The Oilers would go on to win that game as Chris Chandler threw for three touchdowns in the game which saw both Terrell Davis (110 yards on 19 carries) and Houston s Rodney Thomas (104 yards on 13 carries) top the century mark. 49ers Background-When the 1992 NFL season began for the San Francisco 49ers, two members of head coach George Seifert s staff were current Denver Broncos head coach Mike Shanahan (offensive coordinator) and Titans head coach Jeff Fisher (secondary coach). Both head coaches served on the 49ers coaching staff during the seasons, both of which saw the squad lose to the Dallas Cowboys in the NFC Championship Game. Two years later (1995), they were each named head coaches for their respective teams. Ironically, Shanahan and Fisher are two coaches who have been with the same franchise over the last 10 seasons, something only Bill Cowher of the Pittsburgh Steelers can attest to after he was named their head coach in TV/RADIO Locally: WKRN (Ch. 2) Play-by-Play: Mike Patrick Color Analyst: Paul Maguire Joe Theismann LOCAL RADIO: WKDF (103.3 FM) Play-by-Play: Mike Keith Color Analyst: Pat Ryan Producer: Larry Stone TITANS-BRONCOS NOTES Both Titans offensive coordinator MIke Heimerdinger and Broncos head coach Mike Shanahan attended, graduated and played football at Eastern Illinois University. They were roommates during their freshman and sophomore years and would later join forces at the University of Florida in 1983 and in Denver, where Heimerdinger served on Shanahan s coaching staff from overseeing Denver s wide receivers. WR Drew Bennett needs two touchdowns to become the first receiver in NFL history to record 10 combined touchdowns in four consecutive games, breaking the current mark held by future Hall of Famer Jerry Rice (9), who accomplished the feat in 1987 and 1993 with the San Francisco 49ers. One more touchdown gives the UCLA standout eleven on the season, the most by any Oilers/Titans wideout since the NFL/AFL merger. This week s game features two placekickers whose names will go down in NFL history for their individual accomplishments. Denver K Jason Elam currently holds the NFL record for most consecutive PATs with 406. Furthermore, his 63 yard field goal against the Jacksonville Jaguars (10/25/98) tied the NFL s mark for longest field goal made (Tom Dempsey; N.O. Saints; 11/8/70 vs. Detroit). In contrast, Titans K Gary Anderson is playing his 23rd NFL season and ranks first on the NFL s all-time scoring list with 2,421 points and in games played in league history (351). WR Derrick Mason (1,055) and Drew Bennett (1,171) can become the third receiving tandem in franchise history to register 1,100- receiving yards if Mason collects 45 receiving yards, joining Charles Henningan(1,746)/Bill Groman(1,175) in 61 and Haywood Jeffires(1,181)/Drew Hill(1,109) in 91. There are four members on the Titans and Broncos coaching staffs who played on or coached on teams which won NCAA national titles. Titans head coach Jeff Fisher was a defensive back on the University of Southern California squad which won the national title in Broncos head coach Mike Shanahan served on the coaching staffs of Oklahoma (1975) and Eastern Illinois (1978) when both squads won their national titles. Denver s Ronnie Bradford suited up for the Colorado Buffalos when they shared the national title with Notre Dame in Titans special teams coach Alan Lowry played on the Texas Longhorns national title team in Titans QB Billy Volek can break the NFL record that he shares with Phil Simms (NY Giants), Dan Fouts (San Diego Chargers) and Dan Marino (Miami Dolphins) if he can record his third consecutive game with at least 400-passing yards Denver. SUPPLEMENTAL QUOTES The Titans media relations staff will provide additional player AND coaches quotes for both their local and out of town media on prior to their team s Wednesday s practice. Contact a representative from the Titans or Broncos PR staff for a copy of these quotes.

Fisher originally joined the Oilers in 1994 as the defensive coordinator, after serving as defensive backs coach for the San Francisco 49ers ( ). He began his coaching career with the Philadelphia Eagles in 1986, where he handled defensive backs until becoming the NFL's youngest defensive coordinator in From , Fisher was a cornerback for the Chicago Bears after being a seventh-round draft choice from USC. His overall career head coaching record is and has a career-mark of in the regular season and 1-0 against the Broncos. Shanahan worked two seasons as the Broncos quarterback coach ( ) and one as offensive coordinator (1991) and two as head coach for the Oakland Raiders ( ) before taking over the reigns as head coach for the Broncos. He was a three-year letterman at the Eastern Illinois University ( ) where he played quarterback. Overall, he is in his career and 0-1 against the Titans.

