The Bulldogs (1-0) are coming off a victory at Washington last week, the program s eighth victory over a BCS school since The Wildcats (1-0) took out Western Kentucky at home in their opener last week. Last Game The Bulldogs used three defensive touchdowns to defeat Washington on Sunday at Husky Stadium. Fresno State not only won its first opener since 2001, but it also handed the Huskies their worst non-conference home loss since Brian Morris ran a fumble in for a touchdown while James Sanders and Richard Marshall scored on interception returns. Dwayne Wright racked up 109 yards on the ground. On the Road Again This year marked the fifth consecutive season Fresno State opened on the road. This year, the Bulldogs began with a victory, something they hadn t done since knocking off Colorado in the 2001 opener. However, this season marks the first time since 2000 that Fresno State has opened with back-to-back road games. In the 00 season, the Bulldogs fell to Ohio State and UCLA to kick off the campaign. Fresno State hasn t started 2-0 since 2001, when it won its first six contests. First Trip to Kansas Not only is this week s game Fresno State s first game all-time against Kansas State, it is also the program s first ever in the state of Kansas. The Bulldogs are 1-9 in their history against Big 12 opponents, the last matchup coming last year, when top-ranked Oklahoma handed Fresno State a loss in Norman. BCS Busters Fresno State s victory at Washington on Sunday was the program s eighth against a BCS Conference opponent since 2000, the most of any non-bcs school. The Bulldogs have actually knocked off BCS opponents in back-to-back games if counting the 2003 Silicon Valley Football Classic, in which the team defeated UCLA Since Pat Hill took over as head coach in 1997, the Bulldogs have played 22 games against BCS opponents. The Bulldogs lost their first nine all of which came on the road by an average margin of 14 points. Four of those were decided by less than a touchdown and one was in overtime (at Oregon in 1997). But lately, Fresno State s fortunes have changed. The Bulldogs have gone 8-6 in their last 14 games versus BCS teams, with eight of those opponents having been in the top 25 at game time. This week s contest is Fresno State s last against a BCS team during the regular season.

2 Head Coach Pat Hill All of the credit for the resurgence of Bulldog football can be traced to head coach Pat Hill. Hill took over a declining program in 1997 and within three years had won a championship and guided his team to a bowl game. More importantly, Hill infused academic integrity to the program, lifting the program from a 2.21 GPA to a Now in his eighth season at the helm, Hill once again has Fresno State receiving national attention as one of the nation s top non-bcs programs. The Bulldogs have been selected to win the WAC title by most national publications, including ESPN.com and collegefootballnews.com. It took Hill just three seasons to turn around a program that had sagged since the glory days of the early 1990 s. In 1999, the Bulldogs earned a share of a WAC championship, made their first bowl appearance since 1993 and produced a league-best six first-team All-WAC players. In addition, Fresno State led the WAC academic scholars with 14 and produced the program s first Academic All-American, Payton Williams. Since arriving, money has been raised to build a new football facility, improvements to the Duncan Building s training room, expansion to the football offices and a new academic center that will benefit all student-athletes at Fresno State. Last year, Hill completed his seventh season as head coach and 13th overall, having spent six seasons as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator ( ) under Jim Sweeney when the Bulldogs were among the nation s most successful teams. Fresno State posted a overall record during those six seasons. Since arriving at Fresno State, Hill has built a reputation as a strong recruiter. In addition to landing the Bulldogs in five consecutive bowl games, Hill has helped produce 13 players on NFL rosters entering the 2003 season, the thirdhighest total of any non-bcs school. Pat Hill's Resume 1997-present: Fresno State, Head Coach; 1996: Baltimore Ravens, Assistant Coach (tight ends/off. line); : Cleveland Browns, Assistant Coach (tight ends/off. line); : Univ. of Arizona (off. coordinator/off. line); : Fresno State, Assistant Coach (off. line/recruiting); 1983: Calgary (CFL), Assistant Coach (off. coordinator/off. line); : UNLV, Assistant Coach (off. coordinator/off. line); : Univ. of Utah, Assistant Coach (off. line/recruiting); : L.A. Last