It is now over four weeks since I joined the WSF so it is now time to give you the low-down in my first Instant Update. What I have found, from top to bottom, is immense commitment and a strong will to go forward; even more pronounced than I felt as an outsider looking in from WISPA. It starts at the very top where President Ramachandran has provided time and real energy. It was clear that without his personal support last year an Olympic bid would not have been mounted; and he has continued to work tirelessly in the Olympic arena which is absolutely vital for our continuing hopes of an Olympic place. He is also at the sharp end of initiatives that will help squash visibility and vitality going forward. In this he is ably assisted by the office bearers who give time to WSF unstintingly. Commitment and efficiency are also bywords for the WSF office managed by Lorraine so well supported by Jasmine. But don t expect this to continue...i will drag them down to my level in due course! I firmly believe with our partners, federations, members, players and stakeholders we are going to move forward strongly in the coming months and years. That s the preface that I wanted to begin with. It leads me into the main topic, which is to report on the August ManCom meeting. For those that are not familiar, ManCom is short for Management Committee the officers. They were all present when we met in Germany two weeks ago, and without going into full details, I am certain that the fruits of the meeting will be well received. The strategic plan which will be fully discussed at the AGM was finalised, media and event planning, including new initiatives are underway, and so much more. Updated information will reach everybody on an ongoing basis. For now, I look forward to communicating with and seeing many of you at the AGM and on other occasions. WSF MEMBER GUIDELINE (Issued Aug 2010) PLAYING RULES Playing rules are continually reviewed by the WSF Rules Committee, with a view to periodically publishing changes in an orderly manner.

2 However, should members receive requests for clarifications where there is uncertainty here is the position in a few areas: TIN HEIGHT The regular tin height is as it has always been i.e. 19 inches / 48cm. Only the PSA Men s Tour, World Men s Team Championship and some other high level men s events and international doubles events that use a lower tin (17 / 43cm) SCORING There are two forms of scoring, both of which are in accordance with the Rules of the Game. Higher level competitive events such as PSA / WISPA Tours, all WSF Championships and Regional Games etc now use Point-A-Rally to 11 points, but while this is also an option for recreational level players there is no WSF intention that this become the standard for all levels of play in all age groups. Hand in / hand out to nine would tend to lead to longer matches for recreational players, so since this may be considered more satisfying as mentioned, it is the choice of the players, club, league or national federation to decide what scoring is to be used locally. Similarly Point-A-Rally to 15 may be adopted at local choice. LET RESTRICTION The Rules of squash do not offer flexibility that allows the number of lets in a game to have a fixed maximum or be disallowed altogether. However, controlled authorised experimentation on any Rules with results is welcomed by the WSF Rules Committee. COMMONWEALTH GAMES Second only to the Olympic Games in scale, the Commonwealth Games features over seventy nations in Delhi in October and squash will be there. Current and recent world number ones will lead strong fields as we showcase our sport at a new venue featuring eleven ASB courts including an all glass show court that will expand for doubles use. A great gala and hopefully with the squash being witnessed by many important guests. Head of the IOC Jacques Rogge is certainly scheduled to attend during the singles. World Championships Dates 2011 World Junior Men s Individual Championship This championship, to be contested in Herentals, Belgium, has moved slightly earlier in July i.e July, so that the World Junior Women s Individual & Team Championship in Egypt can take place immediately afterwards as Ramadan straddles August next year. World Junior Women s Individual & Team Championships These events will be held in Cairo, Egypt July under the auspices of the Egyptian Squash Federation. World Men s Team Championship The 23 rd staging of this event will take place in Paderborn, Germany, August. This is the second world championship for Ahorn-Sportpark, which hosted the World Junior Men s in Squash at the Pan Pacific Masters Games Squash will be one of the 34 sports on offer at the 7 th Pan Pacific Masters Games to be held on the Gold Coast in Australia from 6 to 14 November this year. The organisers are expecting more than 10,000 people from all over the 30 countries to converge on the Gold Coast to participate. There are seven age-based divisions for the events at the Labrador Squash Centre. All sports are located in close proximity to the Games Village at the Gold Coast Convention & Exhibition Centre in Broadbeach. Entries for the Pan Pacific Masters Games can be made at