3 These are some notes from the Tennessee Titans setback against the Oakland Raiders last week. For the first time in franchise history the Titans have two 1,000-yard receivers (Mason & Bennett) and a 1,000-yard rusher (Chris Brown). WR Drew Bennett recorded his 9th and 10th touchdowns of the season and 17th and 18th of his career when he hauled in passes of 17-and 23 yards from Billy Volek in the first and second quarters. WR Drew Bennett became the first receiver in franchise history since Drew Hill in 1988 to record a double-digit touchdown season. He also tied Jerry Rice (1987, 93) for the most touchdown receptions (8) in NFL history over a three-game span. WR Drew Bennett tied the franchise record with 13 receptions, equaling the previous mark of 13 receptions held by Charles Hennigan at Boston (10/13/61) and Haywood Jeffires at the N.Y. Jets (10/13/91). WR Drew Bennett became the first receiver in franchise history since 1988 (Drew Hill) to post three consecutive 100 receiving games. It was the sixth 100-yard receiving game of Bennett s career. QB Billy Volek tossed his 15th, 16th, 17th and 18th touchdowns of the season and his third consecutive game with three or more touchdowns. It also tied his career-high with four touchdowns set last week vs. Kansas City. QB Billy Volek 282 passing yards in the first half were the most since Chris Chandler threw for 309 in the first half against Cincinnati (9/24/95). Volek surpassed his previous first-half high of 274 yards passing last week at home vs. Kansas City. *Titans head coach Jeff Fisher served on the San Francisco 49ers coaching staff when Broncos TE coach Brian Pariani was the offensive assistant in *Titans offensive coordinator Mike Heimerdinger served on the coaching staff at the University of Florida from when Broncos strength coaches Rick Tuten and Greg Saporta worked in the same capacity for the Gators and strength coach Cedric Smith was playing for the team. *Titans linebackers coach Dave McGinnis served as the defensive coordinator for the Arizona Cardinals in 1996 when Broncos special teams coach Ronnie Bradford and strength coach Cedric Smith were playing for the squad. *Titans defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz was worked as a scout and defensive assistant with the Baltimore Ravens/Cleveland Browns when Broncos d-line coach Jacob Burney served in the same capacity from Burney also coached at New Mexico from when Titans offensive assistant Ned James suited up at quarterback for the Lobos. *Titans assistant head coach/tight ends coach George Henshaw was head coach at Tulsa University in 1987 and had Burney serve as d-line coach for the Hurricanes that season. *Broncos defensive line coach Jacob Burney served as the d-line coach for the University of Tennessee in *Titans offensive lineman Jason Mathews played at Texas A&M when Broncos defensive assistant Kirk Doll coached the linebackers from TITANS-RAIDERS NOTES FROM WEEK 15 TITANS-BRONCOS CONNECTIONS WR Derrick Mason went over 1,000 receiving yards for the fourth consecutive season, becoming the first player in franchise history to post four consecutive seasons of 1,000 receiving yards. WRs Bennett and Mason became the first pair of receivers to have 1,000 yards receiving since 1991 (Haywood Jeffires 1,181 and Drew Hill 1,109). It s the fifth time in franchise history that a pair of receivers have posted 1,000 receiving yards in the same season. LB Keith Bulluckto record 15 tackles to give him 160 on the season, which would mark the third consecutive year he accomplished the feat, having totaled 180 in 2002 and 171 tackles last year. CB Andre Dyson needs two interceptions to tie Samari Rolle s mark in 2000 (7) for most interceptions by an Oilers/Titans cornerback since Richard Johnson picked off eight passes in TE Erron Kinney needs one touchdown reception to tie his career-high for touchdowns in a season set last year when he caught three. WR Derrick Mason needs 45 receiving yards to reach 1,100 receiving yards for the third time in his career (2001, 03), joining only Drew Hill ( 85, 86, 88, 91) as the only wideouts in franchise history to accomplish the feat in three different seasons. DE Antwan Odom needs one sack to become the third Titans rookie d-lineman to register at least three sacks in 2004 (LaBoy, 3.5; Starks, 4.5). QB Billy Volek needs three touchdowns to increase his streak of consecutive