1 Dear Coaches: YOUTH SPORTS JUMP ROPE FX VIRGINIA OPEN AAU QUALIFIER TOURNAMENT Saturday June 2, 2018 Stuart Beville Middle School 4901 Dale Blvd, Woodbridge, VA Doors open at 7:30 a.m. / Competition begins at 9:00 a.m. Enclosed are all the forms and information you will need to participate in the June 2, 2018 Virginia Open AAU Qualifier Tournament to be hosted by the Youth Sports Jump Rope FX at Stuart Beville Middle School 4901 Dale Blvd, Woodbridge, VA Any US or Non-US athlete may compete in this event for practice, for fun, or to attempt to qualify through this event for the 2018 AAU Junior Olympic Games to be held July 25-29, 2018 in Des Moines, Iowa. Registration fee for the Qualifier is $40 per competitor. Please submit one team check (payable to Youth Sports ) for all participating jumpers and return it along with the completed Registration/Waiver forms (one for each participant -- must have AAU membership #), and officials sign-up sheet to be received by no later than May 5, Late team entries will be charged an additional $10 fee and will only be accepted on a space available basis. All coaches, jumpers and judges must be registered 2018 members of AAU prior to competition day in order to participate in this Qualifier. You may sign up online at Adults need to allow sufficient time for the background check to be completed. Registration Procedures Please note that the team registration form is electronic and must be completed on an AAU provided Excel spreadsheet. This sheet integrates with the tournament database. Judges registration is included with the electronic registration. The Excel spreadsheet will be sent upon request. NOTE: If you need to make changes to your team registration after it s been sent to the addresses listed at the end of this memo, it is recommended that you make the change(s) in the spreadsheet and resend it. Tournament Rules The competition will be administered according to the AAU Jump Rope Rules. All coaches need a copy of and should familiarize themselves with the 2018 AAU Jump Rope Handbook which can be obtained by visiting the AAU website listed above and clicking on Jump Rope. Attached for quick reference is a list of 2018 rule changes. Entry Information Teams are allowed just one entry each for Junior Group Routine (ages 14 & under) and Senior Group Routine (ages 15-22). AAU membership cards and proof of age must be available upon request. Age is determined by the competitor s age on June 15, Coaches must complete the electronic team registration form for each team or unattached individual. Wild card applications will not be accepted. Music Music is mandatory for Individual Rope Singles and Pairs events, Double Dutch events, 4 Person Freestyle events and for Group Routines. Routine music MUST be presented on an MP3 player. The athlete s music must be in its own playlist with only one song in it. The playlist s name must include the athlete s name and event. To set up your MP3 player, make a playlist for each athlete and their events, then add their song to that playlist. Make sure that only one song is in the playlist. It is also imperative that the MP3 player has the team s name clearly imprinted on the outside of the player. The MP3 player must be cued to the correct playlist and song with the volume set to maximum. The music technician must be able to simply press play at the appropriate time. The MP3 player s security settings must allow ample time before going into screen lock mode.

2 Event/Qualifying Information The top 10 U.S. athletes overall (freestyle, power and speed combined scores) in each event/age group will advance to the AAU Junior Olympic Games. The top 10 non-u.s. athletes overall (freestyle, power and speed combined scores) in each event/age group will also advance. The top 10 U.S. athletes in the 4 Person Freestyle event in each age group (14-under and 15-22) will advance to the AAU Junior Olympic Games. The top 10 non-u.s. athletes in this event will also advance. The top 3 places (U.S. and non-u.s.) in each age group (Junior = 14 & under/ senior = 15-22) for Group Routine will qualify to advance to the Olympic Games. Teams may enter one group per age division. The Group Routine must consist of at least 8 and not more than 24 jumpers with all jumpers using individual ropes (props other than ropes may not be used). Routines must be choreographed to music and be within 2-4 minutes in length. Each coach who has qualifiers for the AAU Junior Olympic Games who plan to compete MUST register the team on-line at The handbook and hotel information will also be posted online. In the event that a qualified participant cannot go to the AAU Junior Olympic Games, the next finisher will be offered the opportunity to go. Therefore, it is imperative that coaches notify the Tournament Director before the tournament if any of their competitors have already qualified elsewhere, and as soon after the tournament as possible if any of their qualifiers do not intend to go to Detroit so that a slot may be offered to the next qualifier. Awards Ribbons will be presented to the 1st-6 th place winners in each individual event in each age division. Gold, silver and bronze medals will be presented to the 1 st, 2 nd, and 3 rd place (respectively) overall winners and ribbons will be presented to the 4 th, 5 th and 6 th place overall winners in each age division. Certificates and ribbons will be presented to the top 3 Group Team Routines in each age division. Judges/Check-In Clerks/Tabulators Make sure you complete the judges section on the Excel registration spreadsheet. This will help us prepare in advance for the tournament and ensure that we have enough judges for each event. Each team must provide a minimum number of 1 currently certified judge for every 4 competitors in both speed and freestyle and teams with 5 or more registered athletes must provide a minimum of (1) Level 1 Judge and (1) Level 2 Judge. NOTE: individuals who are only able to judge either speed or freestyle, but not both, are considered as a half-judge towards a team s judging requirements. Extra judges to provide for alternates and additional speed stations would be most helpful. Exemptions will be handled on a case by case basis by the tournament director. Again, please note that all judges need to be members of AAU. They must wear plain white shirts, AAU or white USAJR shirts (no team logos) and navy shorts, slacks or skirt (denim jeans may not be worn) as well as non-floor marking athletic shoes at the Qualifier Tournament. Minimum age for judges at the qualifier tournament is 16. If they are also a competitor, they may not judge in any All-Around or Group Routine in which they are competing. We also need parents to serve as check-in clerks and tabulators. A special complimentary lunch will be provided for the judges/check-in clerks/tabulators so do not include them on your lunch pre-order form. Schedule of Events The doors to Stuart Beville Middle School will open at 7:30 a.m. on June 2, there will be a judges/volunteers/coaches meeting at 8:30 a.m., and the tournament will begin promptly at 9:00 a.m. An exact schedule of events will be sent prior to the tournament. The amount of time the tournament will take depends on the number of teams and competitors involved as well as the number of judges we have. We will make every effort to move the tournament along as quickly as possible. Scratches If you have scratches on tournament day, it is IMPERATIVE that head coaches get that information to our computer technician as soon as they arrive. The HEAD COACH ONLY will be permitted in the computer area.

