2 Skip Prosser Head Coach U.S. Merchant Marine Academy (1972) Sixth Year at Wake Forest (.681) / 5 Years 14th Year Overall (.679) / 13 Years Personal Full Name George Edward "Skip" Prosser Birth Date November 3, 1950 Birth Place Pittsburgh, PA Wife Nancy Sons Scott (28) and Mark (27) College United States Merchant Marine Academy (1972) Degree Nautical Science Graduate School West Virginia University (1980) Master's Degree Secondary Education High School Carnegie (PA) High School High School Sports Played Football, basketball Championships 2003 ACC Regular Season 1998 A-10 Conference Tournament 1998 A-10 Conference West Regular Season 1997 A-10 Conference West Regular Season 1995 MCC Regular Season 1994 MAAC Tournament Skip Prosser, who begins his sixth season as head coach at Wake Forest in , owns a bio full of impressive statistics. That's not surprising, considering Prosser has been a successful Division I head coach now for 13 years. However, perhaps the most glaring statistic that demonstrates just how far Prosser has taken the Demon Deacon program is this: over the last five years combined -- or since Prosser arrived at WFU -- only Duke (62) and Maryland (49) own more ACC victories than Prosser's Deacons (47). Since arriving in Winston-Salem prior to the season, Prosser has turned Wake Forest into one of the nation's top programs. In his first five seasons, the Demon Deacons have averaged more than 22 wins per year. Wake Forest, under Prosser, has appeared in postseason play every year, including four straight NCAA Tournament appearances from Prosser has compiled a record of (.681) in five seasons at Wake Forest. His career record stands at (.679) in 13 seasons overall. What Wake Forest has accomplished under Prosser is remarkable. Consider: His winning percentage at Wake Forest is the highest by a Deacon head coach in more than 75 years. Prosser owns the ninth-highest winning percentage in ACC history. His Deacon teams won at least 21 games in each of his first four seasons. Including his tenure at Xavier, Prosser's teams have won at least 21 games in nine of the last 10 seasons. Prosser is (.588) in ACC games, meaning his teams have averaged 9.4 league wins per year in arguably the nation's strongest conference. The Demon Deacons, in 2003, won the ACC regular season title outright for the first time in more than 40 years. In 2004, Wake advanced to the Sweet 16 round of the NCAA Tournament for the first time since In 2005, Wake Forest rose to No. 1 in the Associated Press poll for the first time in school history. Wake Forest not only went to the NCAA Tournament in each of Prosser's first four seasons, the Deacons advanced to at least the second round of the tournament in each of those seasons. Prior to Prosser's arrival, Wake had not reached the second round of the tournament since Under Prosser, Wake Forest was ranked in the Associated Press poll for a school-record 60 consecutive weeks. The Deacons established a school record for victories (27) in Under Prosser, the Deacons have defeated 18 different teams ranked in the top 25 at tip-off. Wake Forest, in 2003, became the first team in the history of the ACC to lead the nation in rebounding. Prosser was named ACC Coach of the Year in He has coached the ACC Player of the Year (Josh Howard in 2003) and the ACC Rookie of the Year (Chris Paul in 2004). Two of his four recruiting classes at Wake Forest have included McDonald's All-Americans -- Eric Williams in 2002 and Chris Paul in Prosser has coached two NBA first-round draft picks at Wake Forest -- Josh Howard and Chris Paul -- and one second-round selection -- Darius Songaila. What Prosser has accomplished at Wake Forest is not limited to on-the-court success. He has embraced Wake Forest's academic standards and stressed performance in the classroom by his players. Every senior that he has coached at Wake Forest has earned his diploma. From Day One, Prosser has made academics a priority with his players. Mandatory study halls are the norm, class attendance is checked and Prosser even named academic counselor Jane Caldwell the team's "MVP" in With an exciting style of basketball, a strong relationship with the student body and raucous pre-game festivities, Prosser and his staff have turned Lawrence Joel Coliseum into one of the loudest facilities around. With black and gold tie-dyed T-shirts filling the arena and the mascot riding a Harley-Davidson, the atmosphere in Wake's home arena has turned 180 degrees. In , for the first time in school history, Wake Forest sold completely out of season tickets. There were 14,665 tickets sold or distributed to every home game. Prosser and company have made home games more than just a basketball game, but an event, resulting in increased attendance. The Deacons have responded by going at home, including a 24-game homecourt win streak and a 16-0 record in Joel Coliseum in and another 16-0 mark at home in Prosser's 13 years as a head coach have been a model of consistency. His teams have won at least 21 games in nine of the last 10 seasons. His teams have advanced to the NCAA Tournament nine times and to the NIT three times. Prosser's