The Niners then returned to the conference in for all sports except football, which will make the jump to C-USA in 2015 in its third season as an intercollegiate sport. 9 Senior Hillary Sigmon became the 20th member of the school s 1,000-point club when she hit the milestone exactly with 17 points in the Jan. 22 game against UAB. Sigmon drained a field goal with her toes just inside her trademark 3-point arc with just over 17 seconds remaining to join the elite group in program history. She is the first player to play exclusively for head coach Cara Consuegra to reach the mark. 9 Sigmon is the second 49ers player to reach the plateau with Consuegra as head coach. Jennifer Hailey, who completed her career in as the Atlantic 10 Player of the Year, was a member of Consuegra s first two squads (as a junior and senior) and ended with 1,453 points to place seventh in program history. 9 Sigmon joined the 100-start club as its eighth member when she was on the floor for the opening tip against Old Dominion Feb. 7. She is the first Niners player to reach the milestone under Consuegra and the first since Aysha Jones accomplished the feat in Senior Ayanna Holmes netted a career-high 18 points Feb. 7 against Old Dominion. She has a positive assist-to-turnover ratio in 22 of the 24 games in which she has played this season. 9 Three 49ers recorded 20 or more points in the Feb. 21 victory at Southern Miss, marking only the fourth time in program history the feat has been accomplished and first since 34 years to the day -- Feb. 21, 1981, at Mars Hill. The trio included Lefty Webster (24 points), Hillary Sigmon (23) and Kira Gordon (21). 9 Holmes added her first career double-double at Southern Miss, in a non-traditional fashion, with 10 rebounds and 10 assists, both career highs. She did not score, finishing 0-of-3 from the field and 0-of-1 at the free throw line. 9 Charlotte is one of 12 programs nationally to make the postseason in each of the last 12 years. 9 The 49ers have signed four players to National Letters of Intent for the season. More information on the class can be found on page 5 of these notes. 7 South Carolina becomes milestone game for two Two different members of the Charlotte women s basketball program reached a game milestone when the 49ers played at No. 1/2 South Carolina Dec. 4. Cara Consuegra was on the sidelines for her 100th contest as the Niners head coach, posting a record through the contest. Senior guard Ayanna Holmes also appeared in game No. 100 during her Charlotte career when the 49ers and Gamecocks met on the hardwood. Limiting offensive production Charlotte defeated Charleston Southern Dec. 7 inside Halton Arena and held the Buccaneers without a double-digit scorer for the first time this season. It marked only the second instance during head coach Cara Consuegra s tenure in which the opponent did not have a double-figure scorer. The only other contest in which it happened was also in Halton Arena, against Rhode Island in Atlantic 10 play, Feb. 4, 2012, during Consuegra s first season. Shutdown D Charlotte held Charleston Southern to a team cumulative 25.4 percent shooting performance in the 49ers victory over the Buccaneers Dec. 4 inside Halton Arena. Not only was it an opponent season-low field goal percentage, it also marked the second lowest by a Charlotte foe during head coach Cara Consuegra s four seasons. Only the 2013 Atlantic 10 Championships contest with Temple March 9 did an opponent shoot worse, connecting on 25.0 percent of its attempts. Eight of the Top 10 have been inside Halton Arena with the lone exceptions versus Temple and at Fordham in January Opponent low field goal percentages under Consuegra 1 vs. Temple (A-10) 25.0 (15-of-60) March 9, Charleston Southern 25.4 (15-of-59) Dec. 7, North Carolina Central 25.8 (8-of-31) Nov. 10, Colgate 26.0 (13-of-50) Jan. 6, at Fordham 27.1 (16-of-59) Jan. 25, Furman 27.8 (20-of-72) Jan. 13, 2012 Rhode Island 27.8 (15-of-54) Feb. 4, Temple 28.8 (15-of-52) Feb. 6, Arkansas State 29.2 (19-of-65) Nov. 13, Coppin State 29.4 (20-of-68) Jan. 3, 2013 Brown breaks out versus the Buccaneers Sophomore Tanisha Brown continued her strong play recently with her best game to-date with a near double-double of nine points and game-high 10 rebounds in the Dec. 7 victory over Charleston Southern. Brown needed