At in SEC play, the Rebels are tied for sixth in the league table with seven points. Senior defender Ella Frischknecht scored the Rebels lone goal against the Tigers, her second score in as many games. Entering this season, Frischknecht had scored just four times in her career and just once as a Rebel. However, the BYU transfer now ranks tied for third on the team with three goals this season. Marnie Merritt made a season-high nine saves last Sunday against then No. 5 Texas A&M, one shy of her career-high set last season against the Aggies. Making an incredible diving save with less than 10 seconds left in the match, Merritt became the first keeper all season to hold the powerful A&M offense to a single goal. Following her stellar performance in goal, Merritt was named the SEC Defensive Player of the Week. It was the second time in the senior s vaunted career that she has received the honor and the first since her sophomore season in CeCe Kizer currently ranks sixth in the nation in goals (11) and fifth in points (26). Ole Miss continues to climb in the NCAA RPI report. Following the draw against Texas A&M, the Rebel climbed to No. 52 in this week s report. Since the initial report came out two weeks ago, Ole Miss has moved up 28 spots from No. 80. The Rebels lead the all-time series against Arkansas , thanks in large part to an 11-match winning streak from Ole Miss and Arkansas split their two matchups last season. With four-consecutive wins in league play, Arkansas is tied for second in the SEC with 12 points. Junior Forward Tori Cannata scored both goals in the Razorbacks 2-1 overtime win over LSU. 3 SCOUTING ARKANSAS Unbeaten in their last five matches, including a four-match winning streak, Arkansas comes to Oxford with a overall record, tied for second in the SEC table at While the Razorbacks have yet to be shut out in 2018, the goals haven t typically come in bunches, resulting in an eigth place ranking in the SEC with 24 goals, good for 1.85 per match. Arkansas hasn t been shy to test their opponnent s defense, though, having racked up the third most shots in the league at 241. The Razorbacks also rank in the middle of the pack defensively, having allowed 15 goals in their 13 matches. After bagging both of Arkansas goals in its 2-1 overtime victory over LSU on Thursday, junior forward Tori Cannata leads the Razorbacks with six goals this season, chipping in an assist for a team-high 13 points. Right on Cannata s heels is junior midfielder Kayla McKeon with five scores on the season. Meanwhile, sophomore midfielder Taylor Malham paces the Hogs and is tied for the SEC lead with seven assists, while also scoring a pair of goals herself. The Razorbacks have had three different players protecting their goal this season. Sophomore Rachel Harris has started eight matches, allowing 10 goals in her 717:43 of action, posting a.730 save percentage with a 1.25 goal against average. Fellow sophomore Taylor Beitz has made six appearances and three starts, allowing just three goals in 388:10. Beitz has a perfect record in goal, making 17 saves for a.850 save percentage and a 0.70 GAA. Redshirt-freshman Alexis Bach has only appeared in three matches but has made a pair of starts, registering a 1.33 GAA with two goals surrendered in 135:00. SERIES HISTORY - ARKANSAS Sunday s affair will be the 23rd all-time meeting between Ole Miss and Arkansas, with the Rebels holding a solid advantage in the series. From Ole Miss was nothing short of dominant against the Hogs, running a 11-match winning streak, though seven of those wins came by a single tally. Recently, it s been a very even matchup, with the two sides split at over the last five meetings. In last season s two meetings, the Rebels took out Arkansas 1-0 in Fayetteville before the Razorbacks got revenge in the SEC tournament, bouncing Ole Miss in the first round by the same 1-0 margin. LAST MEETING - ARKANSAS (10/29/17) The Rebels battled not one but two opponents in their SEC Tournament loss to Arkansas, the Razorbacks and the woodwork. Ole Miss hit the frame of goal twice during the match as Taylor Malham s 32nd-minute goal stood as the game-winner for Arkansas. Less than 15 minutes into the match, CeCe Kizer found Gabby Little on a darting run but the thensophomore was denied the match s opening goal by the post. Shortly thereafter, Malham scored off a set piece to put the Hogs ahead. The Rebs came out of halftime firing on all cylinders and threw numbers forward in attack but time and again were denied the equalizer. Ole Miss best chance came late on, with Grace Johnson unleashing