overall record of (.679) gives him one of the 25 highest winning percentages among all active Division I coaches. "I don't have a career record," Prosser said. "The players won those games." Despite Prosser's modesty, it is impossible to ignore the success that has followed his career. Prosser has won regular season titles in three different leagues (ACC, Atlantic 10, MCC) and postseason conference tournament crowns in two leagues (Atlantic 10, MAAC). He has been named conference Coach of the Year in two different leagues and he is one of just 10 active Division I coaches to lead three different teams into the NCAA Tournament. Prosser, in fact, is the only coach in NCAA history to lead three different schools to the NCAA Tournament in his first year at each school Demon Deacon Basketball

3 Skip Prosser Head Coach In 20 years as a college coach, Prosser has coached in 18 postseason tournaments. Prosser has seen many of his players go on to enjoy successful careers in the NBA and overseas. In 2002, Darius Songaila was taken in the second round of the NBA Draft by the Boston Celtics and he currently plays for the Washington Wizards. Josh Howard was selected in the first round of the 2003 Draft by the Dallas Mavericks. In 2005, Chris Paul was an NBA "lottery pick" and was a near-unanimous selection for NBA Rookie of the Year in At Xavier, Prosser coached players such as David West, James Posey and Torraye Braggs, who played last season in the NBA. Former Musketeers Michael Hawkins, Gary Lumpkin, Lenny Brown and Darnell Williams are also enjoying pro basketball careers. As an assistant at Xavier, Prosser helped recruit future NBA players such as Derek Strong, Aaron Williams, Larry Sykes, Tyrone Hill and Brian Grant. In Prosser's first season at Wake Forest in , he led the Deacons to a record (despite facing seven teams ranked in the top 10), a third-place finish in the highly-competitive ACC and an NCAA Tournament appearance. Prosser led Wake to a 9-7 record in the league, tying for third place behind only two recent NCAA champions -- Maryland and Duke. The Deacons swept rivals North Carolina and NC State, won an NCAA Tournament game for the first time since 1997 and set a school record for points scored, assists and three-point attempts in one season. Only four coaches in the 50-year history of the ACC won more league games in their rookie year than Prosser did. He became the first rookie coach at Wake Forest since 1927 to post a winning record. Prosser was a finalist for the Naismith National Coach of the Year Award. But the season was just a stepping stone. In , Prosser guided Wake Forest to its highest level since the Tim Duncan era. Wake Forest finished the season with a 25-6 overall record and a final No. 8 ranking in the Associated Press poll -- then Wake's highest finish in the poll since The Deacons finished 13-3 and in first place in the ACC for the first time since It was WFU's first outright ACC regular season title in 41 years. Prosser's Deacons were not ranked in any of the preseason polls and were picked to finish as low as seventh in the ACC, but Prosser molded a rotation of seven freshmen and sophomores with All-American senior Josh Howard into one of college basketball's top teams in Wake Forest led the nation in rebounding (+9.6 rebound margin), becoming the first ACC team to ever accomplish that feat. The Deacons were also ranked among the national leaders in field goal percentage defense, free throw percentage, scoring margin and winning percentage. Wake Forest advanced to postseason competition for the 13th consecutive year with an NCAA bid. 4 Skip Prosser Head Coach What They re Saying About Skip Prosser Coach Prosser has done a tremendous job. Of course I love Coach Odom and love what he did for the team over the years, but Coach Prosser really came in and changed the game at Wake and made it a more high-paced game. He brought in a lot of his own guys and has really made us a real contender. -- Tim Duncan "I couldn t have asked for a better situation than to grow up in Winston-Salem and go to school at Wake Forest. Playing against great teams in the ACC night after night and developing my skills under Coach Prosser helped prepare me for life in the NBA. -- Josh Howard Playing in the ACC and developing my game under Coach Prosser and all the assistant coaches prepared me for what I hope is a long career in the NBA. -- Chris Paul They play with passion, energy and fire. Coach Prosser pushes these guys on the floor, but more importantly in the classroom. -- Dick Vitale "Skip Prosser is one of the finest coaches and one of the greatest teachers in college basketball. Prosser has spent his entire life dedicated to teaching and coaching. He has done a magnificent job as a head coach Prosser gets the most out of his players. There is not a coach out there who I admire more than Skip Prosser - He's one of the good guys." -- Jay Bilas As far as I m concerned, he s as good a coach as there is in America. He s an unbelievable choice for Wake Forest. He won t take a back seat to anybody. --- Phil Martelli (St. Joseph s Head Coach) Demon Deacon Basketball Year. He