Miami, in their seventh season under head coach Jim Larrañaga, suffered its only loss of the season on Dec. 23, a defeat to New Mexico State in the second round of the Diamond Head Invitational. The Hurricanes rank No. 2 in the ACC in scoring defense and field goal percentage defense. The Yellow Jackets entertain Yale Saturday for its final non-conference game of the season, then host Notre Dame next Wednesday to complete the season series with the Fighting Irish. Tech was projected to finish ninth in the ACC in the preseason voting by conference media. The Jackets finished 11th last season at Tech has yet to play a game with its entire roster healthy and available. The Yellow Jackets played their first eight games without its leading scorer and ACC All-Freshman player from last season, Josh Okogie. They played without senior guard Tadric Jackson for the first three games; without sophomore point guard Justin Moore for three games; and have been without freshman guard Curtis Haywood II for the last four games. Tech players have missed 19 games to various injuries this season. Six Atlantic Coast Conference teams are currently ranked in the Associated Press poll - Duke (2), Virginia (8), North Carolina (13), Miami (15), Florida State (24) and Clemson (25). Notre Dame was a top 25 team until right before the holiday break, but still is receiving votes along with Syracuse and NC State. The Jackets have already faced UCLA (No. 21 in preseason) and Northwestern (No. 20 in preseason), as well as Tennessee, which is now No. 23. Head coach Josh Pastner needs six victories to reach 200 for his head coaching career. In nine-plus seasons, Pastner has a record of Series vs. Miami Miami has won the last two games of the series, including a victory last season in Coral Gables, the teams only meeting. After winning the first two meetings with Miami after the Hurricanes became members of the ACC, Georgia Tech has dropped 10 of the last 14. Miami has a 13-8 lead in the all-time series which dates back to 1953, and is 13-6 against the Yellow Jackets since joining the ACC. Miami has won the last five meetings in Atlanta and is 3-0 at McCamish Pavilion. Miami also won the only regularseason meeting between the two teams in , as well as their ACC Tournament meeting, both games at Philips Arena. Miami was the opponent for Tech in its final game at Alexander Memorial Coliseum, a game the Yellow Jackets won to close out the regular season. Tech won four of six games against the Hurricanes in the building. Tech had won its last two games against Miami in Coral Gables prior to last year s visit, including a victory over sixth-ranked Miami on March 6, It was Tech s first win at the Watsco Center since Feb. 26, Thirteen of the 21 meetings have been decided by 10 points or less. The last meeting between the two schools prior to Miami s joining the ACC occurred in December of 1997 as part of the Orange Bowl Classic doubleheader at Miami Arena, the Hurricanes home court until the team moved into the oncampus Convocation Center last year. The Yellow Jackets, led that year by senior forward Matt Harpring, won that game, Tech played Miami twice under former head coach Whack Hyder, losing the first-ever meeting in the series by 22 points in 1953, then taking a six-point homecourt victory in That was the only pre-acc visit by the Hurricanes to Alexander Memorial Coliseum, and the Tech win has been the highest scoring game in the short series. Leading Tech offensively was Josh Okogie, who recorded 16 points and seven rebounds on the night. Tadric Jackson provided key energy off the bench with 15 points and four rebounds while Ben Lammers tabbed his fifth double-double of the year with 11 points and 12 boards. Jose Alvarado rounded out Tech s double-digit scorers with 11 on the night as well. Bonzie Colson scored 22 points and matched his career high with 17 rebounds for the Irish (11-3), who scored the first eight points of the second half to take a lead. The Yellow Jackets (6-7) had only one more lead, 32-31, as Notre Dame steadily pulled away. A 10-1 run gave Notre Dame its largest lead at with six minutes to go. Also scoring in double figures for the Irish was Martinas Geben with 12 points, Rex Pflueger 11, and Matt Farrell and T.J. Gibbs 10 apiece. Pflueger also dealt a game-high six assists, while Geben flushed home three slams over the final nine minutes of the game. Each team finished just 23 of 60 from the field (ND with seven three-pointers and Tech with six), but the Irish were 15 of 18 from the free-throw compared to the Yellow Jackets 7-of- 18 effort. Jackets Enduring Tight Games With the exception of Georgia Tech s games against Georgia, Florida A&M and Coppin State, the Yellow Jackets games have been close and not decided until the final minute or two. Factoring into this is the low number