only 14 minutes to accomplish the feat and came after she has been shifted to a post position from her regular guard spot to get more playing time. The 10 rebounds marked only the second double-digit performance on the glass by any 49er thus far this season. Distributing the ball well Charlotte posted a season-high 24 assists in the Dec. 7 win over Charleston Southern with nine of the 12 players who saw action having at least one. The 49ers converted 27 made field goals off the 24 assists, an 88.9 percent conversion rate. Freshman Griffin Dempsey led the way with a career-best six, while senior Ayanna Holmes added five. Nation s top defense? No problem Charlotte faced the top-ranked defense nationally when it met Presbyterian Dec. 18 for Education Day. The Blue Hose entered the contest ranked No. 1 among the 343 Division I schools in scoring defense (46.9 points per game) and field-goal percentage defense (30.2 percent). Charlotte registered 66 points and converted 51.1 percent of its field goals in the victory, setting opponent season highs against Presbyterian. The 49ers torched the nets for 56.0 percent in the second half on their way to their best shooting performance of the season to-date. Meanwhile, it was the Charlotte defense that came to play as the Blue Hose were held to 32.2 percent from the floor, a Top 15 effort under head coach Cara Consuegra, including just 24.1 percent during the first half. Education Day produces another solid crowd Charlotte played host to Presbyterian Dec. 18 in the annual Education Day matchup, in which the 49ers welcome students from local schools in the region to attend. The Niners used the energy from the kids to their advantage, picking up a win in front of a season-best 5,150 fans. Scoring high results in a near-perfect record The Niners maintained only one loss under head coach Cara Consuegra when tallying at least 80 points with their triumph over cross-county foe Davidson Dec. 21. The 86 points represented a season best and the sixth highest single-game total during Consuegra s four seasons. Back-to-back 80-plus performances Charlotte scored at least 80 points in consecutive Conference USA games at FIU Jan. 31 (W, 81-62) and against Old Dominion Feb. 7 (W, 82-67). It marked the second time under head coach Cara Consuegra in which the 49ers netted at least 80 points in two-straight contests and the first instance it happened against league foes. The only other time it happened was the start of the campaign against North Carolina Central (W, 80-31) and at TCU (W, 82-68), Nov. 10 and Nov. 14, respectively. 49ers games with at least 80 points under Consuegra 1 Jan. 18, 2014 at UTEP W, Nov. 19, 2011 Elon W, Jan. 3, 2012 Furman W, Dec. 21, 2011 North Carolina A&T W, March 1, 2014 Marshall W, Dec. 21, 2014 Davidson W, Feb. 13, 2014 at Louisiana Tech W, Feb. 21, 2015 at Southern Miss W, Nov. 14, 2012 at TCU W, Feb. 7, 2015 Old Dominion W, Dec. 8, 2012 Stetson W, Dec. 17, 2013 at Stetson L, Jan. 31, 2015 at FIU W, Feb. 1, 2012 Massachusetts W, Nov. 10, 2012 North Carolina Central W, Dec. 1, 2013 at UNLV W, Jan. 8, 2014 Old Dominion W, Gordon tallies double-double to cap non-conf. slate Junior Kira Gordon finished the non-conference portion of Charlotte s schedule with a double-double effort of 15 points and 10 rebounds against a Pac-12 opponent, at Utah Dec. 29. It marked the first double-double for Gordon, and the 49ers, this season and the third of her career. She had two as a sophomore in against Furman Dec. 29 (11 points, 10 rebounds) and in league play against Southern Miss Feb. 8 (12 points, 13 rebounds). Her double-double at Utah marked the first on the road during her career, as each of her other three double-doubles have happened inside Halton Arena. Gordon adds another double-double on national TV Junior Kira Gordon posted her second double-double of the season and fourth of her career with team highs of 19 points and 11 rebounds against preseason Conference USA favorite Middle Tennessee January 24 in a national TV broadcast on the Fox Sports Networks. Double double-doubles at Florida Atlantic Charlotte had two players register a double-double Jan. 29 at Florida Atlantic, junior Alexis Alexander and sophomore Lefty Webster. It marked the first time since Dec. 29 against Furman in which two 49ers posted a double-double