MEAC Rookie of the Year Tierra Hawkins led Del State with 19 points and 13 rebounds, her seventh double double of the. Tasia Bristow followed up with 18 points, four assists and three steals. KENTUCKY: The No. 6/7 University of Kentucky women s basketball team opened their with a dominating exhibition victory over Bellarmine University Monday evening in front 2,202 fans in Memorial Coliseum. Six Wildcats tallied double-figure points, while 11 of UK s 12 available players scored at least two points. Junior Samarie Walker led the Wildcats in scoring with 19 points on a perfect 9-of-9 from the field. The West Carrollton, Ohio, native also chipped in six rebounds and swiped five steals on the evening. SCOUTING THE WILDCATS After being selected to repeat as Southeastern Conference champions by the media, the No. 6/7 University of Kentucky women s basketball team also was picked by the league s coaches as the pre favorite to win the title. Senior guard A dia Mathies, the 2012 SEC Player of the Year, was tabbed the pre player of the year, while junior forward Samarie Walker and sophomore guard Bria Goss were recognized on the All-SEC second team. The Wildcats enter the as the SEC s team to beat after recording a school-record 13 league wins and advancing to the Elite Eight a year ago. HAWKINS SELECTED TO MEAC PRESEASON ALL-FIRST TEAM As voted on by the conference s head women s basketball coaches and sports information directors, DSU redshirt sophomore Tierra Hawkins was selected to the MEAC Pre All-First Team. Hawkins was the MEAC Rookie of the Year in addition to earning All-Rookie team honors after leading the Hornets and finishing sixth in the MEAC with 14.6 points per game. Additionally, she finished first on the team and ninth in the league with 7.1 rebounds per contest. LADY HORNETS PREDICTED TO FINISH 11 TH The Delaware State University women s basketball team is predicted to finish 11 th in the MEAC as they received a total of 160 points in the pre poll, as voted on by the conference s head women s basketball coaches and sports information directors. Howard University was predicted to win the regular with 637 total points and collected 15 of the 26 first place votes. Last year, the Lady Bison finished with a 24-9 overall record and were 14-2 in the MEAC. Howard welcomes back all of its starters from last s squad. The three-time defending MEAC champion Hampton Lady Pirates were picked to finish second with 597 points and seven (7) first-place votes. The Lady Pirates, who will open up their on November 9 against Southern Mississippi, concluded the campaign with a 15-1 conference record and 26-5 mark overall. Williams introduced Tamika Louis as the team s new head coach. Louis arrives at Delaware State with 14 years of coaching and recruiting experience on the NCAA Division I, Junior College and high school levels. Most recently, she served as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator during the at George Washington University in Washington, D.C. Joining Louis on staff are assistants Yvette Harris, Yolanda Cole and Demetrius Porter in addition to Devona Knight, who will serve as the team s Director of Basketball Operations. RANKED OPPONENTS Based on the 2013 NCAA women s basketball pre rankings, DSU will face just one ranked opponent this in the University of Kentucky. The Wildcats are currently ranked 6/7 to open the year. The Lady Hornets also have the possibilty of taking on no. 24/23 Miami in the Hurricane s Holiday Tournament, held Dec DSU opens the tournament with Wisconsin and could face Miami in the second game. D'OLIVEIRA: DELAWARE STATE'S BLOCKS LEADER? Senior Kianna D Oliveria, who has played in 77 career games for the Lady Hornets, currently sits in fourth place all-time on the DSU blocks list. The forward needs 33 blocks to take over first place from Thea Littlepage ( ), who leads the pack with 109 blocked shots. WASHINGTON JOINS DSU FROM ARIZONA WESTERN CC Predicting to start Saturday s game is Hornet newcomer Jade Washington, who joins Delaware State after spending one at Arizona Western Community College. While there, the Las Vegas, Nev. native averaged 9.5 points, 4.8 assists, 3.6 steals and 2.8 rebounds per game for the Matadors. During her high school tenure, Washington was a three-time team MVP that led the Patriots to two Sunrise Region and Southeast Division Championships. 5 ACADEMIC HONOREES Three current members of the Lady Hornets were honored this spring as the conference announced the 2012 Commissioner s All-Academic Team. For the second consecutive year, Delaware State University led all schools with an impressive 121 student-athletes on the list. The team recognized 814 student-athletes from the conference s 13 member institutions who achieved academic success during the school year. MEAC sophomore, junior and senior student-athletes with a 3.0 or better cumulative grade point average as well as transfer student-athletes who have been in residence at the institution for at least one year are eligible for All-Academic accolades. The women s basketball team was represented by Kianna D Oliveira, Crystal Pitt and Morgan Woodruff. CANDY YOUNG: NEW DSU ATHLETIS DIRECTOR Prior to the school year began, DSU President Harry L. Williams appointed Candy E. Young as Delaware State University s new Athletics Director. Young moved into DSU s top athletics post after serving the last seven months as interim senior associate athletics director. Additionally, she served as senior woman administrator for athletics since September Young first came to DSU in 2006 as the head women s track and cross country coach, a post