2 LIONS THANKSGIVING DAY TRADITION It was, legend says, a typically colorful, probably chilly, November day in 1622 that Pilgrims and Native Americans celebrated the new world s bounty with a sumptuous feast. They sat together at Plymouth Plantation (they spelled it Plimouth) in Massachusetts, gave thanks for the goodness set before them, then dined on pumpkin pie, sweet potatoes, maize, cranberry sauce, turkey and who knows what else. Actually, fish was just as predominant a staple. And history books say pumpkin pie really debuted a year later. But regardless of the accuracy of the details, that s how Thanksgiving Day is seen by Americans -- except Detroiters. They may have most of the same images as everyone else, but with a new twist that began in That s when Detroiters and their outstate Michigan compatriots found themselves at the dawn of an unplanned behavior modification, courtesy of George A. Dick Richards, owner of the city s new entry in the National Football League: The Detroit Lions. Larry Paladino, Lions Pride, 1993 Four generations of Detroiters have been a proud part of the American celebration of Thanksgiving. The relationship between Detroit and Thanksgiving dates back to 1934 when owner G.A. Richards scheduled a holiday contest between his fi rst-year Lions and the Chicago Bears. Some 80 years later, fans throughout the State of Michigan have transformed an annual holiday event into the single greatest tradition in the history of American professional team sports. Indeed, if football is America s passion, Thanksgiving football is Detroit s passion. The game was the brainchild of Richards, the first owner of the Detroit Lions. Richards had purchased the team in 1934 and moved the club from Portsmouth, Ohio to the Motor City. The Lions were the new kids in town and had taken a backseat to the baseball Tigers. Despite the fact the Lions had lost only one game prior to Thanksgiving in 1934, the season s largest crowd had been just 15,000. The opponent in 1934 was the undefeated, defending World Champion Chicago Bears. The game would determine the champion of the Western Division. Richards had convinced the NBC Radio Network to carry the game coast-to-coast (94 stations) and additionally, an estimated 26,000 fans jammed into the University of Detroit Stadium while thousands more disappointed fans were turned away. The game was the NFL's first on a national broadcast. In 2009, the Lions Thanksgiving Day game against Green Bay marked the NFL s 75th anniversary of the fi rst NFL national game broadcast. Graham McNamee was the announcer for NBC Radio for that historic game in Despite two Ace Gutowsky touchdowns, the Bears won the inaugural game 19-16, but a classic was born. Since 1934, 73 games have been played with the Lions holding a (.434) record in the series. And each game, in its own way, continues to bring back memories of Thanksgiving, not only to Lions fans, but to football fans across the nation. The 2014 schedule features the Lions 75th Thanksgiving Day Classic Thursday, November 27 at 12:30 p.m. ET vs. the Chicago Bears. This year s game marks the 16th meeting between Detroit and Chicago on Thanksgiving and the first time since The Bears hold the all-time edge in the series, 8-7-0, with the Lions taking the most recent matchup, 21-7, in THANKSGIVING DAY FACTS The series began with a loss to the Chicago Bears on November 29, A total of 74 games have been played with the Lions owning a record in the annual holiday classic. More than 4 million fans have witnessed the Lions 74 Thanksgiving Day games. The total attendance for the first 74 games is 4,179,015, an average of 56,473 fans per game. The Lions have played 24 different teams since the fi rst Thanksgiving Day game. The most common opponent has been the Green Bay Packers, who the Lions played in 2013 for the 21st time in the Thanksgiving series. Their second most common opponent is the Chicago Bears (15 times). The two highest scoring games were a Packers win in 1986 and a Detroit romp over Green Bay in The lowest scoring game was a 12-0 Philadelphia win in the 1968 Mud Bowl. Eleven times in the series has a game been decided by three points or less, with the Lions record standing at in those meetings. The most lopsided game was a 45-3 Lions win over Pittsburgh in Seven shutouts have been recorded, but only one by the Lions (20-0 over the Bears in 1979). Three Thanksgiving Day games have gone into overtime. The fi rst came in 1980 when the Bears David