8 HEAD COACH SUSIE GARDNER // MERCER WOMEN S BASKETBALL the SoCon Freshman of the Year after leading league freshmen in points per game and ranking fifth in rebounds per game. In her fourth season at Mercer, Gardner directed her team to a overall record, a 9-9 mark in A-Sun play and a trip to the A-Sun Championship Semifinals game. Three of the Bears nonconference wins came against current Southern Conference foes in - Western Carolina, Furman and Samford. In A-Sun play, Mercer won four of its final five games of the regular season and routed Jacksonville, 59-36, in the first round of the A-Sun Championship Tournament. Teanna Robinson highlighted Mercer s individual achievements for the season, having been named the A-Sun Defensive Player of the Year. Robinson tallied 312 rebounds and 114 blocks, while adding 177 points. The junior s 114 blocks set a new Mercer record, almost doubling the previous mark. Additionally, Kendra Grant was named to the A-Sun All-Conference Second Team and Kate Alemann was an Academic All-Conference Selection. The campaign represented year three for Gardner at Mercer and the results reflected all the work put in by Gardner and her staff to turn the Bears program around. Mercer posted a overall record for the program s first 20-win season since the campaign. The Orange and Black went 13-5 during A-Sun Conference play, setting a new program record for most league wins in a single-season. The Bears captivated the nation from early January to late February when they went on a 12-game winning streak, the longest for the program since the edition of the Bears won 14 consecutive games as a Division II member. Aided by the second-biggest turnaround in the country, based on total wins, Mercer capped off the season by earning the No. 1 seed in the 2013 Women s Basketball Invitational for its first appearance in a nationally sponsored postseason tournament since Season-by-Season AUSTIN PEAY: (.546) Season Record ARKANSAS: (.542) Season Record MERCER: (.516) Season Record OVERALL: (.534) Several Bears also achieved significant individual achievements under Gardner s direction during the season. Sophomore Precious Bridges and junior Kendra Grant were both named to the A-Sun All-Conference first team, the first time two Bears have made the first team since Andrea Congreaves and Jaana Sintonen were recognized in Bridges averaged 16.8 points per game to capture the A-Sun Conference scoring title, making the season the third-straight campaign a Mercer player has led the A-Sun in scoring. Her first team at Mercer was the third-youngest team in Division I basketball the 12-player roster featured a combined seven years of collegiate playing experience prior to the season. Mercer finished 2-27, a tally that doesn t represent the growth the team experienced under Gardner s direction. The team suffered numerous heartbreaking losses, dropping nine games by six points or less. Mercer Women s Basketball Notes - FAU // 8

9 The season did produce several bright spots, as freshman Briana Williams landed Atlantic Sun Freshman of the Year, Second Team All-Atlantic Sun team and A-Sun All-Freshman Team honors.
