Predictably, the 2017 season was a struggle as the Pilots finished with a record of For the 2018 season, RRAC coaches tabbed the Pilots to finish near the bottom of the pack. After a couple of starts and stops, however, the ladies hit their stride as they entered conference play, winning their last ten games in a row prior to meeting MMC. That streak included winning the RRAC Tournament and the first RRAC conference championship in program history. Three of her teammates joined Cunningham on the All-Tournament team, including midfielder Carolina Martins-Gomes (FR Governador Valdares, Brazil) who scored the first goal in the finals on a penalty kick; defender Mason Richardson (SR/Forney, TX) who played her usual stellar game on defense while also moving up to take seven shots in the two matches; and goalkeeper Karolyn Hasler (SO/ Chandler, AZ) who shut out both opponents in the tournament. Coach Holland went on to say it best. We have to hold our heads high. This team has gone above and beyond all season. 5 Pilots Open Season with Win The LSUS women, ranked #18 in the NAIA Preseason Women s Basketball Poll, got the season off on the right foot on November 9 in Waxahatchie, TX as they participated in the SAGU Classic, winning their opening round game by a count over Texas Wesleyan University. After dropping behind 18-7 at the end of the first quarter, the Pilots rallied to get back to within two at the half before taking a one-point lead at the end of period number three and hanging on to that margin until the final buzzer. Sabrina Banks (JR/New Orleans) led the Pilots with a game-high 15 points to go along with seven rebounds and a game-high five assists. She was joined in doublefigures by Shaniqua Tobias (SR/New Orleans) with 14 and Fu tra Banks (SO/Conway, AR) who came off the bench to contribute 11 points and five rebounds. Keiara Williams (JR/New Orleans) grabbed a gamehigh nine boards. The Pilots outshot the Rams from the floor (42.9% to 38.2%) and from behind the arc (40.9% to 25.0%) while holding a edge in rebounding. LSUS hit only two of nine free-throws while TWU made 11 of 19 attempts. LSUS Falls to OCU The 18th-ranked Pilots dropped their final game in the SAGU Classic on November 10 by a score of to the #10 Oklahoma City University Stars as LSUS evened its record at 1-1 while OCU improved to 3-0. A second consecutive slow start in which the Pilots were outscored 13-5 in the first quarter put them in a hole from which they were unable to recover as the Stars stretched the lead in each succeeding period. Sabrina Banks (JR/New Orleans) once again led the Pilots in points scored, this time with 12 as she hit four of five shots from behind the three-point line. As in the opening game, Fu tra Banks (SO/Conway, AR) provided a spark from the bench with 11 points while Leah Silva (JR/Mont Belvieu, TX) played all 40 minutes of the game, tossing in 10 points. The Pilots had shooting problems as they hit just 27.1% of their field goals, including nine of 30 three s, while converting nine of 15 free-throws. The Stars dominated the boards, Pilots Lose on Road to Philander Smith Once again the #18 Pilots took to the road, this time traveling to Little Rock on November 12 for a meeting with Philander Smith College, dropping a decision to the Panthers. The Pilots fell to 1-2, having played all road games thus far, while PSC improved to 4-1. This wasn t our best effort. We came out sluggish in the second half (after leading at intermission), commented Coach Matt Cross. We have to get better on the defensive boards; we gave them way too many second chances. The Pilots had three players score in double figures as Sabrina Banks (JR/New Orleans) put up 13 points with Keiara Williams (JR/ New Orleans) and Fu tra Banks (SO/ Conway, AR) close behind with 12 points each. Sabrina recorded a double-double, adding 15 rebounds to her line. Neither team shot particularly well, both hitting just above 36% from the field. Turnovers proved to be a factor as the Pilots gave the ball away 20 times to 12 for the Panthers. PSC held a margin on the boards. Pilots Drop Squeaker at MUW The Pilots traveled to Columbus, MS on November 11 for a game versus the Mississippi College for Women (which is, despite its name, a co-educational institution), dropping a decision to the Owls. 6 improved to 4-1. Fu tra Banks (SO/Conway, AR) led the Pilots in scoring with 14 points. She was closely followed by three 13-point scorers in Keiara Williams (JR/New Orleans), Lauren Pollins (JR/ Hooks, TX) and Shaniqua Tobias (SR/New Orleans). Williams and Pollins each recorded a double-double with 12 and 13 rebounds respectively while Tobias grabbed four boards and handed out six assists. The Pilots shot 39% from the field and just 40% (six of 10) from the free-throw line. The Owls out-rebounded their guests and forced LSUS into 17 turnovers while committing twelve. Fu tra Goes Off, Pilots Win by One If the Pilots game versus Tougaloo College in Mississippi on November 20 was a movie, most people would pass it off as contrived. With the Pilots trailing after the third quarter, LSUS chipped away at the lead but with just 40 seconds remaining the game appeared to be lost to just about everyone but the Pilots Fu tra Banks (SO/Conway, AR). Within that final 40 ticks, she hit a three, made one of two free throws, connected on a two-pointer, made another one-of-two from the foul line before launching a game-winning three with five seconds on the clock for a win, sending the LSUS bench into a wild celebration. LSUS improved to 2-2 with the win while the Bulldogs dropped to 1-1 on the season. Sabrina Banks (JR/New Orleans) and Lauren Pollins (JR/Hooks, TX) led the Pilots with 17 points each, along with eight and nine rebounds respectively. Fu tra finished with 13 points 10 in that fateful 40 seconds--and five rebounds while Shaniqua Tobias (SR/New Orleans) tossed in 11 points and a team-leading eight assists. The Pilots outscored TC in the fourth quarter and won the battle of the boards, Pilots Lose RRAC Opener to Wildcats The LSUS women traveled to Marshall, TX on December 7 to face Wiley College in the opening contest of the RRAC schedule for both squads. Unfortunately, the Pilots came out on the short end of a score, falling to 2-4 overall and 0-1 in the conference as the Wildcats improved to 3-5 and 1-0. Neither team shot particularly well from the field as the Pilots hit 34.4% of their shots while WC didn t do much better at 36.4%. LSUS went to the free throw stripe 26 times but hit just 14 with the home team going 13 for 18. LSUS turned the ball over 17 times to 11 for the Wildcats. Sabrina Banks (JR/New Orleans) led a balanced Pilots attack with 17 points on eight of sixteen from the field. She was joined in double-figures by Fu tra Banks (SO/ Conway, AR) who scored 13 and pulled down seven rebounds; and Shaniqua Tobias (SR/New Orleans) and Keiara Williams (JR/New Orleans) who each tossed in 11 points. Tobias added a game-high eight assists. LSUS Women Swamp Jarvis The Pilots evened their RRAC record at 1-1 with a huge win over Jarvis Christian College, 99-66, on December 8 in Marshall, TX. Improving to 3-4 overall while JCC fell to 0-11 and0-2, LSUS took a commanding halftime lead and never looked back. Two Pilots scored two double-doubles with Lauren Pollins (JR/Hooks, TX) leading the way with 30 points and a dozen rebounds. Sabrina Banks (JR/ New Orleans) added 22 points and 10 boards. Others scoring in double digits were Fu tra Banks (SO/ Conway, AR) with 26, Keiara Williams (JR/New Orleans) tossing in 11 and Shaniqua Tobias (SR/New Orleans) with 10 points and a game-leading nine assists. 7 Pilots Drop Pair in TWU Classic TWU 67, LSUS 65 The #7 LSUS Pilots jumped into a tough spot in the first weekend of the basketball season as they participated in The Texas Wesleyan Champions Classic, hosted by #11 TWU in Ft. Worth. In addition to the Pilots and their hosts, the two other Classic teams were #1 The Master s University (CA) and #2 with each participating team playing two games. LSUS took on the TWU Rams in the nightcap on November 1, jumping out to a 3430 half-time lead versus their former RRAC foes. Texas Wesleyan proved to be a little too much as they outscored the Pilots after intermission to grab the win, making TWU 1-0 on the season while the Pilots dropped to 1-1. Jeff Garrett (SR/Gadsden, AL) led the Pilots in points with 17 and was the leading rebounder in the game with twelve. Garrett was joined in double-digit scoring by Amaad Wainwright (SR/Kansas City, MO) with 14, Josh Stamps (SR/Chicago) who dropped 11 and Rakim Rock Lubin (SR/ Miami) who tossed in ten. TWU controlled the boards while the Pilots outshot