From 2013, no new cases of silicosis amongst previously unexposed individuals. Elimination of Noise Induced Hearing Loss (NIHL) By December 2008 hearing loss less than 10% amongst occupationally exposed individuals. From 2013 total noise emitted by all equipment in any workplace < 110dB(A).

In the Platinum, Coal and Other Sectors: By 2013, achieve constant and continuous improvement equivalent to at least current international benchmarks. To achieve international benchmarks, an annual reduction milestone of 20% was agreed to by stakeholders. we

18 CHALLENGES Some mines are still investigating whether to fully install the personnel vehicle detection devices more than four years after introduction into the sector. Repetitive transgressions and accidents. There is still inadequate/ineffective management of contractors as some are not adhering to safety rules. It is still a trend that contractors are neglected with regards to submission of occupational diseases and possible compensation. Non and late reporting of accidents is still a major challenge. Large mining companies with well controlled TB/HIV/AIDS programmes on site saw a decrease in TB rates due to direct observed treatment. Unfortunately they are in the minority and this trend is not seen on the other mines.
19 Way Forward There must be more emphasis on the following tripartite initiatives: Implementation of Culture Transformation Framework. Drive compliance and reporting. Training of OHS Reps and Shop Stewards. Taking on learners for experiential training and ultimately employment of learners. Implementation of Research outcomes from MHSC. Occupational Health matters. The amendment of the Mine Health and Safety Act is currently being finalized.

22 CONCLUSION Zero Harm is possible in the South African Mining Industry. It is only through the continued collaboration of all stakeholders, working towards a common goal, that Zero Harm can be achieved in the mining sector. Lets achieve ZERO HARM and show that we really care!!!!
