3X3U Official Rules of the Game The then-current Official NCAA Basketball Rules of the Game will govern all gameplay situations and event operations not specifically addressed in these 3X3U Rules of the Game for the 2018 Dos Equis 3X3U Tournament (the Event ) and each game of the Event (each, a Game ). Article 1: Event Court a. Each game in the Event will be played on an Event-sanctioned basketball court with one (1) basketball stanchion, backboard, goal and net generally in line with those used for NCAA college basketball competition. b. A court for the Event (the Court ) will have a playing surface that is approximately fifteen (15) meters wide and eleven (11) meters long. c. The Court shall have regular basketball markings, including a standard free throw line, a two point line (based upon the NCAA three point line) and a no charge semi-circle area underneath the basket. The Court may be half of a traditional NCAA-compliant basketball court. d. Intersport, Inc. (the Organizers ) shall have discretion to modify any of the details of the Court as necessary for the most efficient staging of Event. Article 2: Teams a. Each team shall consist of four (4) players with three (3) players on the Court during game play and one (1) substitute (collectively, a Team ), unless there are fewer Players available due to injury or disqualification. All of the players on a Team will be former NCAA Division I men s basketball players who, after their most recent season, have completed their NCAA eligibility (each a Player and collectively Players ). The Players on each Team will be from the same NCAA Division I basketball conference. b. Players will be invited to participate in the Event by the Organizers, and Teams will be designated in accordance with Players NCAA Division I basketball conference affiliation, with each Team corresponding with a Division I basketball conference. c. Each Team will choose one (1) captain. Article 3: Game Officials Each Game shall have a team of officials consisting of two (2) referees, as well as one (1) official time keeper and one (1) official scorekeeper. Article 4: Beginning the Game a. Both Teams shall warm-up simultaneously prior to their Game.
b. A coin flip shall determine which Team gets the first possession. The Team that wins the coin flip can choose to either receive ball possession at the beginning of the Game or at the beginning of a potential overtime. c. The Game must start with three (3) players for each Team on the Court. Article 5: Scoring a. Every made shot inside the outer two-point arc during game play and without any violation by the offensive Team shall be awarded one (1) point. b. Every shot made behind the outer two-point arc during game play and without any violation by the offensive Team shall be awarded two (2) points. c. Every successful free throw shall be awarded one (1) point. Article 6: Playing Time/Winner of a Game a. The regular playing time shall be as follows: one (1) period of ten (10) minutes of playing time. The official game clock shall be stopped during dead ball situations and free throws. The official game clock shall be restarted by the official time keeper after the exchange of the ball is completed (as soon as it is in the offensive Team s hands). b. However, the first Team that scores twenty one (21) points or more wins the Game, even if it happens before the end of the Game s regular playing time. c. If the score is tied at the end of playing time, an extra period of time will be played. Ball possession will belong to a Team in accordance with Article 4b. There shall be an interval of one (1) minute before the overtime period starts. The first Team to score two (2) points in the overtime period wins the Game. Article7: Fouls/Free Throws a. All fouls in a Game will be called by the official referees for that Game. Players may not call fouls. b. A Team is in a penalty situation after it has committed six (6) fouls in a Game. Players are not excluded from a Game based on the number of personal fouls subject to Article 15. c. Fouls during the act of shooting inside the two-point arc as determined by a referee shall be awarded one (1) free throw. Fouls during the act of shooting behind the two-point arc as determined by a referee shall be awarded two (2) free throws. d. Fouls during the act of shooting followed by a successful field goal shall be awarded one (1) additional free throw. e. Team fouls 7, 8 and 9 in a Game shall give the other Team two (2) free throws if fouls occur on defense. The 10th and any subsequent Team foul in a Game shall give the other
Team two (2) free throws and ball possession if the fouls occur on defense. This clause is applied also to fouls during the act of shooting and overrules Article 7c where applicable. Offensive fouls will result in a change of possession but will not give the other Team free throw opportunities. f. Technical and unsportsmanlike fouls will be called in the discretion of the referees based upon NCAA rules. All technical fouls shall give the other Team one (1) free throw and ball possession. All unsportsmanlike fouls shall give the other Team two (2) free throws and ball possession. The Game shall continue with an exchange of the ball behind the arc at the top of the Court after a technical or unsportsmanlike foul. Article 8: How the Ball is Played a. Following each successful field goal or last free throw (except those followed by ball possession) a Player from a non-scoring Team will resume the game by dribbling or passing the ball from inside the Court directly underneath the basket (not from behind the end line) to a place on the Court behind the two-point arc. The defensive team is not allowed to play for the ball in the no-charge semi-circle area underneath the basket. b. Following each unsuccessful field goal or last free throw (except those followed by ball possession) if the offensive Team rebounds the ball, it may continue to attempt to score without returning the ball behind the two-point arc. If the defensive Team rebounds the ball, it must return the ball behind the two-point arc (by passing or dribbling). c. If the defensive Team steals or blocks the ball, it must return the ball behind the twopoint arc (by passing or dribbling) d. Possession of the ball given to either Team following any dead ball situation shall start with an exchange of the ball between the defensive and the offensive player behind the two-point arc at the top of the Court (a Check-Ball ). e. A Player is considered to be behind the arc when both of his feet are outside of the twopoint arc. f. In the event of a game play situation that results in a jump ball, the defensive Team shall be rewarded the ball. Article 9: Shot Clock The Court will be equipped with a shot clock, and a Team must attempt a shot within twelve (12) seconds on each possession. The shot clock shall start as soon as the ball is in the possession of the Team on offense (following the exchange with the defensive player or after a successful field goal underneath the basket). Failure to take a shot that hits the rim prior to expiration of the shot clock shall be deemed a shot clock violation and give possession to the other Team who must begin possession with a Check-Ball.