was also named district coach of the year by the NABC and the USBWA, and he was a finalist for the Naismith National Coach of the Year. In , Wake Forest fielded one of the nation's youngest rosters (no scholarship seniors) and faced one of college basketball's most difficult schedules. Prosser helped guide the youthladen team to 21 victories, a third-place finish in the ACC, an ACC-best 14th consecutive postseason appearance and a berth in the NCAA Sweet Sixteen. Along the way, the Deacons rose to as high as No. 3 in the national polls and beat two teams ranked in the top five -- No. 3 Duke and No. 4 North Carolina. The win over North Carolina -- a triple-overtime thriller in Chapel Hill to open the ACC season -- went down as one of the greatest ACC games in the 51-year history of the league. The Deacons ranked third nationally in scoring offense and led the ACC in field goal percentage. Sophomore Justin Gray earned first team All-ACC honors and Chris Paul was named ACC Rookie of the Year. Wake Forest set a number of records and reached a number of firsts in The Deacons, with a record of 27-6, set a school record for single-season victories. In November, Wake rose to No. 1 in the national polls for the first time in the long history of Deacon basketball. The Demon Deacons were ranked no lower than seventh in the national polls from beginning to end and finished with a national AP ranking of fifth. There were other impressive numbers in Wake went 6-3 against ranked teams and 7-1 in games decided by five points or less. The Deacons broke an NCAA record by making 51 consecutive free throws and they finished third nationally in scoring offense. Individually, Chris Paul was a consensus first team All- American -- the second first team All-American in four years to play for Prosser (Josh Howard was the other in 2003) -- and three players were named All-ACC (Paul was first team, Justin Gray and Eric Williams were named to the second team). Paul was an Academic All-American as well. Prosser was named Wake Forest's head coach on April 24, 2001, replacing Dave Odom. Prior to coming to Winston-Salem, Prosser enjoyed success at Xavier University from , compiling a (.695) record in seven seasons. Xavier earned a record of (.669) in conference play during his tenure -- second only to Temple in the Atlantic 10. The Musketeers earned back-to-back Atlantic 10 West regular season crowns in 1997 and In his last five seasons at Xavier, the Musketeers beat crosstown rival Cincinnati four times. Two of those victories came against Bearcat teams ranked No. 1 in the nation. At Xavier, 83 percent of Prosser's players graduated (100 percent of the seniors) -- one of the highest graduation rates in the country. Prosser spent 15 years at Xavier, first as an assistant coach under Pete Gillen for eight seasons. After a one-year stint as head coach at Loyola (Md.) College, Prosser returned to Xavier as the head coach, replacing Gillen. In Prosser's final season at Xavier in , the Musketeers posted a 21-8 record with just one senior in the starting lineup, earning an NCAA Tournament bid. The previous season, , Xavier finished 21-12, securing its fourth straight 20-win season and its fifth 20-win season in six years under Prosser. In , XU earned an 11-5 mark in the Atlantic 10 and went on to capture the league's postseason tournament. In , Xavier won the first of two consecutive Atlantic 10 Conference West Division titles by going 13-3 in the league despite having no seniors among its top six players. Prosser was named the Basketball Times Mideast Coach of the Year and the NABC District 10 Coach of the Year. In , Xavier jumped from the MCC to the Atlantic 10 and many critics doubted the move. The Musketeers lost five of their top six players from the team, but managed to finish with an 8-8 A-10 regular season record. But Prosser's teams went on to silence those critics by going in Atlantic 10 play from Prosser's first Xavier team in won the Midwestern Collegiate Conference regular season title with a perfect 14-0 mark (23-5 overall). Prosser was named the MCC Coach of the Year that season. Prior to taking over as head coach at Xavier, Prosser spent one season ( ) as head coach at Loyola (Md.) College and enjoyed a true Cinderella season. He took over a squad that finished 2-25 the previous season. But Prosser led Loyola to a mark in , making the NCAA Tournament for the only time in that school's history. It marked the biggest turnaround in NCAA Division I basketball in The underdog Greyhounds won three MAAC Tournament games en route to winning the championship and capturing the automatic NCAA bid. Before his stop at Loyola, Prosser spent eight years as the top assistant under Gillen. Prosser was a member of Gillen's first staff at Xavier in During Prosser's time as an Xavier assistant, the Musketeers compiled a record of , capturing five Midwestern Collegiate Conference Tournament championships and five MCC regular season titles while earning seven NCAA Tournament berths. Xavier advanced to at least the second round of the NCAA Tournament in four of seven appearances, including the Sweet 16 in 1990.