of possessions in most of the Jackets games according to KenPom.com, which ranks 313th in the nation. UCLA - Tech rallied from a nine-point deficit to within one possession in the final minute (62-60 with 21 seconds left). Bethune-Cookman - Tech never trailed in the second half but also never led by more than six inside the final five minutes, needing a pair of free throws by Abdoulaye Gueye with seven seconds left to seal a win. Texas-Rio Grande Valley - Tech led by as many as 19 late but still needed to pull its walk-ons in the final minute to preserve a 10-point victory North Texas - Easily Tech s best defensive game of the season, the Jackets led by eight under the 4-minute mark before winning by 14. Northwestern - The Jackets led by 10 with 13:49 to go but didn t score another field goal until Tadric Jackson s layup at the final horn lifted Tech to a win. Grambling State - A furious Tech rally turned a 16-point second-half deficit with 10 minutes left into a threepoint lead with 43 seconds left, but a pair of turnovers, two missed free throws and an own-goal on a Grambling State miss with sevens seconds left helped the Tigers win, Tennessee - Tech shaved a nine-point second-half deficit down to one inside four minutes to go, but the Volunteers held off the Jackets from there by going 16-for-18 from the free throw line. Wofford - Tech led by 10 with 5:53 left, but scored just twice the rest of the way while the Terriers crept back to a tie and won on Fletcher Magee s three-point field goal with 1.7 seconds left. Wright State - Tech rallied from an 11-point deficit under the 10-minute mark but rallied to briefly take a lead with 2:38 remaining. But the Raiders immediately took back the lead with a pair of threes. Jose Alvarado had a threepoint look with the Jackets down with 13 seconds left but missed. Team Notes Head coach Josh Pastner used his sixth different starting lineup of the season at Notre Dame, inserting Abdoulaye Last Year s Meeting GAME 26 Miami 70, Georgia Tech 61 Feb. 15, 2017 Coral Gables, Fla. Davon Reed scored 21 points, DJ Vasiljevic added 13 and Miami survived having a depleted roster to beat Georgia Tech Dewan Huell scored 11 of his 13 points after halftime for the Hurricanes (17-8, 7-6 ACC). Miami played without guard Ja Quan Newton, who is starting a three-game suspension for a violation of team rules, and lost center Ebuka Izundu 67 seconds into the second half with a left leg injury. Josh Okogie scored 18 points for Georgia Tech (15-11, 6-7), which fell to 2-8 on the road. Ben Lammers added 15 for the Yellow Jackets. Miami went 22 for 27 from the foul line - while Georgia Tech went only 2 for 3 from the stripe. Georgia Tech was called for 18 fouls, compared with only six for Miami. Okogie s 3-pointer with 14:13 left put the Yellow Jackets up 46-45, but Reed and Huell combined to score the next seven for the Hurricanes and Miami wouldn t trail again. Vasiljevic made a 3 to push the lead out to 58-50, and Reed capped another flurry with a jumper that put Miami up with 5 minutes remaining. Bruce Brown logged 37 minutes for Miami despite being diagnosed with tonsillitis earlier in the week, and Huell went 21 minutes despite a foot injury that has needed several rounds of treatment in the last four days. Georgia Tech came into the game holding opponents to 39 percent from the field this season. Miami shot 55 percent on Wednesday, 50 percent from 3-point range. Curtis Haywood II, who had started seven straight games, sat out for the fifth consecutive game with a shin injury. Sylvester Ogbonda did not suit up due to an ankle injury, and Justin Moore missed the last two games due to a death in the family. Injuries or other absences have forced Tech players to miss 27 games cumulatively this season, and the Jackets have yet to play a game with all 11 scholarship players healthy. Alvarado and Lammers have started every game this season. Lammers has started Tech s last 50 consecutive games. Jose Alvarado and Josh Okogie each played 40 minutes for the Yellow Jackets, while Ben Lammers played 40-, meaning he exited the game for less than 30 seconds. The last, and only time, three Tech players played all 40 minutes in a game was Jan. 30, 1991 in a loss to Duke, when Kenny Anderson, Jon Barry and Malcolm Mackey all played 40 minutes. It was the first time Okogie has played all 40 minutes in his career, while Alvarado had a 40-minute game earlier this season. Lammers has played 40 minutes six times previously. Tech has averaged 70.8 points and converted 43.8 percent of their field goal attempts in the five games since Josh Okogie s return. Tech continues to make life tough for opponents inside the three-point arc. The Jackets came into the Notre Dame game ranked No. 17 nationally according to Kenpom.com in lowest two-point field goal percentage yield (now percent after Notre Dame converted 16-of-40). Tech has connected on just 15 threes in 57 attempts in its last four games against Georgia, Wright State, Coppin State and Notre Dame (3.8 per game and 26.4 percent). The Yellow Jackets had made 37.4 percent of its three-point field goals and averaged 6.0 per game (43-for-115) over the seven games prior to that. Tech has committed 12.8 turnovers per game this season, down from 14.9 at the same point (13 games) last season. Tech committed just seven turnovers against Notre Dame and has just 13 in its last two games. Notre Dame outscored Tech in the paint, outrebounded the Yellow Jackets and scored 16 secondchance points on 13 offensive rebounds. Just a game earlier, Tech outscored Coppin State in the paint and enjoyed a season-high plus-17 advantage in rebounding (41-24). The Jackets also took 11 offensive rebounds and scored a seasonhigh 16 second-chance points. One game after hitting 20-of-21 from the free throw line against Coppin State, Tech connected on just 7-of-18 opportunities at Notre Dame, its poorest performance from the stripe since going 3-for-13 against Virginia on Feb. 8, The Jackets dropped to 70.3 percent for the season. Tech ranks 14th nationally in percentage of points scored at the free throw line (23.6 pct.) and 29th in highest ratio of free throw attempts to field goal attmepts (41.7 pct.). The Jackets are scoring 15.7 points per game at the stripe this season, compared to 13.6 a year ago. Pastner meter 1 (assists to made field goals): Tech assisted on just 10 of 23 field goals made and 36 of 100 in its last three games (36 percent), falling short its nightly goal of 60 percent for the third straight game. It was his 32nd double-digit game off the bench as a Yellow Jacket, 23 of those since the beginning of last season. The senior guard has reached double figures 19 times in his last 21 games and 33 times since the beginning of last season. Jackson went 7-of-13 from the floor (0-for-3 on 3s) against Notre Dame, and is hitting 63.3 percent of his shots (57- of-90) from inside the three-point arc this season, 51.8 percent overall. Jackson grabbed four rebounds and had three assists with just one turnover in 25 minutes. Josh Okogie has averaged 18.0 points per game in his five games back on the court, reaching double digits in every one, including a team-high 16 with seven rebounds at Notre Dame. The 6-4 sophomore has hit 9-of-21 shots from threepoint range and 29-of-37 (78.4 percent) from the free throw line. Okogie has scored in double figures 37 times in 42 career games. He has scored 20 or more 11 times. One game after missing nearly the entire second half with a head injury, freshman point guard returned to the floor and played all 40 minutes in his ACC debut, scoring 11 points (4-8 FG, two 3s) for his eighth double-digit scoring game this season. Brandon Alston, starting his second straight game and seventh this season, scored four points with three rebounds but 4

Jackson surpassed 900 career points with his performance against Coppin State and has 927 currently. At his current career-best average of 15.8 points per game, it will take him five more games to become the 44th Georgia Tech player to reach 1,000. Lammers has 847 career points, and would need 12 games at his current 12.8 per game rate to reach 1,000. Return of the Ironman Head coach Josh Pastner is not shy about his philosophy of playing no more than seven or eight players in games, reminiscent of the way Bobby Cremins coached the Yellow Jackets over his 19 seasons. So far this season, Ben Lammers ranks No. 6 in the ACC in average minutes played (35.5), but had been No. 1 until playing just 22 minutes against Florida A&M. Freshman point guard Jose Alvarado is 13th (33.2), and Josh Okogie is averaging more than both of them at 35.8, but has only played five games. All three players logged 40 minutes at Notre Dame. Playing time for some of Georgia Tech s players last season, primarily center Lammers and forward Quinton Stephens, drastically escalated to fill the void created by the loss of five seniors from the previous year s team. Lammers averaged 35.5 minutes per game (36.6 in ACC games) to rank fourth in the ACC, while Stephens averaged 33.3 minutes (34.2 in ACC games), not quite making the ACC top 10. Between them, they logged nine 40-minute games, and point guard Josh Heath added one. NOTE: Between the Cremins era and the arrival of Pastner, only one Georgia Tech player played 40 minutes in a game, regulation or overtime, and that was Marcus Georges- Hunt on Feb. 20, 2016, in a win over Notre Dame at home. In the final 15 seasons of Cremins tenure ( through ), a total of 196 players logged a 40-minute game. StraitJackets Due to its ability to play different defenses and keep opponents off balance, Georgia Tech continues to hold