wilson Racing will bring a cadre of four young guns to Houston. Patrick Gallagher (No. 28 MedBuild/Henry Schein/ModSpace MX-5), of Thornville, Ohio, is the most experienced of the group and took part in last year s event. He will do his best to help his three rookie teammates learn the ins and outs of this unique and challenging course. Joey Bickers (No. 29 Mazda Motorsports/BFGoodrich Tires MX-5), of Moorpark, California, and Devin Jones (No. 35 Veristor MX-5), of Mooresville, North Carolina, have been with the series from the beginning of the season, making the learning process a little simpler. Brandon Kidd, of Manlius, New York, will have a taller task as he jumps into the No. 27 Monticello Motor Club MX-5 this weekend, a seat normally filled by Charles Paquin. A new team to the series at the beginning of the year, X-Factor Racing will have two cars at Houston. The more experienced Chris Haldeman (No. 20 X-Factor Racing MX-5), of Princeton, Texas, and Timothy Reger (No. 19 X-Factor Racing MX-5), of Houston, will take their first crack at the venue. 6

MX-5 Cup Weekend Facts and Story Leads A pair of single-car efforts will also make the trip south. Christian Tetzlaff, of Athens, Georgia, will pilot his customary No. 23 Lanier Tech/MAZDASPEED MX-5, while rookie Spencer Patterson, of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, will sit behind the wheel of his No. 79 Jim Locke Automotive MX-5. The top positions in the Skip Barber MAZDASPEED Pro Challenge Championship are in tight contention, as the top three drivers are covered by nine points. Drake Kemper (No. 99 Royal Rugby SBMX-5), of Toluca Lake, California, leads the scrum with 224 points. Ben Albano, of Greenwich, Connecticut, sits five markers back, in his No. 61 Project Yellow Light SBMX-5. 14 Last time at the Grand Prix of Houston 2013 Szymczak Takes Mazda MX-5 Cup Pole for Grand Prix of Houston HOUSTON (Oct. 5, 2013) Christian Szymczak, of Palos Verdes, Calif., captured his 10 th consecutive SCCA Pro Racing Playboy Mazda MX-5 Cup pole position in preparation for Sunday s championship Round 10, part of the Shell and Pennzoil Grand Prix of Houston. Elliott Skeer, of Carlsbad, Calif., and Jeff Mosing, of Austin, Texas, will start second and third, respectively. Driving the No. 34 ALARA Racing MX-5, Szymczak recorded a fast lap of 1: ( mph) around the 10-turn, mile temporary street circuit. While that was the official pole time, Patrick Gallagher set the fastest lap time and held the provisional pole position as the drivers exited the racing course. During the post-qualifying technical inspection, the ride height of Gallagher s No. 28 MAZDASPEED/Howard Concrete Pumping/CTL Engineering MX-5 was determined to be out of compliance. As a result, Gallagher s fast lap of 1: ( mph) was disallowed, along with the rest of the times he recorded during the session. He will begin Sunday s race from 18 th on the grid. After learning of the disqualification, Szymczak said he looked forward to the prospect of beginning Sunday s race at the front of the pack, in addition to the three bonus points that were awarded for the position. It makes it a lot sweeter when you don t think you have the pole, then someone comes up to you and tells you you ll be starting first,: Szymczak said. I feel better than before, and that is also three additional points in the championship fight. Skeer, who was promoted to second, had a fast lap of 1: ( mph) driving his No. 17 Pelican Replacement Windows/ZoomZoomNation.com/Alpinestars MX-5. Skeer will start on the outside of the front row, right next to his championship rival. It was a brand new track for most of us, as they took the chicane out on the front straight, Skeer said. We knew there was some time left out there during practice, so we spent a couple hours trying to find it. We found the additional speed by going over the curbs. As a team, we really had to band together to find a way to get back out front. I think we did a great job of that tonight. This race is going to be crazy. It s crunch time in the championship and it s going to be a very good race. Szymczak s teammate, Mosing, will start in third after stopping the lap timer at 1: ( mph) in the No. 13 ALARA Racing MX-5. Mosing said he will do what he can to race the competition tough, but fairly, with the goal of helping Szymczak. It s obvious that starting position is important here, Mosing said. There s really nowhere to get clean passes done. I m pretty happy that Christian [Szymczak] and I will start up front. Hopefully we can work together to build a gap to the rest of the field. Because I m only taking part in a couple races this year, points won t help me but they will help Christian [Szymczak]. I ll race fair and hard to