WHAT TO WATCH FOR A LOOK AT THE OFFENSE Offensive Coordinator Joe Lombardi was adamant that the primary factor in an improved offense in 215 will not involve a scheme change, but rather players simply being more comfortable in the existing system. WR Golden Tate, TE Eric Ebron and WR Corey Fuller are among the pieces entering their second season in Lombardi s offense, which has led to more efficient and productive practices throughout Training Camp. Lombardi on how he expects the Lions offense to be different this season: I think it s not going to be a huge scheme difference. It s going to be players that are a lot more comfortable doing what they re doing. So I think we re going to have better tempo. We ll probably have the ability to mix some personnel even more than we did last year. In a walk-thru, we get through 3 plays eight minutes faster than we did at this time last year. So it s just a comfort level with these guys, which for us as coaches makes us more comfortable doing things. QB Matthew Stafford and Tate gave the New York Jets a glimpse of things to come in the first preseason game. The two connected on the second play from scrimmage, as Stafford found Tate in the open field with room to run, resulting in a 22-yard gain. Three plays later, Stafford hit Tate in stride over the middle, allowing No. 15 to display his quickness as he scampered 35 yards into the end zone. Caldwell on the first team offense against the Jets: Really the thing that you re looking for, it s not often times that you just take the ball and move it down the field and score. Sometimes, you end up with a field goal. If you score it s great, but we re looking really for tempo, execution, precision, being sharp and not many penalties. So, I think the offensive unit, the first group was pretty sharp. As is true for any team, the preseason is also an opportunity to find new contributors on both offense and defense to add to the mix with last year s group. WR Greg Salas turned heads in his Lions debut against the Jets, hauling in five catches for 92 yards and one touchdown, a 2-yard strike from QB Dan Orlovsky in the third quarter. Salas comes to Detroit following two years with the Jets (213-14), and further validated that from top to bottom, the Lions offense has Head Coach Jim Caldwell excited in 215. Salas on the Jets game serving as a confidence booster: I have a lot of confidence. I ve done this in games previously. Whenever I ve gotten my shot, I ve made plays in games, so it s something I always knew I could do and getting the opportunity to actually do it is another thing, so I m just glad that I got the opportunity. Caldwell on the offense s overall performance against the Jets: The offensive line did a nice job in there as well as the backs carrying the ball. Three quarterbacks all had scoring drives at one point or another, which I think was good, but we still got a lot of work to do. But things were at least encouraging.

Tomlinson played on 73 percent of the offensive snaps in his first appearance at Ford Field as the offensive line helped pave the way for 193 yards on the ground, while protecting the Lions quarterbacks by only allowing one sack in the game. Caldwell on the offensive line s impact on the running game thus far: Typically, it doesn t go anywhere unless your line s blocking. No matter who you have back there at the running back position they have to be able to create some holes for them and those guys I thought did a good job of that. The backs were able to find them. With the absence of RB Joique Bell, who has missed most of training camp on the Active/Physically Unable To Perform (PUP) list, all eyes were on rookie RB Ameer Abdullah against the Jets. The second-round pick shined in his first contest. Highlighted by a 45-yard dash early on, Abdullah impressed with his natural quickness and agility. He finished with 67 yards on seven carries (9.6 avg) and returned one kickoff for 25 yards. Even Jets Head Coach Todd Bowles liked what he saw from Abdullah, comparing him to one of the Lions all-time greats. Bowles on what he saw from Lions RB Ameer Abdullah: He looked like he did in college. He s quick as a cat. He s about as quick as Barry Sanders. I m not saying he is Barry (Sanders), but he s a good running back and he made us miss today. Caldwell echoed his counterpart s assessment of his rookie running back, emphasizing Abdullah s ability to compete at the next level. Caldwell on Abdullah s performance: We ve seen his quickness and obviously when we were looking at him, evaluating him coming out of college you see he could run, tough competitor all those things and it s good to see him out there against another team and he was able to find some cracks and got off to a pretty good start. Rounding out the rookie class, CB Quandre Diggs, who has impressed through camp and is competing for the nickel cornerback position, finished the night with a pass deflection. DT Gabe Wright finished with one tackle, FB Michael Burton saw plenty of action with the first-team offense and helped create running lanes for Abdullah, while T Corey Robinson played on 77-percent of the offensive snaps. Undrafted rookie RB Zach Zenner also grinded out 55 tough yards on the ground and led the team with 13 carries Tomlinson on the rookies overall performance: Rookies, we come out and we re hungry. We re trying to make our place on the team and these are opportunities where we get to do that and we re going to make the most of that opportunity.

