Overview: Turbulence Ultimate Frisbee (TUF) Parents and Participants Ultimate Frisbee is a great sport encouraging physical fitness, sportsmanship, and teamwork, where Spirit of the Game is key. The primary focus of TUF is to provide a mechanism for students to earn their PE credits. This opportunity is through the generosity of the RAHS PTSA. The PTSA has made arrangements with the City of Tukwila to reserve field space for students use. Before and during DiscNW Ultimate seasons, the focus will be on preparing the team for games. P.E. hour monitoring will still be available for all participants. Out of season, a more flexible P.E. activity schedule will be available. All practices are co-ed, even though the fall competitions are only for boys. Girls are encouraged to attend all practices to work on skills, both individual and team, for winter and spring competition. Five levels of student participation are available: Fun, P.E. only, competitive, varsity letter, and leadership development. Each level requires an increasing time and financial commitment from the participants. Here s an overview of the 4/5 levels. Fun The fun level is for those students just wanting in on an after school activity. The fun level requires that participants pay the base activity fee, sign all PTSA waivers and sign in at all practices. P.E. The P.E. level is for those students needing an activity to satisfy their independent study P.E. requirements for graduation. Attending two practices a week should insure adequate progress towards satisfying the P.E requirements. The P.E. level requires that participants pay the base activity fee, sign all PTSA waivers, sign in at all practices and maintain their own log. For safety reasons, having a pair of cleats is required. PE CREDIT: Read CAREFULLY the RAHS P.E. contract (found in the RAHS lobby, through advisors and counselors, and in Student Handbook. Players must have the contract preapproved by school admin., and maintain an activity log. The current Handbook states that students need to have earned 1.5 PE credits by the start of their junior year. 75 hours of preapproved physical activity (such as Frisbee) earns 0.5 PE credits. We ve estimated that a full (no absences, and including pre-school practices) fall season of Ultimate Frisbee practice will provide at least 60 hours, and players on the competitive teams will accumulate additional physical activity hours. Players may supplement Frisbee practice time with another physical activity to accumulate more hours, but this must also be pre-approved. Competitive Competitive Ultimate Frisbee is varsity level commitment. Students will need to attend and maintain at least 6 hours a week of practices a week to see any game time. It is possible to do this and participate in other after school activities, as long as the player is aware of their commitments and can find the academic/sport balance. Competitive level requires that participants pay an additional fee above the base activity fee each season, sign all PTSA waivers and sign in at all practices. Addition requirements are the purchase of the appropriate equipment and clothing.

Varsity Letter Requirements for a varsity letter are even higher. Varsity letters are reserved for students in their second or more years of involvement with the team. Students will also need to maintain a 6 hour a week practice involvement. Students may fulfill these requirements and earn varsity letters at the coach s discretion. Commitment to the team Commitment to self-improvement Commitment to mentoring the newer team members 90% minimum practice attendance (with allowance for injuries) At least one year with the team Missed a maximum of one game Spirit of the Game (SOG) Participation in club committee's Academics in good standing Season Participation: Fall/Boys for Fall Drizzle Winter/Coed Spring/Girls & Coed for Spring Reign While the fall games are boys only, girls are encouraged to attend all practices, for both PE credits and for skill development.

Rules of the Game from USA Ultimate U l t i m a t e i n 1 0 S i m p l e R u l e s by Steve Courlang and Neal Dambra The Field: A rectangular shape with end zones at each end. A regulation field is 70 yards by 40 yards, with end zones 25 yards deep. Initiate Play: Each point begins with both teams lining up on the front of their respective end zone line. The defense throws ("pulls") the disc to the offense. A regulation game has seven players per team. Scoring: Each time the offense completes a pass in the defense's end zone, the offense scores a point. Play is initiated after each score. Movement of the Disc: The disc may be advanced in any direction by completing a pass to a teammate. Players may not run with the disc. The person with the disc ("thrower") has ten seconds to throw the disc. The defender guarding the thrower ("marker") counts out the stall count. Change of Possession: When a pass is not completed (e.g. out of bounds, drop, block, interception, stalled), the defense immediately takes possession of the disc and becomes the offense. Substitutions: Players not in the game may replace players in the game after a score and during an injury timeout. Non-contact: No physical contact is allowed between players. Picks and screens are also prohibited. A foul occurs when contact is made. Fouls: When a player initiates contact on another player a foul occurs. When a foul disrupts possession, the play resumes as if the possession was retained. If the player committing the foul disagrees with the foul call, the play is redone. Self-Officiating: Players are responsible for their own foul and line calls. Players resolve their own disputes. Spirit of the Game: Ultimate stresses sportsmanship and fair play. Competitive play is encouraged, but never at the expense of respect between players, adherence to the rules, and the basic joy of play. For a more comprehensive list of the rules, visit the USAU website at and find the 11 th Edition Rules in the rules tab.