do what I can do to get in the head of everyone else, so we can keep the ALARA Racing cars up front. Rookie Sebastian Landy will start fourth, following his lap of 1: ( mph) in the No. 49 Excitation.com MX-5. The result marks Landy s highest starting position of John Dean will take to the starting lights in fifth after clocking a 1: ( mph) behind the wheel of the No. 16 Projections Research/Sick Sideways MX-5. In the Skip Barber MAZDASPEED Pro Challenge, Kenton Koch, of Glendora, Calif., will also be the class polesitter for the 10 th time this season. He navigated his No. 63 Skip Barber Racing School SBMX-5 to a fast time of 1: ( mph). It was really hot out there again, Koch said. I know that my fastest lap came early in the session. Midway through, I got out of my rhythm, but was able to get back into it and starting working my times back down. It s going to be really tough to make clean passes during the race. Starting on pole is a good thing, but we are still going to start behind all the Cup cars. So, one thing we have to watch for is a wreck on the track ahead. Even in this ten-minute session, the brakes built up a lot of heat. Being able to manage the temperature during the race will be very important. Robby Foley, of Randolph, N.J., had a best time of 1: ( mph), which was good enough for second, followed by Lucas Bize, of New York, with a time of 1: ( mph). Mazda MX-5 Cup Race at Grand Prix of Houston Cancelled HOUSTON (Oct. 6, 2013) Round 10 of the SCCA Pro Racing Playboy Mazda MX-5 Cup has been cancelled by the promoter of the Shell and Pennzoil Grand Prix of Houston, following damage to the circuit s catch fence. 14

Last time at the Grand Prix of Houston 2013 The damage was caused by a last-lap collision during the IZOD IndyCar race. As a result, track promoters have cancelled the remaining two races scheduled for Sunday afternoon. The collision caused extensive damage to the catch fence above the concrete retaining wall on the outside of Turn Five. Mazda MX-5 Pole Qualifying Points to Stand Following Cancelled Houston Race TOPEKA, Kan. (Oct. 10, 2013) SCCA Pro Racing Playboy Mazda MX-5 Cup officials declared Wednesday that the series pole sitters will receive the three points earned during qualifying, prior to the cancellation of the race on the streets of Houston. No additional points will be awarded for the cancelled Round 10 race. Christian Szymczak, of Palos Verdes, Calif., extended his championship lead to 531 points, with Elliott Skeer, of Carlsbad, Calif., now 15 markers behind. John Dean, of Sebring, Fla., remains in third with 486 points. In the Skip Barber MAZDASPEED Pro Challenge, Kenton Koch, of Glendora, Calif., remains at the top of the standings after collecting 569 points so far this season. Robby Foley, of Randolph, N.J. sits second, 98 behind, followed by Drake Kemper, of Toluca, Calif., with 469 points. 15

2014 Race Recaps Koch Tallies first Mazda MX-5 Cup Win in Round One at Sebring SEBRING, Fla. (March 13, 2014) Rookie Kenton Koch, of Glendora, Calif., started his bid for the 2014 SCCA Pro Racing Mazda MX-5 Cup Presented by BFGoodrich Tires Championship on the right foot, winning Round One at Sebring International Raceway as part of the 62 nd Annual Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring Fueled by Fresh from Florida. John Dean, of Sebring, Fla., finished second, followed by Sebastian Landy, of Great Falls, Va., in third. Driving the No. 12 ALARA Racing/Mazda Motorsports Development MX-5, Koch was scored as the leader only once during the race that average mph around the 17-turn, 3.74-mile permanent airport course. However, it happened to be the most important lap, the last one. Koch spent the entire 16-lap race in the lead group of cars, but spent most of his time in second trying to force then-leader Dean into a mistake. All the while, Koch was holding off challenges from Landy in third. Koch had to wait until the last turn of the last lap to make his move for the lead. On the approach to Turn 17, Koch was able to take the inside line. Driving through the dirty, unused part of the inside of the turn, Koch was able to hang on and win the drag race to the line. The marks the second year that a last-lap, last-corner pass was the decisive move of a Mazda MX-5 Cup race at Sebring. Last year, Elliott Skeer took a win over Christian Szymczak year in much the same fashion. I didn t think I had anything for Dean Copeland and John Dean when they were up front, Koch said. If the opportunity arose I would have taken advantage, but then Copeland dropped out allowing me to get back up to Dean. Without a drafting partner I was able to get to Dean s rear bumper, but he was getting out of the corners really well. I was having some problems