a curling shot that too found the woodwork. The ball fell kindly to Kizer but the Rebels all-time leading scorer uncharacteristically was unable to put her shot on goal, sending the ball over the frame. USING HER NOGGIN Over her two seasons in Oxford, senior center back Ella Frischknecht has been more known for her defensive prowess than her production on the offensive side of the pitch. However, over the past two matches the BYU transfer has been Ole Miss top producer, scoring in each of the past two matches on headers off of set pieces. Entering this season, the former Ella Johnson had scored just four times in her collegiate career, with three of those tallies coming during her freshman season in Provo. Through 14 matches in 2018, Frischknecht has nearly doubled her goal scoring mark, finding the back of the net three times. THE REBELS RECORD WHEN... 4 MERRITT TABBED SEC DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK Facing one of the nation s top offenses in Texas A&M, Marnie Merritt was nearly unbeatable in goal for the Rebels, helping Ole Miss secure a crucial point with a 1-1 draw against the fifth-ranked Aggies. For her efforts, Merritt was selected as the SEC Defensive Player of the Week, the second such honor of her career and first since Despite having to play an additional 20 minutes of overtime, the senior keeper became the first goalie all season to hold the Aggies to a single goal. Merritt made a season-high nine saves against the Aggies, one shy of her career-best mark of 10 stops made last season at Texas A&M. The Huntersville, North Carolina native came up biggest when it mattered most, making three saves in the second overtime period, including an incredible diving stop to deny the game-winner with three seconds to go. RECORD WATCH: MARNIE MERRITT CeCe Kizer isn t the only Rebel with a chance to make some history in Having been stationed between the posts for just about every second of Ole Miss schedule over the past four seasons, fifth-year senior Marnie Merritt is closing in on a pair of career records herself. Merritt has registered 21 clean sheets in her Rebel career, two shy of breaking the school record for shutouts in a career. The Huntersville, North Carolina product is also zeroing in on the all-time record for wins in a career, needing just four more to surpass Kelly McCormick for the Ole Miss record. REBELS MAKE A MOVE IN THE RPI REPORT Coming in at No. 80 in the first NCAA RPI report of the season, continues to make its way up the rankings as conference play rolls on. After moving up 15 spots to No. 65 last week, the Rebels climbed an additional 13 places following the draw against Texas A&M, coming in at No. 52. However, after falling to No. 96-ranked Missouri on Thursday, the Rebels place in the RPI could be in jeopardy. Ole Miss has a chance to notch a quality win on Sunday, taking on No. 32 Arkansas. KIZER S MILESTONE DAY LIFTS REBELS OVER NO. 9 AUBURN CeCe Kizer had a match to remember last Sunday at Auburn, breaking a pair of Ole Miss records to lead the Rebels to a huge win over the No. 9 Tigers. After Channing Foster brought the Rebs level in the first half with a laser of a strike from 20 yards out, the second half belonged to the senior from Overland Park, Kansas. Kizer wasted no time in pulling Ole Miss ahead in the second half, scoring less than 30 seconds in to break the Rebels all-time career goals record with her 45th in an Ole Miss kit. Following a response from the Tigers, Kizer scored one of the finest goals of her career, taking on the entire Auburn defense on a 75-yard run to notch the game-winner. The score carried even further significance, setting a new all-time mark for career points at Ole Miss at 110 for her career. The victory gave Ole Miss its first win over a ranked opponent since 2015 and the first over a top-10 opponenet since REBS OPEN SEC PLAY WITH A DUB For the first time in five years, Ole Miss kicked off SEC play with a victory, defeating Alabama 1-0 in Tuscaloosa behiund Molly Martin s 45th-minute headed goal. The Rebels had to survive a furocious push from Alabama in the second half, as the Crimson Tide launched 13 shots at the Ole Miss goal, though only three were on frame. Marnie Merritt and the Ole Miss defense came up big to preserve the narrow lead, with Merritt making all three saves when called upon and the defense selling out to make four blocks in the contest. The win was the first time since 2003 that the Rebels posted a shutout in the conference opener. KIZER S BIG OPENING WEEK Coming into her final season as a Rebel, senior attacker CeCe