week s victory over Washington which came on Sunday moved the Bulldogs to 3-0 all-time in games played on Sunday. Fresno State s other two Sunday games were in 2001 a win at Colorado and a triumph at home over Oregon State. Going Bowling...Again Last year marked the Bulldogs fifth consecutive bowl appearance, the longest such streak in the WAC and the second-longest of any team on the West Coast. Of all the teams in the Mountain and Pacific Time Zones, only Oregon, with eight, has a longer consecutive bowl streak than Fresno State. Colorado State, along with Fresno State, are second with five straight appearances each. WAC Goes 3-1 in Bowls For the first time since 1998, four WAC teams made bowl appearances last year. In addition to Fresno State s win over UCLA, Boise State defeated TCU in the Fort Worth Bowl and beat Houston in the Bowl. Tulsa, making its first bowl appearance since 1991, lost to Georgia Tech in the Humanitarian Bowl. Fresno State s Bowl History Fresno State is 10-8 all-time in bowl games, including victories in four in a row from The Bulldogs win over UCLA marked the first time in school history the Bulldogs won bowl games in consecutive years. Of the key players on the depth chart, only two guard Sean Finnerty (knee injury) and linebacker Manuel Sanchez (shoulder) were questionable heading into the Washington game. Due to last week s game occurring on a Sunday, an injury report was not available at the time of this release. Success Against the Pac-10 Fresno State owns a three-game winning streak against Pac-10 opponents, having posted victories over Washington last week and Oregon State and UCLA in The Bulldogs also have a two-game bowl winning streak against the Pac-10, defeating USC in the 1992 Freedom Bowl and then knocking off the Bruins in last year s Silicon Valley Football Classic. Fresno State is all-time against the Pac-10. However, since 1980, the Bulldogs have a winning record (18-15) against Pac-10 foes.

Here are the national leaders in wins since No Team Wins 1. Oklahoma Miami (Fla.) Texas Boise State, Ohio State Fresno State, Washington, USC King of the WAC Fresno State s Pat Hill is second in winning percentage among current Western Athletic Conference coaches. Hill is now (41-16 WAC), a percentage of.615, which ranks just ahead of s June Jones, who is at.606. Here s how Hill, the second-longest tenured head coach in the league, ranks in winning percentage among WAC coaches: Coach Overall (yrs) Pct. Current School (yrs) Pct. Dan Hawkins, Boise State (8) (3).850 Pat Hill, Fresno State (7) (7).615 June Jones, (5) (5).606 Best in the West In the last five years, Fresno State has established itself as one of the best college football programs on the West Coast. Only Oregon and Boise State, which both have 50, have posted more victories than the Bulldogs, who have won 49. Here is a breakdown of the schools in the Western United States with the most Division I-A wins since 1998*. Washington, which Fresno State defeated Sunday, currenly ranks sixth. Here is a look at the West s best teams since 1999: No Team Wins 1. Oregon Boise State Fresno State Colorado State USC Others: Washington (45), Air Force (43), Oregon State (43), UCLA (41), Colorado (40) * Counts teams in the Pacific, Mountain and an Time Zones. Many Happy Returns Fresno State s special teams have established themselves as one of the nation s best units. Not only are the Bulldogs exceptional at blocking kicks, but they are also a threat to put points on the board every time they take the field. Since Pat Hill took over in 1997, Fresno State has scored 16 touchdowns on special teams and has racked up three safeties. Below is a breakdown of the Bulldogs special teams scoring history: 7 punt returns for TDs (last: Nov. 21, 2003, by Bernard Berrian vs. Boise State) 3 kickoff returns for TDs (last: Sept. 27, 2003, by Nate Ray vs. ) 6 blocked punts/fgs returned for TDs (last: Nov. 15, 2003 vs. San Jose State) 3 team safeties (last: Oct. 4, 2002, vs. Colorado State) Pick Parade Since 1999, Fresno State has built a reputation as one of the most proficient teams in the nation at intercepting passes. Last week against Washington did nothing to change that. The Bulldogs pilfered four Husky passes, giving them 92 in the last five-plus seasons, which ranks among the eight best totals in the nation. In fact, the Bulldogs have picked off at least one pass in 16 of the last 21 games. Not only has the team been exceptional at picking off passes, they have also been stout at defending the pass as a whole, allowing just yards through the air in the last seven games of 2003 and then just 190 last week at Washington.