she served in until She served as the MEAC acting athletics director for the University from March to May of Prior to her arrival at Delaware State, Young served as an assistant men and women s track coach at California State University, the University of Pittsburgh, Ohio State University, and Seton Hall University from 1992 to During her stint with Seton Hall, the women s track team was the Big East Champions in She also served as the head coach of the USA World University team in REDSHIRT TRANSFER Ashley Davis, a guard from Odenton, Md., sat out the campaign due to NCAA Division I transfer rules. The 5-10 player comes to Delaware State from Drexel University, where she played in 11 games for the Dragons as a redshirt sophomore. Davis averaged 1.4 points in 6.7 minutes played. She redshirted her freshman at DU. At Arundel High School, Davis was a McDonald s All-American nominee and holds the school s career record for three-pointers made. ST. FRANCES ACADEMY TEAMMATES The Lady Hornets feature three players who come from St. Francis Academy in Baltimore, Md. Juniors Tasia Bristow and Deanna Harmon are joined by sophomore Chelsea Dukes on the Del State squad. During their tenure, SFA posted a 69-3 combined record, including a 21-0 when Bristow and Harmon were juniors and Dukes was a sophomore. The three also helped lead SFA to two IAAM championships in addition to Diamond State Classic and Bishop Walsh tournament championships. Williams introduced Tamika L. Louis, a former championship junior college head coach and Division I assistant coach, as the new head coach. Dr. Williams stated that he is very happy that Coach Louis has decided to become a member of the One Hornet Nation family. I expect that she will bring a high-level energy and excitement to our women s basketball program, Williams remarked. Louis arrives at Delaware State with 14 years of coaching and recruiting experience on the NCAA Division I, Junior College and high school levels. Most recently, she served as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator during the at George Washington University in Washington, D.C. Louis commented that, as the Lady Hornets head coach, I will be a servant-leader and hope that my energy, dedication and work ethic will be infectious to the young ladies on the team. We will establish a winning culture here with an expectation to excel in the classroom and on the court, resulting in MEAC championships, Louis stated. Just as important, we will develop future leaders who, upon graduation, will make an immediate impact in our global society and positively represent DSU. The decision to hire Coach Louis culminated a two-month search process that began in late March upon the retirement of former head coach Ed Davis. Serving on the search committee for the head coaching post were committee chair Dr. Gwendolyn Scott-Jones (chair of the Department of Psychology), Dr. Jan Blade (faculty athletics representative), Candy Young (interim senior associate athletics director and senior woman administrator), Dr. Joe Amoako (professor of English and member of the Athletics Council), Dr. Josette McCollough (DSU Alum and former women s basketball student-athlete), Dr. Sonja McCoy (associate director of mentoring and advising) and current women s basketball senior Kianna D Oliveira. Eric Hart, then Interim DSU Director of Athletics, praised the search committee for their hard work and expressed great hopes for the Lady Hornet basketball program under Louis. We are starting a new chapter in women s basketball and I am confident that Coach Louis will be able to build upon a strong basketball legacy here at Delaware State University, remarked Hart. Coach Louis has built a reputation on the Division I landscape as being a fierce recruiter and has built top tier programs at Illinois and St. John s in addition to being on her way to building a strong class at George Washington University. From , Louis was an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator for St. John s University, where she was in charge of organizing all recruiting initiatives, game scouting, overseeing player academic progress and of-court mentoring. Additionally, she was responsible for the development of the Red Storm guards, including Second Team All-Big East and Freshman All-American Shennieka Smith. Prior to her time at SJU, Louis served as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator for the University of Illinois from where she was instrumental in signing the No. 2 and No. 3 ranked players in the 2009 class in the country, according to ESPN Hoop Girl and Blue Star rankings, in All-Americans Destiny Williams and Karisma Penn. From , she was the head women s basketball coach at Mott Community College in Flint, Mich., where she led her squad to a overall record during her tenure. The squad boasted a 16-0 conference record and was 27-7 overall en route to a NJCAA Region XII championship and bid to the NJCAA Tournament. For her efforts during this stellar, Louis was named the Michigan Community College Athletic Association and Region XII Coach of the Year. Before joining the collegiate coaching ranks, Louis had stints as an assistant and associate basketball coach at Central High School in Fresno, Calif., Rhodes High School in Cleveland, Ohio and Cuyahoga Community College in Cleveland, Ohio. After playing her freshman year ( ) at West Virginia University, Louis transferred to Fresno State, where she was the starting point guard and captain from She earned her Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts Degrees in communications from Fresno State University. 6