Kizer came out of the gates on fire, scoring four times in the first two matches. Kizer also issued an assist in the Rebels opening goal of the campaign. Finishing the week as the NCAA s leader in goals and points, the senior was recognized for her efforts, bringing in a haul of weekly awards. Not only was Kizer selected as the SEC Offensive Player of the Week, she also earned a spot on the TopDrawerSoccer Team of the Week. To top it all off, the United Soccer Coaches named Kizer the National Player of the Week, the first time a Rebel has ever received the laurel. HOT STARTS BECOMING COMMONPLACE IN OXFORD Much like a year ago, when Ole Miss scored 16 goals in the opening week of the season, the Rebels put on a scoring display to kickoff the 2018 campaign against Louisiana and WKU. After clobbering the Ragin Cajuns 6-0, Ole Miss took down WKU 4-0 two nights later. The 10 goals was the secondhighest mark in the NCAA, two behind Mercer. 5 KIZER TABBED TO MAC HERMANN TROPHY WATCH LIST After ranking third in the NCAA in goals and points per game in 2017, senior attacker CeCe Kizer established herself as one of college soccer s most dangerous offensive players. The Overland Park, Kansas native received recognition for her accomplishments when she was selected to the MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List, awarded annually to the most outstanding player in the nation. Ole Miss has never had a player win the prestigious Hermann Trophy, though Rebel great Rafaelle Souza was named a semifinalist in NEW MASCOT, WHO DIS? Ole Miss new on-field mascot, Tony, was unveiled Aug. 11 at the annual Meet the Rebels event and will roam the sideline at Ole Miss events during the 2018 season. Ole Miss Landshark mascot is named in honor of the first Rebel to throw Fins Up, former football player Tony Fein. Fein, an Army veteran who served a one-year tour in the Iraq War before arriving in Oxford, was a two-year letterman after transferring from Scottsdale (Ariz.) Community College. He was the 2008 recipient of the Pat Tillman Award by the Military Order of the Purple Heart. Fein passed away in October 2009, but his legacy at Ole Miss continues through the Landshark. At Ole Miss, Landshark is a term that was first adopted by the Rebel football team s defensive unit and later extended to the rest of the team and all Rebel athletic squads. As part of that identity, players celebrate big plays by putting a hand to their forehead in the shape of a shark fin. In October 2017, the university announced the Landshark as the official mascot of the Ole Miss Rebels. KIZER SELECTED TO TDS BEST XI FIRST TEAM As further recognition as one of the top players in the country, CeCe Kizer was named to the TopDrawerSoccer Preaseason Best XI First Team, consisting of a squad made up of the top talent across Division I women s soccer. Kizer is one of three forwards on the team, being joined by Florida State s Deyna Castellanos and Stanford s Catarina Macario. Following her junior season in 2017, Kizer was named to the TDS Best XI Second Team. SENIOR ATTACKER MOVES INTO TOP-10 IN PLAYER RANKINGS Having received a myriad of preseason honors prior to the start of the 2018 season, it s no surprise that CeCe Kizer began the 2018 season inside the top-10 of TopDrawerSoccer s player rankings. After being ranked No. 17 in the final rankings in 2017, the senior moved up to No. 9 to start the season. The native Kansan is the second-highest ranked player in the SEC, just a few spots behind Tennessee s Katie Cousins at No. 7. FOUR REBELS MAKE SEC PRESEASON WATCH LIST Four Rebels were selected to the SEC Preseason Watch List, recognizing the players to watch in the league for the 2018 campaign. CeCe Kizer and Marnie Merritt made the list for the thirdconsecutive year, while Channing Foster and Mary Kate Smith made their debut on the watch list. REBELS PICKED SEVENTH IN PRESEASON COACHES POLL After finishing the 2017 season in ninth-place in the SEC standings, Ole Miss has been picked to rise a couple of positions in 2018, being selected seventh in the SEC Preseason Coaches Poll. Florida was tabbed as the favorite to win the title, followed by Texas A&M, Tennessee and South Carolina SEC PRESEASON COACHES POLL Team 1. Florida 8. Alabama 2. Texas A&M 9. Vanderbilt 3. Georgia EXPERIENCE PLENTIFUL FOR 2018 REBS When fans look out across the pitch during the 2018 season, they will see most of the faces they became familiar with a season ago. With only four seniors departed from last year s squad, the production returning for Ole Miss is staggering. Even with last season