Skip Prosser is one of three coaches in NCAA history to twice appear in back-to-back Division I tournaments with different schools: Skip Prosser (Loyola, Md. and Xavier in 1994 and 1995 Xavier and Wake Forest in 2001 and 2002); Bill Self (Tulsa and Illinois in 2000 and 2001 and Illinois and Kansas in 2003 and 2004); Tubby Smith (Tulsa and Georgia in 1995 and 1996 and Georgia and Kentucky in 1997 and 1998). Skip Prosser is the only coach in NCAA history to take three different schools to the NCAA Tournament in his first season at each school (Loyola in 1994, Xavier in 1995 and Wake Forest in 2001). Xavier's recruiting efforts enjoyed great growth during Prosser's time as an assistant. As an assistant coach, he concentrated his efforts on the guards including Byron Larkin, Stan Kimbrough, Jamal Walker, Michael Davenport, Jamie Gladden and Michael Hawkins, all of whom scored more than 1,000 career points. Prosser came to Xavier as an assistant coach in 1985 after an illustrious coaching career on the high school level in Wheeling (WV). He took over as head coach at Central Catholic High School in Wheeling in His six-year ledger read , including a state AA championship in The 1982 team set a school record for victories, finishing His last team, in , made it to the state finals. In all, Prosser guided the Maroon Knights to one state title (1982), five regional championships ( ) and three conference crowns ( ). Dino Gaudio, an assistant at Xavier under Gillen from and currently a Wake Forest assistant, was Prosser's top assistant coach for four years at Central Catholic. Prosser began his coaching career at Linsly Institute in Wheeling, spending time as the freshman coach ( ) and junior varsity coach ( ) before being promoted to head varsity coach ( ). Linsly compiled a record of 33-9 with Prosser as the varsity coach. Leaving Xavier and the city of Cincinnati was not easy. Wake Forest athletic director Ron Wellman searched nationwide for a new coach and he sought the advice of some of basketball's top minds. Prosser's name continued to surface over and over again. "When I started the process, I called the people who I thought knew the best college basketball coaches in the nation. They all said the same thing about Skip Prosser: 'If you can hire him, you better get him.' Not only is he a great basketball coach, but he's a great person. "Skip Prosser knows the rules and he follows them. He doesn't push the rules as far as he can and see what he can get away with. He knows the rules and he follows them strictly. Secondly, he graduates his players. At Xavier, he graduated 83 percent of his players, which was one of the highest rates in the nation. He is committed to the academic process. Thirdly, he is a great representative of our university. And fourth, he wins. His record shows that he knows how to win basketball games. "We are going to find that Skip Prosser is a great fit at Wake Forest University." Prosser expects his players to attend class and graduate. He expects his players to be solid representatives of the University. On the court, he expects his players to work extremely hard and compete for championships. "I won't make a lot of promises but I won't make excuses, either," Prosser said prior to his first season at Wake. "Our goal is to compete for championships every year. Our style will be to play very quickly. We expect to win every time we play and we expect to be the hardest-playing team on the court. "I hate to lose to anybody. I'm not a good loser. I abhor the losses a lot more than I enjoy the wins." Prosser expects his team to hold the same goals as the university. "Wake Forest has the vision to be the best university it can be and to be one of the best in the country. The same is true with our basketball team. We want to be the best team we can be and we want to compete with the best teams in the country." Prosser and Wake Forest appear to be a perfect fit. "I've been through a lot of springs with calls and inquiries and invitations to visit other campuses," Prosser said upon his hiring. "Something about Wake Forest rang true for me." On his visit to Wake Forest, Prosser liked the people, the area, the school's academic reputation and the intimate size. And then there was the prospect of coaching in the Demon Deacon Basketball 69

