KICKERS The Rebels hit the road for Athens, Ga. Thursday to begin a three-game road stretch to end the regular season. Ole Miss is in search of its fourth 10-win season under head coach Matt Mott, and fourth in the last five years. The Rebels are coming off a thrilling 2-1 win over Texas A&M on Friday where they scored two late goals in the second half to claim their first home win over the Aggies. The road to Orange Beach, Ala. for the SEC Tournament is tight heading into action this week, with just four points separating the fourth through eighth-place teams. Ole Miss sits eighth, while Georgia is 14th. If the regular season ended today, Ole Miss would qualify for the SEC Tournament as the No. 8 seed and face No. 9 seed Alabama in the opening round on Oct. 31. The top six seeded teams receive a bye into Wednesday s second round of play, and the bottom four teams (No seeds) face each other in first round matchups. Ole Miss is overall against Georgia and in games played in Athens. The two teams didn t play last year, with the last meeting in Athens coming in 2013, a 3-1 win for the Rebels. The Rebels have won three-straight road games, all of which were 2-1 victories (Tulsa, Kentucky, Alabama). In the latest NCAA RPI release on Monday, Ole Miss checked in at No. 50. The Rebels also rank 40th in overall strength of schedule and 19th in non-conference strength of schedule. Sophomore CeCe Kizer has come on strong as of late with 11 points in her last six games, and is second on the team with 16 points. She scored the game-winner over Texas A&M in the 82nd minute, her fifth goal of the year. Sophomore goalkeeper Marnie Merritt continues to climb up the career record charts, sitting fifth in goals allowed average (1.23), eighth in saves (148), sixth in goalkeeper wins (23) and sixth in shutouts (11). In SEC play, five different players have found the net, while three additional players have recorded assists. 3 SCOUTING GEORGIA Led by second-year head coach Billy Lesesne, the Bulldogs are overall and 1-7 in SEC play. Picked 11th in the SEC Preseason Poll, Georgia currently sits at the bottom of the league standings with three games left. The Bulldogs lone win in league action came just two outings ago, a 3-0 shutout over LSU in Athens. Of Georgia s seven SEC losses, two have been decided by just one score, a 1-0 defeat to No. 8 Texas A&M, and 2-1 loss at No. 12 Arkansas. The Bulldogs other three wins have come against non-conference opponents in Samford (3-1), Cal State Fullerton (2-0) and Kennesaw State (1-0). As a team Georgia is averaging 1.13 goals per game and 14.7 shots per contest, while allowing 1.93 goals per match on average. Marion Crowder, an SEC Preseason Watch List player, leads the team with six goals and one assist, and also leads the team in total shots with 57. Lauren Tanner and Mariel Gutierrez, another watch list player, both have two goals. Tanner also leads the team with five assists, while Gutierrez has three. The Bulldogs goalkeeper, Louise Hogrell, has played all but 15 minutes in goal, and has made 78 saves with 29 goals allowed with three shutouts on the year. SERIES HISTORY - GEORGIA Ole Miss and Georgia have played a tighly-contested series over the years, with the Bulldogs holding the slight advantage, With the two teams not facing off in 2015, the last matchup came in 2014, a 1-1 (2OT) draw in Oxford. Ole Miss last game in Athens came in 2013, which resulted in a 3-1 victory for the Rebels. Both sides have each won four games in the series all-time in Athens with also one tie. Overall, five of the Rebels wins in the series have been shutouts with six being decided by one just one goal. LAST TIME OUT Ole Miss hosted Texas A&M last Friday in Senior Night and the home finale, a match that featured all secondhalf scoring and a comeback from the Rebel offense. After playing to a 0-0 draw through the opening period, Texas A&M scored the game s first goal seven minutes into the second half, but the advantage held for only 20 minutes. In the 75th minute, Bella Fiorenzo was awared a free kick and connected with a perfectly-angled shot to tie it up, 1-1. Just seven minutes later, CeCe Kizer found open space near the top of the box and launched in the game-winner, sealing Ole Miss first-ever home victory over the Aggies. 7 ROOKIE REBELS Suiting up for the first time as a division I athlete this season are seven freshmen Rebels hailing from six different states. Two Gatorade High School Players of the Year highlight the class in Gabby Little (Tennessee) and Alley Houghton (Mississippi). Houghton, an Oxford native from Lafayette High School, is the Mississippi state record holder for career goals with 250, and scored 71 in her senior campaign. Little, Tennessee s player of the year and a NSCAA State Player of the Year, earned 2015 NSCAA High School All-America honors leading Houston HS to two state championships (2013 & 2015). The Rebels also welcome Shannon Maitland from Belleville, Ill., who earned IHSCCA All-Sectional honors three years with Althoff Catholic High School. Grace Waugh (Plano, Texas) joins