2 Washington and lee ATHLETICS AT W&L Washington and Lee University provides its students with a unique athletic program that allows them to pursue athletic excellence without sacrificing their educational experience. W&L follows the NCAA Division III guidelines of awarding financial aid based only on family need and academic merit. The result is a strong, diverse program in which participants are motivated by their love of the game and their desire to excel. Over the years W&L students have been impressive on and off the playing fields. 4 Washington and lee KENNETH P. RUSCIO, UNIVERSITY PRESIDENT Ken Ruscio officially began his duties as the University's 26th president in July Ruscio earned a B.A. in politics from Washington and Lee in 1976 and earned an M.P.A. and Ph.D. from Syracuse University's Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs in 1978 and 1983, respectively. Ruscio served as a professor of politics, associate dean of the Williams School of Commerce, Economics, and Politics, and dean of freshmen at W&L from 1987 until 2002, when he became the dean of the Jepson School of Leadership Studies at the University of Richmond. Ruscio has also taught at Worcester Polytechnic Institute and Kansas University and was a postdoctoral research scholar at UCLA. He recently completed his second term as national president of Omicron Delta Kappa, a national leadership society begun at W&L in 1914 that now has chapters at over 300 campuses. He has led and served on dozens of academic, professional and civic committees. Ruscio is married to the former Kimberley O'Donnell of New York. They have a son, Matt, age 17. CHUCK O'CONNELL, INTERIM ATHLETIC DIRECTOR JAN HATHORN, ATHLETIC DIRECTOR Jan Hathorn was named as Washington and Lee's Director of Athletics in April of 2007 and began her appointment as the seventh director in the University's history in July. Hathorn is no stranger to W&L, having served as the women's lacrosse coach for 19 seasons and as the women's soccer coach for 14 seasons. She had also been an assistant athletic director and the University's Director of Physical Education since Hathorn arrived at W&L in the fall of 1987 and was charged with beginning the school's women's soccer and lacrosse programs. She guided the soccer team to a (.591) record from and was named the ODAC Coach of the Year twice. In lacrosse, Hathorn turned W&L into one of the nation's elite programs, guiding the Generals to a (.705) record from Her teams produced 17 winning seasons, nine ODAC titles and eight NCAA Tournament berths, and she was named the ODAC Coach of the Year nine times, including in each of her final five years. Hathorn's 277 career wins ( ) rank among the most in the history of collegiate women's lacrosse. Before arriving at W&L, Hathorn spent five years at Denison University, where she coached the lacrosse team to a overall record and five conference titles. Her 1985, 1986, and 1987 teams finished eighth in the NCAA Division III National Tournament and she was named the NCAC Coach of the Year in Hathorn earned a B.A. in physical education from the State University of New York at Cortland in 1982 and a M.A. in physical education from Ohio State University in Hathorn makes her home in Lexington, where she is active in the community. 2

5 GENERALS BASKETBALL ABOUT THE UNIVERSITY WASHINGTON and LEE UNIVER- SITY a small, private, liberal arts college, is the ninth oldest institution of higher education in America. Founded in 1749, W&L prides itself on the characteristics that have earned its reputation as a place unique and apart in the national educational scene. The school s name comes from two of America s great leaders who saved W&L in times of need. George Washington saved then Liberty Hall Academy from financial ruin in 1796 when he gave the school its first major endowment gift $20,000 worth of James River Canal stock. The donation at the time the largest to any educational institution continues today as part of the endowment. Robert E. Lee saved then Washington College from obscurity after the Civil War by serving as its innovative president from 1865 until his death in 1870, and instituting such programs as the School of Law, the nation s first school of journalism, and the revered Honor System that continues to play a major role in W&L life. More than 95 percent of W&L s full-time faculty members hold doctorate or other terminal degrees, and all of them are, first and foremost, teachers. And with an average class size of just 16, W&L students clearly benefit from that expertise. 6 Washington and lee ADAM HUTCHINSON, HEAD COACH Adam Hutchinson is in his fifth season as head basketball coach at Washington and Lee. Hutchinson guided the Generals to an overall record during the season, the program's best record since Additionally, he mentored Greg Bienemann to First Team All-ODAC honors, a first for a General in over a decade. Hutchinson came to Washington and Lee after spending two seasons as the head coach at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. In those two seasons, he led the Spartans to a overall record while rebuilding the program. His initial recruiting class included eight players, most notably Carson Oren, the 2003 University Athletic Association Rookie of the Year. Prior to CWRU, Hutchinson was the head coach at Stevens Institute of Technology from , compiling a overall mark. His second season resulted in a overall record, a five-game improvement over his first campaign. Hutchinson