3 Concessions VYSBC Booster club concessions will be for sale the day of the tournament will include: bakery, fruit, pizza, chips, candy, water, pop, Gatorade, and coffee. Officials sign-up sheet NOTICE! This event is licensed by the Amateur Athletic Union of the U.S., Inc. All participants must have a current AAU membership. AAU membership may not be included as part of the entry fee to the event. AAU Youth Athlete membership must be obtained before the competition begins, except where the event operator has a laptop available with an internet connection. Be Prepared: Adult and Non-Athlete memberships are no longer instant and cannot be applied for at an event. Due to background screenings, please allow up to 10 days for adult memberships to be processed. Participants are encouraged to visit the AAU website to obtain their membership.

4 AAU 2018 RULE CHANGES 1. The requirement that jumpers must start outside of the ropes in Double Dutch has been eliminated. 2. The Double Dutch Pentathlon has been eliminated and is replaced by separate Double Dutch Triple Crowns for both Double Dutch Single groups and Double Dutch Pairs groups. a. Single Double Dutch Triple Crown is for 3-person Double Dutch Groups. The same 3-person Double Dutch group competes in each component event. Events will be 1 min. speed, 1 min. power, and freestyle b. Pairs Double Dutch Triple Crown is for 4-person Double Dutch Groups. The same 4-person group competes in each component event. Events will be 4x30 speed relay, 2x30 power, and freestyle 3. Group Routines: a. The age group for Junior Group Routine is now 14-Under and the age group for Senior Group Routine is now b. Minimum number of participants in a group routine event is now 8 jumpers. 4. Triple Unders in Individual Events: a. Triple Unders has been removed as the power component event in the Individual Triple Crown for athletes 15 and over. The power component in the Individual Triple Crown will now be 1-minute Double Unders for all age groups. b. One-minute Triple Unders is being added as a separate event for athletes in the 15 and older age groups. This event is not part of a Triple Crown. 5. Age Group change for individual events for and athletes to: 15-16; 17-18; This change is for both male and female individual events only. 6. The 10-Under age group for Double Dutch was eliminated and 12-Under is now the youngest age group for Double Dutch events. 10-under will stay an age group for Pairs events. 7. Rope on floor in freestyle change rule to match USAJR rule, that it affects content judging 8. New Event 4 Person Freestyle Event a. Age Groups for this event will be 14-under and b. Those placing in the top 10 at a qualifying tournament will qualify to compete this event at the AAU Junior Olympic Games c. Length of routine is same as single rope freestyle events, max. of 1 min 15 sec., choreographed to music d. Routines will be judged using current single rope freestyle judging 9. Speed Judging Accuracy: At least two of the three speed judge scores must be within 3 clicks or the jumper(s) will be allowed a re-jump. This is change from requiring two judges to be within 5 clicks.

The Coach is responsible for seeing that team members, coaches, parents, representative judges and any other persons affiliated with their team conduct themselves accordingly. Ungentlemanly or unladylike conduct includes, but is not limited to: the use of obscene or profane language and gestures at the competition venue, or the doing of any act which tends to disrupt or obstruct a competition, or bring this Union or amateur athletics into disrepute. Severe cases of poor sportsmanship or conduct will result in disqualification. Any questions concerning the rules or procedures for the tournament will be handled exclusively by the designated coach of the team and must be directed to the Tournament Committee. Any interpretation of the tournament rules or any decision involving any aspect of the tournament will be rendered by the Tournament Committee. The Tournament Committee will render a judgment in an effort to insure that the tournament proceeds in a manner consistent with the general spirit and goals of the AAU. By participating in this tournament, each competitor and team representative agrees that the decisions made by the Tournament Committee will be final and will not be subject to review. Each competitor acknowledges the necessity for the judges to make prompt and fair decisions in this competition. Other than the process outlined in the 2016 Jump Rope Handbook, each competitor and coach waives any legal, equitable, administrative or procedural review of such decisions. Any competitor or team representative that does not adhere to the terms and procedures above may be disqualified from the tournament and automatically forfeits the right to any awards presented by the tournament. In addition, the competitor or team representative may also forfeit the opportunity to participate in any qualifying tournament and the AAU Junior Olympic Games tournament the following year. 7 2018 AAU JUMP ROPE TOURNAMENT OFFICIALS SIGN-UP SHEET Coaches: You are required to nominate a minimum number of Level 1 and Level 2 trained judges based the number of competitors participating in the tournament as indicated in the 2018 AAU Jump Rope Handbook, typically, 1 judge for every 4 competitors. Judges that are only able to judge either speed or freestyle, but not both, are considered as a half-judge towards a team s judging requirement. Additional judges and volunteers are always welcome and needed to provide for alternates, additional speed stations, and help in other areas. Officials must wear white shirts, navy shorts or slacks (no denim jeans or team logos) and athletic shoes. Judges may wear shirts from previous AAU JO Games, white USAJR Judge Shirt, or a plain white collared shirt.