getting the power down coming out of Turn 16. I was working to improve that the whole race. When it came down to crunch time, I was able to get a good run off 16 headed into Turn 17 on the last lap. I was surprised how emotional it was to win that race. I could feel the tears in my eyes after crossing the line. It s a long season, but this is a great way to start the year. Throughout the race, Dean did everything he could have done to bring home the win. Starting from the pole in his No. 16 Projections Research/PPG MX-5, Dean led the first two laps. Dean Copeland then took a turn at the front on lap three, until Dean reclaimed the lead one lap later. Two laps later, Copeland was back in the lead for two laps before his clutch gave out. Dean reclaimed the point and held it until lap 16. It was really close at the line, Dean said. I would have liked to have been the one to win the race, but we had a really good run. The car worked pretty well. I may have missed on a setting, but it worked well. I couldn t break away from the field, and after two laps I stopped even trying to drive away from the pack. I just tried to keep the tires under me and ran a bit defensively so I could lead the most laps. It s important to do that for championship points, but it s just tough leading the last lap until the last corner and not getting the win. Turn 17 is so tough to defend, because if you do too much you run the risk of dropping back to third. [Koch] got a good run out of Turn 16 and was just able to squeeze by. I was hoping to try and hold the position around the outside, but both cars were just dancing through the corner. It got a bit risky, so I breathed the throttle to keep the car in second. Landy recorded his best career finish in the series, completing the podium in third. Landy drove his brand new 2014 Excitations.com/Atlanta Motorsports Group MX-5 hard, constantly threatening to get around the leaders if a mistake was made. Landy also successfully defended his position after battling with Ara Malkhassian for the final podium position. My progression from last year to this year has taken a lot of hard work, both from me and the standpoint of the car, Landy said. The Atlanta Motorsports Group crew has done a wonderful job working on, and prepping, the car. You couldn t ask for a better car at this racetrack. It takes a special finesse to get the most out of these cars, which is different from a lot of other cars. Third is a great way to start the year. In the No. 11 ALARA Racing MX-5, Malkhassian made sure it wasn t just a young man s game at the front. He showed the mistake-free, quick pace commensurate with his experience in the series. He made sure young Landy earned his third-place finish. Rookie Lucas Catania also made a good showing in his maiden race, finishing fifth in this Mazda MX-5 Cup field. Driving his No. 17 Atlanta Motorsports Group/N.Y. Spine & Wellness/SOS MX-5, Catania was the second Atlanta Motorsports Group-supported car in the top five. In the Skip Barber MAZDASPEED Pro Challenge class, Drake Kemper, of Toluca Lake, Calif., notched his second career win in the class. Driving the No. 99 Royal Rugby SBMX-5, Kemper kept his nose clean, taking advantage of then-leader Robby Foley getting tangled up with another car. 16

2014 Race Recaps I didn t qualify as well as I would have liked, Kemper said. The car just didn t feel great. In the race, I had an awesome start and got into second by the end of lap two. Robby [Foley] and I battled until the double yellow came out, which hurt me and helped him. We kept running together after the restart until he [Foley], was taken out by some other cars. Entering Turn 7, he was hit by a couple cars that got on the brakes too late to make the corner. Bryan Hixon, of San Antonio, Texas, drove the No. 63 Blackmore Partners/xBorder Foods & Wine SBMX-5 to a second-place finish, followed by Johan Schwartz, of Charlotte, N.C., in the No. 98 Promatex/Pipefish/Instrumart SBMX-5. Hometown Hero Dean Takes Mazda MX-5 Cup Round Two at Sebring SEBRING, Fla. (March 14, 2014) John Dean, of Sebring, Fla., scored an emotional victory in front of family, friends and supporters in Round Two of the SCCA Pro Racing Mazda MX-5 Cup Presented by BFGoodrich Tires as part of the 62 nd Annual Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring Fueled by Fresh from Florida. Kenton Koch, of Glendora, Calif., finished second, followed by Dean Copeland, of Bowie, Md. Dean bounced back to take the second win over Koch, following a second place finish in Thursday s Round One which was decided by second. The race was slowed to an average of mph around the 17-turn, 2.74-mile permanent airport course due to a four-lap caution period brought out when Johan