National Geographic publishes magazines and maps. Geographers study the planet. They look at how parts of the earth have changed over time. Geographers also study how and where people live. Valdes leads a team that draws official borders on maps. They decide how places will be named. He helps look up information for the maps. He makes sure they are all correct. Early Work Valdes was born in Havana, Cuba. He came to Washington, D.C., in Valdes studied geography and cartography in college. Cartography is the art of map-making. 8 After mastering that, he says, he got into making and researching maps. This ended up being his favorite task. Valdes worked hard to become a leader in this job. Valdes has seen many changes in how maps are made. It is easier to get information now, he says. In the past, to learn about a place, people often had to fly to that place. Maps sometimes took a year to make. Now, maps take five weeks or less. What Is The Most Exciting Part Of Your Work? When you map the Earth every day, Valdes says, you notice how much it changes. It is not just governments and borders, he says. Mountains change heights, too. Fault lines the large cracks in the earth are always forming. What Is The Most Demanding Part Of Your Work? It is important to watch the news, he says. You can better understand how governments deal with the land around them. These things can seem like they are not changing. Then, the next day, changes might happen quickly. How Do You Define Geography? Valdes says geography helps us to understand the story of our lives. Where we live makes us who we are, he says. We might not notice it. Still, "the food you eat... or the type of car that you drive" is because of geography, he says. Starting The Day Valdes starts his day by checking the news. He looks for any changes in the world's geography. He checks his and phone to see if anyone from the government has new map information. Then, he starts to fix National Geographic's maps. In 2010, Valdes says, there were many map changes. Louisiana changed its state flag. The Queen Charlotte Islands in Canada were renamed Haida Gwaii. So, You Want To Be A Geographer It is important to know many subjects, Valdes says. This will make you better at geography. History, math, and the arts are "all interconnected," he says. Curling is a team sport that is played on ice. Players wear special shoes that grip the ice so they do not slip. They slide a stone toward a circular target.

Teams take turns sliding their stones made of heavy granite across the ice towards the target. Curling stones are generally about 40 pounds so they are not easy to slide!

12 Curling is a team sport that is played on ice. Players wear special shoes that grip the ice so they do not slip. They slide a stone toward a circular target. Four circles inside each other make up the target, with the goal being to get the stone closest to the center circle. Each team has 4 players. Teams take turns sliding their stones made of heavy granite across the ice towards the target. Curling stones are generally about 40 pounds so they are not easy to slide! Two players called sweepers follow the stone down the ice. They use brooms to sweep the ice in front of the stone, which causes Curling stones friction. This can slow down the stone to help them have more control over where it will stop. Every team has 8 stones to play and once all the stones are played, teams are awarded points for how close they are to the center of the target, which is often called the house. Whichever team has the most points is declared the winner. Curling was added to the Olympic games in 1998, with both men s teams and women s teams. 15 Name Lindsey Vonn When it comes to Olympic athletes, perhaps one of the most successful and determined ones is Lindsey Vonn. Lindsey Vonn is a professional skier, whose fame and achievements are the result of hard work and perseverance. She has earned two Olympic medals and seven World Championship medals for her incredible skiing skills. Lindsey Kildow was born on October 18, 1984 in Saint Paul, Minnesota. Vonn stepped on her first pair of skis at the young age of two. Her father was also a skier when he was a teenager, and he pushed Lindsey to practice and work hard on the slopes. She continued to do so for fun, and then went on to join a skiing club for young children. In 2000, when Lindsey was only 16 years old, she made her World Cup debut. In 2002, Lindsey was eligible to participate in the Winter Olympics! She raced in the slalom event, a type of alpine skiing that involves skiing between poles. She also raced in the combined competition, and earned sixth place. After the Olympics, Lindsey spent the next few years participating in World Championships and the World Cup, placing and winning medals in almost every competition. In 2006, Lindsey suffered a major setback while practicing for her next Winter Olympics. She had a terrible crash during a practice run on the slopes. Lindsey spent the night in the hospital. Despite a bruised hip and pains, she returned to the slopes to compete two days later. She finished in eighth place. This surprising and remarkable comeback earned her the U.S. Olympic Spirit Award. In 2010, Lindsey won her first two medals at the Winter Olympics in Vancouver, Canada, one of which was gold! Lindsey Vonn has suffered a number of disastrous injuries including broken fingers, concussions, torn knee ligaments, a broken arm, fractures, and more. While most may think these would have caused her to stop skiing, Lindsey Vonn always got back up on the slopes to continue to do what she loved. Her perseverance and determination to keep skiing make her an incredible role model for athletes all over the world. I m never tired of winning, and I m never tired of skiing. Lindsey Vonn