5 DEFENSE SHINES IN FIRST GAME It s no secret that the Detroit Lions defensive line has been a staple in the team s defensive success over the last few seasons, including last year as the Lions boasted the No. 2 overall defense in the NFL. Led by DE Ezekiel Ansah, DE Jason Jones, as well as new faces DT Haloti Ngata and DT Tyrunn Walker added to the rotation this year, Thursday s preseason home opener against the Jets showed that the D-Line is confident, poised and ready to build upon their dominance of years past. In Thursday s preseason opener, the defense showed both consistency and strength by limiting the Jets to their lone 34-yard field goal in the first quarter. The defense stopped New York twice on third-and-one and limited them to only 123 total yards, including only eight rushing yards in the second half. New York was 3-of-12 (25-percent) on third down and went scoreless in the second half. DT Caraun Reid on the defensive line s first time out: Yeah, we did a lot of good things out there tonight. We did what we accomplished, did what we practiced. We just have to take this opportunity. I think it was a great first start for us, and we have a lot to improve on. But it s good to see where we re at as a D-Line. The Princeton University standout lived up to the hype in the first preseason game as Reid, along with with DE Devin Taylor combined to sack Jets QB Bryce Petty for a 1-yard loss on a third-and-long situation, forcing a punt. Newcomer DT Jermelle Cudjo also proved valuable by stopping Jets RB Daryl Richardson on a third-and two, also garnering a fumble recovery later in the game. Caldwell on the defense s performance against the Jets: I think there were some good things and I think we still got a lot of things to work on. There were some guys that made some plays. Caraun (Reid) was obviously the sack and Devin (Taylor) made some plays here and there and Jermelle (Cudjo) made a nice play on a third down to stop things like that. Pretty good effort out of those guys. Beyond the defensive line, the defense as a whole has undergone minor adjustments and Defensive Coordinator Teryl Austin anticipates a solid defensive unit heading into the regular season opener in San Diego. Standout LB DeAndre Levy is now a permanent fixture here in Detroit after signing a four-year contact extension earlier in camp, and the seventh-year linebacker sees good things to come in the second year of Austin s system following the first preseason game. Levy on his assessment of the defense after the first preseason game: I think it was a decent start. I think the ones, we wanted to go out there a little bit better and not give up three points and a fourth-down conversion. But it feels good to get out here and officially get rolling against a different team to kind of see where guys are. Austin on his impressions of the defense so far in Training Camp: Guys are practicing hard, doing some good things. I think we need to get more consistent. I think we have to do a better job of setting edges on the defense. We ve got a long ways to go, but that s why we have camp. We ll get there, it s just going to take us a little while.

6 LIONS PRESEASON BY THE NUMBERS.5 DT Caraun Reid and DE Devin Taylor combined for the Lions first sack of the season, dropping Jets QB Bryce Petty for a loss of 1 yards in the first quarter. 3 The Lions kicking duo of K Matt Prater and rookie K Kyle Brindza ended the night three-for-three on field goal attempts against the Jets. Prater nailed a 28-yard field goal late in the first quarter, while Brindza was good from 49 and 41 yards in his NFL debut. 6 By allowing just six first downs vs. the New York Jets in the preseason opener, it marked the fewest first downs allowed by the Lions since at least 2 in the preseason and the only time yielding under 1 in a preseason game during that span. 1.8 Under Jim Caldwell, the Lions have allowed 1.8 pts per game (54 total points) in five preseason games, including just three points last week vs. the New York Jets. 2. The Lions defense allowed only three points against the Jets, tying with Oakland for the fewest points allowed last week. The Lions 2. points per game differential currently ranks second in the NFL behind only Philadelphia (26.). 31 Four players saw action at punt returner in the preseason opener, including RB Ameer Abdullah, WR TJ Jones, WR Ryan Broyles and WR Jeremy Ross. Jones led all players with 31 yards on three returns, including a long of :43 Detroit generated three drives of 11 or more plays (17, 11, 11) and possessed the ball for a total of 36:43 against the Jets. The team s current average ranks third in the NFL behind only Houston (4:6) and Buffalo (37:1). 45 In his first action as an NFL running back, rookie RB Ameer Abdullah dazzled against the New York Jets with a 45-yard run in the first quarter. He finished the game with 67 yards on seven carries (9.6 avg). 54 Despite only punting twice against the Jets, P Sam Martin racked up 12 yards in his preseason debut, which included a 54-yard punt in the second quarter. 71 Led by QB Matthew Stafford and WR Golden Tate, the Lions first-team offense wasted no time finding the end zone in the team s Preseason Game 1 matchup with the New York Jets. Stafford engineered a five-play, 71-yard drive that resulted in a 35-yard Stafford-Tate touchdown connection In all five preseason games under Jim Caldwell, the Lions defense has not allowed a team to reach more than 1 yards rushing in either of those five games. Over five preseason games the past two years, the Lions defense is yielding just 78.6 rushing yards per game. 92 WR Greg Salas stole the show on offense against his former team as he led all receivers with five receptions for 92 yards and 2-yard touchdown pass from QB Dan Orlovsky in the third quarter against the Jets. 1 Since 2, the Lions have allowed under 1 net passing yards in a preseason game just two times, including the 56 yards to the New York Jets last week. The only other time this was accomplished in the preseason was vs. Pittsburgh (85) August 9, The defense also held the Jets to just 67 yards rushing and 56 yards passing (123 total yards). The 123 yards allowed to the Jets in the preseason opener was the lowest total allowed by the Lions defense in a preseason game since at least By only allowing 123 net yards of total offense, combined with the offense s 428 yards, the Lions have the highest preseason yards per game differential in the NFL at 35. through one preseason game. Cincinnati has the secondhighest differential with With 428 total offensive yards against the New York Jets, the Lions accumulated the most offensive yards in a preseason game since they registered 455 against New England August 22, 213. It also marked the most in a preseason opener since Detroit accumulated 454 total yards vs. Atlanta August 15, 29.
