14 5th season at Texas 12th season as a head coach Full name Martha Richards Birthdate Oct. 6 Hometown Hudson, Wis. High School Hudson HS (Hudson, Wis.) College Stanford 93 Armed with a Big 12 Conference title and three NCAA Championships appearances, fifth-year University of Texas head women s golf coach Martha Richards has displayed her prowess for building nationallyacclaimed teams. Richards is poised for another standout season with a returning nucleus of four starters and the addition of an international newcomer that will immediately compete for playing time. The Longhorns experienced their awaited breakthrough under Richards at the 2011 Big 12 Championship when they claimed Texas first tournament victory in seven years with a three-stroke margin over rival Texas A&M. With calming assurance and first-class guidance from Richards throughout the 54-hole event, then-sophomore Madison Pressel became the second individual champion in school history with a Big 12 Championship record-setting score of 8-under-par 208, and she went on to be named the 2011 Big 12 Conference Women s Golf Player of the Year after finishing the season as the highest ranked individual in the league. Richards impact was seen immediately after she arrived in Austin prior to the season, as UT made its first appearance at the NCAA Championship since 2004, and then again in 2009 when Texas advanced to the National Championship as a No. 17 seed, becoming the lowest-ranked team to advance out of the NCAA West Regional Championship after tying for fourth place. Texas 16th-place showing in the 2010 national tournament marked its best finish of the Richards era. In 2010, Richards led a resurgence of Texas Swagger as her team recorded five top-five and 10 top-10 finishes, including back-to-back third place efforts at the Big 12 Championship and NCAA West Regional Championships. During the pivotal third year of Richards reign, the Longhorns etched their names into the annals for both team and individual records. Then-freshman Pressel fired a Texas single-round record of 6-under 65 on the first day of the 2009 Stanford Intercollegiate, while the squad carded a school-record 5-under 279 in the same round. Success on the course has also conveyed to excellence in the classroom under Richards watch. Through four seasons, 14 Longhorns have combined for 17 All-Big 12 Academic Team honors. Prior to arriving in Austin, Richards spent seven years as the head coach at Vanderbilt University. She led the Commodores to two NCAA Top-10 finishes and mentored seven All-Americans. Eight Vandy players garnered 18 All-SEC honors and 23 were All-SEC Academic Team selections. Coming into a program that had never advanced to the NCAA Championship, the Wisconsin native quickly turned the tables and took the Commodores to the postseason four times over seven seasons. Richards time in Nashville was highlighted by capturing the 2004 SEC title en route to a program-best fifth-place finish at the NCAA s. Richards was lauded with the Golfweek National Coach of the Year and SEC Coach of the Year honors following that season. Richards ability to bring in quality players and instantly help them improve is one of the main strengths of her program. Student-athletes competing for Richards are able to rely on her to continually develop their games. Prior to the season, five Texas golfers saw their scoring averages improve from the previous season, while two recorded their highest career tournament finish. Richards took over the helm of the UT program on June 12, 2007, replacing Susan Watkins who had served in the position for 14 seasons. But she was no stranger to Austin as she was the UT assistant coach from Feb During Richards first stint in Austin, she helped UT to a 10th-place finish at the NCAA Championship in The following year, Texas placed ninth at the NCAAs and second at the Big 12 Championship with All-Big 12 selections Laura Blessy, Kristin Dufour and Randi Meadows. T E X A S G O L F Head Coach Martha Richards T E X A S G O L F C O A C H E S & S T A F F We are so fortunate to welcome Martha Richards back to UT, Women s Athletics Director Chris Plonsky said upon Richards hiring. She is considered by many to be one of the finest women s coaches in the nation. Martha is a tremendous recruiter, and she built and developed the Vanderbilt golf program from infancy into an admired and powerful program both in the SEC and nationally. She had to learn the hard way at Vanderbilt by building the program from scratch and nothing could prepare her more professionally than doing just that. Richards was a rare two-sport athlete at her alma mater, Stanford University, excelling in golf and basketball. She earned All-America honors from the National Golf Coaches Association in 1993, All-Pac-10 Conference honors and was later named to the Pac-10 All-Decade Golf Team for the 1990s. Richards also came to The Farm as the 1988 National High School Basketball Player of the Year and helped the Cardinal to the NCAA title in She was inducted into the Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame in October RICHARDS CAREER CAPSULE Coaching Experience Head Coach, Texas (2007-Present) Head Coach, Vanderbilt ( ) Assistant Coach, Texas (Feb ) Head Coach, Boise State (1997-Feb. 1998) Volunteer Assistant, Stanford ( ) Coaching Highlights and Honors (at Texas) 3 Led the Longhorns to the Big 12 Conference Championship crown for the third time in school history, marking Richards first victory at Texas 3 In 2010, led Texas to five top-five and 10 top-10 finishes, including back-toback third place efforts at the Big 12 Championship and NCAA West Regional Championships while collecting UT s best finish at the NCAA Championship since 2004 with a tie for 16th place 3 Guided UT to a tie for fourth as a No. 17 seed at the 2009 NCAA West Regional Championship, becoming the highest seeded team to advance to the NCAA Championship 3 In 2008, led Texas to a tie for 17th place at its first NCAA Championship appearance since Directed the Horns to third place at the 2008 Big 12 Championship and seventh place at the NCAA Central Regional Championship Coaching Highlights and Honors (at Vanderbilt) 3 Led Vanderbilt to a sixth-place finish at the 2007 NCAA Championship and a fifth-place finish at the 2004 NCAA Championship 3 Coached seven All-Americans; eight student-athletes earned 18 All-SEC honors NCAA Central Regional Champions Southeastern Conference (SEC) Champions Golfweek National Coach of the Year and 2003 SEC Coach of the Year 3 Coached the USA women s team at the USA vs. Japan College Golf Championship in the summer of 2006 in Tochigi, Japan As Head Coach at Texas (2007-Present) Big 12 NCAA Year Finish Finish st rd t16th th 23rd rd t17th As Head Coach at Vanderbilt ( ) Big 12 NCAA Year Finish Finish th 6th th th st 5th th t14th th 18th th -- Playing Career (at Stanford University) 3 NGCA All-American (1993) 3 All-Pacific 10 Conference Team (1993) 3 Pacific 10 Conference All-Decade Team (1990s) 3 Played on LPGA Tour from As an Assistant Coach at Texas ( ) Big 12 NCAA Year Finish Finish th 3rd nd 9th nd 10th 13