most of its opponents below, significantly below in several cases, their scoring averages. The Yellow Jackets have held every opponent except Georgia and Wright State under its season scoring average this season, all of them significantly lower except for Tennessee. At 65.1 points allowed per game, Tech ranks fifth in the ACC and No. 34 nationally in scoring defense. Most significant among the opponents Tech has held well below their averages are UCLA (82.6 ppg, 63 vs. Tech), Northwestern (74.0 ppg, 51 vs. Tech), Bethune- Cookman (78.9 ppg, 62 vs. Tech), North Texas (78.4 ppg, 49 vs. Tech), Wofford (77.0 ppg, 63 vs. Tech) and Notre Dame (81.3 ppg, 68 vs. Tech). Tech ranks No. 75 in the nation in defensive efficiency (98.6 points allowed per 100 possessions) according to KenPom.com, and No. 12 in two-point field goal percentage allowed (42.3). The Jackets also rank high in block percentage (29) and steal percentage (38). Last season, Tech ranked No. 6 nationally in adjusted defensive efficiency, according to KenPom.com (91.0 points allowed per 100 possessions). Tech had not ranked that high in KenPom s adjusted defensive efficiency since 2005 (fifth). The Yellow Jackets 2004 NCAA runner-up team ranked No. 4. The Jackets also ranked 14th nationally in lowest two-point field goal percentage yield (43.9 pct.). Tech accomplished this while ranking 23rd in fewest personal fouls per game. Tech ranked fourth in the conference in scoring defense (66.8 ppg) and No. 1 in FG percentage defense (39.8 pct.). Assisted Living Georgia Tech coach Josh Pastner preached and prodded his Yellow Jackets on ball and player movement from the first time he got his team on the practice court. His primary measuring stick on how well the Jackets perform is their ratio of assists to made field goals. Last season, the Yellow Jackets ranked 13th nationally, according to KenPom.com, in highest percentage of assists to made field goals at 62.6 percent, the team s highest rate since the season. Tech s number was 63.2 percent in ACC games. That had held throughout the early portion of the season, with the Jackets assisting on better than 62 percent of their made field goals through nine games, but that has a big hit in Tech s last four games (36 assists on 100 made field goals). The national average for that statistic is 52.9 percent Third Time Not the Charm Georgia Tech s Dec. 6 loss at Wofford ended a distinction for head coach Josh Pastner that had been a personal point of pride, and a measure of consistent success. Until then, Pastner had never lost three straight games in eight seasons as a head coach, never in seven years at Memphis and not during his first season at Georgia Tech. Only one other power conference head coach and program could make that claim over the last eight seasons, and that was John Calipari and Kentucky. Seven ACC teams lost three in a row last season. Tom Izzo and Michigan State lost three straight last season. Roy Williams and North Carolina lost three straight in Kansas and Villanova lost three in a row in That Tech has been able to avoid a three-game skid last season was remarkable; the Yellow Jackets lost two in a row on six occasions, and lost two straight bridging the end of the season and this year s season opener against UCLA. The most improbable victories that stopped those streaks from continuing were a win Dec. 7 at VCU on Dec. 7, the Rams only home loss this season, Jan. 25 at home vs. No. 6-ranked Florida State, a No. 3 seed in the NCAA Tournament, and its first-round NIT win over Indiana, a No. 3 seed. Win Followed losses to D7 at VCU Penn State and Tennessee on the road J12 vs. Clemson at Duke and Louisville at home J25 vs. Florida State at Virginia Tech and Virginia F7 vs. Tusculum at Clemson and Wake Forest F28 vs. Pittsburgh NC State at home and at Notre Dame M14 vs. Indiana at Syracuse and Pitt (ACC Tournament) N19 vs. Bethune-Cookman vs. TCU in NIT and UCLA in China Jackets Sign 3 to Letters-of-Intent Georgia Tech signed a trio of 4-star high school prospects 6-3 guard Michael Devoe of Orlando, Fla., 6-7 forward Khalid Moore of New York, N.Y., and 6-9 forward Kristian Sjolund of Katy, Texas - to national letters-of-intent during the November signing period. All three prospects are highly regarded for their talent level, versatility and upside as head coach Josh Pastner continued to build the Yellow Jackets program. We re really excited to bring these three young men into our program, said Pastner of his second Tech recruiting class. This class really helps the continuation of our rebuild job at Georgia Tech. They are very good basketball players who fit the Georgia Tech mission. They will continue the process of what GAME COACHES NOTES 5

