The Bombers won the inaugural meeting in 1961, 19-6, took each of the first 10 and captured 22 of the first 23. All three of Hobart s victories have come on Boswell Field (1983, 2000, 2002). PREVIOUS MEETING: The Statesmen moved to 7-0 for the first time since 1954 with a 17-6 victory over the Bombers. TY GODINHO rushed for 134 yards and a touchdown as Hobart dominated time of possession (37:27). Ithaca scored the game s opening TD, a 28-yard pass from Josh Felicetti to Pete McCaffrey, but was shutout the remainder of the day. The Statesmen defense limited the Bombers to just 27 yards and one first down in the second half. DAVID SZENTESY and JIMMY GRADIS led the charge with eight tackles each. EMPIRE STRIKES BACK: Today s game is the second in a trilogy of showdowns between the Statesmen and members of the Empire 8 Conference. Hobart topped Alfred last weekend, and will host St. John Fisher College on Nov. 8. The unbeaten Bombers (4-0) have already locked up the league title. SERIES FINALE: Today s game is the last, at least in the foreseeable future, between Hobart and Ithaca. In 2004, the Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association will expand to eight teams. The Bombers, Alfred and St. John Fisher will come off the schedule next season to make room for Coast Guard, Kings Point, and WPI. BOMB SQUAD: Juniors TY GODINHO and RICK PIÑERO are the Statesmen with the most career success against Ithaca. In two previous meetings, Godinho has rushed for 242 yards and two touchdowns against the Bombers, averaging 4.75 yards per carry, while Piñero has eight catches for 131 yards (16.4 yds/rec). NATIONAL RANKINGS: The Statesmen are peppered throughout the NCAA s Division III weekly statistical rankings. JAMIE ANDERSON is second in passes defended (2.4/gm) and third in interceptions (1.0/gm), while DAN SUOZZI is 23rd in receiving yards (102.0/gm), 32nd in all-purpose yards (154.5/gm), and 39th in receptions per game (6.2). As a team, Hobart is fifth in turnover margin (+2.3/gm), 12th in pass efficiency defense (81.4), 19th in scoring defense (13.2 papg), 28th in rushing defense (100.5 yds/gm), and 36th in total defense (275.5 yds/gm). 5K AND COUNTING: Against Alfred, senior quarterback CRAIG SWANSON became the first Statesman to throw for more than 5,000 career yards (5,069). He also improved the school record for career completions by one (393). Earlier this season against Rochester, he broke the six-year-old career passing record of 4,501 yards set by GREG HELMER 97. Swanson holds 25 school records, including all three (game, season, career) for passing yards and passing touchdowns. JUST FOR KICKS: Junior ERIC AMPUJA already owns the Hobart career records for PATs made and points by a kicker. He broke the PAT record in 2002 at F&M and currently boasts 71. Ampuja toppled the points by a kicker mark on Oct. 18, also against the Diplomats, and sports 110 career points. The next mark on his horizon is the career field goals made record established by SHAWN FAZIO 81 (19). Ampuja split the uprights twice against Alfred, from 29 and 33 yards, to raise his total FGM to 13.

The Statesmen have recorded 13 interceptions this season, including five against both Union and Rochester. Overall, the defense has 26 takeaways against just 12 giveaways by the offense for an impressive +14 turnover margin. MOTIVATIONAL SPEAKER: Only his players know what Coach MIKE CRAGG says in the locker room at halftime, but whatever it is, it s working. Since the start of the 2000 season, the third quarter has belonged to Hobart. During that 36 game span, the Statesmen have posted 22 third quarter shutouts and allowed just two teams to score more than seven points: Widener in 2000 and Ithaca in Having outscored the opposition in the third frame, Hobart is The Statesmen have surrendered just three points in the third quarter this season, a 42-yard Alfred field goal. TOP TACKLER: Opponents would be smart to avoid senior linebacker DAVID SZENTESY who has led the Statesmen in tackles in each of the last two seasons. He finished 2002 with 76 tackles, the most by a Statesman since 1997, and a team-best 8.5 tackles for a loss. A 2002 All-UCAA first-team honoree, the native of Lackawanna had a teamhigh six fumble recoveries and 4.5 sacks. Through six games, Szentesy is second on the team with 36 stops, including two sacks. HARD TO TY UP: Junior TY GODINHO leads the UCAA in rushing touchdowns (8) and is second in scoring (8.3 ppg) and rushing (98.2 yds/g). The native of Lancaster, N.Y., has rushed for 100-plus yards in each of the past two games, including a career-high 174 against Franklin & Marshall, giving him yard games for his career. Godinho led the UCAA in rushing last season with 958 yards, the most by a Hobart back since KEITH BRANDON 01 gained 1,052 in Godinho also