Williams returned the opening kickoff of OT for a 95-yard touchdown. At the time, the game marked the shortest overtime game in NFL history (21 seconds). The second overtime game occurred in 1998 when the Lions defeated the Steelers on a 42- yard Jason Hanson fi eld goal in a game that will be remembered for the controversial coin toss before overtime began. The third occurred against the Houston Texans in 2012 in a game categorized by back-and-forth possessions and two missed fi eld goals from each side, with Houston K Shayne Graham pulling out a 32-yarder for the win. 5 A TRIBUTE TO MR. FORD William Clay Ford ( ) Detroit Lions Owner and Chairman, Beginning Week 1 this season, the Detroit Lions introduced a special jersey patch displaying the letters WCF in honor of the franchise s late owner, Mr. William Clay Ford. The patch will appear on the left shoulder of all Lions players jerseys for the 2014 season as a tribute to one of the NFL s original statesmen. Mr. Ford passed away on March 9 at the age of 88 and owned and directed the Lions franchise during a span of 50 years. Through fi ve decades, his unwavering leadership provided stability to an organization, its fans and the community when most professional sports franchises cycled through numerous ownership changes and franchise moves. Mr. Ford remained steadfastly committed to ensuring the Lions were always a vital component to the Detroit community and the state of Michigan. THE NFL REMEMBERS MR. FORD NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell: For fi ve decades, Mr. Ford s passion for the Lions, Detroit, and the NFL was the foundation of one of the NFL s historic franchises. As an NFL owner, Mr. Ford helped bring the NFL through enormous periods of change and growth, always guided by his commitment to what was best for the NFL and his beloved Lions. All of us in the NFL extend our heartfelt sympathy to Mr. Ford s wife Martha, Bill Ford, Jr. and the entire Ford family. Dallas Cowboys Owner Jerry Jones: I ve literally been at owners (meetings) when an owner came up and met Mr. Ford for the fi rst time, and the owner was a new owner in the NFL. I was standing right with him and the owner talked about how his granddad had been a Ford dealer in Texas, in the depths of Texas, and he literally teared up when he talked about what Ford, what the brand and what the individuals stood for and had stood for in his evolving to the point that he could buy an NFL football team. He actually teared up and showed that kind of emotion, and that was (former Minnesota Vikings owner) Red McCombs. Late Buffalo Bills Owner Ralph Wilson, Jr: I was deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Bill Ford. He was a man of great integrity who loved his family and his Lions. Bill was well respected within our league as well as the city of Detroit and his contributions to both were numerous. We have all lost a good friend with his passing. My deepest sympathies and condolences go out to his family and many friends. Lions Hall of Fame TE and Assistant Director of Pro Personnel Charlie Sanders: I ve always just enjoyed being around him just to watch him laugh. He was a cheerful owner, you know, upbeat, always positive. I have a lot of memories, but when I think of him I just think of a man that was very fair and enjoyed people and enjoyed people that had the same desires that he had. Most of those are centered around the Detroit Lions organization. Former Lions Herman Moore: Every single game that he was in the locker room, we at least spoke, or he would be in the locker room. I appreciated that from our owner. That s a real moment that fans don t know about the commitment that he would show to us players. GAME INFORMATION

6 WELCOME, HEAD COACH JIM CALDWELL JIM CALDWELL Head Coach Years with Lions: 1 Years as NFL Head Coach: 4 Years in NFL: 14 As the Lions new head coach, Jim Caldwell brings 37 years of coaching experience to Detroit, including 13 previous years in the NFL and 24 years on the college level. Two Super Bowl titles and three appearances in the NFL s championship game highlight his coaching resume, which includes leading the Indianapolis Colts to an AFC Championship and a berth in Super Bowl XLVI as head coach following the 2009 season. COACHING OVERVIEW Hired as head coach for the Detroit Lions January 14, Coached in three Super Bowls with Indianapolis (XLI and XLIV) and Baltimore (XLVII) and won two Super Bowl titles (Indianapolis and Baltimore). In fi rst year