Tech s Modern Miracle Georgia Tech played in its first National Invitation Tournament championship game in 46 years in 2017, capping an inaugural season under head coach Josh Pastner that defied all pre-season projections and expectations. Tech won 21 games and an 8-10 ACC record for the second straight year after being picked to finish 14th in the conference. Along the way, the Yellow Jackets knocked off No. 9 North Carolina, the eventual national champion, No. 6 Florida State and No. 14 Notre Dame, as well as Boston College, Clemson, Pittsburgh and Syracuse in conference play. Tech defeated Indiana and Belmont at home in the first two rounds of the NIT, completing a school-record 17-win home schedule, then went on the road to defeat Ole Miss to reach its first NIT final four since Once there, the Yellow Jackets won their semifinal game over CSU Bakersfield before losing in the championship game to TCU. The Yellow Jackets return their top three scorers sophomore guard Josh Okogie, senior center Ben Lammers and senior guard Tadric Jackson from that team. Lammers, who ranked No. 3 in the nation in blocked shots and No. 4 in the ACC in rebounding, earned second-team All-ACC honors and was named the ACC Defensive Player of the Year. Okogie, who accumulated the third-most points of any Tech freshman in program history, was named to the ACC All-Freshman team. Year 2 of Rebuild for Tech Basketball Georgia Tech is in its 103rd season of basketball in under second-year head coach Josh Pastner, the 14th head coach in program history. Pastner, 40, compiled a record over seven seasons as the head coach at Memphis, where the Tigers earned bids to the NCAA Tournament four times. He was tied for the 10th most wins for a head coach in his first seven seasons in Division I basketball history, and was the second winningest active coach under the age of 40 in NCAA Division I. Despite his young age, Pastner has been involved in basketball at the Division I level for 20 years, as a player and an assistant coach at Arizona, and as an assistant coach and the head coach at Memphis. He has been a part of teams that have won 490 games, played in 17 NCAA Tournaments and 18 total post-season events. Teams he has been involved with have won 12 conference tournament or regular-season championships, advanced to seven Sweet Sixteens, five Elite Eights, two Final Fours and two NCAA championship games. Storylines for Sports Illustrated rates Georgia Tech s defense No. 6 in its pre-season projection of the top 50 defenses in Division I. Ben Lammers (first team) and Josh Okogie (second team) were named to the preseason All-Atlantic Coast Conference team by the media at the conference s annual Operation Basketball media day. Lammers is on the preseason watch lists for the John R. Wooden Award (national player of the year) and the Lute Olson National Player of the Year Award. Lammers is also one of 20 Division I players named to the preseason watch list for the Kareen Abdul Jabbar Award, given annually to the nation s top center. Blue Ribbon Basketball Yearbook projected Georgia Tech to finish ninth in the 15-team ACC, and tabbed Ben Lammers to its All-ACC team. Despite the fact that Georgia Tech lost six seniors from the squad, its top three scorers and two of its top three rebounders from that team - Josh Okogie (16.1 ppg, 5.4 rpg), Ben Lammers (14.2 ppg, 9.2 rpg) and Tadric Jackson (12.1 ppg) - return for Pastner s second season on The Flats. Five players who averaged 10 or more minutes per game return for Georgia Tech is the only ACC team that has three returning players who averaged 12 points or more per game in This year s Georgia Tech team has only two seniors - second-team All-ACC center Ben Lammers and guard Tadric Jackson, who finished second in the ACC Sixth-Man Award voting - and 12 scholarship players altogether. The other holdovers include ACC All-freshman guard Josh Okogie, 6-4 sophomore point guard Justin Moore, 6-9 junior forward Abdoulaye Gueye and 6-10 sophomore center Sylvester Ogbonda. The Yellow Jackets welcome four freshmen and two transfers, and turned over their entire walk-on group, meaning there are 10 new faces on the 16-man roster. Guard Brandon Alston, a graduate transfer from Lehigh University, has two years of eligibility remaining and is eligible to play immediately. Guard Shembari Phillips, a transfer from Tennessee, also has two years of eligibility remaining but must sit out this season. Three other non-conference games will be aired either on the ACC Network or the ACC s Regional Sports (Cable) Network. Every ACC game will be televised. Twenty-seven of Georgia Tech s 31 regular-season games will be broadcast on linear broadcast television, a program record, including all 18 Atlantic Coast Conference games. Fifteen of those 27 televised games will air on one of the ESPN networks. The four remaining games will be streamed live on ACC Network Extra, available on the ESPN app Highlights