games with at least three touchdown passes to four. A TITANS VICTORY WOULD Give Jeff Fisher his second consecutive win and second career victory against the Broncos, having defeated the Broncos in his first season as head coach with the Houston Oilers, at the Astrodome (11/26/95). WINNING IN DECEMBER The Tennessee Titans have one game remaining on their December schedule this season to improve on their previous record of 19-9 during games played in December since the start of the 1998 season. In preparing for the Broncos this week, the Titans hope they can record their second win under head coach Jeff Fisher against Denver, a team the Houston Oilers defeated, in his first season as head coach of the franchise in The Titans are just one of two teams in the NFL who has recorded 20 wins during this time frame and are only one game behind the first place Green Bay Packers, whose final December game of the 2004 regular season will be against Minnesota next week. The Titans 20-9 mark translates into a winning percentage of.689, a mark that ranks among the best when you consider only five teams have a winning percentage of.650 or better entering this week s final December game across the league. The Titans are hoping to win each of the last two games of the season and what better place to do it than in front of your home fans. If the Titans can win against Denver combined with a Packers loss at Minnesota, then they would end the regular season tied for first place on the list for wins in December since the start of the 1998 season. The Titans first home victory of the season came when they defeated the Cincinnati Bengals, 27-20, which helped the team post their ninth win in their last 10 games against the Bengals under head coach Jeff Fisher since the start of the 1998 season. In this week s game agianst the Broncos, Fisher hopes to secure his second consecutive win over Denver, having won a nine point win against the Mike Shanahan Broncos in 1995 (42-33) during Fisher s first season at the helm of the franchise. The Titans have been known for getting off to a fast start since playing home games at the Coliseum and have shown their dominance in those games when analyzing their first half point total in their last 18 home games. In fact, they have outscored opponents 248 to 110 in the first half in the last 18 home games. Additionally, their 139 combined second quarter points is 29 more points than opponents have scored in the first half in the last 18 home games. 6 TIME OF POSSESSION The Tennessee Titans recorded their fifth game of the season in which it has controlled the clock for more than 35:00 when they lost to the Oakland Raiders last week. Despite the setback, the team held on to the ball for 35:11, the team s second consecutive week in which their time of possession figure was more than 35:00 having controlled the clock for 37:59 against the Kansas City Chiefs (12/13). In this their third nationally televised game of the season, it seems safe to say the Titans will once again score alot of points and control the clock having accomplished the feat in each of their previous two television games versus Kansas City and Green Bay. The Titans have had three games where they have controlled the clock for more than 37:00, two of those games coming in consecutive weeks against the San Diego Chargers (37:13; 10/4) and Green Bay Packers (38:00; 10/11). In defeating the Green Bay Packers that night 48-21, the Titans controlled the clock for 38:00 in the game, their best effort of the season in terms of time management. The 38:00 time of possession against the Packers resulted into 48 points, their highest point total since scoring 47 points at Pittsburgh Jan. 2, The last time the franchise posted 48 points was in a victory at home vs. Cincinnati 14 years ago (10/14/90). Additonally, the 38:00 time of possession helped the Titans score the most points ever by the Packers at Lambeau Field. The 48 points were also the most allowed by Green Bay at home since Detroit's win at old City Stadium in In their last two games against Kansas City and Oakland, the Titans have scored 42 combined points, rushed for 151 yards and accounted for 662 net total yards in the first half. After fourteen games of the regular season, Tennessee has posted seven games where the team as finished the game with a time of posession better than 32:00, something the squad has done in each of the last four games against Oakland Kansas City (37:59), Indianapolis (33:05, 12/5) and Houston (32:55). The Titans are currently second in the NFL in terms of time of possession, having averaged 32:47 for each