The Lady Hornets have lost six straight at Memorial Hall, with their last win coming on Dec. 11 against St. Francis (N.Y.) (7-66). The Lady Pirates have won seven of their last eight games. THE SERIES Hampton leads the all-time series over DSU, The Lady Pirates have won the past six contests between the two teams and 1 of the last 15. The last Lady Hornet victory came on Feb. 9, 2008 in a 58-6 win at Memorial Hall. This is the first of two regular games between the two teams. They will match up again on February 20 in Hampton. THE COACHES DSU head coach Ed Davis holds a 5-2 all-time record against Hampton. Davis is in his 12 th at the helm of Del State women s basketball and 20 th year coaching women s basketball. He holds a 6-20 (.601) overall record and is (.99) at DSU. In MEAC play, Davis is (.596). Hampton head coach David Six is in his third as a head coach at the school. He has spent his entire career with the Lady Spartans and is 61-2 overall. Hawkins shot 7-for-9 from the floor and 7-of-8 from the free throw line for the Lady Hornets while Bristow was 9-for-16 from the floor and -for-7 from three-point land. Bristow, who was 1st in the nation with a.85 free throw percentage, went 0-for- from the charity stripe to drop her average to.817. The double figure points marked the fourth time this that Hawkins has scored 20-plus points and the third time for Bristow. Del State also saw double figure scoring from Deanna Harmon, who posted 10 points on -of-8 shooting from the floor. HAMPTON: The Lady Pirates rebounded in a big way last Monday, upending Morgan State, 7-60, at the HU Convocation Center in front of a national ESPNU audience. Senior guard Jericka Jenkins led the Lady Pirates with 25 points on 8-for-16 shooting and eight assists, while senior forward Melanie Warner added a -high 20 points on 7-for-12 shooting. Senior guard Choicetta McMillian pulled down a team- and career-high 1 rebounds, while junior forward Keiara Avant came off the bench to add seven points and 10 rebounds. SCOUTING THE LADY PIRATES Hampton is currently 16- on the year and 8-1 in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (good for second place). Their lone MEAC loss came on Jan. 28 against Coppin State in a defeat in overtime. The Lady Pirates are currently ranked 10 th in the CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major poll. HU leads the MEAC in nine categories (scoring defense, scoring margin, free throw percentage, field goal percentage defense, -point field goal percentage, -point field goal percentage defense, rebounding margin, turnover margin, assist/ turnover ratio, -pt field goal made). Senior Jericka Jenkins, a two-time MEAC Player of the Week, leads the team in scoring with an average of 1.9 points per game. Fellow senior Choicetta McMillian puts up an average of 1.5 points per game. Junior Keiara Avant and senior Melanie Warner collect an average of 6.7 and 6.6 rebounds per contest, respectively. BURGESS RETURNS Current Hampton assistant coach Barbara Burgess is in her third with the Lady Pirates. Burgess, a 1990 Delaware State alumnus, was a four-year Black College All-American for the Lady Hornets and a 2000 Delaware State Athletic Hall of Fame honoree. She was named to the MEAC All-Rookie team and ended her career with the Lady Hornets as the school s No. 2 all-time leading scorer with 1,807 points. As a sophomore, she led the team in scoring (17.9 points a game) and rebounding (7. rebounds a contest) and was named to the All-MEAC First Team. Burgess also led Delaware State in scoring as a junior with 17.1 points per game and earned All-MEAC First Team honors. She was Delaware State s Female Athlete of the Year in and led the Lady Hornets to the 1989 MEAC Tournament Championship Game. Burgess graduated from Delaware State in 1990 with a bachelor s degree in health and physical education. DAVIS LISTED AMONGST CIAA S BEST Head women s basketball coach Ed Davis and head men s coach Greg Jackson are listed among the 100 Greatest Athletes & Coaches in the history of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (CIAA). D OLIVEIRA AND PITT NAMED TO PRESIDENT S LIST The 2011 fall semester grades have been released by the Delaware State University Athletic Academic Services staff and nearly 50 percent of the Delaware State University student-athlete population has been named to the Hornet Academic Honor Roll for the 2011 Fall Semester. Women s basketball juniors Kianna D Oliveira and Crystal Pitt were two of 15 student-athletes to earn perfect.0 grade point averages for the semester. The Lady Hornets also had four players, in addition to D Oliveria and Pitt, named to the Hornet Academic Honor Roll for receiving a.00 GPA for the semester in junior Uchechi Ahaiwe, redshirt sophomore Ashley Davis and freshmen Alexis Thornton and Morgan Woodruff. HARMON MISSES FIRST GAME For the first time since her middle school career, sophomore Deanna Harmon did not dress for competition. Harmon was deemed medically inelgible with concussion-like symptoms to play on Jan. against Fordham. SCORING WOES The Lady Hornets have scored under 0 points twice this, both coming against ranked teams ( at no. 5/6 Maryland and 5 at no. 22/25 Texas). Additionally, both teams didn t allow a Lady Hornet to score in double figures. Last, DSU