Schwartz and Zach Lee collided in Turn Three on lap six. Both drivers were okay following the incident. This race marked Dean s second win at the circuit in Mazda MX-5 Cup competition, however this win was comparatively more comfortable than his first win in Driving the No. 16 Projections Research/PPG MX-5, Dean exerted his control on the race from the beginning by completing the opening 12 laps in the lead. On lap 13, Copeland took over the top spot, but that was short lived as Dean recaptured the position for the remaining two laps. En route to the win, Dean also lowered the race-lap record to 2: ( mph). It s so much fun to be able to win in front of my friends and family, Dean said. Yesterday was a bit of a bummer. I really wanted to win, but that just made me push harder today. I went back to the drawing board, talked to the BFGoodrich guys a bit, and was able to find a setting that was able to make the tire work today. Dean [Copeland] had a fantastic race, today. He got up there and it s always fun to race with him because he s clean, but very aggressive. That added some additional character to the top three. In the end, it may have helped me out that he was toward the front. This is my second win here, in Mazda MX-5 Cup, but I ve also been on the podium in all six races that the series has been here. That s really cool and I was really hoping to do that. I ve got a lot of supporters behind me and the team, and it feels really good to bring home trophies. Driving the No. 12 ALARA Racing/Mazda Motorsports Development MX-5, Koch was in a position to repeat his win from Thursday. For all but two laps, Koch was lurking in second waiting to pounce if the opportunity arose. However, passing the determined Dean, while holding back the charging Copeland, proved to be unfeasible. I was really hoping there wasn t going to be a caution, Koch said. I was nipping at Dean s heels for the first part of the race. It really came down to who was going to make the least number of mistakes. I would make one mistake, and it would drop me a tenth, then he would make a mistake, and I would gain a tenth. Once I got in a rhythm, I started to reel Dean in. When the caution came out, I was a little frustrated. I knew Copeland was right behind us and that we had been gapping him before that. Once he [Copeland] got back into the mix, it was a four-way battle for the lead, like yesterday. On the last lap, I was in third and was able to get by Copeland on the back straight and was able to move to P2. The series is extremely competitive, and it seems more that way this year than any other. With all the teams getting their stuff together, and Atlanta Motorsports Group coming back, it will be intense. Copeland notched his first podium finish of the young season, at the controls of the No. 7 Copeland Motorsports/Sync Speed Inc. MX-5. The finish came on the heels of a strong race, in Round One, that ended early due to a broken transmission. We had a horrible start, Copeland said. We got off in some slippery dew from this morning, in Turn One. Sebastian [Landy] and I got wide and slid a little. We lost the top two there, and spent the first half of the race trying to reel them in. Once the caution came out, it was on from there. We go out in the front with two laps left, and those guys just lined up on me. They got hooked up and I really didn t have much for them. On the last lap we had some wheel spin out of Turn 16 and John [Dean] pulled away. It s bittersweet. I thought we had a better car yesterday, when the transmission broke, but I ll take it. Driving the No. 41 Excitations.com/Atlanta Motorsports Group MX-5, Sebastian Landy finished Friday s race in the fourth position. The finish marks Landy s second top-five result in as many races. 17

2014 Race Recaps Finishing fifth was Andrew Charbonneau, who drove the No. 15 ALARA Racing MX-5. The finish was a marked improvement for the SCCA National Champion driver who qualified sixth. In Thursday s race, Charbonneau also started sixth but was unable to hold the position resulting in a 13 th -place finish. Bryan Hixon, of San Antonio, Texas, took the class win in the Skip Barber MAZDASPEED Pro Challenge, while driving his No. 63 Blackmore Partners/xBorder Foods & Wine SBMX-5. His win from the class pole puts him in the lead of the season-long championship point battle. Ben Albano, of Greenwich, Conn., took second place in class, followed by Drake Kemper, of Toluca Lake, Calif., in the No. 99 Royal Rugby SBMX-5. Dean Takes Opening Mazda MX-5 Cup Race at Mazda Raceway MONTEREY, Calif. (May 2, 2014) John Dean, of Sebring, Florida, notched his second consecutive SCCA Pro Racing Mazda MX-5 Cup Presented by BFGoodrich Tires win taking Round Three