produced 14 rushing touchdowns, the most by a Statesman since Brandon tallied 15 in ARMY OF ONE: Junior DAN SUOZZI is arguably the best all-around player in the UCAA. Coming off a season that saw him earn first-team All-UCAA accolades at wide receiver, punter, and return specialist, he currently leads the league in all purpose yards per game (154.5), is second in punting average (36.9 yds/p) and receiving yards per game (102.0), and is third in receptions per game (6.2). LONG RANGE FORECAST: At his career pace of 70.7 receiving yards per game, DAN SUOZZI will break the Hobart career mark on Sept. 18, 2004, at Franklin & Marshall. He needs just 334 yards to break 2002 Hobart Hall of Fame Inductee SCOTT GEISE s (Class of 83) career record of 1,889. Using Suozzi s current season per game average (102.0), he ll break Geise s record on Sept. 11, 2004, at home against Dickinson. DOUBLE EDGED SWORD: If opponents think that shutting down wide receiver DAN SUOZZI means putting a stop to the Statesmen s passing game, they better think again. Junior wide receiver RICK PIÑERO is just five receptions behind Suozzi (32) and has caught three touchdowns this season. MR. ROBINSON S NEIGHBORHOOD: First-year outside linebacker NOLAN ROBINSON has to be considered the favorite to capture the UCAA Rookie of the Year Award. The native of Johnson City, N.Y., leads the team lead in tackles with 39 (22 solo), including 5.5 for a loss. He has earned the UCAA Rookie of the Week award three times and captured last week s UCAA Defensive Player of the Week Award with seven tackles, including two sacks. A two-year captain and All-Metro selection at JCHS, Robinson was also an All-State wrestler for the Wildcats. PIANO MAN: Sophomore JIMMY GRADIS is the football team s resident pianist. A native of Greenlawn, N.Y., he has played the organ at his church since he was in the ninth grade. On the gridiron, Gradis has been a Big Shot. Over the past three games his first starts at outside linebacker he has posted a team best 19 tackles, including 15 solo, three quarterback hurries, two interceptions, two fumble recoveries, and one forced fumble. As a first-year, he played defensive back, shared the team lead in interceptions (3), and finished fifth on the team in tackles (50).

A 31-yard field goal with 14 seconds remaining, sent the Hobart football team to its first season-opening defeat since Dickinson overcame a nine-point fourth quarter deficit with the game s final 10 points. The Red Devils (2-0) led 7-0 at the end of the first frame. Hobart (0-1) broke through midway through the second quarter on a 26-yard field goal by ERIC AMPUJA. Three minutes later, running back JACK HOLLERAN ran in from eight yards out to put the Statesmen in front Holleran finished with a game-high 116 yards rushing on 20 carries. Hobart upped its lead to 16-7 when quarterback CRAIG SWANSON hit wide receiver RICK PIÑERO for a 16-yard strike late in the third quarter. In what proved to be the difference in the game, the point after try was blocked. Swanson completed 16-of-24 for 192 yards and a touchdown, becoming just the second Statesmen to throw for more than 4,000 career yards (4,019). DAN SUOZZI caught a game-high five passes for 102 yards. Dickinson scored on a 20-yard touchdown run midway through the final stanza, setting up the dramatic last-second kick. Defensively, DAVID SZENTESY led Hobart with 10 tackles, including a sack, while NOLAN ROBINSON added nine stops in his Hobart debut. A swarming defense led Hobart to a 35-3 victory over Union at Boswell Field. JAMIE ANDERSON (pictured left) led the charge with the first three interceptions of his career, racking up 51 return yards in addition to five tackles and four pass breakups. The win evened the Statesmen s record at 1-1, 1-0 in the UCAA, and marked the first time Hobart has beaten the Dutchmen (2-1, 1-1) in Geneva since Anderson s first pick, returned 24 yards to the Union one, set up a single yard dive by TY GODINHO with 3:21 remaining in the opening frame. The offense was hitting on all cylinders in the second quarter, scoring 28 unanswered to take a 35-0 lead into the locker room. DAVID SZENTESY put Hobart in position for its second score with a 25-yard interception return to the Union 17. Szentesy finished with six tackles, including a sack. Five plays later, Godinho posted his second TD, this time from two yards out with 10:12 remaining in the half. Anderson s second pick also led to a Hobart score, thanks to a 27-yard return to the Union 5. JACK HOLLERAN took the first snap in for six. Hobart s fourth touchdown was a record breaker. Taking over on the Hobart 12-yard line, Swanson heaved a pass down field to DAN SUOZZI. Suozzi made the catch near the Hobart 45, juked a defender and outran another for an 88-yard scoring play. The longest pass