6 Skip Prosser Head Coach 2001 (April 24) Prosser named head coach at Wake Forest after a highlysuccessful tenure at Xavier Prosser led the Deacons to 21 wins in his first season and advanced to the NCAA Tournament 2nd round Behind ACC Player of the Year Josh Howard, Wake won the ACC title outright for the first time in 41 years With no scholarship seniors, the Deacs won 21 games and went to the Sweet 16 for the first time since Wake Forest won a school-record 27 games and earned the first No. 1 ranking in school history Despite losing 3 key seniors and All- American Chris Paul, Wake earned a 16th straight postseason bid. 7 Skip Prosser Head Coach Atlantic Coast Conference. "As the commercial says: The greatest risk is not taking one," Prosser said. "I know how difficult it (the ACC) is, but the challenge is part of what excites me. We came here to play and coach against these teams. It's a daunting challenge but if the players are willing to come to Wake to win, then I am certainly not going to shy away from that challenge." A 1972 graduate of the United States Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point (NY), with a degree in Nautical Science, Prosser played three years of basketball as a guard and one year of rugby as a collegian. He received his master's degree in secondary education from West Virginia University in Prosser attended Carnegie (Pa.) High School, where he was a standout football and basketball player. 16 Dr. Nathan Hatch President Hatch s Details Education Ph.D., Washington University, 1974 A.M., Washington University, 1972 A.B., Wheaton College, 1968, summa cum laude Professional Experience Provost, University of Notre Dame, The Andrew V. Tackes Professor of History, University of Notre Dame, 1999 Vice President for Graduate Studies and Research and Professor of History, University of Notre Dame, Acting Dean, College of Arts and Letters, University of Notre Dame, Associate Dean, College of Arts and Letters and Director, Institute for Scholarship in the Liberal Arts, University of Notre Dame, Assistant to Full Professor, Department of History, University of Notre Dame, Director of Graduate Studies, History, University of Notre Dame, Charles Warren Fellow, Harvard University, Postdoctoral Fellow, The Johns Hopkins University, Executive Council, American Society of Church History, Dr. Nathan O. Hatch is in his second year as president of Wake Forest University. A nationally-respected historian, Dr. Hatch had spent his entire academic career at the University of Notre Dame, where he was most recently provost, before becoming president of Wake Forest in July During his three decades at Notre Dame, he amassed a strong record of directing undergraduate, graduate and professional programs. After spending last year meeting faculty, students and alumni, he is focusing this year on a comprehensive strategic planning process to guide Wake Forest s future. The planning process, which is expected to be completed next fall, encompasses all schools and departments on the Reynolda Campus. This is an exciting time for Wake Forest, he says. Our new plan will build upon existing strengths and identify areas where we need to improve, through defining strategies, setting priorities, and developing tactics to reach our goals. I am more confident than ever that Wake Forest has the ability to continue to take a significant place within higher education. Throughout his academic career, Dr. Hatch has been drawn to challenges that involve people and building organizations. I am thoroughly an academic and have cherished administrative work not as different than teaching and scholarship but as an opportunity to build an organization in which academic life can flourish, he says. Although I had been at Notre Dame a long time, I had never been satisfied going around the same track too many times. I spent a considerable number of years in teaching and scholarship. Then I turned my attention to helping build a liberal arts college and then advancing graduate education and research. Finally, I oversaw the entire academic enterprise for nine years as provost. In each of these tasks, I had a set of defined challenges that I could throw myself into fulfilling. I wanted the organization to improve in noticeable ways and to think strategically and move from one point to another. Since coming to Wake Forest, he has created a Presidential Trust for Faculty Excellence to support faculty professorships and research. Building a community of faculty and students and sustaining the teacher-scholar ideal must remain the University s highest priorities, he says. Often described as affable, approachable and a lively conversationalist, Dr. Hatch has established a strong rapport with students. He made an early positive impression when he arrived at his student-sponsored Inaugural Ball on the back of a motorcycle driven by the Demon Deacon. He and his wife, Julie, a former public school teacher, recently oversaw the renovation of a garage at the President s House into a comfortable lounge/recreation area, where they plan to entertain student and faculty groups. The Hatches have three children: Gregg, a 1997 graduate of Notre Dame, who is a hospital administrator in South Bend, Indiana; David, a 2000 Notre Dame graduate, who works for a financial organization in Chicago; and Beth, a