On its first possession, the Statesmen needed just eight plays to go 54 yards and take a 7-0 lead on a 1-yard run by Godinho less than five minutes into the contest. He finished with 107 yards on the ground and a pair of TDs. The Red Devils recovered a Hobart fumble deep in the Statesmen s zone midway through the second quarter setting up a 25- yard field goal by Drew Magyar for their lone score of the afternoon. Hobart answered just 53 seconds later on a 59-yard scamper by Holleran, to send Hobart into halftime with a 14-3 lead. The Statesmen opened the second half with a drive that showcased Godinho. He carried the ball on each of Hobart s six plays, gaining 42 yards and his second touchdown. JOE PIROZZOLO closed out the scoring when he hauled in a three-yard Swanson pass with just under five minutes remaining in the third quarter. The rest of the afternoon belonged to the Hobart defense and the right foot of DAN SUOZZI. He averaged 40.5 yards per punt, including four inside the Dickinson 20. The Statesmen s second possession of the afternoon was a short one. On the second play of the drive, CRAIG SWANSON connected with DAN SUOZZI for a 38-yard touchdown pass. Suozzi continued to electrify throughout the game, making seven catches for 101 yards. His punting also helped pin the Union offense inside its own 20-yard line four times. Midway through the fourth quarter, after a marvelous punt by Suozzi, the Dutchmen started a drive from their own 2- yard line. On second down, George Beebe coughed up the ball and Hanly pounced on it for Hobart at the Dutchmen 6-yard line. Three plays later Swanson called his own number, and punched it in on from the one to give Hobart a 14-0 lead. Union stormed right back down the field with an eight-play, 75-yard drive, capped by a 32-yard touchdown pass. The PAT failed, and the Statesmen were up On Union s final possession, the Dutchmen heaved a desperation pass toward the end zone that fell incomplete as time expired, but a pass interference penalty gave the Dutchmen one last shot from the Hobart 17. TIM BOOTH tipped Union s do-over pass at the line and Hanly made the interception, sealing Hobart s third win at Frank Bailey Field in as many tries. 3 HOBART 17, Ithaca 6 GENEVA Hobart improved to 7-0 for the first time since 1954 with a 17-6 defeat of No. 21 Ithaca. TY GODINHO rushed for 134 yards and a touchdown to lead the Statesmen to their third win over the Bombers in 26 meetings. Hobart dominated time of possession, holding on to the ball for 37 minutes and 27 seconds, including a decisive fourth-quarter drive that ran 8:15 off the game clock. CRAIG SWANSON (17-30, 250 yds) capped the 13- play drive with a 1-yard keeper. Defensively, Hobart limited the Bombers to just 27 yards of total offense and a single first down in the second half. DAVID SZENTESY and JIMMY GRADIS led the team with eight tackles apiece. Ithaca opened the afternoon s scoring on a 28-yard Josh Felicetti to Pete McCaffrey pass early in the first quarter. The Bombers failed to convert the point after try and led 6-0. The Statesmen claimed the lead early in the second quarter when EVERTON McLEAN forced an Ithaca fumble, that, three plays later, led to a 1-yard Godinho score. An extra point by ERIC AMPUJA gave Hobart a 7-6 lead that proved to be all the offense Hobart needed. He also added a third quarter, 42-yard field goal. The Bombers advanced to the Hobart 20 just once after their initial touchdown missing a 37-yard field goal attempt midway through the second quarter and never got closer than the Hobart 32 after that. JOHN FISHER 17, Hobart 14 PITTSFORD Ranked 25th in the nation, Hobart entered its final road game riding a seven-game win streak and staring across the field at one of the most improved and underrated football teams in New York. The Statesmen opened the scoring, going 50 yards in seven plays, the last a 13- yard TD pass from CRAIG SWANSON to RICK PIÑERO. The Cardinals pulled even in the waning seconds of the opening frame. The Statesmen missed a pair of second quarter field goal attempts from 30 and 47 yards, while Fisher added a touchdown late in the half to take a 14-7 lead into the break. The Cardinals tacked on a 28-yard third quarter field goal to extend their lead, In the fourth quarter with the pressure building, the Hobart offense responded with an eight-play, 73-yard drive, capped by a 5- yard Swanson to JOE PIROZZOLO (10 rec, 109 yds) pass for a touchdown. The point after pulled the Statesmen to within a field goal. On their final possession, Swanson moved the Statesmen into field goal range, but the 34-yard kick missed left, and St. John Fisher ran out the clock. JIMMY GRADIS, CHRIS HANLY, and DAVID SZENTESY led Hobart with nine tackles each. Lost in the disappointment was the record-breaking performance of