The second seeds claimed the early advantage when, in a rematch of the women's individual final, the highlyfancied Annie Au defeated GB's Emma Chorley again in straight games. It was the men's individual champion Joel Hinds who levelled the tie for Great Britain. The 23-year-old Birmingham University graduate, fought back from 2/1 down to beat Annie Au's younger brother Leo Au 11-7, 10-12, 5-11, 11-5, In the dramatic decider, Welshman Peter Creed - from the University of Wales in Cardiff - sealed victory for Great Britain after beating Hong Kong's Chiu Ho Fai 11-5, 11-1, The 2/1 win marked Great Britain's third title triumph in the event after beating France in the finals of both the inaugural championship in 1996 and the 2006 championship in Hungary. The British camp occupied three of the six podium spots on offer - with top seed Hinds, a student at Birmingham University in England making his third appearance in the biennial event, the team's star after his 11-6, 11-7, 11-2 triumph after a fiery yet dominant performance over Germany's second seed Jens Schoor. Annie Au, a student at Hong Kong Polytechnic University who is ranked 16 in the professional WISPA world rankings, put paid to a British double at Monash after beating Emma Chorley 11-8, 11-5, Khalifa Crowned World Junior Champion in Quito Amr Khaled Khalifa outlasted fellow countryman Ali Farag in the final of the Men's World Junior Squash Championship on an all-glass court at El Condado Shopping Mall in the Ecuador capital Quito to become the third successive Egyptian winner of the World Squash Federation event in its 17th year. Khalifa extends Egypt's grip on the title to six years after Ramy Ashour, the current world No2, won the trophy in 2004 and 2006, and Mohamed El Shorbagy, now ranked 13, in 2008 and And the country secured a clean sweep of the 2010 medals when Marwan El Shorbagy beat Pakistan's Farhan Zaman, also a 9/16 seed, 15-17, 11-6, 12-10, in the bronze medal play-off. Egypt Reclaim World Junior Team Title in Quito In a dramatic climax to the 2010 Men's World Junior Team Squash Championship in the Ecuador capital Quito, top seeds Egypt beat defending champions Pakistan 2/1 to win the World Squash Federation title for the third time since New world individual champion Amr Khaled Khalifa put the favourites into a commanding position in the tie after beating Pakistan number one Danish Atlas Khan 11-3, 11-9, 11-3 in a victory which marked his tenth successive win in the twoweek-long championships.

4 But second seeds Pakistan charged back into contention when Nasir Iqbal ended Ali Farag's unbeaten run in the team event by overcoming the individual championship runner-up 11-8, 6-11, 11-7, 2-11, 11-8 in a 65-minute encounter to level the tie. But it took a further nail-biting 50 minutes before the destination of the title was resolved - when 17-year-old Marwan El Shorbagy repeated his individual championship bronze medal win over Farhan Zaman to beat the 18- year-old Pakistani 11-5, 4-11, 11-9, It was a glorious conclusion to the championships for Egypt - who not only claimed all the medals in the individual championship, but now hold all four main world team titles, the men's and women's senior and junior crowns. WORLD MASTERS Australian Davenport Wins Record Fourth World Masters Title in Cologne Australian Geoffrey Davenport claimed a record-equalling fourth title in the 2010 World Masters Squash Championships, the 10th staging of the World Squash Federation event in Cologne, Germany. The 52-year-old favourite and defending champion defeated Scotland's No3 seed Alan Thomson 11-9, 11-3, 11-8 in the final of the Men's Over-50 event. Davenport won the Over- 45 World Masters title in 2003 and It was legendary fellow Australian Heather McKay who became the first winner of four World Masters titles in A second crown also goes to Australia after former World Open champion Vicki Cardwell, the top seed; beat second-seeded Scot Pauline Douglas 11-5, 11-7, 11-3 in the Women's Over-55 final. England claimed six titles: Averil Murphy successfully defended her title in the Women's Over-60 event, beating Australia's No2 seed Marilyn Kennedy 11-9, 8-11, 6-11, 11-5, 11-4 in the final. Top seed Mark Cowley, the Over-55 British Open champion, defeated fellow Englishman Peter Alexander 12-10, 11-8, in the Men's Over-55 final. In another all-english final, third seed Keith Jones beat outsider Peter Leary, a 9/16 seed, 11-4, 11-9, 11-9 in the Men's Over-60 final. Chris Ansell, also a British Open champion in the category, battled to an 11-4, 16-18, 8-11, 11-8, 11-2 win over fourth-seeded South African Antony Michael Martin to take the Men's Over-65 