10 Last Time Out... Women s Basketball Downed at Georgia Southern, Saturday, Dec. 16, 2013 STATESBORO, Ga. The Wofford women s basketball team was defeated by Georgia Southern, 79-70, in Southern Conference action on Monday night from GSU s Hanner Fieldhouse. Wofford (2-7, 0-2 SoCon) trailed by as many as 26 points in the second half, but came back to cut the deficit to 10 points with 2:02 remaining. The Terriers rallied behind 56.7-percent shooting in the second half, its best half of the season, but Georgia Southern (3-7, 1-1 SoCon) kept pace at 48.4 percent. In the end, the large margin was just too much to come back from and GSU held on thanks in part to outrebounding the Terriers Junior Lauren Kirby earned her first collegiate double-double with a game-high 20 points and 10 rebounds. Kirby s 20 points marked a career-high on 10-of-12 shooting. She became the first Terrier this season to sink 10 or more field goals and the first to record a double-double. Sophomore guards Chanel Stokes and Jordan Frazier joined Kirby in double figures. Stokes tied her career-high with 15 points, going 11-of-12 from the foul line, while Frazier put up 14 points and added four steals. Frazier s four steals were right around her season average of 4.4, which is second best in the NCAA. For Georgia Southern, Anna Claire Knight had a team-high 19 points on 7-of-15 shooting. Knight, who hit a buzzer-beater to help GSU defeat Wofford last year in Statesboro, added three assists and two steals. She was joined in double figures by Lacie Dowling s 12 points and 11 from Briana Jones. Sierra Kirkland tied Kirby s game-high 10 rebounds. For the game, the Terriers shot 42.9 percent (24-56 FG), marking its best shooting night of the season. Wofford was 21-of-27 (77.8 percent) from the charity stripe, but hurt by a 1-of-14 (7.1 percent) showing from long range. Georgia Southern shot 47.4 percent (27-57 FG) and was 6-of-18 (33.3 percent) from deep. Fleming got the scoring started off a nice dish from Frazier inside, giving Wofford the game s initial lead. Frazier followed with a steal on GSU s next possession, but the Terriers did not capitalize. Georgia Southern responded with the next six points as Wofford was coming up empty from long range. The Terriers were 0-for-5 from three in the early going, while GSU s Lacie Dowling drained a pair of treys to award her team a 9-4 lead. Brian Jones put the Eagles ahead 11-4, before Stokes could get to the line for a pair. The GSU lead extended to 13-6 on Danielle Spencer s first basket of the night. Meanwhile, senior Logan Morris was sent to the bench with early foul trouble. After scoring a field goal 45 seconds into the game, Wofford did not get its next until the 11:06 mark as Kirby ended the run with her first points. Georgia Southern led 14-8 when Wofford finally got going, scoring the next seven points to take its first lead, Frazier earned her first points of the night during the run with a 3-pointer off the glass, and earned three more the old-fashioned way to give the Terriers the lead with 8:33 remaining in the half. Again, Georgia Southern responded. This time, the Eagles scored seven straight points before Frazier made another layup to mark 10 of Wofford s last 11 points. With GSU up 23-19, an 11-2 Eagle run ensued over the half s final three minutes. It was all part of a huge 20-4 Georgia Southern run after the Terriers led Kirby ended the half with a jumper in the final seconds, putting Wofford down at the break. The Terriers shot 26.9 percent in the first half on 7-of-26 from the field. GSU also took 26 shots, but made 12 for a 46.2 percentage. The big gap was in rebounds, where GSU held a edge. Frazier led Wofford with 10 points at the break and Stokes had five. Kirby had only four points before going off for 16 in the final 20 minutes. Georgia Southern could not miss to start the second half. Farmer called a timeout after the Eagles scored on each of their first three possessions. At the same time, Kirby got hot and put down Wofford s first three buckets of the half. Her fourth got it back to a 14-point game, Twelve consecutive GSU points followed, giving the Eagles their largest lead of 26 points, with 12:11 on the clock. Knight was a big part of the run, hitting a jumper and a 3-pointer before awarding GSU its largest lead with a layup, scoring her 19th and final point of the evening. Senior Erin Frost put a stop to the bleeding with her first points of the night. The two sides went on to trade baskets over the course of eight minutes and Georgia Southern led by 22 with 4:23 remaining. Wofford gave it one last effort, making GSU earn what once looked like a blowout. Kirby got it started with a jumper to cut the lead to 20, sparking a 13-1 run capped by a GSU turnover that led to a Logan Morris jumper. Suddenly, it was a 10-point ball game, 72-62, with 2:02 on the clock. Rebounding helped GSU hold on. Knight missed a jumper with 1:24 to play, but Jones grabbed the offensive board and was fouled to earn two points at the line. By the time the Terriers got it back to a 10-point game, there were just 31 seconds remaining. Freshman Kentra Washington came up with a steal on the ensuing inbound, but missed the layup and GSU rebounded, holding on for its first SoCon victory of the season. The Wofford women s basketball team is back in action on Thursday when it travels to Huntington, W. Va., to take on Marshall. Tip is scheduled for noon. Terrier Notes - Lauren Kirby had a career-high 20 points and added 10 rebounds to mark her first collegiate double-double and Wofford s first of the season. - Chanel Stokes tied a career-high with 15 points. - Jordan Frazier scored 14 points and had four steals. - Wofford had its best shooting night of the season at 42.9 percent, and its best half of the season with a 56.7 percentage in the second half. - Aliyah Johnson scored a career-high five points. - Georgia Southern improves to 31-5 all-time against Wofford.
