Nate Kennell and Donte Thomas are second and third on the team in scoring with 9.2 and 8.6 points, respectively. Freshman Elijah Childs leads with 6.9 rebounds, while Thomas is second at 6.0. BU is averaging 68.0 points, shooting 43.7 percent from the floor and 37.8 percent from 3-point range. The strength of the team so far is on defense where BU features the nation s fifth-ranked defense, allowing only 58.5 points per game, 36.3 percent of field goals and 26.1 percent from 3-point range. Of the 11 active scholarship players for the Braves this season, nine have scored in double figures in at least one game. While Darrell Brown and Nate Kennell lead BU in scoring, the next seven highest Braves in points per game are all shooting at least 45 percent with five players above 50 percent making a number of capable players to lead the offense. THE REBOUNDING EDGE Rebounding has been one of the largest keys for the Braves since the arrival of Coach Wardle. Since the beginning of the season, BU has won 76.9 percent of its games (20-6) when it outrebounds its opponent. However, on the reverse end, has won just 15.4 percent of its games when failing to win the battle on the glass (6-33). The good news for the Braves is they have held the rebounding edge in 9-of-10 games this season, posting an 8-1 record with more rebounds and a 0-1 record in its lone game with less. CRASHING THE GLASS IN The Braves are enjoying a huge jump in rebounding numbers this year, leading to its 8-2 record. has increased its national ranking from last year by at least 150 spots in offensive rebounds (from 287th to 31st), rebounding margin (241st to 50th) and rebounds per game (207th to 51st). Childs leads the Braves with 6.9 rebounds per game, including 2.8 on the offensive glass. In fact, Childs ranks fifth nationally by collecting 17.9 percent of BU s misses when he s on the court. Overall, Childs is third in the MVC in offensive rebounds per game (90th in NCAA) and fifth in total rebounds (209th in NCAA). EARLY RISER Elijah Childs dominance on the boards show just how much of an impact he is having as a rookie. Childs is averaging 7.9 points and 6.9 rebounds in just 18 minutes this year ranking fourth among MVC rookies in points and second in rebounds. Childs has a chance to join elite company as only three BU freshmen have ever led the team in rebounds in school history. Additionally, Childs became the first BU freshman to record a double-double in one of his first three games since Patrick O Bryant in Then against Missouri S&T, Childs made all seven of his shots in a 14-point, eight-rebound game. He is the first Brave to shoot 100 percent and make at least seven shots in a game since Andrew Warren on Nov. 18, MVC CAREER REBOUNDING LEADER The senior member of the Braves, Donte Thomas ranks as the active leader in career rebounds in the MVC. SHARING THE VICTORY During the last two years, assists have been key in a victory with 12 as the magic number. is 15-2 during the last two seasons when it records 12 or more assists, including a perfect 6-0 mark this year. However, is just 6-20 over the two seasons when it records 11 or fewer assists with a 2-2 record during the campaign. Overall, is averaging 13.9 assists this season, an increase of 2.5 from the 11.4 averaged last year. 20-PLUS As of late, the Braves haven t stopped at 12 assists and have made 20 their goal. has already reached the mark in three games this year. Dating back to least year, BU has recorded at least 20 assists in five of its last 15 games after not doing so once in the previous 125 contests. CHARITY NEEDED Another key for the Braves this season has been an ability to get to the charity stripe. In its seven wins, is averaging 22.1 free throw attempts with 14.1 makes per win. One year after completely overhauling the roster and featuring the youngest team in the nation, ranked among the top 25 improved teams in the country by increasing its win total by eight victories, while posting its best finish in the MVC in seven years. Prior to joining the Braves, Wardle compiled a (.594) overall record in his five seasons at Green Bay, which culminated with backto-back 24-win seasons and three straight postseason appearances and included the Horizon League regular-season title. Wardle was the youngest head coach in NCAA Division I basketball when he took over the Green Bay program in 2010 at age 30 and he is third among all NCAA Division I head coaches younger than 40 with 121 career victories. Prior to taking over as head coach at Green Bay, Wardle spent the previous five seasons ( ) as a Phoenix assistant and two years ( ) as Director of Ops at Marquette. As a player, Wardle scored 1,690 career points at Marquette, still good for seventh on the school s career scoring list. Led the Golden Eagles in scoring in each of his final three seasons ( ). Sophomore Darrell Brown has continued to shine as the Braves go-to offensive threat. Brown leads BU with 12.6 points and 3.3 assists per game during the season. Brown has scored in double