game. They trail only the Pittsburgh Steelers (33:55) on the list and are one of only three teams who have controlled the clock for more than 32:00 entering Week 15 (Kansas City;32:12). By the way, this week s opponent, the Denver Broncos have controlled the clock for 31:47 on the season.the Titans finished the 2003 campaign ranked second (Denver, 33:53) in the AFC and tied for second in the NFL (Minnesota) in terms of controlling the clock as they held on to the ball for an average of 32:52. In 2002, the Titans were tied with the Pittsburgh Steelers for having the top time of possession in the NFL, averaging 32:47 per game. Denver has been one of the most effective running teams this season. Since the Titans are ranked 16th in the league against the run, they must contain the Broncos high powered rushing attack and hold on to the ball in order to defeat Denver. FIRST QUARTER POINT DIFFERENTIAL/FIRST HALF LEADS Since the Titans hired Jeff Fisher as their 15th head coach in 1995, the Oilers/Titans have as been known for getting out to a fast start. In his 160 regular season games, the Titans have led after the first quarter in 79 of those games. Fisher s 49.3 percentage ranks third on the all-time list among NFL s head coaches, one of whom just happens to be Mike Shanahan of the Denver Broncos. As for the Titans, they have only have been defeated six times since November 3rd, 2002 when their defense has prevented opponents from scoring a touchdown in the first quarter. Let s take a closer look and see how the Titans have fared when opponents have been held to three or fewer points since their matchup against the Indianapolis Colts on November 3, Name Record PCT Mike Shanahan 174 games/87 1st quarter leads 50.0 Greasy Neal 101 games/50 1st quarter leads 49.5 Jeff Fisher 160 games/79 1st quarter leads 49.4 Tennessee has scored 89 points in the first quarter, seven of which came last week in the loss at Oakland. After 14 games, the Titans first quarter point total ranks fifth in the NFL 11 points in front of the Denver Broncos who are seventh on the list. Furthermore, the 2003 Titans squad was able to score 103 first quarter points, a figure which can be surpassed in their last two games versus Denver and Detroit. NFL TEAMS WITH THE MOST FIRST QUARTER POINTS Teams Points Indianapolis Colts 113 Kansas City Chiefs 113 Pittsburgh Steelers 106 Philadelphia Eagles 93 Tennessee Titans 89 San Diego Chargers 82 Denver Broncos 78 In their setback to the Chiefs last week, the Broncos scored seven points, which came on a 22-yard touchdown pass from Jake Plummer to Rod Smith. 7 GREAT WALL OF NASHVILLE/RUSHING ATTACK Last week loss to the Oakland Raiders saw the Titans rushing attack only total 61 yards on 19 carries. However, the fact the team was behind early in the game which forced the team to throw the ball throughout the course of the game. Nevertheless, the depleted offensive line, which saw starter Justin Hartwig miss the game because of an injury, hopes to rebound from last week and regroup when they welcome the Denver Broncos and their eighth ranked defense to the Coliseum this week. When the Titans last played in front of a nationally televised audience two weeks ago against Kansas City, Chris Brown and Antowain Smith combined to lead the attack, as Tennessee ran for 163 yards on 33 carries and one touchdown. Brown rushed for 91 yards in the first half before leaving the game with an injury. Smith came in and continued running the ball effectivley as the Titans went down to the wire against the Chiefs, who won by eleven points in the game Injuries have decimated the entire offensive line this season as reserves Eugune Amano, Jacob Bell and and second-year player Todd Williams have been forced into action on the offensive line. The offensive line hopes it will see the return of veteran Brad Hopkins who broke his right hand against the Chicago Bears earlier in the season. The team has witnessed veteran Jason Mathews start at both left tackle and right guard in place of Hopkins and Benji Olson, who was declared inactive against Houston in Week 6 (10/17). Even though the line has been plagued by injuries, the offensive line has paved the way for Brown to collect 1,076 yards on the season, which currently ranks eighth in the AFC. Considering Brown has missed four games and two entire second halfs because of injury, his yardage total is an example of how well the o-line has been doing as a group up front. He has run for six 100-yard game on the season and seemed destined for his seventh against the Chiefs until his toe injury sent him to the sidelines in the second quarter. When