the program as the only Texan on the 2016 roster, and brings with her state championship experience after leading Plano West Senior to the 2013 State Championship, going with a national ranking of No. 1 by the NSCAA. Maddi Falter enters her freshman campaign as one of two players hailing from Tennessee, and recently won a national championship with her club team, Tennessee SC 16, this summer. Madison Meador joins the Rebels from Ballwin, Mo., where she was a First Team All- America defender according to TopDrawerSoccer. Claire Williams rounds out the class as the third goalkeeper on the depth chart, and brings with her high-caliber experience with state championship time to her credit. ACADEMIC ACCOLADES While the on-field success has been evident, so has the Rebels work in the classroom under head coach Matt Mott. It was announced earlier this month that Ole Miss was a recipient of the NSCAA Team Academic Award for the academic year. The award honors all teams with a cumulative GPA of 3.00 or higher. The Rebels received the award for the sixth-straight season and 12th time in program history after posting the SEC s highest GPA at South Carolina was the next closest school with a 3.51 GPA as nine SEC teams made the list. 4 FORBUS, MERRITT, KIZER REPRESENT OLE MISS ON SEC PRESEASON WATCH LIST The SEC Preseason Watch list, which replaces the former Preseason All-SEC Team, featured three Rebels in sophomore CeCe Kizer, senior Addie Forbus and redshirt sophomore Marnie Merritt. Kizer returns as the defending SEC Freshman of the Year, while Forbus was an All-SEC selection a year ago. Merritt is back for just her second season on the pitch and already ranks in the top-10 in career goals allowed average, career saves and career shutouts. REBELS PICKED EIGHTH IN PRESEASON COACHES POLL Ole Miss was picked eighth in the SEC Preseason Coaches Poll ahead of the 2016 season. The Rebels are coming off their first NCAA Sweet 16 appearance after a banner year with 14 victories, tied for third most in school history. Florida was tabbed the favorite to win the league title, while Texas A&M and Auburn checked in second and third, respectively SEC PRESEASON COACHES POLL Team Points 1. 5 OLE MISS ON NATIONAL TV The Rebels played three-straight home games on national TV from Sept Oct. 9, defeating Mississippi State in the Magnolia Cup (Sept. 22, 3-0), while falling to No. 15 Arkansas in a close 2-1 decision (Sept. 25) and No. 16 Florida, 3-0 (Oct. 9). Ole Miss holds a record all-time in TV games, including a mark in matches on SEC Network. MERRITT NAMED SEC DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK Following back-to-back shutouts to open the 2016 season, Marnie Merritt earned the SEC s first Defensive Player of the Week award. The weekly award is the second of Merritt s career after she was named SEC Freshman of the Week on Oct. 12 last season. Merritt s start to the season went just as well as the team s 2-0 start as she didn t allow a goal all weekend. In Friday s opener with Louisiana-Lafayette, the Huntersville, N.C. native only had to defend four shots, none of which were on target. In Sunday s match versus Northwestern State, Merritt made three saves and recorded her second-straight shutout to begin just her sophomore campaign. ATTENDANCE NUMBERS SOAR A year after setting the regular season attendance record (10,386), the Rebels nearly broke it again this season, finishing with 10,049 fans in its 11-game home slate. That mark ranks 17th overall in the NCAA in total attendance and sixth in the SEC. The Rebels finished with an average attendance per game of 914, 32nd in the nation. Eight of the top-10 largest crowds in school history have all come under head coach Matt Mott, including the eighth-largest crowd of 1,335 in the 2016 season opener against Louisiana-Lafayette (8/19), and the 10th-largest of 1,278 vs. Mississippi State in the Magnolia Cup on Sept SECONDS IS ALL IT TOOK Last season s offensive theme was early scoring. Seven times the Rebels scored within the first five minutes of a match, and the 2016 campaign began in similar fashion. 42 seconds into the 2016 season against Louisiana, senior Addie Forbus found the net for the first score of the season. In the contest with Northwestern State, the Rebels came out firing with 31 shots, the most in a single game since Aug. 31, 2012 (Little Rock). Sixteen of those were on target forcing the Lady Demons goalkeeper to make 13 saves. DEGREES IN HAND Three Rebels are playing their senior campaigns with undergraduate degrees in hand in Melissa Capocaccia, Sara Coleman and Georgia Russell. Coleman and Capocaccia both completed their undergraduate studies in three years, while Russell actually moved away from Oxford at the end of last season, but returned to play her final year of eligibility. Capocaccia, who earned her undergrad in Communication Sciences and Disorders, is pursuing a Masters in that same field, while Coleman earned a Bachelor s in Elementary Education and is pursuing a Masters of Education in Elementary Education. Russell is pursuing her Masters in Accountancy