figures in 9-of-10 games this year and the lone game he didn t, the sophomore posted a career-best seven assists. A LEADER IN KENNELL Sophomore Nate Kennell has taken a step forward in his second season with the Braves this season. Kennell has led the team in scoring three times in 10 games this year. As a rookie, Kennell did not once finish with the team-high in points. Overall, Kennell is second on BU with 9.2 points per game this year after averaging 5.7 last season. DEPTH ON DISPLAY There hasn t been much of a drop from s starters to the reserves this season. BU s bench have averaged 27.9 of the team s 68.0 points this season, while shooting nearly the same from the floor and 3-pointers. In fact, the reserves have equaled or outscored the starters in 4-of-10 games this year with the team s leader in points also coming off the bench in four contests. Teams are averaging 18.9 seconds per possession against the Braves this year, the fourth-longest in the country and well above the national average of 17.0 seconds per possessions. For comparisons, is averaging 17.3 seconds on its offensive possessions this year. FINDING NEW WAYS TO WIN The Braves no longer need to rely on superior shooting to win games. Last season, was 13-3 with a higher shooting percentage than its opponent but 0-17 when being outshot. During the campaign, however, BU is already 2-1 when its opponents outshoots. 50/20 s strength on the glass was showcased most in back-to-back games against Missouri S&T and Georgia Southern. In a win against Eastern Illinois, Lautier-Ogunleye registered his first collegiate double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Lautier-Ogunleye also collected a career-best 11 boards in the win versus IUPUI the highest total by a guard since Jake Eastman had 13 against Green Bay in the 2013 CIT. Overall, the junior guard has led the team in boards three times this year and is averaging a career-best 5.0 overall. ADDING OFFENSE FOR DLO After a strong start to the year on the glass and defense, Dwayne Lautier-Ogunleye has added offense to his game of late. In his last four games, Lautier-Ogunleye has posted 9.3 points per game shooting 61.1 percent from the field and 60.0 percent from 3-point range. The surge comes after a slow start to the year when Lautier-Ogunleye averaged 2.8 points on 29.4 percent shooting and 16.7 percent from 3-point range. BROWN PRESEASON ALL-MVC After one of the best freshman seasons in history, sophomore Darrell Brown was named to the MVC Preseason Second Team. BU is one of just four schools in the country to return at least 90 percent of its points, rebounds and assists this year, joining preseason No. 8 Wichita State, No. 11 Southern Cal and Colgate. Overall, is just one of 16 schools nationally returning at least 70 percent of its points, rebounds and assists from last year. BUILDING WITH FRESHMAN TALENT In the two years under coach Brian Wardle, has rebuilt its roster with talented freshmen. In fact, has had four players collect MVC All-Freshman Team honors over the past two years double the next highest total (Missouri State and Wichita State both had two selections). Last year, Koch Bar and Darrell Brown were both named to the All-Freshman Team, while Dwayne Lautier-Ogunleye and Luuk van Bree earned the honor following the campaign. BROWN LOOKS FOR ROOKIE REPEAT It didn t take long for Darrell Brown to have an impact with the program and is in elite company with the BU best. Brown led the Braves with 12.6 points per game, the highest scoring true freshman in the MVC since Doug McDermott in Overall, Brown s 402 total points are the thirdmost by a freshman in history BU Freshman Scorers Year Points 1. Brown, Bar, Jayden Hodgson and Nate Kennell combined to average 31.6 points in 18 MVC games last season, more than 13 points ahead of secondplace Wichita State (18.3). The four rookies also accounted for 48.7 percent of the team s offense in conference games, scoring on average 31.6 of the team s 64.8 points. Thomas finished the season strong and was one of BU s top performers after a slow start. In MVC games, Thomas posted 9.4 points (second on team) and 7.8 rebounds (third in the league). Overall, he averaged 10.8 points in the final 16 games last year with a 59.8 shooting percentage he averaged 4.6 points in first 17 games. Thomas also led the team in rebounding in 19 of the final 24 games of the season. ALL IN THE FAMILY The Braves have a number of family connections to NBA and college greats. Sophomore Darrell Brown is the godson of former NBA All-Star, Penny Hardaway. Freshman Ryan Stipanovich is the nephew of Steve Stipanovich a former All-American at Missouri and the No. 2 pick in the 1983 NBA Draft. Ryan s sister, Sydney, played for Penn from 2013 to 2017 and was the 2016 Ivy League Player of the Year, while his brother, Matt, was a member of the water polo team Marymount from 2010 to Sophomore Nate Kennell is the cousin of Aaron Zobrist, who played for the Braves from 1993 to 1997 and is in the school s Hall of Fame.
