7 1. Scientific Recognition (iii) ERC praised Dr Marcelo Bertalmío (StG): The ERC Grant really changed my life. I can hire my own team and also involve PhD students. We now have the resources to buy equipment, go to other research centres to establish collaborations and organise and attend conferences and events Prof. Walter Salzburger (StG): "ERC grants allow you to establish your own line of research in a very independent way. ( ) they are seen as a gold standard of excellence by European universities and will give you the freedom to concentrate on your actual research, without many other obligations." Dr. Effie Fokas (StG): "The ERC has given me a fantastic opportunity and I am a great supporter of their long-term funding, which allows for really in-depth research. Many funding agencies provide grants for two to three years, which is not always enough for large-scale projects on important issues." Dr Grazyna Ewa Ptak (StG): "The ERC Starting grant was a great opportunity to become an independent researcher. It is very prestigious in the scientific community. ( ) As a woman working in Italy, I have to say it was crucial" Prof. Malcolm Bennett (AdG): Funding from the European Research Council, the Wolfson Foundation and the University of Nottingham has enabled us to establish a unique root imaging platform, the Hounsfield Facility. ( )This multidisciplinary environment has really opened us up to different influences it s a fantastic mixing pot. ( ) There are 20 of us in the ERC research team with six PhD students co-funded by the ERC and the university. 7