began his collegiate coaching career in 1994 as an assistant coach at his alma mater, Amherst College. In his two seasons with the Lord Jeffs, he was responsible for recruiting the school's second all-time leading scorer in All-American Jamal Wilson and helping lead the team to the NCAA Division III Elite Eight. In 1996, Hutchinson assumed the role of player and coach with the Cardiff Clippers of the English National Basketball League before spending two seasons as an assistant coach at Emory University. Originally a walk-on player at Amherst, Hutchinson started two seasons at guard in leading the Lord Jeffs to the ECAC Tournament each year. He was named team captain as a senior. Hutchinson graduated from Amherst in 1993 with a bachelor of arts in African- American studies and earned his master of science in sport management from the University of Massachusetts-Amherst in He and his wife, Erin, have two sons, Jason and Donald. 4

7 GENERALS BASKETBALL SEAN GRANT, ASSISTANT COACH Sean Grant is in his second season as an assistant basketball coach at W&L. Grant's first season resulted in the Generals posting an overall record, the program's best mark in 16 years. Grant came to W&L from Connecticut College where he served as an assistant coach from During his time with the Camels, Grant helped engineer an eight-game improvement from his first season and a berth to the NESCAC Tournament for the first time since Additionally, he also helped develop the NESCAC Co-Rookie of the Year in 2005 and the Camels ranked among the Division III leaders in field goal percentage and three-point field goal percentage his final season. Prior to joining Conn College, Grant served as an assistant basketball coach at NYU from , helping the Violets to a 21-7 record and a berth in the ECAC Championship game in During this time, Grant was also the head junior varsity coach. A 2002 NYU graduate with a degree in early childhood and elementary education, Grant was a four-year member of the men's basketball program and a recipient of the school's scholar-athlete award. At W&L, Grant is responsible for coordinating recruiting, player development and game preparation. 5

8 Washington and lee SEASON OUTLOOK From an outside perspective, an season does not seem like much to build on. However, to those that know the Washington and Lee basketball program, the team's record was very significant. The Generals' 11 wins were the most for the program in 16 years and that total could have easily been more if not for seven losses by six points or less. Additionally, five of the 14 losses were to teams that advanced to the NCAA "Elite Eight" last season. All of the experience that comes with close wins, close losses and playing top-notch competition has Hutchinson excited to see what his team can accomplish. With four starters and 12 letterwinners returning, the onus is now shared by the players -- particularly the captains -- to take this team where it wants to go. "This is really exciting," said Hutchinson about the experience he returns. "This is the first time since I've been a coach that I have a team of experienced guys who can take it upon themselves to team each other. I'm interested to see how much outcome that can affect." Senior forwards Greg Bienemann (6-foot-7) and Femi Kusimo (6-foot-5), and junior guard Isaiah Goodman (5-foot-10) will serve as the team captains and, according to Hutchinson, they are already making a difference. "This is a team and there are no personal agendas," noted Hutchinson. "Everybody seems willing to do the dirty work for each other and are more willing to share in the glorified tasks with each other. It all has to do with the juniors and seniors. I don't know if it's what they're gone through or if it's just who they are, but we as coaches haven't had to be in their ears about playing hard -- they are demanding that of each other." Hutchinson sees his team as a balanced group, but from the outside it all appears to start with Bienemann, who garnered First Team All-ODAC honors after averaging 17.8 points and 6.8 rebounds per game last winter. He had eight games of 20 points or more and shot better than 56 percent from the floor. "I think that Greg is poised to have another big year," said Hutchinson. "He was terrific as a junior and he has only gotten bigger and stronger this year." Kusimo is expected to start along-side Bienemann at power forward again this season. He set a school record for field goal percentage (.615) last season, while averaging 10.8 points and 5.3 rebounds per outing. "Femi is stronger than he has ever been and he looks healthy," noted Hutchinson. "He is an excellent passer, runs the floor well and is in good shape. I think he is also poised to have an outstanding senior season." Hutchinson has a few options in the post behind Bienemann and Kusimo and expects to receive contributions from juniors Ryan Owens (6-foot-5) and Ben Heller (6-foot-6), along with sophomores Ben Goetsch (6-foot-5) and Andrew Payne (6-foot-4). Owens saw double-digit minutes in each of the first four games of last season, but saw his playing time dip because of a mid-season injury. He averaged 2.7 points and 1.7 rebounds per game over nine contests. "Ryan is a big, strong, energetic guy," said Hutchinson. "He has shown flashes over the past two seasons and he seems committed to getting it all together this fall." Heller is nursing his way back after shoulder surgery in the off-season. He played in all 25 games last season, averaging 3.1 points and 2.0 rebounds per game. "Hopefully Ben can be back as soon as possible," stated Hutchinson. "He has shown flashes of what Greg (Bienemann) can do, but he needs to show the same motor -- and coming off surgery, that is going to be a challenge for him." 6