as head coach for Indianapolis (2009), he won the AFC Championship and led the franchise to Super Bowl XLIV. He became the fi rst NFL coach to win his fi rst 14 games and the fi fth rookie head coach to reach the Super Bowl. One of four head coaches to produce 24+ regular-season wins and a Super Bowl berth in their fi rst two career seasons as head coach. Holds a (.542) regular-season record in three seasons as an NFL head coach, including two seasons with at least 10 wins. Led the Colts to two consecutive AFC South division titles in 2009 and In eight of the 10 seasons Caldwell coached in Indianapolis, the Colts ranked in the Top-10 in total offense eight times and six times in the Top-5. From , Caldwell was the Colts quarterbacks coach and was also promoted to assistant head coach and associate head coach during that time. He worked closely with QB Peyton Manning and the team s quarterbacks. During that span, Indianapolis set NFL records with seven consecutive seasons fi nishing with 11+ wins (6, Dallas ) and 12+ victories (4, Dallas, ). Two of his quarterbacks, Manning (Super Bowl XLI) and Ravens QB Joe Flacco (Super Bowl XLVII) were named Super Bowl MVPs following their teams respective championship runs. Led the Ravens offense to a 5-2 record after taking over as offensive coordinator late in the 2012 season as the team averaged yards per game during that span. ASSEMBLING HIS TEAM In his fi rst season in Detroit, Caldwell wasted no time putting together his coaching staff. Headlining that search were the additions of defensive coordinator Teryl Austin and offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi, each of whom have won a Super Bowl with Baltimore and New Orleans, respectively. Combined, six of the 10 new Lions assistant coaches have won a Super Bowl championship. NEW LIONS COACHES: Teryl Austin (Defensive Coordinator), Jim Bob Cooter (Quarterbacks), Devin Fitzsimmons (Assistant Special Teams), Joe Lombardi (Offensive Coordinator), Tony Oden (Defensive Backs/Cornerbacks), Robert Prince (Wide Receivers), Ron Prince (Assistant Head Coach/ Tight Ends), Matt Raich (Defensive Quality Control), Bill Sheridan (Linebackers), Alan Williams (Defensive Backs/ Safeties) RETAINED LIONS COACHES: Jason Arapoff (Coordinator of Physical Development), John Bonamego (Special Teams Coordinator), Gunther Cunningham (Senior Coaching Assistant), Terry Heffernan (Offensive Quality Control) Bobby Johnson (Assistant Offensive Line), Kris Kocurek (Defensive Line), Curtis Modkins (Running Backs) Ted Rath (Assistant Strength and Conditioning), Evan Rothstein (Special Projects), Jeremiah Washburn (Offensive Line), Jim Washburn (Defensive Line) LIONS COACHES FIRST NINE GAMES With a win in Week 10, Caldwell earned the most wins through nine games for a Lions head coach in his first season with the club since the team moved to Detroit in He surpassed the six wins through nine games garnered by Dutch Clark in 1937 (6-3), Gus Henderson in 1939 (6-3) and Buddy Parker in 1951 (6-2-1). Since the franchise originally started in Portsmouth (Ohio) in 1930, Caldwell s 7-2 record is second-best for a Lions head coach in his fi rst year with the club behind Potsy Clark in 1931 (8-1) when the team was the Portsmouth Spartans. For Caldwell, this marks the third time in his four seasons as an NFL head coach that he won six or more games in the fi rst nine games of the season (9-0, 2009; 6-3, 2010). He ll lead by making people accountable and by being a role model on and off the fi eld. And with his attention to detail and history of developing quarterbacks, (Matthew) Stafford is going to flourish just like Peyton Manning did with us in Indianapolis. Baltimore Ravens General Manager Ozzie Newsome: I believe it would be difficult to fi nd anyone with the Ravens who is more respected than Jim Caldwell. That includes players, coaches and other staff members. He earned that because of the person he is and his extensive knowledge about football, including the keys to winning and his ability to teach all of that. Personally, it is a privilege to know him, and it was an honor to work with him. GAME INFORMATION

