The Niners entered the season with nine letterwinners and all five starters returning for head coach Cara Consuegra s second year at the helm. Preseason predictions placed Charlotte third in the expanded 16-team Atlantic 10 race, its final campaign playing in the conference before re-joining Conference USA next season. Senior Jennifer Hailey, a Preseason All-Atlantic 10 First Team and All-Atlantic 10 Defensive Team honoree, moved within 34 points of joining the 1,000-point club and becoming the 20th member in program history to reach the plateau following a double-double of 10 points/10 rebounds in the season opener against North Carolina Central November 10. The 49ers are one of just 14 programs nationally, and the only non-bcs school, to reach the postseason in each of the last 10 years after extending the streak last season with a WNIT berth. Long-range threat asophomore Hillary Sigmon made an immediate impact on the program during her first collegiate campaign last season on her way to garnering All-Atlantic 10 Rookie Team accolades. anot only did she set a single-season school freshman record with her point field goal percentage, but it also broke the overall standard in 49ers history. ashe converted 37 of her 77 attempts from long range for a better percentage than her overall mark of 68-of-154 (44.2 percent) on field goals. New coaching staff addition ajoining the Charlotte coaching staff this season is Joanne Aluka-White, who spent the previous six seasons at FIU in the Sun Belt. aaluka-white competed in the 2004 Summer Olympics with Nigeria, leading the squad to the first victory by an African nation in the Games. ashe is a 2001 graduate of Middle Tennessee, where she earned Ohio Valley Freshman of the Year honors (prior to the school joining the Sun Belt) and finished with over 1,000 career points. ashe also played professionally, both domestically and overseas. In the US, she saw time with the Dallas Fury of the now defunct National Women s Basketball League. The coach of the Fury for the 2004 campaign was Hall of Famer Nancy Lieberman.