4 Fresno State Miscellany Bulldog Stadium at Jim Sweeney Field Since taking over Bulldog Stadium in 1980, Fresno State has one of the best home records in college football. One of the most beautiful stadiums in the Western Athletic Conference, Bulldog Stadium underwent a two-phase expansion project in 1991, increasing seating by 10,000 to a capacity of 41,031 and adding 22 sky suites. Jim Sweeney was Fresno State s head coach ( , ) who won eight conference championships, five bowl game titles and guided the Bulldogs to a record and won 200 games as a college coach, 16th-most in NCAA history. Fresno State at Bulldog Stadium Overall (.807) WAC Record (.840) (.817) (.779) 2000-p (.864) Academic Gameplan Since Pat Hill took over the Fresno State program, the Bulldogs have become national leaders in academic success. One of Hill s first tasks was hiring John Baxter as associate head coach. Baxter s trademarked Academic Gameplan is a proven winner across the nation. In the third year of the Gameplan, the football program produced a WAC-best 14 scholar-athletes, the school s first Academic All-American and the number of honored athletes at the Kiwanis Torch of Excellence dinner grew from four to 33. The team s GPA was raised from 2.12 to 2.77 in three seasons. Academic Gameplan has been featured in many publications, including the Dec. 20, 1999, issue of Sports Illustrated. Academic Gameplan is used by Oregon, Washington State, Southern Mississippi and Notre Dame. Since 1997, the Bulldogs have produced 49 Academic All-WAC performers, more than any team in the league during that period. Fresno State had a WAC-best 10 Academic All-WAC selections in 2002, marking the third consecutive year of leading the conference in academic picks. V is for Valley Fresno State prides itself on being the Valley s Team. This pride can be seen in the form of a large green V on the back of the Bulldog helmets as a symbol to the agricultural community of the San Joaquin Valley. The Valley is the world s richest agricultural area in export dollars. The Bulldog Foundation Fresno State s famous Bulldog Foundation has been the No. 1 fundraising organization in the nation for 17 consecutive years. This volunteer group raises over $7 million annually for the Fresno State Athletics Department. The BDF is headed by Executive Director Pat Ogle, the 1996 National Fundraiser of the Year. The monies raised by the BDF go towards scholarships, recruiting and special needs of the department. When Identifying Fresno State... The official name of the school is California State University, Fresno. For athletics department purposes, the University prefesrs to be simply called Fresno State. Please do not refer to the school as Fresno State University or FSU. For graphics or abbreviations, we ask that you please use FS not FSU or CSUF. Bulldog Block Party In 2003 the Bulldogs totaled nine blocked kicks, the most since 2000 and just one shy of the school record, set in The kick-blocking prowess was in midseason form last week, as Logan Mankins blocked a Washington field goal attempt. Fresno State has thrust itself into the nation s elite in blocking punts and kicks since Pat Hill took over in Under Hill, Fresno State has blocked 50 kicks and are averaging one block every 1.8 games since Following is a breakdown of Fresno State s kick blocking prowess since 1997: Blocked Blocked Year Punts PAT & FG Total Totals 26* * includes instances when Fresno State tackled the punter before he could get kick away. BCS Business Under Pat Hill, Fresno State has scheduled aggressively in the non-conference season, playing as many games against BCS Conference opponents as any other school. The Bulldogs have enjoyed some success against those teams as of late, going 8-6 in their last 12 contests against BCS schools. The 2004 schedule is no different with this week s game following the opener at Washington. Here is a look at Fresno State s last 14 games against BCS opposition: Date Opponent Location Outcome Sept. 23, 2000 California Bulldog Stadium W, 17-3 Aug. 26, 2001 at No. 25 Colorado Boulder, Colo. In addition, end Claude Sanders added five sacks last season and has 10 in his career. In all, nine returning Bulldogs accounted for 31 sacks last season. In Sunday s game, Fresno State totaled two sacks one by James Sanders and the other by Claude Sanders. Attendance Tidbit While the Bulldogs are experiencing success on the field with five consecutive bowl appearances, the Red Wave fans are turning out in record numbers. Over the last five years, Fresno State has averaged 39,869 fans at Bulldog Stadium (capacity 41,031) per season. That s a 97 percent average of Bulldog Stadium capacity filled over the last five years. Over 15,000 Bulldog fans attended Fresno State s bowl win over UCLA.