in the same game, as Gabby Tyler and Kira Gordon accomplished the feat against the Paladins. Overall, during the four-year tenure of head coach Cara Consuegra, there have been 13 games with Charlotte having at least two players record a double-double. The Preseason All-Conference USA selection tallied a career-best tying 21 points on 9-of-18 field goals, including 3-of-7 from behind the arc, to finish as Charlotte s only double-digit scorer. She tallied 16 of her 21 points in the second half, after being limited to only 4:20 of action in the opening 20 minutes due to foul trouble. She also missed over three minutes of the second period with a minor injury before returning to action. Take her to Virginia and she will produce Sophomore Lefty Webster not only shines in her hometown of Norfolk, Virginia, but she does throughout the commonwealth as a whole. Olley finished with 10 points, her most up to that point, including knocking down 4-of-4 at the foul line, to go with five rebounds and a blocked shot in 26 minutes against the Lady Toppers. Free throws carry Webster to career high Lefty Webster went to the foul line more frequently than at any point in her career when Charlotte picked up a road C-USA win over North Texas Jan. 15. Webster converted 11-of-17 tries at the charity stripe on her way to tallying a career-high 25 points to lead all players. It marked her fourth career 20-plus scoring performance, all coming on the road and this season. Gordon helps 49ers cook Rice Junior Kira Gordon tallied a career-best 21 points, her first 20-plus scoring effort, in Charlotte s road C-USA victory at Rice Jan. 17. Gordon hit 6-of-9 field goals and 9-of-10 free throws as the Niners overcame an 11-point second-half deficit to grind out the triumph and extended their win streak to a season-high three straight. Holmes comes up big late against Owls Senior Ayanna Holmes compiled one of her more complete games of the campaign Jan. 17 at Rice, playing the full 40 minutes for the second time this year and adding seven points and six rebounds. Holmes biggest contribution, however, was hitting a 3-pointer with 1:18 left to provide the 49ers enough cushion to hold on for the come-from-behind win. Holmes comes up big late against the other Owls Ayanna Holmes must enjoy playing schools with Owls as their nickname because she had another solid performance when Charlotte was at Florida Atlantic Jan. 29. Holmes scored 10 points, while handing out nine assists for a near double-double plus adding four steals in 36 minutes. Holmes turns up the dial against Lady Monarchs Senior Ayanna Holmes continued her solid play into February, and put together perhaps her best collegiate contest yet against Old Dominion Feb. 7. Holmes hit 5-of-8 field goals, including 2-of-3 from behind the 3-point arc, while dropping in 6-of-6 free throws for a career-high 18 points against the Lady Monarchs. She added eight assists, five rebounds and three steals in 33 minutes with just two turnovers as the 49ers started the second half of the Conference USA schedule. Alumnae night turns into a success Charlotte women s basketball held its annual Alumnae Night Feb. 7 when the 49ers topped Old Dominion inside Halton Arena. Charlotte welcomed 23 former players plus coaches and managers back for the event, spanning as far back as 1980 up through 2014, which included a pre-game social event and halftime recognition on the Halton Arena playing surface. Her final basket came with just over 17 seconds left in regulation, with her toes just inside her trademark 3-point arc. Sigmon becomes the first player to play exclusively for head coach Cara Consuegra to reach the plateau. Jennifer Hailey ( ) played her junior and senior seasons for Consuegra during the head coach s first two years with the 49ers on her way to collecting 2013 Atlantic 10 Player of the Year honors. The 49ers topping the 20-point barrier against the Lady Eagles included sophomore Lefty Webster (24), senior Hillary Sigmon (23) and junior Kira Gordon (21). The trio shot a combined 26-of-46 (56.5 percent) from the floor, 7-of-18 beyond the 3-point arc and 9-of-10 at the foul line. Charlotte now has had four games in program history (based on available records) in which three players tallied at least 20 points, the last coming Feb. 21, 1981, at Mars Hill.
