2 Message from the editor: Welcome to this up date of Special Olympics Manawatu. I want to extend a huge thank you to all people who have worked hard and done your part in helping to qualify athletes and coaches ready for the Regional games, National games and the Asia Pacific games. In this newsletter I am announcing the full Manawatu teams for the Special Olympics Summer National games to be held in Dunedin November 27-30th and the Asia Pacific games to be held in Newcastle Australia from November 28 to December 8th. Special Olympics Manawatu have been hosting a number of Regional events. To date we have hosted golf, athletics, indoor bowls, bocce and football regional events. In June we will be hosting power lifting, swimming, ten pin bowling and basketball. It is expected that we will have up to 30 lifters for power lifting, 140 swimmers, 80 bowlers and 100 basketball players. The athletes participating at these events enjoy the challenges of competitions and the social atmosphere and opportunities that are created. Many volunteers come along especially to help at events. Sporting organisations such as Manawatu Athletics and Masters Athletics, Harriers, Football Manawatu, PN golf club, Basketball Manawatu, Indoor Bowls Manawatu, Bowlerarma, Power Lifting NZ, Swim Manawatu and Masters swimming, and Bocce NZ, all contribute to the success of our events. Funding from a number of organisations help to reduce the cost to our athletes: COGS, Pub Charity, Southern Trust, The Southern Trust, Endeavour, NZCT, Infinity Foundation, Pelorus Trust, the Racing Board, Fundraising Chocolates, Lions Clubs and other sponsors. Special Olympics Manawatu have a good number of very dedicated and skilled coaches and team mangers. All of these people are volunteers and they work extremely hard to include every athlete in every training and every event. They do their best to get information to you. Attending practice and reading newsletters is one way you can help. Special Olympics Manawatu has a new website and we will do our best to keep it up dated: If we have your current address, we can send newsletters directly to you. Please your address to me if you currently do not get s from me. Congratulations to the people who have been selected for the Asia Pacific team: Rachel Oemcke, Lily Harper, Amanda Hendra, Jesse Williams and Tim Rieger will be swimming Tui Robinson, Keri-Anne Johnson and Rachel Kenny will be playing bocce, Shona Hendra is assistant Head of the New Zealand Team, Lyn Ryan is Head Bocce coach and Helen Johnson is a swim coach The Asia Pacific Games are in Newcastle, Australia, leaving 27 November. All team members have already started extra training and will attend a full NZ Team camp at Queen s Birthday weekend in Wellington.

6 HEALTHY ATHLETES: Special Olympics will be running a free healthy athletes programme: screening eyes, ears, teeth and feet. This is an excellent programme and It is pleasing to see all of our Manawatu athletes have registered to do this programme at the Nationals. Regardless of the excellent health care families and providers give our athletes, there are still many athletes who are identified as having some ongoing treatments as a result of the screening. Many athletes see their peers going through the programme at the Nationals and ask to do the programme there and then. It is makes a lot of sense to take up the opportunity while the athletes have it. They get lots of free goodies as well.