Georgia Tech played in the NIT for the ninth time, and made it to the finals for the first time since 1971, when the Yellow Jackets lost to North Carolina in the championship game. It was the 25th postseason appearance overall in program history. Tech defeated four top-100 RPI teams in the NIT - Indiana (79), Belmont (60), Ole Miss (77) and CSU Bakersfield (76). TCU was No. 67, and Tech, at No. 106, was the lowestranked team in the NIT final four. Tech won 20 games for the second straight year and for the 16th time in program history. Pastner, Lammers, Okogie Capture ACC Honors Georgia Tech s first-year head coach Josh Pastner was named Atlantic Coast Conference Coach of the Year, and the Yellow Jackets captured their biggest haul of ACC honors in recent memory as junior center Ben Lammers was named second-team All-ACC and conference Defensive Player of the Year, while first-year player Josh Okogie was named to the ACC s All-Freshman Team. It was the first time since 2013 that Tech has had honorees in multiple categories, and also the first time since 2013 that Tech has had more than one individual honored. Pastner, in his first year on The Flats, earned 24 of the 53 votes cast, three times that of the second-place coach. He becomes the third different Tech head man to be named ACC Coach of the Year, joining Bobby Cremins (1983, 1985, 1996) 8

He received the eighth-most votes overall in all-conference balloting. Lammers was the leading vote-getter for the ACC s All-Defensive team and is the fifth Tech player to make that team, but the first to be named ACC Defensive Player of the Year, for which he received 37 of the 53 votes. Lammers came in second to Wake Forest s John Collins in voting for the ACC s Most Improved Player. Okogie, the 15th Yellow Jacket to make the ACC All- Freshman team, was the fourth-leading vote-getter for that team, but only two votes shy of leader Dennis Smith, who received 36 of the 53 votes for ACC Freshman of the Year. Tadric Jackson, a 6-2 junior guard, received four votes for the ACC s Sixth Man of the Year award (second-most), which went to Virginia Tech s Seth Allen in a landslide (43 of 53 votes). Pastner Reaps More Honors First-year Georgia Tech coach Josh Pastner picked up a couple more honors after being named ACC Coach of the Year. He was named District 2 Coach of the Year by the National Association of Basketball Coaches (District 2 covers the ACC footprint and its member institutions), and also was named the John Whack Hyder Georgia College Coach of the Year by the Atlanta Tipoff Club. The Tipoff Club award is named for Whack Hyder, who led Tech s program from After the season, Sports Illustrated honored Pastner as Best At Beating SI s Projections, Major Conference, saying, Last fall, a certain member of the punditry made the now-infamous claim that Pastner was presiding over one of the worst major-conference rosters ever. SI s projection system wasn t that harsh, but it didn t love the Yellow Jackets, ranking them 204th in the preseason. Pastner proceeded to build the nation s No. 6-ranked defense around rim-protector Ben Lammers. That helped Tech upset North Carolina, Notre Dame, Florida State and Syracuse in the regular season, finish as the NIT runner-up and rank 77th in efficiency. ACC Coaches on Tech I cannot say enough, I don t have to say anything -- Josh [Pastner] was coach of the year in the toughest conference in the country -- but I can t say enough really about the job he s done with that team. Their defensive numbers are top 10 in the nation in terms of points per possession. - Belmont coach Rick Byrd following Tech s NIT win on March 19 I don t think you look great too often against Georgia Tech. They scrum the game up. That s the beauty in how they play. - Pittsburgh coach Kevin Stallings following March 7 Tech All-Time vs. the ACC ACC Tournament game They ve done a great job. I think they play with purpose. They know exactly what they re doing. They re a very difficult team to play against. This team beat North Carolina, Florida State, Notre Dame. Those are three top-20 teams, really top- 15 teams. And Josh has done a great job with that team. - Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim It shows that, when you have guys working together, really good coaching, the improvement of players... Josh has done a great job with his staff, and it s a great story. They re five guys playing as one. They re a solid unit that has good concepts offensively and defensively. And then the improvement of a player of Lammers from one year to the other, and Jackson, too. They re great for our league. It shows how strong our league is. - Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski on the Feb. 20 ACC Teleconference Georgia Tech has an outstanding brand that was established by my good friend Bobby Cremins, so