September 2001 Bulldogs Off to Their First 3-0 Start Since 1995 Dogs Stampede Buffaloes Fresno State took a step forward in earning national recognition by beating Colorado in the Jim Thorpe Classic The win marks the first time the Bulldogs have ever beaten a Big 12 team. The Bulldog offense controlled the tempo of the game with west-coast type offense that kept chipping away at the Buffalo defense. Colorado seemed to have their way with the Fresno State defense but came up short time and again turning the ball over five times. Fresno State got the early lead on a sixminute drive that culminated in a David Carr one-yard run into the end zone. On the next drive Colorado committed its first turnover of the game that led to the Dogs second touchdown on a one-yard run by running back Paris Gaines. Just as the Bulldogs were enjoying their 14-point cushion the Buffaloes struck back on a 77-yard punt return for a touchdown. Fresno State kept its composure and once again looked to senior David Carr for an answer. The senior quarterback replied with a 21-yard strike to receiver Marque Davis that once again gave the Dogs a 14-point lead. The biggest play of the day came in the fourth quarter a little over three minutes left. Colorado quarterback Craig Ochs tried to connect with tight end Daniel Graham for a touchdown that would have put the Buffaloes up Cornerback Devon Banks would have none of it, however, intercepting the pass for a touchback. The offense did it part once again burning off enough time to preserve the lead and give Fresno State its first win of the year. Beavers Are Dog House Victim Fresno State extended its home-game winning streak to 16 with a drumming of No. 10 Oregon State. The Bulldogs piled up 421 yards of offense in front of a crowd of 42, 410 and held the Beavers rushing attack to 27 yards in their second win of the year. David Carr led the way with an all-out aerial assault that included 340 yards with four touchdowns. On the ground the Bulldogs were paced by running backs Paris Gaines and Josh Levi who combined for 107 yards with a touchdown. Once again Fresno State jumped out to the early lead against its opponent with a 10-0 lead on a Parris Gaines 1-yard run and an Asen Asparuhov field goal. The Bulldogs went into halftime with a lead after giving up a 16-yard touchdown run to Beaver tailback Ken Simonton. In the second half David Carr and company took over the game scoring twice on a 28-yard pass and a 70-yard strike. The defense led by defensive end Alan Harper and Vernon Fox held the Beavers scoreless in the quarter. In the fourth quarter Oregon State attempted a final comeback as they connected on back-to-back touchdown passes that cut the lead back down to seven. The Bulldogs would not be denied, though, as David Carr found Rodney Wright for a 32-yard touchdown pass. Two field goals later and Fresno State closed the door on the Beavers for good with a decisive final score. Fresno State improved to 2-0 on the season. Badgers Beaten By Dogs Coach Pat Hill guided the Bulldogs into the Red Sea at Camp Randall Stadium hoping to become the first non-conference team to win there since Colorado in Not only did Hill accomplish his mission but also brought Fresno State into the college football spotlight once again by defeating Wisconsin Junior wide receiver Bernard Berrian racked up 300 yards of all-purpose yards to complete a 10-point come-from-behind win. David Carr showed poise once again throwing for 240 yards and two touchdowns. Wisconsin seemed to be in control of the ballgame early as running back Anthony Davis and receiver Lee Evans ranthrough the Bulldog defense like a knife through warm butter. The Badgers needed just five plays to score on their opening possession highlighted by a Davis 48-yard run. Later in the quarter Lee Evans did his damage catching a 53- yard pass to give the Badgers a 14-7 lead. Fresno State headed into halftime trailing On the opening kick-off off in the third quarter Bernard Berrian turned the momentum around for good with a 96- yard touchdown return. Berrian ran for the touchdown celebration. Wisconsin couldn t recover going scoreless the rest of the game. David Carr and company took over from that point on. Carr connected with receiver Rodney Wright with in the third quarter to give the Bulldogs a lead. Rodney Wright and Bernard Berrian combined for 17 catches and 189 receiving yards on the day. This marked the first time Fresno State has started 3-0 since With the win the Bulldogs also received their highest ranking on a national poll with an 11th ranking in the AP poll.

He has compiled 5-8 record while at Utah State including this season. Utah State is all-time against Fresno State. Jose Fuentes returns at quarterback this year for the Aggies after being named second team All-Big West last season. The Aggies running attack is lead by third team All-American Emmett White. He led the NCAA in all-purpose yards last year. White also set the NCAA record for all-purpose yards in one game, piling up 578 against New Mexico last season. They face defending National Champions Oklahoma the second week. Head Coach Keith Burns begins his second season with Tulsa. He went 6-7 last season and became the 10th coach in school history to win at least five games in his first season. Tulsa is 0-2 all-time against the Bulldogs. In those two losses the past two years Tulsa has been outscored Tulsa completed the 2000 season with the most wins in 10 seasons with a 5-7 mark. The Rotary Lombardi Award is hosted by the Rotary Club of Houston and benefits the American Cancer Society. The award is named after legendary NFL coach Vince Lombardi. It is awarded to the college football lineman offense or defense who, in addition to outstanding performance and ability, best exemplifies the discipline of Vince Lombardi. The winner is voted on by a committee of over 300 of America s most prominent college football coaches, football writers, sports broadcasters and previous Rotary Lombardi Award winners.
