ROBINSON HIGHLIGHTS Robinson Believes in winning championships; not just on the basketball court, but in life, in family and within the community. Is a rejuvenator. He breathes life back into programs. Believes in education. Within his three seasons as the Alcorn State University Braves' Head Men s Basketball Coach, he has graduated all of his seniors. His program has maintained a 1,000 APR score for two straight years and on the way to the third. Robinson Is a recruiter. He has a national and international recruiting base. He has coached and recruited All-Conference players everywhere he s coached. He recruited the first Scottish Division I basketball player. Brings culture to his program, using his TAGS philosophy. Time - time must be dedicated in order to become successful Accountability - one must hold self and others accountable to become successful Goals - one must set goals in order to reach for them Service - one must be willing to serve and give back 4
COACHING PHILOSOPHY Coach Robinson believes in creating a style and system that reflects the strengths and weaknesses his current basketball team possesses. However, there are more noticeable characteristics of a Montez M. Robinson coached team, whose style of play is coined Organized Chaos. Team characteristics are shaped through the recruiting process and practice. The team is extremely physical and dominant, especially on the defensive end of the floor. Robinson s student-athletes are very aggressive rebounders on both ends of the floor. Being one of the best rebounding teams enables the team to get out in transition and score easy baskets when the opportunity presents itself. Offense Robinson s team has the ability to push the ball up the court and fill lanes to get behind the defense. In the half court set, the team looks to run motions, pick and roll action, and the ability to consistently score off of quick hitters and offensive sets. Players also have the knowledge regarding when penetration is taken away; the team can then counter with kick out three pointers. The team will effectively score the ball inside and have a scoring presence in the lane by, both, post players and guards. The team will have the ability to play inside out and cut without the basketball. Offensive rebounds are imperative when looking to get second chance opportunities at scoring. Defense Pressure defense for 94 feet Have the ability to trap full and half court Apply pressure on ball handlers Front the post depending on personnel Play sound help side defense Have the ability to play various zone defenses, like 2-3 zone, 3-2 zone, match-up zones, zones and any variation that will be based on personnel. The team should have the ability to switch defenses to confuse the offense and continue to work hard defensively to create easy offense. Rebounding is key as the team looks to limit the opposing team to one shot. In today s fast-paced game, transition defense is critical. Communication with teammates and awareness of the opponent are more critical than running back to the paint. 5
PROGRAM GOALS Nurture the whole person for each individual in program Maintain 100% graduation rate Ensure student athletes graduate on time Exceed APR standards and maintain team GPA of 3.0 Develop and maintain a good work ethic Develop and maintain good sportsmanship Win: conference regular season championship and conference tournament Advance to the NCAA Tournament and win These goals are achievable through the use of Robinson s TAGS philosophy. T TIME A ACCOUNTABILITY G GOALS S - SERVICE 6
ACADEMIC PHILOSOPHY Coach Robinson s academic philosophy came from his mother. She taught him the ball would go flat one day and he needed to have a plan for when that happened. TAGS (Time, Accountability, Goals and Service) is a philosophy he shares with his players to help them manage their time, work together and provide the academic foundation for this athletic program. T TIME Time is essential to building success and accomplishing goals. Time management is key in balancing all facets of life, such as academics, basketball, service and extracurricular activities. A ACCOUNTABILITY Accountability is being responsible for one s actions and is related to integrity. Accountability is critical to the student-athlete s success on the basketball court and in the classroom. Without individual accountability, there can be no success. G GOALS Each student-athlete sets personal goals for themselves. These expectations stay with players for life. Attainable team goals are set to establish expectations. S SERVICE Service is about giving back to the community. The realization of the blessing to play college basketball is discovered via service to others who would gladly exchange circumstances to have opportunities such as those of our student-athletes. Service is a lifestyle and not a temporary inconvenience. 7
ACADEMIC GOALS Staff Academic Goals Staff members will properly evaluate prospects during the recruitment process. The analysis of transcripts, as well as contacting teachers and guidance counselors is needed to determine if the young man will be able to have academic success on campus. Cause student-athletes to become aware of the many different academic support systems on campus. Evaluate current player eligibility and academic success. Become familiar with each player s major and minor. Know each player s departmental academic advisor and always have each student-athlete s class schedule nearby. Improve the men s basketball program graduation rate. Classroom Conduct Student-Athlete Academic Goals Be on time. Sit in the front row, or as close to the front as possible, so the professor knows who is attending class. Be courteous to professors. Communicate with the professors so players are not just another student. Turn in assignments on time. Be alert and take good notes; do not sleep in class. Respect each professor and only work on his or her assignments during their class session. Take all necessary materials to each class. 8