at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, as part of the Monterey Grand Prix Powered by Mazda. Kenton Koch, of Glendora, California, came home second, followed by Sebastian Landy, of Great Falls, Virginia. Dean did not get off to a smooth start, in a very literal sense, for the 45-minute race that averaged mph around the 11- turn, mile permanent road course. Starting from second in his No. 16 Projections Research/PPG MX-5, Dean had a good start next to Koch, the polesitter. Koch missed a shift going from first to second gear, giving Dean a slight advantage. Then Dean did the same thing going from second to third, equalizing the two cars going into Turn Two. Dean would come out on top, taking the early lead. The race at the front did not end there. Following two separate incidents that forced Charles Paquin and Chris Beaufait off track in Turn Four, a full-course caution was called. The field circulated behind the pace car for five laps, with Dean in the lead. Following the restart Landy took the lead from Dean and held the position for five laps. By the conclusion of Lap 14, Dean had regained the lead and worked to put a gap between himself and second place. Those first few laps were tight and fun, Dean said. When Landy was able to squeeze by Koch, for second, I was pretty stoked from a points perspective. On the restart, I was trying not to get to the throttle too early, but everyone managed to drive by me. I had to really fight to get back by Landy for the lead. Once I did, those guys [Landy and Koch] had a real battle, giving me the chance to break away. It was tough to run as hard as I could, but save the tires at the same time. Once Dean got around Landy, it was Koch s turn to go on the attack. At the controls of his No 12 ALARA Racing/Mazda Motorsports/BFGoodrich Tires MX-5, Koch was able to make an outside pass, on Landy, at Turn Two stick. From there, Koch was able to hold onto the second position. I think I went from the front to the back of the lead pack a couple times, Koch said. I made a couple moves out there that hurt me. At one point, in Turn Five, I took a look around the outside of Landy which made me a little loose and cost me a couple positions. I think we had the pace to hang with John [Dean], but we just ran out of time today. It was a fun race, but also a little frustrating. In the No. 41 Excitations.com/Atlanta Motorsports Group MX-5, Landy showed he is a force to be reckoned with in With a new team, Landy is brimming with confidence after scoring his second podium finish of the young season. I was waiting for the race to come to me and saw the two Skip Barber cars off course, Landy said. So I thought to myself that I should make up a couple positions before the double yellow comes out. I was able to do that, then had a great restart to get around John [Dean]. Both Dean and Koch were able to get back around me, but we raced each other cleanly and fairly. I feel great with what we have done this year. There s a different feeling when you re running toward the front in a series like this, which is so competitive. But, there s a part of me that wants to get to the top step of that podium. That s what keeps me striving for more. Finishing just off the podium, in fourth, was Lucas Catania, of Cazenovia, New York. He had a strong showing, passing four cars for position in his No. 17 Atlanta Motorsports Group/New York Spine & Wellness/SOS MX-5. Patrick Gallagher, of Thornville, Ohio, brought his No. 28 MedBuild/Henry Schein/ModSpace MX-5 home in fifth. He was part of the lead pack for the entire racing, getting as far up as third place on lap 10. In the Skip Barber MAZDASPEED Pro Challenge, Ben Albano, of Greenwich, Connecticut, took his first win in the series. 18

2014 Race Recaps It s awesome to win at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, Albano said. Being a part of this whole Mazda Community is such a great thing. This was my second time racing at this track. I ran the 2012 Skip Barber Summer Series here, and was right with Kenton [Koch]. I almost had him, too, which gave me a lot of confidence since this is his home track. This is a great launching point for the rest of the season. This is not the finale, by any means. It s a really great benchmark for what we can do for the rest of the season. Completing the podium was Robby Foley, of Randolph, New Jersey, and Lucas Bize, of New York. Following Round Three, Dean holds the Mazda MX-5 Cup Championship lead with 189 points. Koch sits 13 points back, in second, while Landy is third, with 158 points. In the Skip Barber MAZDASPEED Pro Challenge Drake Kemper holds the Championship lead with 170 points. Bryan Hixon sits six markers behind, with Albano in third with 163 points. Koch Secures Mazda