Swanson. He eclipsed Greg Helmer s single season passing yards mark (1,913 in 1996) with 221 yards raising his season total to 1,986 yards. With the victory, Hobart clinched its first perfect season in the UCAA (4-0). Godinho s four TD performance was the first by a Statesman since Keith Brandon 01 rushed for four on Oct. 27, 1997, at Alfred. Godinho scored on second quarter runs of one and 16 yards and converted a twopoint try to put the Statesmen ahead, 14-0, late in the second quarter. The Engineers got on the board just before the half ended, however, as Dan Cole connected with Evan Cochran from 29 yards out. The PAT sailed wide right. CRAIG SWANSON completed just two passes for 24 yards in the first half, but it was enough to become the first Hobart quarterback to surpass the 2,000-yard mark in a single season. Hobart moved ahead, 21-6, midway through the third quarter when Swanson hit RICK PIÑERO from 28 yards. Rensselaer answered right back on a 10- yard strike from Cole to Danny Stephens. Godinho scored twice more, the first late in the third, the second early in the fourth, and Hobart held off a late rush by the Engineers offense. 4 2002 GAME RECAPS/2002 FINAL STATISTICS John Carroll 27, HOBART 7 GENEVA John Carroll advanced to the second round of the Division III Playoffs with a 27-7 victory over Hobart. The 11th-ranked Blue Streaks overcame extremely muddy conditions to score 27 unanswered points and improve to 10-1 on the season. The Statesmen end the year with an 8-2 mark. On the game s opening drive and facing third and 11, John Carroll quarterback Tom Arth fumbled and DAVID SZENTESY pounced on the loose ball at the JCU 26. Three plays later CRAIG SWANSON threw a 20-yard strike to RICK PIÑERO for his 32nd career touchdown pass, breaking the record previously held by Greg Helmer 97. The Blue Streaks second possession lost 14 yards in three plays, and JCU s punt gave the Statesmen the ball near midfield. Hobart ran the ball on the first five plays, gaining 42 yards to move to the Blue Streaks 7-yard line. A 6-yard Swanson to RYAN ADAMS pass gave the Statesmen second down and goal from the one. TY GODINHO was stopped for no gain on two straight plays. After a timeout, the coaching staff opted to hand the ball off to ALEX BELL. The sloppy conditions and defensive penetration caused the ball to pop out on the hand off and Liam Stull picked it up and raced 97 yards untouched to tie the game. The Hobart offense never got inside the red zone again. The Blue Streaks took the lead for good at the 14:03 mark of the second quarter on a 75-yard pass play from Arth to Adam Therrien. Therrien finished the afternoon with four receptions, including three touchdowns, for 146 yards. In his final game for the Hobart 11, TIM BOOTH led the team with seven tackles, including a half sack, while DAVID SZENTESY added five tackles, three fumble recoveries, and a sack. 8 UPSTATE COLLEGIATE ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION The Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association is comprised of nine, privately-funded colleges and universities in New York State, sponsoring championships in 22 sports. The member institutions of the UCAA place the highest priority on the overall quality of the educational experience and on the successful completion of its student-athletes academic programs. The member institutions seek to establish and maintain an environment in which a student-athlete s athletic activities are conducted as an integral part of the educational experience. Originally founded in 1995, Clarkson University, Hamilton College, Hobart and William Smith Colleges, the University of Rochester, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, St. Lawrence University, Skidmore College, and Union College are charter members. Vassar College became a full-time member of the league during the academic year. Beginning in 2004, the UCAA will welcome three associate members the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point, and Worcester Polytechnic Institute to compete in football only. The trio will join Hobart, Rochester, RPI, St. Lawrence, and Union. The expansion will make the UCAA eligible for an automatic bid for the league s champion to the NCAA Playoffs. Over the past eight seasons, Hobart has posted a (.625) record in UCAA play, including three league titles (1998, 2000, 2002). Statesmen have garnered 10 UCAA Player of the Year awards, including 2002 Offensive Player of the Year Craig Swanson and 2002 Defensive Player of the Year Tim Booth, and 89 All-UCAA honors. Hobart has represented the UCAA in the NCAA Playoffs in two of the past three seasons, posting a 1-2 record. The Statesmen blanked Bridgewater State in their first NCAA appearance, 25-0, while both losses came to eventual semifinalists.