9 GENERALS BASKETBALL Goetsch and Payne saw their share of injuries last season, but both return healthy and ready to make an impact. Goetsch played in 11 games and averaged 0.8 points and 0.7 rebounds per game, while Payne played in the first four games before back surgery ended his freshman campaign. He averaged 1.5 points and 1.5 rebounds before being lost for the season. "Ben has played pretty well this fall," said Hutchinson. "He is a terrific shooter and a big, strong player. He has shown the ability to make improvements defensively that we needed. Andrew is a super intense guy and a scrappy player. With his back healthy, he is much more effective than last year and can play more minutes." The Generals' backcourt is not as accomplished as the frontcourt, but Hutchinson believes that his guards will make significant contributions this season. Goodman is slated to start at the point, while junior Chris McHugh (6-foot-1) appears to have a legup at shooting guard. Sophomore Craig Sauers (6-foot-3) will also be in the mix, while freshmen Jason Cimino (5-foot-10), Custis Proctor (5-foot-11) and Kevin Dyer (5-foot-9) will see action at the point and shooting guard positions. Sophomore Bena Tshishiku (5-foot-8) may figure in, but has been limited due to injury. "Isaiah is a terrific defender and he has spent a lot of time in the off-season working on his shot," said Hutchinson. "Chris is a heady player that had a positive assist-to-turnover ratio last season and he has the leaping ability to get his shot off at any time." Hutchinson added that Sauers has been "practicing great and shooting the ball well", while his trio of freshman guards have been impressive. "Jason is a smart basketball player -- a true point guard with quickness defensively and an unselfish attitude," noted Hutchinson. "Custis is a tough, hard-nosed kid that plays excellent defense and Kevin is a good on the ball defender and a good shooter from the perimeter." Hutchinson believes the wings are his most versatile group and they are led by junior forward Kirk Jones (6-foot-4). Sophomore Zac White (6-foot-6) and freshman Durk Stanton (6-foot-3) will also see plenty of time. Jones started all 25 games last season, averaging 6.9 points and 3.0 rebounds per game. He also drilled 32 threepointers, the second-most on the team. "Kirk is a tough, competitive kid that will do whatever you need him to do," said Hutchinson. "He's played nearly every position for us and played them well." White is an extremely athletic player that averaged 5.1 points and 1.9 rebounds last winter. "Zac has a tremendous upside," said Hutchinson. "He is athletic, can shoot the ball well and he makes defensive plays that can startle you." Hutchinson called Stanton "a scorer, someone who has a real knack for putting the ball in the basket." When asked to assess his team heading into the season, Hutchinson noted that his team was balanced, but needs to continue the improvement shown over the past few seasons. "We've been pretty good in a lot of areas, but we need to improve in every area as well," Hutchinson lamented. "Our energy level is up and the competitiveness in practice is much better this season and that is a testament to our leadership. I think if we limit our turnovers, move the ball quickly, play good defense and rebound, then we will put ourselves in a position to accomplish a lot of things." 7

22 Washington and lee OLD DOMINION ATHLETIC CONFERENCE The ODAC is one of the nation's largest NCAA Division III leagues, featuring championships in 22 sports and a membership of 14 schools. The ODAC hosts three NCAA championships each year, including the NCAA Division III Final Four which is played at the Salem Civic Center. The league will also host NCAA Division III championships in football and softball. The ODAC was formed on May 18, 1975 as the Virginia College Conference and began operations in September of (The name change to ODAC became effective January 1, 1976). Charter members were eight colleges located in the Commonwealth of Virginia: Bridgewater College, Eastern Mennonite University, Emory & Henry College, Hampden- Sydney College, Randolph-Macon College, Roanoke College and W&L. From its initial year of operation through the academic year, the ODAC sponsored competition in 10 men's varsity sports. Women's sports were added prior to the school year. The six newest members of the ODAC are Hollins College (1982), Randolph College (1982), Sweet Briar College (1982), Virginia Wesleyan College (1988), Guilford College (1990), and Catholic University (1999). 