5 Where Fresno State Ranks Fresno State Among Nation s Best Since the 1985 season, only 15 Division I-A schools have won more games than the Bulldogs. Most Victories (1985-) 1. Nebraska Florida State Miami (Fla.) Michigan Tennessee Florida Ohio State Penn State Texas A&M Alabama BYU Oklahoma Notre Dame Colorado Fresno State Washington Air Force Syracuse Georgia Clemson Auburn Virginia Tech Virginia UCLA Arizona Top 25 Winning Percentage (1985-) 1. Most Victories by Western Schools (1985-) 1. BYU Colorado Fresno State Washington Air Force UCLA Fresno State Quarterback University The Bulldogs had three quarterbacks in the NFL during the 2002 season, tying Michigan and Florida State for the most of any college. Neither Michigan nor Florida State had a quarterback taken in the top 10 picks of the NFL draft since 1990, while Fresno State has produced two. Here are some other QB University Notes (since 1990): Both of Pat Hill s two starting quarterbacks are in the NFL (Billy Volek and David Carr). Fresno State is one of three schools (Washington State and Tennessee are the others) to have one quarterback taken as the No. 1 overall pick in the NFL Draft and another selected in the top 10. Of those, only Fresno State s quarterbacks are both still active. Fresno State is one of five schools (Tennessee, Washington State, Oregon and Houston are the others) to have two QB s selected among the top 10 NFL Draft picks. Of those, only Oregon and Fresno State s are still active. Fresno State s Trent Dilfer is the only top 10 drafted quarterback since 1990 to win a Super Bowl. There have been 17 quarterbacks taken in the top 10 picks of the NFL Draft since 1990, and Fresno State has produced two of them. Fresno State s three current NFL quarterbacks David Carr, Houston Texas (No. 1 NFL Draft pick) Trent Dilfer, Seattle Seahawks (No. 6 NFL Draft pick of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers) Billy Volek, Tennessee Titans (back-up quarterback to Steve McNair for the Tennessee Titans) This Shack More Like a Castle One of the most dominant players on Fresno State s offensive line last year was Dartangon Shack, a second-team All-WAC selection in Before last season started, Shack moved to left tackle to protect the quarterback s back side at the start of the season. In his 13 starts, he was simply dominating despite playing the first half of the season with a severely sprained ankle which actually called him to miss the opener at Tennessee. Here are a few of Shack s notable performances: vs. Tennessee s Constantin Ritzman (first-team All-SEC) Two tackles, one sack for eight yards vs. Oklahoma s Dan Cody (first-team All-Big 12) One tackle vs. s Jorge Cordova (midseason All-American and WAC sack and TFL leader) Five tackles, no tackles for loss, no sacks vs. UCLA s Dave Ball (first-team All-American, Pac-10 Defensive Player of the Year, national sack leader, Chevrolet Defensive Player of the Year) Five tackles, no tackles for loss, no sacks Tracking Pinegar Junior quarterback Paul Pinegar has already established a resume that fits right in with some of the great Bulldog quarterbacks of the past. He has a 16-5 record as a starter, and he is moving up the career charts in passing yards, total offense and touchdown passes. Here is a look at where the 2002 WAC Freshman of the Year stands in the program s record book: Passing Yardage Total Offense 1. Visintainer answered any questions with a phenomenal season, making 21 of his 28 field goal attempts, including two game-winners (Oregon State with a 47 yard kick and Rice with a 39 yard kick). He has won WAC Special Teams Player of the Week twice, made all 35 of his PAT attempts, and was second-team All-WAC, all while playing the second half of the season with a severly sprained ankle. He entered this season having made 11 of his last 13 attempts, but he missed a 34-yarder Sunday at Washington, the shortest miss of his career. Visintainer is adding to a long line of special teams success. Fresno State has produced a first or second-team All-WAC kicker in five of the last six seasons. Deja Vu...All Over Again Fresno State s Richard Marshall experienced something Sunday that very few, if any, Bulldogs ever have. Just a sophomore, Marshall began his career last year in the opener at Tennessee and supplied Fresno State s only offense, an 83-yard interception return in the team s 24-6 loss in Knoxville. It was the only interception returned for a score the entire 2003 season. But then in this year s opener, lightning struck again when Marshall jumped in front of a Casey Paus pass, picked it off and raced 75 yards for a score. In doing so, Marshall became just the fifth player in program history to return two interceptions for touchdowns. A Notable Sunday Performance Fresno State s victory over Washington was notable for more than just the outcome. Here are a few interesting tidbits from the Bulldogs 19-point