after earning her undergrad degree in that same field. OLE MISS SOCCER QUICK FACTS GENERAL INFORMATION Location...Oxford, Miss. Founded... Through 16 contests, she s just three shy of tying her season goal total from a year ago (11) and is tied for 65th nationally in goals with eight. She s also 73rd in the nation in total points (20) and 65th in game-winning goals (3). The Amory, Mississippi native has jumped into the top-10 in career records in both career goals and assists. Forbus is in a three-way tie for sixth all-time in school history with 30 scores, and sits sixth in career assists with 21, just two shy of the top three. She s also seventh in career points with 81. FORBUS JOINS ELITE COMPANY IN RECORD BOOKS Forbus seven goals through the first four matches of the year marked yet another asterisk in the record book. The senior is just the second player ever in the 22-year history of Ole Miss Soccer to score seven goals within the first four matches of the season. Back in 1998, Tammy Zegledi posted seven and went on to score 10 that season and 38 in her career, which ranks third all-time in school history. HARKNETT S LATE SCORE SINKS TROJANS Ole Miss and Troy looked to be headed for overtime in Sunday s non-conference matchup in Oxford (9/4) with Troy, but senior Gretchen Harknett had other plans. After a defensive battle for 86 minutes, Harknett notched the game-winner at the 86:58 mark thanks to an assist from Addie Forbus, securing a tight 1-0 victory for the Rebels. REBELS CLOSE NON-CONFERENCE SLATE WITH INSPIRING WIN Ole Miss headed into Sunday s matchup at Tulsa on a three-game losing streak, but the streak came to an end thanks to the Rebels second-half comeback. After going down 1-0 in the 10th minute, Ole Miss came out in the second half strong as senior Gretchen Harknett punched in the equalizer from 12 yards out. Exactly 10 minutes later, senior Addie Forbus dribbled down field, beat two defenders and fired off the game-winner from 15 yards out to seal the win for the Rebels. The come-from-behind effort marked the first time this season Ole Miss would fight back from being down at half to win the match. FINDING THE RIGHT FIT Through 16 matches, head coach Matt Mott has drawn up nine different starting lineups. After starting the year with identical lineups against Louisiana and Northwestern State, the Rebels made a switch at midfield that lasted for two contests against Memphis and Lipscomb. The non-conference match at Michigan brought the third different starting 11, as did games versus Missouri, South Alabama, LSU, Mississippi State, Kentucky and Alabama. Even with nine different lineup combinations, six of the personnel on field have remained the same (Merritt, GK; Forbus, F; Harknett, F; Kizer, MF; MF; Harbin, D; Capocaccia, D; Meador, D). Furthermore, 18 different Rebels have starts this season, including five true freshmen. GRUELING FINAL STRETCH LEFT FOR REBELS In the first eight games of the season, Ole Miss had to leave Oxford only once, and went 4-3 in the seven home contests within a 24-day period. Now, Ole Miss will play three games in three different states within one week to close out the 2016 regular season. The Rebels are the only team in the SEC that will play their final three matches all on the road, with contests at Georgia (Oct. 20), at Vanderbilt (Oct. 23) and at No. 2 South Carolina (Oct. 27). REACH THE BEACH With the final three games left in the regular season, the road to Orange Beach, Ala. for the SEC Tournament is tightening up. Of the 14 teams in the league, the top 10 qualify for the postseason tournament based off point total, with the top six receiving byes into the second round. The bottom four finishers in the regular season (teams 7-10 in the standings), will play each other (No. 7/10 seed, No. 8/9 seed) in the first round, Oct. 31, to determine the top two seeds opponents for Wednesday s (Nov. 2) second round of play. Prior to this week s play, the Rebels currently sit eighth with 12 total points, just one point off sixth. Four points overall separate the fourth through eighth-place teams, as the race for the tournament is still wide open. COMEBACK KIDS Of the Rebels last five wins, three have resulted in comeback fashion. Outside of a dominating win over Mississippi State at home on Sept. 22, Ole Miss other four recent wins have a lot in common; all four were 2-1 wins, and three of those were on the road. Back in the non-conference match at Tulsa, the Golden Hurricane went up 1-0 very early (9th minute), but two second-half goals (50th, 60th minute) led to a 2-1 Rebels victory. The next road trip at Kentucky was also similar in fashion, except the Wildcats broke a scoreless tie in the 78th minute, before a goal with six minutes left, and game-winner in double overtime sealed the win in Lexington. Five days later, the Rebels again had to score late to win over the Crimson Tide, breaking a 1-1 tie in the 70th minute. In the most recent outing, the Rebels again fell behind early in the second half, but used two late scores (75th, 82nd minute) to win over the Aggies. 6