play in Hobart history, it eclipsed the 85-yard mark set on a GREG HELMER 94 to NATE WAYE 95 pass on Oct. 22, 1994, against Alfred. Swanson completed 15-of-22 for 209 yards, while Suozzi made four catches for 107 yards. RICK PIÑERO led Hobart with a game-high six catches for 38 yards. Godinho, who finished with 63 yards rushing, closed out the first half scoring with his third TD of the game, an 11-yard scamper with 1:17 remaining. The Dutchmen offense meanwhile, managed no yards of offense in the first 15 minutes, and just 76 in the first half. Union particularly struggled with third down conversions, finding success on just three of 17 opportunities for the game. The Hobart Statesmen won a tough battle in the rain, downing St. Lawrence at Leckonby Stadium. Hobart struck first on a 49-yard pass to wide receiver DAN SUOZZI from CRAIG SWANSON less than three minutes into the contest. The Statesmen gained possession off an interception by defensive back DYSHAWN WASHINGTON. The Saints responded with 10 second quarter points, converting a 48-yard field goal at the 13:30 mark, and posted a 5-yard touchdown run by tailback Brett Hughes six minutes later. Hobart was able to take a lead into the locker room at the break thanks to a 10- play, 35-yard drive, capped by a one-yard dive by running back TY GODINHO as time expired. The Statesmen used the opening drive of the second half to move 73 yards on eight plays. Another one-yard Godinho dive gave Hobart a lead. Godinho finished with 99 yards and a pair of touchdowns on 28 carries. Swanson found wide receiver RICK PIÑERO on a four-yard pass play to close out the scoring with 2:32 remaining. Swanson finished the afternoon 15-of-22 for 193 yards and two touchdowns. The native of Jamestown, N.Y., needs just 81 yards to eclipse Hobart s career passing mark (4,501) set by GREG HELMER 94. Piñero led the Statesmen with five receptions for 74 yards. Defensively, Hobart was once again outstanding. The Statesmen, who entered the game leading the nation in turnover margin (+3.0/gm) forced three turnovers (2 INT, fumble) without committing one. His longest punt of the day was a 47-yarder. The Statesmen not only benefited from his long punts St. Lawrence had an average starting field position of its own 28-yard line but also from the hang time on his punts. His final punt of the day was a 42-yard boomer that hung in the air long enough for the coverage team to get down field and recover the muffed catch by the Saints return man. Suozzi also aided Hobart s cause with two punt returns for 17 yards (8.5 yds/ret), and two kick returns for 43 yards (21.5 yds/ret). His returns helped Hobart to an average starting field position of their own 39.

Union HOBART GENEVA The Hobart defense forced eight turnovers and CRAIG SWANSON became the College s all-time leading passer, but it was Rochester that secured the victory, A sloppy game for both offenses, Rochester quarterback Aaron Molisani was intercepted five times and the Yellowjackets lost three fumbles, but a one-yard Molisani keeper with 10:54 remaining in the fourth quarter proved to be the only second half points and the margin of victory. From that point on, Hobart took just one drive deep into Rochester territory. The Statesmen took over on the Yellowjacket s 49 with 3:14 remaining. Five plays later, Swanson completed a 16-yard pass to DAN SUOZZI to break the school s career passing record. Swanson finished with 99 yards passing to raise his career total to 4,520, 19 more than the previous record-holder GREG HELMER 97. Facing fourth and one with under a minute remaining, Hobart ran a screen pass to the left that Rochester sniffed out and stopped for a six-yard loss. From there Molisani only had to take a knee to secure the win. The Yellowjackets opened the scoring with a 26-yard second quarter field goal. The Statesmen punted three plays later, but recovered a muffed fair catch at the Rochester 22. Eight plays later, RICK PIÑERO pulled in a three-yard TD pass from Swanson. The Yellowjackets responded with the longest drive of the half, marching 65 yards in 12 plays to take a 10-7 lead on a 10-yard Molisani to David Ferris pass. Molisani finished 18-of- 42 for 200 yards. Not to be denied a lead at the half, Hobart took advantage of a poor Rochester punt on the final drive of the opening 30 minutes, moving 36 yards in nine plays, capped by a nineyard Swanson to Suozzi strike. The extra point was blocked and the Statesmen led Rochester s game-winning drive covered 79 yards in 12-plays. The Statesmen twice appeared to have stopped the Yellowjackets with pass breakups on third down, but both times Hobart was whistled for personal fouls the first for a helmet-to-helmet hit and the other that moved the ball to the Hobart 21 on an early late hit. Defensively, JIMMY GRADIS, DAVID