senior at Notre Dame majoring in American Studies and theology. Their first grandchild, Lucia Jean, was born in 2005 to Gregg and his wife, Kathy. Dr. Hatch, 60, grew up in Columbia, South Carolina, where his father was a Presbyterian minister. A graduate of Wheaton College in Illinois, he received his master s and doctoral degrees from Washington University in St. Louis and held postdoctoral fellowships at Harvard and Johns Hopkins universities. He joined the faculty at Notre Dame in 1975 and was named director of graduate programs in history in He served as associate dean of the College of Arts and Letters from 1983 until 1988 and then acting dean for one year. He was vice president for graduate studies and research from 1989 until being appointed provost in A Presbyterian, he was the first Protestant to ever serve as provost, the university s second highest-ranking position. He also held an appointment as the Andrew V. Tackes Professor of History. He is regularly cited as one of the most influential scholars in the study of the history of religion in America. He received national acclaim for his 1989 book, The Democratization of American Christianity, in which he examines how the rise of religious groups in the early 19th century helped shape American culture and foster democracy. The book was chosen in a survey of 2,000 historians and sociologists as one of the two most important books in the study of American religion. He is also the author or editor of seven other books on religion. He currently serves on the board of trustees of Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena, California, and on the National Council on the Humanities, the advisory board for the National Endowment for the Humanities. Dr. Hatch was named president of Wake Forest in January 2005 and took office on July 1, 2005, succeeding Thomas K. Hearn Jr., who retired after 22 years as president Demon Deacon Basketball

17 Dr. Richard Carmichael Faculty Athletic Representative Dr. Richard Carmichael was appointed Wake Forest's Faculty Athletic representative in July of He succeeded Dr. Ed Wilson, who retired following over 50 years of service to the school, including 15 seasons as the Faculty Athletic Representative. Dr. Carmichael brings long-time Wake Forest ties to the post as well. A 1964 graduate of the University with a degree in mathematics, he was previously Chair of the Department of Mathematics, a post he has held from 1988 until Born March 13, 1942 in High Point, N.C., Carmichael graduated from High Point High in 1960 and attended Wake Forest on a basketball scholarship. Playing under legendary coach Bones McKinney, Carmichael helped the Demon Deacons reach the Final Four in 1962, the only Wake Forest team to ever do so. Carmichael played three seasons, from , accumulating 584 career points and 340 rebounds. After graduating from Wake Forest, Carmichael went to graduate school at Duke University, where he received his master's degree in 1966 and his Ph.D. in mathematics in From there Carmichael took his first job as an assistant professor, teaching mathematics at Virginia Tech. In 1971, after three years in Blacksburg, Carmichael returned to his alma mater, and is now professor of mathematics. Carmichael has held visiting positions at UC-Davis, Iowa State and New Mexico State throughout his career and has earned appointed or elected professional positions in the Mathematical Association of America and the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics. He has served on numerous committees at Wake Forest. Carmichael has also published numerous mathematical works, including two books. An avid sports fan and devout follower of Demon Deacon athletics, Carmichael also enjoys helping the Wake Forest athletic media relations department in keeping statistics at home football and basketball games -- a service he has provided since Board of Trustees (July 1, 2006-June 30, 2007) Diana M. Wellman, who was named athletic director in October of 1992, is only the fifth man to assume the top position in the athletic department at Wake Forest during the modern era of intercollegiate sports, following Pat Preston, Jim Weaver, Bill Gibson and Dr. Gene Hooks, WFU s athletic director from 1964 through Since taking over control of WFU Athletics, Wellman has seen Deacon athletic teams rise to national prominence in several sports while perennially competing for Atlantic Coast Conference championships. The academic year was an example of Wake Forest competing at the highest level. All totaled, 10 Wake Forest teams were ranked in the top 25 and placed at their respective NCAA Championships. The field hockey team reached its sixth straight final four, men s golf tied for third place at the NCAA Championships, and men s soccer reached the round of 16. Individually, Chris