it s not a program that s not won. It s a program that won big but hasn t won for a while and they ve locked into that and have that spirit back. - Krzyzewski again I think Josh has done a fabulous job. He s done some really unique things on both ends of the floor. With what they re doing with their triangle stuff offensively is a difficult preparation. It s very, very hard to guard. And then the changing zone defenses and then you ve got the rim protector in (Ben) Lammers back there, they re hard to score against. They re just a really tough preparation and it certainly isn t a fluke. - Notre Dame s Mike Brey on the Feb. 20 ACC Teleconference They were more aggressive, they got the ball where they wanted to get it more than we did. As the game went along, they got more confidence and more confidence. And we got tighter. I didn t expect that and didn t see that coming. But again, their coach did a much better job of getting their guys ready to play than I did. - North Carolina s Roy Williams after Tech s Dec. 31 victory I was really so frustrated about the way we played down there that day. I didn t give them enough credit. They ve had a fantastic year. It s shown. I m hoping they make the NCAA Tournament. - North Carolina s Roy Williams on the Feb. 20 ACC Teleconference Josh has just taken a team that nobody expected to be even competitive, never mind get an NCAA berth, (to tournament consideration). It s great to see because Josh is a tremendous young man and he s doing an outstanding job. - Louisville coach Rick Pitino I said after the first time we played them that they were better than people realized, and it s proven to be true. They re good. I said that this team was more talented than people realized. Ben Lammers is one of the best centers in our league. Defensively he s a problem around the rim, blocking shots, altering shots. Josh Okogie s one of the best freshmen in our league, and he s continued to get better. 10 GAME NOTES TECH NOTEBOOK their team, doesn t make mistakes, doesn t turn the ball over. Quinton Stephens is a senior who s been through the wars of this league, and is quietly averaging 12 and 8. Tadric Jackson is one of those big, strong guards that s a problem. They don t have as much depth as some of the teams in our league, but they re starting five or six is very good. Josh and his staff have done a great job of creating a system that they can be successful in. - Clemson s Brad Brownell He s doing a phenomenal job. He hired a really good staff. Ben Lammers is going to be the most improved player in the league. [Josh Okogie] may be one of the freshman of the year if you take out the one-and-dones. Josh has gone a tremendous job of getting them to play together. I don t think they were picked last because of their talent, but Josh and his staff have done a tremendous job of maxing out that talent. Georgia Tech is constantly changing defenses. They play every kind of zone there is, and they do a good job of keeping teams from getting into a flow. - Virginia Tech s Buzz Williams I think Josh Pastner is doing a great job for that team. They started out with a bang, and he has them playing at a very high level. - Wake Forest s Danny Manning Josh Pastner and his staff have done an amazing job. The players have really embraced the schemes, both offensively and defensively. Ben Lammers has got to be seriously considered for most improved player in the league. Josh Heath has done a tremendous job of orchestrating what they are doing at both ends of the floor. Josh Okogie is really something, reminds me of Josh Hart from Villanova the way he plays. Miami head coach Jim Larranaga...You ve got to go back and guard that action because they run it for 25 seconds and they re not shooting jump shots. They re coming at your throat with stuff. So it s physical, it s grinding, it s exhausting. - Notre Dame s Mike Brey on Tech s OFFENSE following Notre Dame win on Feb. 26 The Laminator is Everywhere Ben Lammers came a long way from being a dependable reserve post player for Georgia Tech, his role as a sophomore, to being one of the best big men in the country in , one who exerted a major influence on both ends of the floor in every game. He became only the fourth Tech center to earn All-Atlantic Coast Conference honors when he was named second-team All-ACC, and he was also voted the ACC s Defensive Player of the Year. After playing all 36 games in in relief of seniors Charles Mitchell and Nick Jacobs, the 6-10 junior flourished in the Yellow Jackets four-out, one-in system, piling up 16 doubledoubles and 31 double-digit scoring efforts in He came up short of double digits in points just six times. Lammers finished the season as the nation s No. 3 shot blocker, averaging 3.38 per game. He also was the ACC s fourth-leading rebounder (9.2 per game), ranked 