final. The 'oldest' title also went to England after top seed Malcolm Gilham overcame unseeded fellow countryman Raymond Rook 11-6, 11-2, 11-7 in the final of the Men's Over-75 championship. And 54-year-old Julie Field successfully defended her Women's Over-50 title, beating second-seeded South African Lisa O'Grady 11-13, 11-4, 11-9, 11-4 in the final. There was popular home success in two women's events: Favourite Sabine Schoene, a former world No6 from Munich, defeated Karen Meakins, from Barbados, 11-7, 11-8, 11-7 in the Women's Over-35 final - and fourth seed Simone Korell produced a surprise German win after beating New Zealand's third seed Judith Casbolt 11-9, 11-2, 11-7 in the Women's Over-40 event final. The biggest shock in Cologne came in the Women's Over-45 event where unseeded South African Leora Greenwood battled through to the final where the 47-year-old beat Dutch opponent Bea de Dreu-Spitse 11-9, 11-3, 11-1 to take the title. There was further unexpected South African success in the Women's Over-65 event when second seed Sheena Worwood beat England's Norma Fulling 9-11, 11-5, 11-8, 11-7 in the final. There was New Zealand success in the Men's Over-45 event where second seed Gary Duberly, winner of the Men's Over-40 title two years ago, beat England's Peter Gunter 11-4, 6-11, 11-4, 11-9 in a surprise final. In the Men's Over-70 final, Welshman Brian Phillips beat New Zealand's defending champion Barry Gardiner 12-10, 11-2, 11-9 to win his first World title. Ireland celebrated a pair of surprise titles: Third seed Barbara Sanderson celebrated her recent 70th birthday by upsetting top seed Averil Heath 8-11, 11-7, 11-5, 11-8 in the Women's Over-70 final. And popular Irishman Derek Ryan, a fourth seed, secured his first World Masters title in the Men's Over-40 event after beating third-seeded Dutchman Lucas Buit 11-5, 11-3, 11-5 in the final. Finally Frenchman Renan Lavigne celebrated his maiden appearance in the championships by winning the Men's Over-35 title, defeating Dutchman Stephen Cooke 11-2, 11-3, 11-5 in the final. Mexico Win Five Gold Medals in Central America & Caribbean Games After claiming the women's individual squash title, Samantha Teran went on to win two further gold medals to take Mexico's haul to five gold medals in the sport's third appearance in the Central America & Caribbean Games at Club Colsubsidio la Colina in the Colombian capital Bogota. Teran, the world No12 from Mexico City, partnered men's individual bronze medallist Eric Galvez to a straight games win over Trinidad & Tobago pairing Colin Ramasra and Kerry Sample to win the Mixed Doubles gold medal. In the team event that brought the two-week event to a close, Teran then led compatriots Graciela Lopez Perez and Ivonne Diaz to a 2/1 Mexico win over Colombia in a repeat of the 2006 final.

5 In the men's team final - also a Mexico / Colombia clash for the second time in four years - Galvez went down in five games to men's individual gold medallist Miguel Angel Rodriguez. But team-mates Cesar Salazar and Jorge Isaac Baltazar Ferreira clawed back the advantage to help Mexico retain the title. Baltazar Ferreira teamed up with Arturo's twin brother Cesar Salazar in the Men's Doubles - and won Mexico's fifth gold medal after a marathon 11-7, 8-11, 11-4 victory in 121 minutes over Colombia in the final. Colombia, however, claimed Women's Doubles gold after Silvia Angulo Rugeles and Catalina Pelaez beat Guyana's Nicolette Fernandes and Ashley Khalil 11-9, 11-7 in the final. BLEEDING NOTE A reminder to players and officials: If an athlete is bleeding and needs attention, then the individual attending to the athlete should wear gloves and make sure he/she washes his/her hands. Similarly, if there has been any contact with the opponent, the area of contact needs to be washed with soap and water. The court should be cleaned of any blood. INTEGRATED 3 REFEREE HAND-HELDS ON THE WAY According to a press release issued by the company: The next revolution for professional squash is just around the corner TopSquash referee pro, a fully integrated referee console which brings technology to referee decision making and audience presentation is being launched by ASB. The use of cutting edge technology ensures a smoothly run of a game and precise real- time information on referee decisions for spectators via screens. The three match referees carry an ipod touch, used as a referee controller, that allows free movement around the court and deals automatically with decision making from stroke / let to not ups and out. The outcome of decisions is clear and seen on the score screen. Discussions with the referees will be solved before they arise. The system is so easy to use and so integrated that it is sure to become a future necessity in professional games. The launch date will be later this year. Meanwhile, PSA are also currently testing a system so there will shortly be two options on offer.
