21 Coaches Coaches are some of the most important people in our program We currently have 168 coaches across the state of Vermont We sent a delegation of 50, athletes and coaches to the 2014 USA Games in Princeton, NJ. 25 Healthy Athletes Program The Healthy Athletes Program is dedicated to providing health services and education to Special Olympics athletes, and changing the way health systems interact with people with intellectual disabilities. Through free one-day screenings, athletes are able to be screened for medical conditions while simultaneously, licensed professionals, students and volunteers learn first-hand how to care for individuals with intellectual disabilities. Areas of screening include: o Fun Fitness Physical Therapy o Special Smiles Dentistry o Healthy Hearing Audiology o Health Promotion o Offers health information and advice in the areas of nutrition, sun safety, bone density, tobacco cessation and physical fitness (Not yet offered in Vermont) o Opening Eyes Optometry o MedFest Athlete Physicals o Fitfeet Podiatry 25 / Special Olympics Vermont
26 Young Athletes Program The Young Athletes Program or YAP engages children (ages 2-7) with intellectual disabilities through developmentally appropriate play activities. YAPs focus on social, cognitive, and physical development and serve as a feeder program for Special Olympics Unified and Local programs. 26 / Special Olympics Vermont

28 Athlete Leadership Program The Athlete Leadership Program or ALPs, provides training and support for athletes who desire to expand their participation in Special Olympics both on and off the competition field. Through ALPs, athletes receive training and have opportunities to hold positions of leadership and influence. 30 Penguin Plunge The Penguin Plunge is an annual wintertime fundraising and awareness event. Special Olympics enthusiasts of all ages fundraise to jump into Vermont s icy lakes, demonstrating that they have 32 degrees of courage. Each year, this event series raises a significant portion of SOVT's operating budget which allows us to provide high quality sports training and competition in 12 Olympic-type sports for nearly 1,000 athletes around the state. 31 LETR An International Partnership The Law Enforcement Torch Run (LETR) for Special Olympics is the largest grass-roots fundraiser and public awareness vehicle for Special Olympics world-wide. Since its inception in 1981, the LETR has grown extensively with more than 142,000 volunteers spanning 48 countries, and raising more than $414 million for the Special Olympics movement. 31 / Special Olympics Program Name
32 LETR in Vermont Activities are managed in partnership with the State LETR Executive Council and SOVT staff. The state is divided into 5 regions, each guided by a Chief or Sheriff Regional Director and supported by representatives from several departments within the jurisdiction. 40 Volunteers and Training Vermont Adaptive has over 400 volunteers statewide. Our professionally trained volunteers teach all of the adaptive sports lessons. Volunteers receive benefits in the form of recreational opportunities and training throughout the year. Vermont Adaptive hosts in house trainings as well as brings in professional associations such as the Professional Ski Instructors of America, American Canoe Association, and Wilderness Medical Institute.
41 Recreation For All - Outreach One of our main goals is to spread awareness and promote inclusive recreation within the educational system. We have a lot to offer on the various topics of DIVERSITY, EQUALITY, PHYSICAL FITNESS, INCLUSION, and even dispelling stereotypes. Our highly trained staff works with students in classrooms to promote disability awareness and inclusion, as well as to work with physical educators and their classes to provide adaptive sports instruction and equipment demonstration for youth. Our volunteer and athlete base includes children and adults, so we are able to teach and present to a variety of ages in many different settings, whether it s an elementary school classroom, a high school physical education class or at conferences and events. We reach out constantly and consistently to as many groups and educational institutions as possible in an effort for people to see how they can do everyday activities including sports and recreation together and on an equal level. Vermont Adaptive staff is available to present our disability awareness program at any school (in the classroom, special assembly or in-service), higher educational learning institution, conference, or workshop. We also can offer a Paralympic Sport School Day.
