1 The Journey Continues The basic purposes of our world services are communication, coordination, information, and guidance. We provide these services so that our groups and members can more successfully carry the message of recovery and so that our program of recovery can be made more available to addicts everywhere. Although all parts of our service structure affect and are affected by NA as a whole, only at this level do we find service bodies designed to deal with problems that involve our entire fellowship. 5 The Journey Continues A Note from Your World Board As we do each year, we would like to begin this report by expressing how grateful we are to have the chance to serve the Narcotics Anonymous Fellowship. This report is our yearly check-in, giving us the opportunity to review what we have accomplished over the past year and to look ahead to what s on the horizon. Early in the fiscal year, we had just completed the 2012 World Service Conference and were getting started on the work of the new conference cycle. In addition to looking to the work ahead, we welcomed six new members to the Board, which has not happened in many years. Our work included the continuation of the Service System Project, as well as getting started on a Traditions Book Project. The focus of the Service System Project for this cycle has involved conducting field tests of various local aspects of the ideas contained in the project s proposals. For the Traditions Book Project, the first cycle has been dedicated to gathering input and ideas about what the NA Fellowship would like to see this new piece of literature become. The theme for this year s annual report comes from WCNA 35, The Journey Continues. At our 60th anniversary Diamond Jubilee in Philadelphia, our Fellowship celebrated six decades of carrying a message of hope of freedom from active addiction and the promise of a new way to live. From our humble beginnings in Southern California in 1953 to the more than 61,000 weekly meetings taking place around the world, the Narcotics Anonymous program has been on an amazing journey. There are still many more addicts around the world to reach as we work together to achieve our vision; as we move forward together toward those shared goals, our journey continues. When it comes to funding, we are not like many other international businesses and nonprofit organizations. We do not have the ability or the desire to cut many of the levels of service we provide, nor can we look for support from outside of the Fellowship. As we report each year, we continue to supply translations and free or 1

6 NA World Services, Inc. Annual Report 2013 subsidized literature to new and struggling NA communities that would not otherwise have access to our printed message. We also continue to make literature available free of charge to incarcerated addicts upon request. Our distribution of free or subsidized literature over past years can be seen in the table included here. Free and Subsidized Literature with Trends Providing literature to communities that need it most is essential to the ongoing health of NA as a whole and is an integral part of fulfilling our vision. Narcotics Anonymous is a worldwide fellowship, and the primary purpose of the groups we serve is a mission close to all of our hearts. The need in this area of expense continues to grow, but we have been able to minimize the cost increases of meeting such demand through local and in-house literature production, the opening of a branch in India, and other efforts to contain costs. The high point in the fiscal year is an anomaly due to the fact that we gave away all remaining copies of the Fifth Edition Basic Text for use in H&I settings once the Sixth Edition was published. It should be noted, however, that this is an expense that has almost doubled since Gratitude continues to drive the efforts of NA World Services and of each of us as trusted servants on your World Board. This annual report is meant to offer a glimpse into the meaningful work we are able to achieve thanks to the NA Fellowship. Everything we do at NA World Services helps us to further the primary purpose of the NA groups, moving us further toward a future in which every addict has an opportunity to experience our message in his or her own language and culture. We thank you for your continued support, and we encourage you to read this report as an account of our shared challenges and successes. 2