She came to UT in the summer of 2007 to rejoin head coach Martha Richards, as Parsons was Vanderbilt s assistant coach for over three years ( ). Parsons and Richards have teamed up together to lead the Longhorns to the 2011 Big 12 Championship, three straight NCAA Championship appearances (2008, 2009, 2010) and two additional top-three finishes in league championships (2008, 2010). Through eight seasons, the tandem has advanced to the National Championship on five occasions (2004, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010). In addition to her coaching duties, Parsons assists in recruiting, scheduling, team travel, planning player-related activities and aiding in the dayto-day operations of the Women s Golf program. Tracy is a tremendous addition to our coaching staff, Richards said upon Parsons hire. Having worked with her for three-and-a-half years at Vanderbilt, she and I have a great rapport with one another, and I know she will make a big impact here at Texas. Tracy has a great eye for identifying talent, and she will be a big part of our success. Parsons played several key roles while serving as Richards assistant coach at Vanderbilt. Assuming her duties in March 2004, Parsons assisted as the recruiting coordinator and was instrumental in the planning and coordinating of Commodore Golf Day, the annual fundraiser for the Vanderbilt Men s and Women s Golf programs. Parsons also led organizational efforts for Vanderbilt golf events, including the team s annual Mason Rudolph Women s Championship and the 2006 Southeastern Conference Women s Golf Championship at the Vanderbilt Legends Club. Prior to her stint at Vanderbilt, Parsons served as a graduate assistant at her alma mater, Belmont University, for the season. Before launching her coaching career, Parsons was the program director for the Tennessee Golf Foundation, where she instituted programs for beginning junior golfers and oversaw the planning of junior tournaments. Parsons played collegiate golf at Western Kentucky from and at Belmont from Parsons earned a bachelor s degree in English in 2002 and a Master of Education in sport administration in The campaign marks Kate Golden s second season as volunteer assistant coach on the Women s Golf staff at The University of Texas. A former All-American, Golden joined the Texas staff after serving as the interim Women s Golf head coach at Florida State during the spring 2010 season. Under Golden s tutelage, the Seminoles finished in 10th place at the 2010 NCAA Championship to earn their best national finish since winning the 1981 AIAW Championship. Additionally, Golden guided FSU to No. 14 in the final national rankings by GolfStat and No. 22 in GolfWeek s seasonending standings after inheriting a team that was unranked in both polls. Prior to her stint at Florida State, Golden was a volunteer assistant coach for the Men s Golf team at Houston. An 18-year LPGA veteran ( ), Golden s professional career included a victory at the 2001 State Farm Classic, appearances in more than 30 major championships and nearly $1.5 million in career earnings. En route to the State Farm Classic title, Golden set a then-tournament record of 21-under-par during the 72-hole event. She totaled eight top-five finishes and 14 top-10s. A 1989 Texas graduate, Golden was a four-year member of the Women s Golf team under former head coach Pat Weis. She earned All- America second team honors in 1989 and was a three-time All-Southwest Conference First Team selection ( ). Golden was named to the Southwest Conference All-Decade team for the 1980s and won three collegiate events during her career. The 1987 Southwest Conference individual champion, Golden is the daughter of Texas Ex Joe Bob Golden, the 1954 SWC Men s Golf individual champion. 26 Betsy Rawls Longhorn Invitational 38th Annual tournament resumes in 2011 The Betsy Rawls Longhorn Invitational annually features many of the top women s golf teams in the country. Until 2010, players and coaches made their plans to come to Austin each spring to compete in one of the most prestigious regular-season tournaments in the country. In 2011, the 38th edition of the tournament will take place Oct Nov. 2, 2011, at The University of Texas Golf Club, and continue on as a fall event. It was in March of 1974 that Texas head coach Pat Weis had the foresight to establish what has not only become a tradition at UT and Austin, but a tradition that dominates collegiate golf for one spring weekend. This annual event originally known as the Texas Invitational has evolved into one of the strongest collegiate invitational tournaments of the year. In 1977, the Texas Invitational was renamed to honor Betsy Rawls, a Texas graduate and one of the most prolific golfers of her day. Rawls won more than 50 tour championships between 1951 and 1975, including four U.S. Opens, and was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 1977 and into the Texas Sports Hall of Fame. The tournament champions list reads like a who s who of women s golf. Nancy Lopez, Beth Daniel, Jody Rosenthal, Val Skinner, Michiko Hattori and Annika Sorenstam are just a few of the past winners who have made the Betsy Rawls tournament one of the marquee events in women s golf. In 2010, Texas placed fifth in the 54-hole event with a 43-over-par 907.