was held under 0 points four times. WHITE ELIGIBLE TO SEE ACTION FOR DSU Sophomore Tarshaye White, who previously played for Patrick Henry Community College, has been ruled eligible for competition with the completion and submission of first semester grades. In her first game, White saw two minutes of action and recorded one rebound and one assist for the Lady Hornets against Towson on Dec. 22. DOWN, BUT NOT OUT A 28- run over St. Francis gave the Lady Hornets their largest comeback victory in the recent years. With 1:25 remaining in the second half, St. Francis led by 20 points before DSU went on their run to win. D Oliveira was a member of the Lady Hornets her freshman and sophomore years. In her two s, she averaged 5.6 points, 5.2 rebounds and 1.1 blocks per contest in 58 games played. She also led DSU in blocked shots with 27 her freshman and as a sophomore. In her first game back with the Lady Hornets, D Oliveira recorded nine points, three rebounds and one blocked shot in 18 minutes of play. RANKED OPPONENTS DSU faced two ranked opponents this. On Dec. 8, the Lady Hornets fell to no. 5/6 Maryland, On Dec. 28, no. 22/25 Texas defeated DSU, HAWKINS SPARKS DSU IN OPENER In her first game wearing a Delaware State University uniform, redshirt freshman Tierra Hawkins recorded a double double of 21 points and 10 rebounds as the Lady Hornets cruised by Wilmington University, 80-2, in their -opener. Hawkins finished the day on 9-of-20 shooting and -for-6 from the charity stripe in addition to three blocks, two assists and two steals in 28 minutes of play. All 10 players on DSU s active roster saw playing time and scored at least one point. NEW MARKS SET IN FIRST GAME The Lady Hornets rewrote numerous historical statistical categories in their first game as they collected over 50 rebounds (51) for the first time since 2008 when they tallied 56 against Cheyney. Additionally, they recorded 22 steals, their most since Jan. 8, 2011 when they had 17 against North Carolina Central. The last time Del State won by more than 0 points was in 2009 when they posted a score of 8-28 over Lincoln (Pa.) and the last time they allowed less than 0 points was on Jan. 9, 2010 in a 57-9 win over Winston-Salem State. YOUNG TEAM The Lady Hornets bear little resemblance to the team that posted a 9-20 overall record and a 10 th place finish in the MEAC (5-11) last. Del State returns just four players who saw action last year. Head coach Ed Davis faces the challenge of replacing his top two scorers, leading rebounders and best three-point shooter from a ago. SEASON/HOME OPENERS Since the , the Lady Hornets are (8- during Ed Davis era) in home openers, including this year s 80-2 victory over Wilmington. When winning the home opener, they have gone on to post winning record that 12 of the 19 times. Del State hasn t fared as well in openers as they are 11-2 overall to start a since Conversely, six of those 11 victories have come with Davis in charge. The Lady Hornets gone on to have had a winning in seven of those 11 years. REDSHIRT TRANSFER Ashley Davis, a guard from Odenton, Md., will sit out this due to NCAA Division I transfer rules. The 5-10 player comes to Delaware State from Drexel University, where she played in 11 games for the Dragons as a redshirt sophomore. Davis averaged 1. points in 6.7 minutes played. She redshirted her freshman at DU. Since accepting the post prior to the , he has led DSU to the most successful run in the history of the program. Prior to the , the Washington, D.C., native had an overall record of (.518) at DSU, including a (.616) mark in MEAC regular contests. The Davis years at Delaware State are highlighted by a MEAC Tournament championship and NCAA Tournament berth (2007), a MEAC regular co-championship (200-0), five MEAC championship game appearances and the only 20-win s (four) in team history. Davis further enhanced his credentials after a hard fought loss to No. 2 seed Vanderbilt in the 2007 NCAA Tournament. That, the Lady Hornets became the first Division I women s team to hold opponents to less than 50 points per game in a, allowing 9.6 per contest. Davis also served as the university s interim Director of Athletics during the academic year. The previous (200-0), Davis led the Lady Hornets to new heights, recording a school-record 21 wins (21-9) and capturing a share of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference regular title for the first time in team history. His team was defeated by regular co-champ Hampton in the MEAC Tournament championship game. During the , his first at DSU, Davis guided a Delaware State that was picked to finish 10 th in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference to within minutes of a conference championship. In the four years prior to Davis arrival, the Lady Hornets were 6-85, and failed to advance beyond the quarterfinals of the conference tourney. Prior to taking over the Delaware State job, Davis was head coach at Bowie State University (Md.). In eight s at Bowie, he posted an overall record of and turned the Bulldogs into one of the top Division II programs in the country. His tenure was highlighted by three Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) championships, three NCAA Tournament appearances, and numerous coach of the year awards.