I mean you don t play well, that s what happens. You don t play well defensively, at the start. We didn t play well offensively. We had our shots and didn t come up with a couple plays. We had an opportunity to make [plays]. Kicking fi eld goals, like I mentioned there; they were scoring touchdowns. It is going to make it a tough night. On the struggles offensively: One of the things you see on offense is that over time I think we moved the ball pretty well. And we had opportunities to catch balls in the end zone. We didn t make plays and when you don t make plays, it obviously looks like you are inept in that regard. So, you know, we were in position, I think, to make some of those, but just didn t come up with them. On looking at the big picture of the NFC North: I m not worried about big picture, to be honest with you. You know, I m worried about our next game, and we ll deal with the big picture later on. You know, get out there and play, and we ll add them up at the end. On what the Patriots did well: Well, that s a good football team. Obviously that s what I meant when I said usually there s a bright spot we can talk about at least when you come into the room. We weren t able to do so today. They were able to move the ball, score touchdowns on us and we got a little settled down there for a while right after the half, but they still were able to handle us pretty well. On if he felt the team was conservative in the first half: You have to take each situation, you know, the way it bears out. Early on in the game, you know, go for it on fourth down in that situation they put us in. What was it? 7-6 or 7-tonothing at that time or something? You know, you ve got to take the points in that situation. You know, I think that s a non-story. Second half, obviously, we ended up going for it a couple times. One time we kicked a fi eld goal because we were fourth-and-14 and that s pretty obvious. And then the other times we felt like we better go for it because of the fact that we were running out of time, [out] of possessions, and you may not get it back. So that s kind of how those things play out. So, conservative, I wouldn t say that. QB MATTHEW STAFFORD On not capitalizing against New England: I think we missed some opportunities to make some big plays, got behind the chains a couple times, some untimely penalties, a couple sacks, a couple negative plays. So, [we] threw the ball a decent amount in the fi rst half, didn t come away with touchdowns. That s big when you play a team like that. On finding consistency on offense: We ve just got to fi nd a way to catch some momentum, like you said. We moved the ball good on the fi rst drive and didn t get a conversion on that third down and kicked a fi eld goal. Had a chance, I don t know if it was the second or the third drive, fi rst-and-goal and don t get it in, had some missed opportunities there as well, you know. And then we kicked the ball off and they return it back down to the ten or whatever it was and, you know, you play a good team like New England, the whole team has to play well, you know, and we didn t. GAME INFORMATION

9 On the mistakes made against the Patriots: You know, any time you have mistakes, doesn t matter what they are, they re going to cost you. Especially on the offensive side of the ball, you have to have everybody keyed in, playing good football together. And, you know, that s something at times we had a whole lot of today and moved the ball great and had some big plays, and then other times a thing here or there may have derailed us. CALVIN JOHNSON On the Patriots secondary: They did well in all three phases and when it was our turn, we didn t do the same. They had a good performance today all around and we didn t bring our A game. Obviously they have [Darelle] Revis and they have [Brandon] Browner and they are a good team overall. On the overall performance against New England and moving forward: We didn t score any touchdowns and it defi nitely wasn t our best. I am not concerned we have fi ve or six games to go in the regular season. We still have time to get things going. We are still in the driver s seat and we have to turn things around. GOLDEN TATE On matching up with Patriots CB Darrelle Revis: He is a good player, still very talented, still in my mind one of the best to play the game. Obviously, he and his team got the better of us. I think he did a good job; they had a great game plan to limit myself and CJ [Calvin Johnson]. Thankfully we have a short week, and we re going to have a chance to get this one out of our system quickly. This was embarrassing, we ve got to chalk it up and have a shortterm memory. That s kind of the most important thing, not to lose our swagger, not to lose our confi dence. We have to come out on a mission to come out and take it out on our next opponent which