MX-5 Cup Round Four at Mazda Raceway MONTEREY, Calif. (May 3, 2014) Kenton Koch, of Glendora, California, took home the SCCA Pro Racing Mazda MX-5 Cup Presented by BFGoodrich Tires Round Four win at his home track of Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, part of the Monterey Grand Prix Powered by Mazda. John Dean, of Sebring, Florida, finished second, as Sebastian Landy, of Great Falls, Virginia, completed the podium. Driving a special Gumby-inspired livery on his No. 12 ALARA Racing/Mazda Motorsports/BFGoodrich Tires MX-5, Koch led all but one lap in the time-shortened race that lasted 40 minutes and averaged mph around the 11-turn, mile permanent road course. The start of what was scheduled to be a 45-minute timed race starting at 8:00 a.m. (PDT), was delayed by 10 minutes due to on-course visibility issues caused by thick fog that hung over the race course. Once deemed safe to proceed with pace laps, the 40-minute clock was started as the field circulated four times behind the pace car. The green flag was flown for the double-file, rolling start as the leaders passed by the line to begin lap five. After being turned loose, Koch drove around Dean on lap two to take the early lead. From that point on, Koch put his head down and focused on smooth driving to stay ahead of Dean. It wasn t an easy win, Koch said. It may have looked easy since I led each lap, but I had to be mistake-free. John [Dean] is an awesome driver. He s one of the quickest, most consistent guys out there. For me to be able to stay in front of him makes me feel really good. I hope this can help build some momentum into the next two races. Dean said that the delay before the start of the race hurt his chances of taking home a win in his No. 16 Projections Research/PPG MX-5. When we got delayed for the fog, that hurt our strategy with tire temperatures, Dean said. We ended up getting a little hotter than we were expecting. So, we overshot with the tires. Kenton [Koch] was running really well, and I was just trying to hang in there to take advantage if he pushed his tires too hard. At one point, I missed a shift coming off the last corner allowing him to pull a small gap. I just stayed there the rest of the race, unable to get close. It s a wash for the points, so we ll go to the next one and try to squeeze out some more. For Landy, the rolling start gave him an opportunity to make the best of his fourth-place starting position. At the controls of his No. 41 Excitations.com/Atlanta Motorsports Group MX-5, Landy was passed by Joey Bickers at the drop of the green flag. Bickers then engaged his CJ Wilson teammate, Patrick Gallagher, in battle for the third position. Landy made the most of that situation, taking the position for himself. It was a bit crazy in the beginning with the rolling start, Landy said. I got bumped as the flag dropped, knocking me into neutral. Bickers got by me on the start heading into Turn Two. Then, Gallagher got a bad run out of Two and I managed to split both of them [Bickers and Gallagher]. As they started to fight, I was able to pull away. By the time I got back into third, at the end of lap one, the top-two drivers had already pulled out a large gap. Bickers crossed under the checkered flag in the fourth position. In his No. 29 Mazda Motorsports/BFGoodrich Tires MX-5, Bickers battled for supremacy over Gallagher for the entire 21-lap race. The two drivers traded positions six times, officially. Bickers was ahead of the No. 28 MedBuild/Henry Schein/ModSpace MX-5 of Gallagher at the end of lap 18, and held on for the last three laps to finish less that 0.2-second in front of his teammate. Lucas Bize, of New York, took home the winner s hardware in the Skip Barber MAZDASPEED Pro Challenge class. He used a combination of patience, smooth driving and slower traffic to move forward from his fourth-place grid position. 19

2014 Race Recaps It was a tough race, Bize said. I knew I needed to make the tires last for the whole race. So, I did what I could to get out front. Once I got the lead, I just focused on hitting my marks. On the heels of yesterday s win, Ben Albano, of Greenwich, Connecticut, finished second. In his No. 99 Royal Rugby SBMX-5, Drake Kemper, of Toluca Lake, California, completed the Skip Barber podium. Dean leaves California with his Championship lead intact, after collecting a total of 246 points. Koch also holds station in second, eight markers behind, while Landy sits third with 211 points. In Pro Challenge Championship, Kemper takes over the championship lead from Bryan Hixon, after collecting 224 points. On the strength of a win and second-place finish, Albano is only five markers behind Kemper. Meanwhile Hixon occupies third with 215 points. 20