SZENTESY, and WALT BENNETT made nine, eight, and eight tackles, respectively. Gradis and RYAN SMITH each recorded a pair of interceptions. Molisani s final interception of the afternoon was to his former high school teammate at Canandaigua Academy, JAMIE ANDERSON. In a game that wasn t as close as the final score looked, the Statesmen scored 28 unanswered points, before the Diplomats scored on each of their final three possessions. A record setting afternoon for Suozzi, his 12 catches broke NICO KARAGOSIAN s (Class of 97) single game mark of 11 set in 1994, his 239 yards surpassed the record of 201 set by SCOTT GEISE 83, and his three touchdown receptions tied the school s single game record. Hobart got on board 64 seconds into the second quarter when TY GODINHO closed out an 86-yard drive with a three-yard run into the end zone. Suozzi set up the score with a 77- yard grab that moved Hobart to the F&M 3. Suozzi helped the Statesmen take a 14-0 lead into the locker room with a 50-yard touchdown reception with 1:59 remaining in the half. After the break, the Statesmen running game took advantage of the holes opened up by the passing game, as Godinho rushed for 148 of his career-high 174 yards in the second half. Hobart s second drive of the third quarter covered 75 yards in 10 plays, and was capped by a two-yard CRAIG SWANSON to Suozzi pass in the end zone. With the point after try successful, ERIC AMPUJA broke the career record for points by a kicker formerly held by SHAWN FAZIO 81 with his 103rd career point. Three plays later, JAMIE ANDERSON recorded his fifth interception of the season on a diving catch at the Diplomats 44-yard line. Two plays after that Swanson hit Suozzi for 44 yards and a score, as Hobart took a 28-0 lead into the fourth quarter. Swanson completed 20- of-34 for 324 yards, the third highest passing yard total of his career. Through 11 possessions, Franklin & Marshall punted eight times, turned the ball over on downs, fumbled, and threw an interception, but something clicked in the fourth quarter for the Diplomats offense. F&M put together three TD drives in the fourth quarter, the last with 2:10 remaining, but the ensuing on-side kick attempt was fielded by the Statesmen who ran out the clock. Defensively, Diplomat Dan Nadler led all players with 12 tackles, including three sacks, while JIMMY GRADIS and TONY CLEMENTE paced the Statesmen with eight stops apiece. Hobart held off a stubborn Alfred squad for a non-conference victory. In the process, CRAIG SWANSON broke the career record for completions and became the first Statesman to throw for more than 5,000 career yards. Hobart (4-2) opened the scoring three minutes into the contest, when TY GODINHO capped a nine-play, 77-yard drive with a 1-yard plunge. The teams traded field goals before halftime Hobart s coming on a 29-yard attempt by ERIC AMPUJA leaving the Statesmen a 9-3 lead. After the break, Hobart s defense surrendered its first third quarter points of the season when the Saxons (4-4) kicked a 42-yard field goal at the 10:26 mark. Ampuja knocked through his second three-pointer with 4:07 remaining in the third frame to give the Statesmen a 12-6 advantage. In the fourth quarter, Hobart constructed an 11-play, 68-yard drive that burned 4:41 off the clock and ended with a 4-yard scamper by Godinho. The Statesmen were successful on the two-point conversion try for a 20-6 lead. Godinho posted his second straight 100-yard game, with 119 yards on 31 carries. However, the 12-point advantage was short-lived as the Saxons moved 72 yards in seven plays, while using just 64 seconds, scoring their only touchdown of the day through the air from 20-yards out at the 7:05 mark. On its ensuing possession, Hobart was the very definition of clock management. Facing fourth and one from their own 27, the Statesmen lined up in punt formation, but DAN SUOZZI took the snap and ran for a 19-yard gain and a first down. Five plays later, Hobart faced another fourth down decision and again elected to go for it. Swanson hit Suozzi for five yards and the first down. The completion was the 393rd of his career breaking the Hobart career record set by GREG HELMER 97, while raising Swanson s career passing yard total to 5,069 yards. The Statesmen s final drive exhausted the game clock (15 plays, 70 yards, 7:05 TOP) and secured the victory. Swanson finished the day 20-of-34 for 225 yards. Suozzi made nine of those catches for 68 yards, while RICK PIÑERO caught seven passes for a game-high 108 yards. Defensively, the Statesmen limited the Saxons to just 188 yards of total offense, while holding Alfred s leading rusher, Jesse Raynor who entered the game 27th in the nation in rushing average (119.6) to just 72 yards. First-year NOLAN ROBINSON paced the Statesmen with seven tackles, including a pair of sacks.