happens to be Chicago who is also another good team. On turning the offense around: As a receiver I have to be accountable. I need to do what I need to do to get better. Some way or another we all have to do better. We just have to fi nd a way. We don t know what it is, but we ve got to fi gure it out real soon. We re not discouraged. C DOMINIC RAIOLA On what he thinks is missing from the team: We just didn t fi nish and they were scoring touchdowns. It just comes down to making plays. On how he felt after losing to another top team in the league: I don t know how you can call yourself a competitor if you are going to chalk it up and say we just aren t good enough. You shouldn t be in this game if you think like that. I don t look at it like that. There is stuff we could have done better, period. S GLOVER QUIN On the Lions defense and Tom Brady finding open space: I don t know what exactly was going on. We have to look at the fi lm to see exactly what was going on, but they do a great job of scheming and Tom Brady does a great job of fi nding mismatches in whatever the coverage dictates. He does a great job of getting guys in great routes that are hard to cover based on the coverage that you re in, so you ve got to tip your hat to him. On second half adjustments and the interception against New England: I think we just kind of settled down a little bit. We just went right at them and just stopped [them]. A lot of stuff we were doing in the fi rst half was just I think we ran a few calls in the second half just to make them beat us and not [let] us beat ourselves with some miscommunication or anything like that. We just got outplayed today and they beat us. LB DEANDRE LEVY On the Lions defensive game against New England: We blew a lot of coverage. They sped up the tempo a bit and I think we lost our composure. The pace is something we worked on this week. We narrowed down some of the calls and some of the language. We just lost our composure for a good stretch and they scored three straight times on us. On fatigue playing a factor: I don t think it was any fatigue factor, I just think it was just miscommunication. We got over excited because of the pace and the tempo and got ourselves out of whack. We blew coverage on simple things, myself included. We just have to do a better job of being composed. On tightening things up in the second half: This past month it has kind of been out story. There was a stretch where we play great games and we are putting up 21 points and we haven t done that in the last three or four games. We need to fi nd a way to start games faster and come out with a better tempo. DE GEORGE JOHNSON On the loss to New England: We ll have to go back and fi nd out what we did wrong, fi nd out where we can do better. We ve got a short week like you said; we ve got to get this taste out of our mouth as fast as we can. So, that is the only thing we can really do. That was a really good team to play against, we ve got to play better and they played great. GAME INFORMATION

His 58 yards against the Patriots (11/23) moved his career average to 86.9 yards per game (9,906). 100 Golden Tate registered 154 yards vs. New Orleans (10/19), 151 yards at Atlanta (10/26) and 109 vs. Miami (11/9), marking the fi rst time in his career he has registered 100+-yards in three-straight games. 120 In the team s comeback victory in Week 8 at Atlanta (10/26), Stafford threw two touchdown passes and reached 120 for his career, surpassing Hall of Fame QB Bobby Layne (118) for the most career passing touchdowns in franchise history. His current total stands at Tate leads the League in third-down receiving yards with 464, as well as third-down receptions with In his return after missing three games due to injury, Johnson grabbed seven receptions for 113 yards and one touchdown against the Dolphins (11/9). He moved his career total to 601 and became the second player in team history with 600 career receptions, joining Herman Moore (670). His current total stands at ,047 With 97 yards in Week 12 at New England (11/23), Tate moved his 2014 total to 1,047 yards and eclipsed 1,000 receiving yards for the fi rst time in his career. 10,000 Johnson needs 94 receiving yards to reach 10,000 for his career and become the only player in Lions history with 10,000 receiving yards. His current total stands at 9,906 yards. 20,000 On Stafford s 30-yard completion to Tate in the second quarter at Arizona (11/16), he surpassed 20,000 career passing yards.