Brown could not start because of a toe injury at Jacksonville (11/21) and Houston (11/28), Smith ran well behing the offensive line gaining 95 and 90 yards, respectively. In the Titans last two games against Kansas City and Indianapolis, the Titans rushing attack has combined for 278 yards on 58 carries, which averages to 4.8 yards per carry. Brown has three 100-yard games which saw the Colorado Buffalo total 100 yards before halfitime, hitting the 100-yard mark against Miami (9/11),104 yards against Indianapolis (9/19) and 103 yards against Green Bay before a nationally televised audience on Monday Night Football (10/11). The Broncos have allowed four opposing backs from the AFC to top the century mark as well as Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick earlier in the season. Last week saw the Chiefs Larry Johnson (151 yards; 12/5) top the century mark against Denver. Overall, the Chiefs Priest Holmes (151 yards, 9/12) Rudi JOhnson of the Cincinnati Bengals (119, 10/25), Vick (115 yards; 10/31) and LaDainian Tomlinson of the San Diego Chargers (113 yards; 12/5) have each surpassed 100 yards versus the Broncos. One other inteteresting statistic which shows how well the Titans offensive line is doing this season is to compare where the 1,717 yards ranks to the rest of the Oilers/Titans teams during the Jeff Fisher era after 14 games. The yardage total after fourteen games is the best performance since 1998 when the Oilers squad had run for 1,803 yards under Fisher. It is still the fourth highest in the Fisher era. YEAR YARDS , , , , , , , , , ,421 MOST NET RUSHING YARDS AFTER 14 GAMES SINCE 1995 TITANS SACK MACHINE Rien Long improved his sack total to five on the season when he totaled two sacks against the Oakland Raiders in last week s setback to the Silver and Black. The former Outland Trophy winner from Washington State had his first multi-sack game of his career and now has six sacks in his brief career with the the Tennessee Titans. Although the defense is not familar with Denver Broncos signal caller Jake Plummer, the defense hopes it can match the success Kansas City performed last week when the team sacked Plummer six times in the victory at Arrowhead Stadium. Not only was Plummer sacked six times but the Broncos top rusher, Tatum Bell, was limited to only 50 yards. In the last two games where the Broncos have been defeated, Plummer has been sacked five times, twice against the San Diego Chargers two weeks ago. Despite the fact the team has lost six games, the offensive line is known for giving Plummer ample time to throw the ball. This season, he has thrown for 3,540 yards and 23 touchdowns. The Titans defense has recorded nine games where they have registerd two or more sacks, five coming in their Week 10 contest against Chicago (11/14) and four versus Cincinnati (10/31) in Week 8. Three of the five sacks against Chicago were credited to Kevin Carter, who became the first Titans defensive player since Carlos Hall to post three or more sacks in a regular season game. Hall accomplished the feat against Donovan McNabb of the Philadelphia Eagles when the Titans posted a win in the 2002 season opener (9/8). The Titans defense hopes it can provide enough pressure so Plummer can not match his 499-yard performance against the Atlanta Falcons, which still is the most passing yards by a quarterback this season. Tennessee has had only one game where it did not record a sack this season and that came against Brett Favre of the Green Bay Packers, who despite not being sacked threw three interceptions en route to the Titans convincing win on Monday Night Football. The Broncos are known for getting on the scoreboard early and have scored 78 points this season in the first quarter. In order to offset this offensive point total by Denver, the Titans must be able to stop the run and force Plummer into misakes. Tennessee has garnered 30 sacks this season and is 10 shy from matching their success from the 2003 regular season when their 38 sacks ranked tied for fourth in the AFC (Buffalo) and tied for ninth (Philadelphia) in the NFL. The team hopes it can continue their success this season getting to the quarterback as it ranks fifth in the NFL with a total of 240 sacks since the start of the 1999 season. 