ACADEMIC EXPECTATIONS Discipline and Accountability Accountability Statements 1. This is a team game and all members must be committed to the H.I.D.E. concept. Hard Work Integrity Dedication Excitement 2. Players are expected to be the best they can be in all areas of life, including church, school, community and on the basketball court. 3. Players should think before acting. Life is 10% what happens and 90% how one reacts to what happens. 4. Players must be loyal to their faith, family, school, teammates and coaches. 5. Players must attend all classes with the intent to learn, participate and be active. 6. Players must be punctual for all appointments. 7. Players positive attitudes will have a profound influence on the quality of work produced. 8. Players must be winners on and off the court. 9. Hope is not a strategy; this team will prepare in all aspects. 10. Coaches are not looking for extraordinary men to do ordinary deeds, but ordinary men to do extraordinary deeds. Mannerisms on and off the Court Never do anything that will be embarrassing to family, school, teammates, coaches or self. Players should get to know their faculty and administrators. Maintain a positive attitude and build relationships with professors. Whether win or lose, players must maintain positive attitudes in the presence of alumni, family and friends of the institution. Players should be respectful, maintain their composure, and body language when entering the gym for practices, games, in game situations, pre-game and post-game activities. Be humble winners and gracious losers. 9
STAFF DEVELOPMENT Role of Assistant Coaches Coach Robinson believes there are three essential assistant coach responsibilities. Assistant coaches should: 1) Be loyal to the head coach and program 2) Get players and provide for them once they arrive on campus 3) Promote the program. Loyalty must be real, as it is required within this business. Loyalty is always speaking the same language as the head coach. Loyalty is keeping things inhouse that need to be kept. Loyalty turns into trust and when there is trust between head coaches and assistants, programs can flourish and grow.. Student-athletes are the lifelines of a successful program. It is the assistant coach s job to know the kind of players the head coach wants and to recruit and deliver those athletes. It is the assistant s job to sell the head coach, the program and the school to recruits to the point to where all the head coach has to do is close the deal. Assistant coaches should be knowledgeable of athletes, recruiting services, AAU coaches and head coaches. Recruiting should always be organized and progressive. A staff has to stay four or five steps ahead to produce good recruiting classes every year. Once the student-athletes arrive on campus, it then becomes the responsibility of the assistant coaches to keep the student-athletes eligible. Assistant coaches should be knowledgeable of NCAA eligibility rules and the university academic rules. Assistant coaches should help student-athletes mature and develop into leaders and responsible adults. The assistant coach must also be the buffer between players and the head coach. The assistant coach should handle any rising issues in order to relieve the head coach, but always make the head coach aware of issues pertaining to players. As much as the head coach is the face of the program, the assistant is a representative of the program. The assistant coach is a public relations, marketing and promotions liaison for the program. Building and nurturing relationships is key for a good program, just as it is for establishing a great career. 10
STAFF DEVELOPMENT Assistant Coach Responsibilities ASSISTANT COACH #1: Recruiting Coordinator Staff Travel Arrangements Admissions Liaison Compliance Liaison Scheduling Scouting Coordinator Game Preparation Player Development Career Development Community Outreach Bench Involvement: Strategic Suggestions, Fouls and Timeouts ASSISTANT COACH #2: Recruiting Academic Liaison Team Travel Housing Liaison Equipment Liaison Assist Coach Robinson with team budget Pregame Meals for Home Contests Scouting Game Preparation Player Development Bench Involvement: Defensive and Offensive Success ASSISTANT COACH #3: Maintain Office Files: Recruits, current players, and alumni Recruiting: Create mail outs Assist other coaches with recruiting Film exchange Video edits Bench Involvement: Intangible statistics Coaches will meet with their assigned student athletes at least once per week to discuss academics, life and basketball. Professional Development Coaches should : Attend other team practices Get new ideas and network with other coaches Attend clinics and read books 11
PROGRAM ORGANIZATION BUDGET MAINTENANCE Recruiting and team travel are the main budget priorities for this program. Ensuring all expenses, such as gear purchases, are properly planned is essential to maintaining a balanced program budget. COMPLIANCE Complying with university and NCAA athletic rules and policies is essential to a winning program. RECRUITMENT Based on the type of player the team needs, the number of available scholarships and player academic eligibility, the entire staff and team becomes part of the recruiting process. MEDIA AND PROMOTION Media opportunities are welcome, as a strong program exists via relationships with media and community. Robinson produces a monthly newsletter so all stakeholders are informed of program progress. Transportation Lodging Meals Practice times Itineraries TEAM TRAVEL SCHEDULING Schedule exhibition, pre-season and conference games Planning and securing contracts SUMMER CAMP Promotion materials: postcards, brochures; advertising Logistics: facilities, dates, times SCOUTING Video exchange program Data and Analysis: Scouting Reports, Synergy, video editing, statistical review 12