road victory: With his 75-yard interception return for a touchdown, Richard Marshall tied the school record with two INT s returned for scores. Dee Meza, Efrain Guizar, Rob Webster and Jack Erdman also had two in their careers. This year marked the second opener in a row that Marshall returned an interception for a TD. Last year, his 83-yarder against Tennessee provided Fresno State s only scoring in a 24-6 loss. Marshall also currently holds the school record for career interception return average at The former record holder was Calvin Lee ( ), who averaged 27.0 Fresno State had 128 yards in interception returns, breaking the school s single-game record previously set in a win over in The Bulldogs three defensive touchdowns were the first time they registered that many since Pat Hill took over in In defeating Washington 35-16, Fresno State handed the Huskies their worst non-conference home loss since September Memories While the month of September has been Pat Hill s worst as a head coach (Hill is in September), it has also been a month that has produced some of the school s most memorable moments. In 2001, Hill guided the Bulldogs to a perfect 4-0 month, which included wins over two nationally ranked teams (Oregon State and Wisconsin), and last season, the Bulldogs were 3-1 in September, with the only loss coming to No. 1 ranked Oklahoma Other memorable September moments include: Defeating Colorado State on Sept. 19, 1992, in the first game as a member of the WAC. Beating Oregon on Sept. 5, 1981, in front of a then-school record crowd of 28,697 at Bulldog Stadium. It was Fresno State s first win over a Pac-10 opponent. Knocking off Arizona in Tucson on Sept. 1, 1984, to open the season. Defeating Oregon State 27-0 on Sept. 13, 1986, en route to a 9-2 season. Upsetting No. 10 Oregon State on Sept. 2, 2001, in front of a then-bulldog Stadium record crowd of 42,410. The Beavers are the highest ranked team Fresno State has ever defeated. Defeating No. 18 Wisconsin in Madison on Sept. 8, 2001, which led to Fresno State being featured on the cover of Sports Illustrated for the first time in school history. Trouncing Washington last week and handing UW its worst non-conference home loss in nearly 50 years.

8 More on Pat Hill As head coach Pat Hill embarks on his eighth season at the helm of the Bulldogs, certain facets of his program have become familiar not only in the San Joaquin Valley, but nationwide as well. Here is a look at some of the more familiar aspects of Fresno State football: Graduation Rates When Pat Hill took over at Fresno State, the graduation rate for the football program was 25 percent. In 2002, Hill's first recruiting class and first graduating class had a graduation rate of 64 percent. Here are some more facts about the football program and graduation: Of the five players who did not receive their degree last year, all are just one semester away from graduating. Of the group that did receive their degree, four were either partial or non-qualifiers. Three players currently on the roster have already graduated and four will receive their degrees after the fall semester. Over the last two seasons, 21 of 31 senior players graduated, with a couple more expected to graduate in the spring of That s a graduation percentage of 68 percent over a two-year period. Scheduling Philosophy In order to gain national respect, Hill will continue to select games against the nation's top programs, meaning the Bulldogs will play many games on the road in hostile environments. While scheduling is difficult, Fresno State will continue to play an aggressive schedule. This year, and in the coming years, non-conference games against Colorado State, Oregon, Oregon State, Washington, Kansas State and Wisconsin have already been scheduled. Non-Qualifiers A perception exists that the Bulldogs are comprised primarily of non-qualifiers, or props, as they are commonly known. In actuality, nothing is further from the truth. In July, Fresno State instituted a new policy prohibiting the recruitment and signing of non-qualifiers beginning with the academic year. Here are some facts about Fresno State and its non-qualifiers: There were only eight non-qualifiers on the 2004 Bulldog roster. Only four freshmen non-qualifiers were accepted in the fall of Building a New Tradition on the National Level In the 1970 s, Florida State was an emerging college football power. This is the model Pat Hill uses and talks about with his players. In the 1980 s, Miami (Fla.) emerged on the national scene. Then in the 1990 s, Virginia Tech rose from obscurity to become a national championship contender. Hill's goal is to make the Bulldogs the team of the 2000 s. He will settle for nothing less than to become a perennial top 25 program and to be considered for a BCS bowl game. Over the last four years, Fresno State s seven wins over BCS opponents ranks best among non-bcs schools.