8 THE ROOKIES As a result of several injuries to key offensive and defensive players, the Tennessee Titans 2004 draft class has been thrust into action and have gotten a lot of game experience in this their first NFL seasons. The rookie s presence is most notably on the defense, which has seen six of their first year players either start and/or see a majority of playing time on several defensive packages. In last week s game at Oakland, five rookies were on the field when the offensive and defensive teams took the field. Leading the way is Jacob Bell, who played primarily at tackle at Miami (Ohio) but hasbeen forced to start each of the last 13 games at left guard in place of veteran Zacch Piller. Bell has been in every game this season where Titans back Chris Brown topped the 100- yard mark as well as in each of the last three games which has seen Billy Volek throw for 11 combined touchdowns. Starting alongside Bell against the Raiders was Eugene Amano, who was selected in the seventh round out of Southeast Missouri State. Because of a severe injry to Justin Hartwig, Titans offensive line coach Mike Munchak helped prepare Amano throughout the week leading up to the game. Although the Titans lost, Amano did play every snap at center, a position he excelled in at SEMO for he was named the Dave Rimington Award winner, which goes to the top center in college football. The bulk of the draft was focused on improving the defensive unit as the Titans selected four players on the d-line, each of whom are known for their pass rushing exploits. After 14 games, the Titans have three rookies who are among the top five in sacks, the leader rookie sack master just happens to be the youngest player on the roster. Randy Starks (21) started his seventh game of the season at defensive tackle, primarily because the team has lost Albert Haynesworth to an elbow injury in the last five games. Against the Raiders last week, Starks helped Tennessee with its only interception of the game after he deflected a Kerry Collins pass at the line of scrimmage right into the hands of linebacker Keith Bulluck. Starks has 4.5 sacks and has his eyes set on making the All-Rookie team. Despite the fact three other defensive lineman were selected in the first round (Tommie Harris, Kendrick Udeze, Will Smith), Starks productivity is warranted for cementing his name on the team. He ranks eighth on the team in tackles and currently ranks fourth among all rookies selected in this year s class in sacks, a halfsack behind Udeze and one sack in front of Harris. He had six consecutive games where he had at least five tackles, two of which saw the Maryland Terrapin record seven tackles against Indianapolis and Kansas City in consecutive games. Furthermore, he has either forced or recovered a fumble and/or interception in each of the last three games. Finally, he is one of only four players who has registered multiple-sack games this season, having recorded two sacks against Houston (11/28). Another rookie who has played extremely well is Travis LaBoy, who who is fourth on the team in sacks with three-and-a-half (3.5). He registered two fourth quarter sacks against the Vikings when he stopped Daunte Culpepper in the Titans setback earlier in the season at Minnesota (10/24), a game which LaBoy had a season-high seven tackles. Against the Raiders last week, he was credited with two tackles and one quarterback pressure and enters this week s game against the Broncos with 25 tackles and seven quarterback pressures. DE Antwan Odom posted 21 career sacks which ranks tied for fifth on the University of Alabama s all-time list. He accounted for four tackles in the loss to Oakland but did record a half-sack in the two previous contests against Kansas City and Indianapolis. On the season, the former first-team SEC standout from Alabama has registered 34 tackles, 2.0 sacks and nine quarterback pressures. The team inserted Bo Schobel, who finished his career at Texas Christian University with 28.5 sacks, 17 of which came during his senior season, into the starting lineup for the second consecutive week when the defense took the field against the Silver and Black last week. Schobel finished the game with four tackles but has impressed several members of the coaching staff since he was taken off of the team PUP list on November 8. Two rookie cornerbacks, Michael Waddell and Rich Gardner, have seen limited action but both have picked off one pass this season and are regulars on special teams. Entering Week 15 of the season, Starks leads all rookie defensive tackles in sacks and is determined along with LaBoy to finish the regular season on a strong note as the Titans face the Broncos and Detroit Lions in the last two games of the season ROOKIE SACK LEADERS Name Team Sacks Jared Allen KC 7.0 Will Smith NO 6.0 Karlos Dansby AZ 5.0 Kendrick Udeze MIN 5.0 Randy Starks TEN 4.5 Tommy Kelly OAK 4.0 Shaun Phillips SD 4.0 Travis LaBoy TEN 3.5 Tommie Harris CHI 3.5 Gibril Wilson NYG 3.0
