Update status quo and activities since last meeting in Kraków Current Status 25 Institutional Members have joined EUROSPINE since October This adds up to almost 6,850 spine specialists from across Europe. CORE DECISIONS Rationale and Commitment of EuSSAB EUROSPINE s goal is to act as facilitator for EuSSAB to bring national societies together and discuss issues of common interest for the benefit of all their members and the patient EUROSPINE offers the platform but there is no intention to position EUROSPINE as superior organisation above any national/ specialist spine societies Intended to be a symbiotic and mutual win-win relationship between EUROSPINE and all of its allied national/ specialist spine societies. The members of EuSSAB will define common goals, challenges and strategies in order to solve them as equal partners Responsibility is transferred to Institutional Members 3

4 Guidelines for Cooperation Associate Members will not be contacted directly by EUROSPINE Only indirect communication between EUROSPINE and its Associate Members via Institutional Societies, who may forward documents to their members at their own discretion Institutional Membership/ Associate Membership free of charge Associate Members will receive certain advantages such as annual reports, access to webcasts, benefit from large networking platforms/ alliances etc. Benefits Free access to webcasts from the Annual General Meetings Institutional Membership benefits (e.g. participation in one educational curriculum) In order to gain access to the full range of EUROSPINE membership benefits, associate members have to apply for a full EUROSPINE membership. 5 Basic entry criteria of societies for EuSSAB membership access A national society which represents the majority of national spine specialists ( relevant society ) Should have a democratic process Should ideally be multidisciplinary Voting process As a rule the following applies: 1 country = 1 society = 1 representative = 1 vote For countries with more than one society: 1 country = multiple societies = multiple representatives = 1 vote. Thus, countries with >1 society may have to alternate voting rights If multiple countries are represented within one society (i.e. Russia, Ukraine): 1 society = multiple countries = 1 representative =1 vote Decisions are generally made based on the majority of votes. ROLE OF EUSSAB REPRESENTATIVE FUNCTION To ensure optimal interaction between EuSSAB and EUROSPINE Executive Committee Will be invited to certain EUROSPINE ExCom meetings where relevant EuSSAB issues will be addressed No voting rights/ permanent seat EuSSAB Representative as well as EuSSAB (Vice-) Representative will be selected in current round ELECTION OF EUSSAB REPRESENTATIVE AT SELECTED EUROSPINE EXCOM MEETINGS It was agreed that the candidate with the highest vote would be elected to office in the first term (EuSSAB Representative), the candidate with the second highest vote would become EuSSAB Vice-Representative and thus lead in the following year (from Annual Meeting 2017) Thus, the upcoming annual meeting in Dublin 2017 will only entail one election of another vice representative (who will be in office from 2018). 5

6 According to the voting results Johan van Lerbeirghe was elected as the 1 st EuSSAB Representative. A 2 nd voting round declared Christoph Josten as EuSSAB Vice-Representative. Congratulations to both, and a sincere appreciation from EuSSAB and EUROSPINE to ALL candidates for their tremendous support over the last three years! DEFINITION OF GUIDELINES FOR COOPERATION Define how EuSSAB wants to operate e.g. further define voting rightsπ Rotation of EuSSAB representation at ExCom between countries etc. Suggestions to prepare guidelines in a format similar to the EuSSAB Education Workshop (e.g. 1 day airport meeting) The idea was well received and supported by all attendees Next step: will be sent out after the meeting to determine who would be interested as well as to allocate to adequate date and time of the meeting. 6

It would be much appreciated if you could display EUROSPINE s website and logo (attached) on your national society s website in order to support mutual promotion. Kindly note the correct way of writing EUROSPINE: EUROSPINE, the Spine Society of Europe (not EuroSpine or Eurospine) correct abbreviation: EUROSPINE (not SSE) Your efforts in this respect would be very appreciated. Furthermore, EUROSPINE offers to display your events in their new online events calendar ( The meetings should be of particular interest to both neurosurgeons, orthopaedic and trauma surgeons practising in the field of spinal surgery and also to researchers and other professionals dedicated to conditions of the spine. 5. Chaklin established the principles and practice of anterior approaches to the thoracolumbar spine for the international orthopaedic community in 1940, spinal surgery in Russia has developed quickly on a national level. In the former Soviet Union, centres for spinal research were located in the central regions of Novosibirsk, Sverdlovsk, and Novokuzneck. Following the breakup of the Soviet Union, the centre of spinal surgery moved further west to the largest cities, such as Moscow and St. Petersburg, as those cities receive 80% of available funding. However, the principles established at the Ural and Siberian Spinal Surgery School still play an important role in modern Russian spinal health care. In Russia, fewer than 10% of patients with spinal deformities receive required specialised spinal operations. In 2009, the Russian Association of Spine Surgeons (RASS ) was 8

9 founded in response to the high demand for surgical spinal care. Its main goals are to provide high-tech spinal surgical care for patients and to organise educational programmes for spine surgeons. RASS currently has 35 regional branches with almost 350 members. The association s Spine Surgery Journal began publishing in 2006 and is now available in Russian and English ( ). The journal s Editorial Board includes well-known spine specialists. RASS members have defined the following priorities for improving the current level of spinal care: Unify surgeons from diverse specialities who dedicate more than 50% of professional activities to spinal care through the creation of common principles of treatment of spinal patients Create a spine institute / research centre with a fundamental sciences orientation / medical industrial park (already exists in Novosibirsk), for the investigation and implementation of a modern professional practice of surgical spinal care, elaborating standardised surgical protocols and algorithms for all types of spinal surgeries Establish specialised spine units to provide spinal surgical care based on regional distribution with qualified staff operated by the Federal Centre of the Ministry of Healthcare Introduce a spine education programme with training modules in coordination with EUROSPINE s European Spine Course Diploma Work in cooperation with CIS countries (Belarus, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Armenia) and international spine societies including EUROSPINE and AO Spine to develop a high standard of surgical spinal care in Russia and international P2P training of spine specialists. Under the import substitution programme in Russia, members of RASS are participating in a multicentre clinical study related to the clinical implementation of new materials (such as Nithinol or carbon nanostructural implants). Five multicentre studies are currently under the supervision of RASS, with RASS members (70% - orthopaedics, 30% neurosurgeons) working in federal centres and hospitals across the country. The most expensive and high tech operations financed by the Federal Budget can be performed in the association s main cities. RASS s social activities are determined through the provision of proper financing of the labour costs of its members and good working conditions. 9