Enrollment: Enrollment forms will be distributed via and available at school, and at practice. Enrollment forms and fee are due in the RAHS Office by Wednesday, September 12th. Players may try the club sport by attending practice through Monday, September 10th. Enrollment forms and fee must be submitted to continue beyond Sept. 10th. Attendance: There will be a sign-in sheet at each practice to track eligibility for games. Students are expected to sign themselves in, noting their arrival time. They should also be tracking their attendance on their own for their PE credits. Game Days: Players are encouraged to arrive at least 30 minutes prior to the beginning of each game to allow for warm-ups and to ensure that we have enough players to actually play a game. If your child cannot make it to a game, please be sure to let the coach know. Players should wear their TUF jersey, appropriate shorts, and cleats. Volunteering: We need two adults-on-site for each practice per PTSA rules. The team has one coach, and a second adult must be present at all times. Please sign up to volunteer. The district needs a background check form if you haven t already filled one out. Background check form information: Those who haven t yet completed a background check form, please click the link below, print the form and return it, with a copy of your driver s license, to the front office, in person, via kiddelivery or mail. In Part One, fill in your name and that you ll be helping the coach and volunteering with teachers as needed (leave it vague for flexibility, in case you d like to volunteer in another AHS capacity this year). Check the box that you will not be alone with students. Leave the sponsor and administrator names blank. Until you receive notice that your paperwork has been approved, you can t help at Frisbee or any school activity. Mine took less than a week after my son delivered it to the office, and I was notified about my being approved via . Fingerprinting is not necessary unless your volunteer work entails being the only adult with students. eers/volunteerdisclosure-5630f pdf How can you support the team? We love having parent participation in all TUF events. Please consider signing up for our hospitality table at games. Parents have also been instrumental in keeping the first-aid bag well stocked feel free to see what is needed.

SPIRIT OF THE GAME => Please read pages 1-2. Player and parent sign and return page 3. Excerpt from USA Ultimate s Official Rules of Ultimate: 11th Edition "The integrity of Ultimate depends on each player's responsibility to uphold the Spirit of the Game, and this responsibility should remain paramount." From Section 1. Introduction, item B. "Spirit of the Game. Ultimate relies upon a spirit of sportsmanship that places the responsibility for fair play on the player. Highly competitive play is encouraged, but never at the expense of mutual respect among competitors, adherence to the agreed upon rules, or the basic joy of play. Protection of these vital elements serves to eliminate unsportsmanlike conduct from the Ultimate field. Such actions as taunting opposing players, dangerous aggression, belligerent intimidation, intentional infractions, or other 'win-at-all-costs' behavior are contrary to the Spirit of the Game and must be avoided by all players." Spirit of the Game sets Ultimate apart from other competitive team sports. Ultimate has flourished, reaching a highly competitive level, without the use of referees. In Ultimate, the honor system works. One of the many beauties of Ultimate is how, even amid the most difficult of situations, utmost graciousness is allowed to meet that challenge head on. Ten Things You Should Know About Spirit of the Game (Editor shortened) 1. The golden rule: treat others as you would want to be treated. Spirited games result from mutual respect among opponents. Assume the best of your opponent. Give him or her the benefit of a doubt. 2. Control: SOTG (Spirit of the Game) takes real effort. SOTG is not an abstract principle. Close calls are made in tight games. Hard fouls are committed. SOTG is about how you handle yourself under pressure: how you contain your emotions, tame your temper, and modulate your voice. If you initiate or contribute to the unraveling of spirit, the concept falls apart quickly. If you act to mend things by following (1) above, the game heals itself. 3. Heckling and taunting are different. Ultimate has a long tradition of good-natured heckling. Heckles are friendly barbs, typically from nonplaying spectators. Heckling can be fun, but taunting is unspirited and wrong. Harassing remarks are NOT heckling: they are abusive taunts and not productive to SOTG. 4. SOTG is compatible with championship play. It is a fallacy to argue that the stakes are so important that some aspect of SOTG can be cast aside. Repeatedly, great teams and star players have shown that you can bring all your competitive and athletic zeal to a game without sacrificing fair play or respect for your opponent. 5. Don't "give as you got." There is no "eye for an eye." If you are wronged, you have no right to wrong someone in return. In an extreme case you may bring the issue up with a captain, Coach or tournament director. If you retaliate in kind, however, a complaint may be filed against you. You are responsible for you. 6. Breathe. After a hard foul, close call, or disputed play, step back, pause and take a deep breath. By giving yourself a bit of time and space, you will gain enough perspective to compose yourself and concentrate

on the facts involved in the dispute. Your restraint will induce a more restrained response from your opponent. 7. When you do the right thing, people notice. When you turn the other cheek, you know you've done the right thing. You may not hear praise, there may be no standing ovation, but people do notice. Eventually, their respect for you and their appreciation of the game will grow. 8. Be generous with praise. Compliment an opponent on a good catch. Remark to a teammate that you admire his honesty in calling himself out of bounds. Look players in the eye and congratulate them when you shake their hands after a game. These small acts boost spirit. 9. Impressions linger. Your actions may be remembered for a long time and can inspire better conduct in others. A good first encounter with an impressionable young player can have considerable long term positive impact. 10. Have fun. Below is a rating system DiscNW uses after their games called the Spirit Rating. Points for scoring, plus Spirit rating come together to establish league standing, and are posted on the web site. Spirit Ranking breaks a tie. Rating Interpretation 7 We loved playing this team! Their spirit was incredible, their cheer rocked and they were very knowledgeable about the rules or at least willing to learn. We would love to play them again! 6 This team was fun, exhibited good spirit and was knowledgeable about the rules or expressed an interest in learning. 5 This team exhibited good spirit overall. We enjoyed playing against almost all of the players. The team was fairly knowledgeable about the rules. 4 Our team enjoyed playing against some of their players. Their team had a decent knowledge of the rules and exhibited some good spirit and good sportsmanship. 3 Our team only enjoyed playing against a few of our opponents. There was a lack of good spirit and good sportsmanship and a lack of knowledge of the rules of the game or willingness to learn. 2 Our team did not enjoy the game. Our opponents lacked knowledge of the rules or exhibited a disregard for the rules along with some dangerous plays. 1 No one on my team enjoyed this game. Our opponents exhibited negative sportsmanship along with many dangerous plays. We would not like to play this team again unless they are willing to work on their spirit. This team has the worst spirit I've ever seen.