Barclay was the 2005 ACC Football Player of the Year, Jennifer Averill was named ACC Coach of the Year and Allan Dykstra and Christine Suggs were ACC Rookies of the Year in baseball and field hockey, respectively. Off the playing fields, Wellman has spearheaded an effort for the overall development of the student-athlete. He asks his coaches to stress academics and Wellman has instituted programs to assist and develop student-athletes away from competition such as the annual Academic Excellence Banquet, a campus-wide affair which honors those student-athletes who have achieved in the classroom. Another obvious sign of the progress Wake Forest has made and is continuing to make under Wellman s leadership is the ambitious facility improvement program that the athletic department has undertaken. In recent years, Groves Stadium has seen a series of renovations, starting in 2005 with the new brick facing on the stadium s bleachers. In spring 2006, Wellman elected to install a state-ofthe-art FieldTurf surface. In 2004, Kentner Stadium, home of the Wake Forest field hockey and track programs, received a facelift as a new FieldTurf and surrounding track surface was installed. At the same time, a new playing surface was installed at the football practice facility. Three years ago, the Pruitt Football Center was completely renovated into new office and meeting space for the Deacon football team and staff. There have been significant facility improvements at Joel Coliseum, home of the Wake Forest basketball teams, including a new state-of-the art locker room facility and video board. And, there is the spectacular Bridger Field House at Groves Stadium, which provides support to every varsity team as well as the athletic department administration and entire university with its many services. The Kenneth D. Miller Center, which opened its doors in 2001, provides additional space for the Student-Athlete Services and CHAMPS programs, as well as a new state-of-the-art practice facility for the men s and women s basketball teams. The Miller Center also includes a spacious fitness center, which is available to students, faculty and staff. The dean of all ACC athletic directors, Wellman has taken an active role on the national level. Wellman serves on the NCAA Division I Management Council. Recently he served as chairman of the NCAA Baseball Committee and directed the implementation of a new and expanded national tournament format, creating significant interest in that event. Wellman also serves as president of the Division I-A Athletic Directors Association. He is also a member of the NCAA Diversity Leadership Strategic Planning Committee and the NCAA Baseball Academic Enhancement Committee. Wellman s successful career in college athletics includes both coaching and administration on various levels. Born in Celina, Ohio, he earned his undergraduate degree from Bowling Green State University, where he was a pitcher on the baseball team. After receiving a master s from Bowling Green, he joined the faculty and coaching staff at Elmhurst (IL) College in 1971, serving as head baseball coach, assistant basketball coach, assistant football coach and associate professor of health and physical education. In 1977, Wellman became Elmhurst s athletic director and guided the NCAA Division III program to new heights. A total renovation of the athletic facilities at Elmhurst was undertaken under his direction and every sport at the school improved its won-lost record during his tenure. Elmhurst recognized Wellman s contribution to its program in 1985 by naming him to its Hall of Fame. His accomplishments as a baseball coach were substantial as well. Elmhurst teams won more than 200 games ( ) under his leadership, and in five of his last seven years there, he was named conference Coach Of The Year. That success continued in 1981 when Wellman became head baseball coach at Northwestern. In five years, his squads compiled a record (65.0 winning percentage) and 15 of his players signed professional contracts. Additionally, his 1984 team set a school record with 44 wins. In his final three years at Northwestern ( ), 18 of his players achieved either Academic All-America or Academic All- Big Ten honors. Wellman began devoting his energies to athletic administration on a fulltime basis in 1986 when he was named athletic director at Mankato State (MN) University. In 1987, he became athletic director at Illinois State. Wellman and his wife Linda have three daughters Angie, who works for Career Sports and Entertainment in Atlanta and is married to Tim Lynde; Nicole, a pediatric resident, and her husband, Kevin Rice, live in Winston-Salem; and Melissa, a teacher, and her husband, Ben Norman, live in Greensboro. Both Melissa and Nicole earned their undergraduate and advanced degrees from Wake Forest.
