More information is an international network of research cooperation that coordinates develops and shares expertise in innovative high performance sport research at the meso-level (policy level) in cooperation with other policy makers, NOCs, international organisations, and researchers worldwide. 1. In general As a follow up to The Global Sporting Arms Race (De Bosscher et al., 2008) has set up an international project that compares the elite sport policies and climate among nations using a mixed quantitative and qualitative methodology, called -II. From January 2011 until beginning 2012, researchers from 16 nations 1 started with the data collection following a nine Pillar Model as a framework (De Bosscher et al. 2006) at two levels: (a) Overall Sport Policy inventory: an extensive semi-structured inventory on all the indicators (126 Critical success factors) of the nine pillars. (b) Elite sport climate survey: a structured survey with elite athletes, coaches and performance directors from national governing bodies in all countries. 2. Countries involved To date, 16 countries from four continents are participating in the project. Unfortunately no African country was able to find the necessary funds and engagement from policy makers. 9. Official -II financial 2011/ Happy New year 3. Progress to date In the overall sport policy inventory, data are collected via: interviews with policy makers; secondary sources; policy documents; and the internet. Currently most countries are in the final stage of this data collection phase. Researchers are validating the data with policy makers and different other sources. Most countries have started the surveys, some of which have pleasingly high response rates. Provisional timing Congratulations to Finland: the first nation that finished data collection! The timing as currently planned is detailed below. Changes may occur, depending on unexpected outcomes related to the characteristics of international comparative studies. Interesting to know The surveys have been translated in 12 Languages: English, Dutch, Danish, Estonian, Finnish, French, Portuguese (incl. Brazil), Spanish, Japanese, Italian, German, and Korean; 126 critical success factors (CSFs) are measured in nine pillars and the overall inventory totals 174 pages ; the three surveys amount to 58 pages of questions; The project is run with mainly freelance efforts from a joint group of researchers from different nations, and with only limited coordination funding. is still searching for additional coordination funding; interested can address to the secretary. We welcome the financial, who enable the coordination of the -II project for 2011/2012: Topsport Vlaanderen and the Ministry of Sport in Flanders (Belgium), the Ministry of VWS, NOC*NSF and Mulier Institute in the Netherlands and Ernst & Young Flanders; and the

3 universities from the group. Research from each nation cover the expenses of data collection domestically; sometimes with additional extra funding. Accordingly, all together the -II project generated app and six full time personnel from the different nations in 2011; 49 from different nations, including universities, research institutes and policy organisations are involved in -II; Apart from the so called -II projects, is also developing projects in specific sports.
