Stuart McNay (Boston, Mass.) and Graham Biehl (San Diego, Calif.) won a silver medal in the Men s 470, while Erik Storck (Huntington, N.Y.) and Trevor ALPINE SKIING: Ligety, Vonn Back on the Podium Photo: Getty Images Ted Ligety (Park City, Utah) mastered the icy Alta Badia, Italy, slope to capture his third consecutive GS victory Sunday and take the first World Cup overall lead of his career. The last time a World Cup male won three consecutive GS races was Austrian great Hermann Maier during the 2001 season. Bode Miller (Franconia, N.H.) also landed in the GS points for his second time this season with 15th. Just over an hour after Ligety stepped off the podium, his teammate Lindsey Vonn (Vail, Colo.) stepped back up, winning the super combined in Val d Isere, France to mark the second time this season she and Ligety have won on the same day. Two weeks ago, Ligety thrilled the home crowd in Beaver Creek while Vonn snagged a super G win at Lake Louise, Alberta. Vonn regained the overall lead over German Maria Riesch, winning the Audi FIS Alpine World Cup super combined to sweep the weekend in Val d Isere. On Saturday, Vonn captured a stunning victory in the downhill to regain the Audi FIS Alpine World Cup downhill standings. Teammate Julia Mancuso (Squaw Valley, Calif.) was eighth with five Americans finishing inside the top 30, including Leanne Smith (18th, Conway, N.H.), Laurenne Ross (25th, Klamath Falls, Ore.) and Alice McKennis (30th, Glenwood Springs, Colo.). 4 pians Nolan Kasper (Warren, Vt,) and Will Brandenburg (Spokane, Wash.) finished second and fifth in the Pozza di Fassa night slalom. Earlier in the week Will Gregorak (Longmont, Colo.) finished second in a Europa Cup slalom in Obereggen with David Chodounsky (Crested Butte, Colo.) fifth. Athlete of the Year Saturday, Vonn received one of the highest honors in global sport. The Associated Press announced her as its Female Athlete of the Year the first time a skier has received the honor. CROSS-COUNTRY SKI- ING: Career Bests for Stephen, Arritola The U.S. Cross Country Ski Team s Liz Stephen (E. Montpelier, Vt.) and Morgan Arritola (Sun Valley, Idaho) skied to career best finishes with 18th and 19th in the women s 15k mass start event. Kris Freeman (Andover, N.H.) finished in 25th in the men s 30k mass start. FREESTYLE SKIING: Teller Third in Skicross World Cup Great weekend for U.S. skiers By Alan Abrahamson If only skiing were like the NFL in these United States, Lindsey Vonn and Ted Ligety would be famous like Tom Brady and Peyton Manning. A ski fan can dream. American John Teller (Mammoth, Calif.) raced his way onto the podium Sunday with third in the skicross World Cup in Innichen, Italy. It marked a career best on the World Cup stage for Teller. He is the first American to stand on a World Cup skicross podium since Daron Rahlves finished second in St. Johann, Austria, last January. A weekend like the one the U.S. ski and snowboard team enjoyed this third weekend of December underscores the enormous American talent now on display on mountains all over the world -- a thing that over the years could not always be said about the Americans. Individual talent, yes. Consistent talent, no. Now, though, there s consistency, and consistency is the hallmark of any great program. In this post-olympic season, the weekend showing also highlights the enormous backstage commitment, continuity, purpose and leadership it takes to get the athletes in position to deliver their best -- the systems that include trainers, technicians, coaches and, at the top, longtime U.S. Ski and Snowboard Assn. boss Bill Marolt. Marolt, in a telephone interview, downplayed his own role, as he routinely does, saying the credit is due the athletes, the coaches and the support staff. It all starts with talent, he said. NORDIC SKIIING: Breakthrough Finish for Fletcher Christmas came a week early for Bryan Fletcher (Steamboat Springs, Colo.) who set himself up with a strong jump then carried his own to finish a career-best eighth in the FIS Nordic Combined World Cup Individual Normal Hill/10k Gundersen in Ramsau, Austria. It was his fourth point scoring finish of the year. Todd Lodwick (Steamboat Springs, Colo.) finished 18th. Bryan Fletcher s brother, Taylor Fletcher, had an impressive cross country segment sixth fastest to move up from 58th in jumping to take 37th. Nick Hendrickson (Park City, Utah) was 22nd in cross country to finish 45th overall. Lodwick came back to the World Cup in style Saturday, finishing fourth in the Individual Normal Hill/10k and missing the podium by Photos: Ted Ligety (top) & Lindsey Vonn by Getty Images a tenth. It marked a return to the World Cup for the Olympic silver medalist, who took the opening two weekends off to train at home. Fletcher took 23rd. Ski Jumping Defending World Champion Lindsey Van (Park City, Utah) continued to be a factor in the women s Continental Cup Saturday finishing fourth in the final competition of a two-day event. SKELETON: Antoine Fourth, O Shea Among Top 10 in Lake Placid Matt Antoine (Prairie du Chien, Wisc.) finished just one spot out of the medals in men s skeleton World Cup event at the Olympic Center in Lake Placid, N.Y. The accomplished slider slid a total time of 1:49.05 after posting runs of and seconds to finish fourth. John Daly (Smithtown, N.Y.) could taste victory after unofficially breaking the track record in Thursday s training. He was in fourth after a first run of seconds, but fell back into 10th after sliding a second run of U.S. veteran Eric Bernotas (Avondale, Pa.) finished 12th with a total time of 1:49.65.

5 Annie O Shea (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.) secured her first top 10 finish of the season in front of a strong contingent of family and friends in today s World Cup event. She powered off the block in 5.38 seconds and followed up with a 5.36 in the second run, and she finished with a combined time of 1:53.24, 1.29 seconds off the pace of winner Marion Thees of Germany. USA s other slider, Kimber Gabryszak (Park City, Utah), finished 15th with a combined time of 1: PGS The LG FIS Snowboard World Cup continued in a snowy Telluride Resort on Thursday with Slovenian rider Rok Flander and Fraenzi Maegert-Kohli from Switzerland taking wins in the men s and women s Visa Parallel Giant Slalom races. U.S. athletes Tyler Jewell (Steamboat Springs, Colo.) and Vic Wild (White Salmon, Wash.) did not make the flip into the final round. Lindsay Lloyd (Centerville, Utah) finished in 26th. SPEEDSKATING: Short Track World Cup Team Named The U.S. National Short Track Speedskating Championships concluded Sunday in Kearns, Utah, as Katherine Reutter (Champaign, Ill.) and Jeff Simon (Las Vegas, Nev.) skated to national championship titles. Wescott led the way for two other U.S. athletes into the top 10 with Jonathan Cheever (Saugus, Mass.) finishing sixth and Alex Deibold (Manchester Center, Vt.) in seventh. On the women s side U.S. teammates Lindsey Jacobellis (Stratton Mountain, Vt.) and Callan Chythlook-Sifsof (Girdwood, Alaska) took the lead in the day s small final finishing fifth and sixth, respectively. Team Cheever and Deibold were second, team Nick Baumgartner (Iron River, Mich.) and Jayson Hale (Sierraville, Calif.) were third, and for the women Jacobellis and Chythlook-Sifsof were third.