s leader in minutes, Liza Harbin, having completed her eligibility, the Rebels return just over 80% of their minutes played from last season. Both nationally broadcasted contests will come during conference action, with the first matchup televised to the masses set for the October 11 trip to Baton Rouge to battle the Tigers of LSU. Just 10 days later, the SEC Network Crew will make the trip to Oxford for the battle for the Magnolia Cup against bitter rival Mississippi State, slated for October 21 at the Ole Miss Soccer Stadium. Ole Miss has retained the cup since 2013, drawing level with the Bulldogs in last season s matchup after three-consecutive Rebel victories. All non-nationally televised home matches for Ole Miss will be available online through WatchESPN and the ESPN app as part of the SEC Network + digital streaming platform. Richard Cross (play-by-play) and Ian Banner (analyst) will be back in the broadcast booth to handle the calls. LITTLE, SMITH NAMED TEAM CAPTAINS FOR 2018 With 11 uperclassmen in the squad, Ole Miss is not short on leadership for the 2018 season. However, junior Gabby Little and senior Mary Kate Smith have been particularly singled out by their teammates for their ability to lead, being named the Rebels two captains for the season. Little, a winger from Collierville, Tennessee, led the Rebs in assists a year ago, ranking third in the conference with eight helpers to go along with a pair of goals, ranking third on the team with 12 points. Smith is in her second season in Oxford after transfering from Jones County Junior College, scoring twice and dishing out seven assists in Smith will be transitioning to a new position this season, making the move from the right wing opposite side of Little to the back line as a fullback. REBEL SOCCER A FAMILY AFFAIR For the second straight season, Ole Miss centerback pairing features the combination of sisters Grace Johnson and Ella Frischknecht. The former Ella Johnson, Frischknecht married her husband Blake, a junior on Utah Valley s men s soccer team, this summer at a ceremony in the Dominican Republic. Last season, the duo started together in 19-of-20 matches, helping the Rebels to eight shutouts. The duo aren t the only family pairing for the Rebels in 2018, with Oxford natives Alley and Maddie Houghton both staying home for their collegiate careers. Alley, a 5-3 forward, is in her third season at Ole Miss, having scored four goals and dispensing five assists in her career. Maddy, a 5-8 midfielder/defender, is a member of Ole Miss freshman class after graduating from Lafayette High School. The two sets of sisters make up half of the four sister pairings for Ole Miss during the Matt Mott era. HISKEY RETURNS TO OXFORD This season there is a familiar face on the Ole Miss sideline. In January, Rebel defensive great Jessica Hiskey was hired as the program s new assistant coach. Hiskey, a stalwart of the Ole Miss back line from , works with the Rebel defenders. Hiskey started 74 matches and logged over 7,000 minutes on the pitch during her career. She found the back of the net 10 times in a Rebel kit, dishing out five assists. During her senior campaign, Hiskey helped lead Ole Miss to its first-ever NCAA Sweet-16, starting all 23 contests on the year. She became the first Rebel defender to be named All-SEC since 2011, collecting Second Team honors after registering five points on two goals and one assist. After completing her collegiate career and graduating from Ole Miss, Hiskey played two years professionally in Sweden. REBEL TEAMMATES FACEOFF IN WPSL SEMIFINALS While typically pairing up as part of Ole Miss corps of attacking players, Channing Foster and Tara Sullivan faced off as opponents this summer while playing in the Women s Premier Soccer League (WPSL). Foster helped her Chicago Red Stars Reserves squad to the North Conference Championship with a record, while Sullivan and Fire & Ice SC (based in Belleville, Ill.), took the Heartland Conference crown with a record. The two teams advanced to the Central Region Championship game, with Foster scoring the winning-goal in a 1-0 victory for the Red Stars Reserves. Both teams advanced to the WPSL Championship, each being knocked out in the semifinal round. ONE MORE Each season, the senior class is tasked with creating a new team motto for the fall. This year s class of Ella Frischknecht, CeCe Kizer, Marisa Kutchma, Marnie Merritt, Mary Kate Smith and Tara Sullivan chose One More. The One More mantra is borrowed from The Program, a leadership and team building program the Rebels participated in this past summer.