Article 10: Substitutions Substitutions can be done by either Team when the ball becomes dead, prior to the Check-Ball or free throw. The substitute can enter the Game after his teammate steps off the court and establishes a physical contact with him. Substitutions can only take place behind the end line opposite the basket and substitutions require a signal from the referees or table officials. Article 11: Time-Outs a. Each Team is granted one (1) time-out per Game. Any Player can call the time-out in a dead ball situation. b. Portions of the Event will involve TV or other media production. For televised or broadcast Games, the Organizers can decide to apply two (2) TV/media time-outs that will be called at the first dead ball after the game clock shows 6:59 and 3:59 remaining in the televised Games. c. All time-outs have a length of thirty (30) seconds. d. Time-outs and substitutions can only be called in dead ball situations and cannot be called when the ball is live. Article12: Protest Procedure In the event that a Team believes its interests have been adversely affected by a decision of an official or by any event that took place during a Game, protest must proceed in the following manner: a. First, the captain of that Team shall sign the score sheet immediately at the end of the Game and before the referee signs it. b. Second, within ten (10) minutes of the end of the Game, the Team should present an explanation of the issue to the Organizers. c. Third, video review may be used only to decide if a last shot for a field goal at the end of the Game was released prior to expiration of the Game clock or whether that shot for a field goal should have counted for one (1) or two (2) points. There will be no other video reviews. d. The Organizers may evaluate and resolve any issue raised by a Team in accordance with this Article 12. All decisions of the Organizers shall be final. Article 13: Pool Play Format Teams shall be split into eight (8) pools, with four (4) Teams in each pool. Pools will be organized at the sole discretion of the Organizers. The Teams will play three (3) Games, one (1) Game against each of the other Teams within the pool. One (1) Team from each pool will be deemed the pool winner and will advance to the bracket portion of the Event. The pool winner will be determined based on the following criteria in this order: 1. Win-loss record;
2. In the case of a two (2) Team tie with respect to win-loss record, the result of the head-tohead Game between those Teams; 3. In the case of a three (3) Team tie with respect to win-loss record, Teams will be ranked by combined point differential (points scored points allowed) in the three (3) Games that they played, and the two (2) Teams with the highest overall point differential will play each other in one (1) Game in which the first Team to score five (5) points wins (a Pool Tie-Break Game ). There are no time-outs in a Pool Tie-Break Game. The first Team to score five (5) points will be deemed the winner of that Pool Tie-Break Game and that pool. In the event that three (3) Teams have the same overall point differential, the tiebreaks will go as follows until two (2) Teams can be determined to play in the Pool Tie-Break Game. Tie-breaks will be, in order: overall point differential point differential against tied Teams total points scored in all three (3) pool play Games total points scored in Games against the other tied Teams. 4. In the case of ties with respect to win-loss record, overall point differential, point differential in Games played against tied Teams, total points scored in pool play Games, and total points scored in Games against tied Teams, then numbers will be drawn by the tied Teams based on a system explained in advance by the Organizers. The drawn numbers will determine which single Team will get a bye to the second round of the tie-break playoff ( the Bye Team ). The two (2) Teams without the bye will play in the initial Pool Tie-Break Game. The first Team to score five (5) points in the initial Pool Tie-Break Game wins and advances to play the Bye Team in a second Pool Tie-Break Game. The first Team to score five (5) points in the second Pool Tie-Break Game wins the pool. Article 14: Event Bracket Stage The eight (8) pool winners shall be put into a single elimination bracket determined by the Organizers. a. Each of the eight (8) Teams shall play their first round Game, with the winner of each Game advancing to the next round of the Event bracket stage. b. Each of the four (4) Teams that advance to the second round of the Event bracket stage will play their second round Game, with the winning Teams advancing in the Event bracket. c. Each of the two (2) losing Teams in the second round of the Event bracket stage will play a third place Game against each other to determine the Event s third place Team. d. Each of the two (2) winning Teams in the second round of the Event bracket stage will play a final Game against each other to determine the Event winner and second place Team.
Article 15: Disqualification A Player committing two (2) unsportsmanlike fouls (not applicable to technical fouls) in a Game will be disqualified from the Game by the referees and may be disqualified from the Event by the Organizers. Independent thereof, the Organizers may disqualify Players from the Event for acts of violence, verbal or physical aggression, interference in Game results or other unsportsmanlike acts, or any conduct deemed by the Organizers to jeopardize the safety of Event participant or to be unlawful or indecent. The Organizers may also disqualify the entire Team from the Event if the other Team members are determined to have contributed to the disqualifying conduct. The Organizers decisions with regard to disqualification are final. Article 16: Prizes The total prize pool for the Event is One Hundred Five Thousand US Dollars (US $105,000.00), to be distributed as follows: Each Team winning a Game during pool play, but excluding any Pool Tie-Break Game, will receive a prize of One Thousand US Dollars (US $1,000.00) to be distributed equally between Players on that Team. Each Team winning a Game during the first round, second round, and consolation round of the Event bracket stage will receive a prize of One Thousand US Dollars (US $1,000.00) to be distributed equally between Players on that Team. The Team winning the Event s bracket stage will receive a prize of Fifty Thousand US Dollars (US $50,000.00) to be distributed equally between Players on that Team. Prize winners will be required to complete a Prize release and related tax forms prior to receiving prize payment. Players are responsible for all taxes related to awarded prizes. The Organizers shall have no tax obligations with respect to prizes beyond providing Players with tax reporting forms.