them from the field, 41.4% to 39.7%. The Rams held the edge in free throws, sinking 12 of 19 while the Pilots were making 8 of fourteen. The Master s 86, LSUS 76 The next day, November 2, it was out of the frying pan and into the fire for the Pilots as they faced off with the NAIA s topranked team, The Master s University Mustangs from Santa Clarita, a suburb of Los Angeles. The Mustangs jumped out to an early advantage, leading by as much as 24 points in the first half before the Pilots closed the gap to at the half. (SR/Kansas City, MO) dropping 12 and Rock Lubin (SR/Miami) contributing 54 points and 6 rebounds. Nate Levine (FR/ San Antonio) came off the bench to add nine points. The Pilots forced 25 turnovers while committing 14 but once again lost the battle of the boards, With ten new players this season (the record is now 1-2), it will take some time for the team to mesh but there s a wealth of talent in this bunch. LSUS Coach Kyle Blankenship commented, Obviously, we are disappointed in the outcomes this weekend but there are many positives we can take away from playing against two top NAIA programs. (We) showed some heart, toughness and character... and I am very proud of that. LSUS Downs UT-Dallas in Champions of Character Game The Pilots played their annual Champions of Character Game at The Dock at 11:00 a.m. on November 7, this year hosting the University of Texas-Dallas, downing the Comets to run their season record to 2-2. Each year, the Pilots invite approximately 800 students from area elementary schools to attend a game which stresses the NAIA s Five Core Values of Respect, Responsibility, Servant Leadership, Sportsmanship and Integrity with LSUS players and coaches talking to the kids about each of the values. The Pilots jumped to a halftime lead and coasted to the win, led by Nate Levine (FR/San Antonio) who came off the bench to score 17 points, including hitting five of 11 shots from beyond the three-point line. Joining him in double-figures were Rock Lubin (SR/Miami) who tossed in 14, Kelvin Henry, Jr. (SO/Lake Charles) adding 11 and Jeff Garrett (SR/Gadsden, AL) with a double -double of 10 points and 15 rebounds. 10 December 1, 2018 Merry Christmas Pilot Fans, As another year comes to a close it leaves me wondering first, where did the time go, but more importantly how lucky I am to be sitting in this chair, at this school, working with such great people. Our coaches bring it every single day and our student-athletes make me proud to put on purple and gold every day. I want to also take a minute to recognize the incredible success that our two soccer programs had this year. Men won the first ever Regular Season Championship and the women won the first ever Tournament Championship! Women also qualified for the National Tournament and placed Kati-Jayde Cunningham on the All-American team as the first ever to be honored from the women s program. The men also placed two on the first ever All-American team, Gui Martins and Danny Meza. Congratulations to all three! Our home Conference basketball games start this week and the teams have found their groove, the momentum is really starting to build. We all know it isn t how you start, but how you finish, and it looks to be the beginning of an impressive finish. Let me just throw a stat line at you from the other night.jeff Garrett had 21 points, 22 rebounds, 6 blocks, and 5 steals. Think about that for a minute.wow! This is what you can look forward to if you come enjoy a game. This is also the time of the year to think about giving back, and our programs are out doing just that. Baseball has been ringing bells for the Salvation Army and our men s and women s basketball teams will be visited the children s hospital this week to spread some cheer. Please consider giving back to the student-athlete experience and helping our own. I m not sure if you have seen them, but we have some awesome River Monster socks for purchase. For just $10 they make great stocking stuffers! All proceeds go back to our student-athletes. Sorry, had to plug those! From a facilities standpoint we also have a large project in the works, I can t say what it is quite yet, but it will be a largest project to date. Stay tuned I can t wait to see you all out at games, and as always..it s a great day to be a Pilot! AnchorUp, Lucas Morgan Director of Athletics