32 Washington and lee W&L BASKETBALL HISTORY Since the Blue and White first tipped off in 1906, basketball has been one of the most successful sports at Washington and Lee. The school has also produced a number of outstanding players. The first W&L great on the hardwood was Harry (Cy) Young who was named to the Helm Foundation's 1917 All-America team. Young led the Generals to a perfect 13-0 record that season. W&L enjoyed numerous winning seasons over the next decade and a half, but it wasn't until Young returned as a coach Jay Handlan that W&L won a championship. The Generals won the 1934 Southern Conference championship with a narrow win over Duke. That would prove to the first of four straight trips to the Southern Conference finals for W&L. The Blue Comets, as the W&L basketball teams of the late 1930s were called, brought home a second Southern Conference title in 1937 by beating North Carolina The victory avenged losses to the Tar Heels in each of the previous two championships. Those teams were led by the All-American duo of Norm Iler and Bob Spessard. Iler was a three-time All-Southern guard and earned All-America honors in Spessard was also a three-time All-Southern basketball player and the high-scoring center was an All-American in Spessard was the first player in school history to reach 1,000 career points. The W&L teams of the late 1940s and early 1950s didn't win often, but featured one of the nation's most explosive scorers in Jay Handlan. Handlan finished in the top 16 in the nation in scoring every year and ended his career with 2,002 points. At the time he was just the third player in collegiate history to reach 2,000 career points. Handlan still holds seven school records, including most points in a game - a 66-point performance against Furman in W&L's last years in the Southern Conference came in the late 1950s and provided W&L with one of its greatest teams. The University decided to abolish the practice of awarding scholarships in 1954, but honored those that had already been awarded. The team included five scholarship players who played almost all of the minutes that year. The team became known as the "Five-Star Generals." Dom Flora, Lee Marshall, Barry Storick, Frank Hoss and Barclay Smith led the team to a 20-7 finish, including a loss to West Virginia and its star "Hot Rod" Hundley in the finals of the Southern Conference tournament. It was the first time a W&L team won 20 games in a season. Marshall and Flora were named to numerous all-star teams with Marshall averaging 22.0 points a game and Flora Flora had one more year left and made it one to remember even though the Generals finished just Flora earned All-America honors averaging 25.4 points a game. Flora finished his career with 2,310 points, still the school record. 30

33 GENERALS BASKETBALL That season was the first of nine straight losing seasons. W&L turned it around in with a 20-5 record under third-year coach Verne Canfield. Beginning with the season the Generals won four of five College Athletic Conference championships. Those teams were led by the duo of Mel Cartwright and Mike Neer. Cartwright became the first General since Jay Handlan to lead the team in scoring four straight years. Neer made the most of a three-year career in Lexington by scoring 1,289 points and grabbing 1,003 rebounds, including a school-record 403 in Cartwright and Neer are the only two players in school history to reach both 1,000 career points and rebounds. W&L had established itself as one of the top small college programs in the nation and the Generals were invited to the first-ever Division III national tournament in The Generals went just that year, but defeated Navy and lost to Virginia by just a count. The Generals were bounced from the tournament by Glassboro State, the eventual runner-up. Canfield guided the Generals back to the NCAA tourney just two years later when the squad set a school-record with 23 wins. W&L, led by first-year starter Pat Dennis' 21.7 points a game, finished the year ranked 4th in Division III. Once again the Generals were eliminated in the first round. The following year Dennis set a school record with his 700 points, averaging 25.0 points a game. W&L finished 22-6 and defeated Jersey City in the opening round of the tourney before losing to Kean in the championship game of the South Atlantic Regional. W&L's most recent trip to the tourney came in with an unlikely group. After finishing the regular season with just an record, W&L won its third Old Dominion Athletic Conference championship in four years to qualify for the NCAAs. In the ODAC tourney W&L beat Emory & Henry 56-50, top-seeded Eastern Mennonite and Hampden-Sydney on Rob Smitherman's 18-foot jump shot at the buzzer. W&L was eliminated in the opening round of the NCAA tourney. W&L's last championship was the ODAC regular season title in when a group of sophomores led by Chris Jacobs, Mike Holton and Ed Hart were the key forces. All three of those players finished their careers with over 1,000 points. 59 GENERALS BASKETBALL WARNER CENTER Washington and Lee plays its home basketball games in the 1,500-seat J.W. Warner Center, a five-story athletic complex completed in The first game in the new facility was played before a packed house against the University of Virginia on December 1, 1971 and the building was officially dedicated as the Warner Center on October 21, The gymnasium has served as the host site for two NCAA regional basketball tournaments and one NCAA regional wrestling tournament. The athletic complex, named for former W&L trustee Jonathan Westervelt Warner (W&L '40), also features a six-lane swimming pool; team rooms for W&L sports teams; the Doremus Gymnasium; a fully-equipped weight room and fitness center that was completed in 2002; an excellent athletic training facility; handball, racquetball and squash courts; a baseball batting cage; an equipment room and offices for coaches and administrators. Since beginning play in the Warner Center in , the Generals have won over 60 percent of their home games with a record of W&L went a perfect 14-0 at home during the season.