22nd in the ACC in scoring average (14.2 points per game) and No. 5 in field goal percentage (51.6 pct.). His jump of 10.6 points per game in his scoring average over the previous season was the third-best in the ACC behind John Collins of Wake Forest and Matt Farrell of Notre Dame (11.7). But he also tripled his career rebound average entering the season, tripled his average minutes played and doubled his career number in blocked shots. The player who averaged less than 15 minutes per game last year averaged 35.4 overall, 36.6 minutes in ACC games, including five 40-minute games. He ranked No. 4 in the ACC in that category. Josh 1.0 Freshman Josh Okogie put together the kind of season that rivaled some of the best freshmen in Georgia Tech history. The 6-4 guard became the seventh Tech freshman in program history to lead the Yellow Jackets in scoring, posting the sixth-best scoring average (16.1 ppg) for a freshman in program history, and the highest since Dion Glover (18.4 ppg) in Okogie accumulated 596 points over 37 games. Only two other freshmen in Tech history - Kenny Anderson (722), Stephon Marbury (679) scored more. He passed Mark Price (568 in ) against CSU Bakersfield. The Snellville, Ga., product won ACC Rookie of the Week honors four times, including three times in ACC play - after scoring 26 points to lead Tech over No. 9 North Carolina, after scoring 27 in a victory at NC State, and again after he rang up 35 with 14 rebounds in the Jackets victory over No. 6 Florida State. He also earned the honor after 38-point outburst Nov. 26 against Tulane, which was a record for a Tech freshman. He posted five games of 20-plus in ACC action (also 23 at Wake Forest and 25 in the Jackets second meeting vs. NC State). He reached double figures in every ACC game but one. Okogie ranked 11th in the conference in scoring average vs. ACC teams (17.1 ppg) during regular-season play. He connected on 48.1 percent of his shots from the floor, 42.9 percent from three-point range and 74.0 percent from the foul line. He averaged 5.8 rebounds in ACC games. He got to the free throw line a team-high 241 times, tied for the second-most in Tech history, and his 180 free throws made tied for third-most. He ranked third in the ACC in free throw attempts per game at 6.5, and got to the line an average of 6.8 times in ACC games GEORGIA TECH BASKETBALL GAME NOTES Action Jackson When Tadric Jackson is healthy and playing well, he makes a difference for the Georgia Tech with his ability to penetrate, handle the ball and score in traffic. In Tech s offensive schemes, Jackson is a scoring threat as a shooter, as a driver and by posting up inside. The 6-2 junior became one of the top reserves in program history last season, averaging 12.1 points while connecting on 44.6 percent of his shots from the floor, and 32.5 percent from three-point range, both well above his career norms of 32.2 percent overall and 21.9 percent from distance. He became the fourth reserve in Tech history to average in double figures, and posted the highest scoring average by a Tech reserve since Glen Rice, Jr. (13.0 ppg) in Jackson scored 20 or more points four times in Tech s last 16 games of the season, three of them victories. He set career highs twice with 25 points against Notre Dame and 29 against Boston College, then hit for 20 against Syracause and Tech s second meeting vs. Notre Dame. Pastner s Winning Staff Head coach Josh Pastner and all three assistant coaches played major conference Division I basketball - Eric Reveno at Stanford ( ), Tavaras Hardy at Northwestern ( ), Darryl LaBarrie at Georgia Tech and Pastner at Arizona ( ). Tech s coaching staff has participated in 32 NCAA Tournaments collectively - Reveno has been involved in eight NCAA Tournaments as a coach and one as a player; Hardy in three as a coach; LaBarrie in two as a coach and one as a player; and Pastner in 13 as a coach and four as a player. Pastner hired two former Georgia Tech players - assistant coach LaBarrie, who played three years under Bobby Cremins and Paul Hewitt ( ) and was an assistant coach for two years under Hewitt ( ), and director of player personnel Mario West, a non-scholarship player under Hewitt ( ) who played two years in the NBA. Only two members of Pastner s staff at Memphis, director of recruiting and compliance Julian Swartz and director of scouting Tyler Benson, followed him to Georgia Tech. All three assistant coaches are new to Pastner s staff. Five Tech Alumni on NBA Rosters Since 1982, Georgia Tech has produced 18 first-round NBA draft picks and 45 draft picks overall. A total of 38 Georgia Tech alumni have played in the NBA. Five former Georgia Tech basketball stars were on NBA rosters when the season began. Marcus Georges-Hunt, a 2016 graduate, made the opening roster for the Minnesota Timberwolves after seeing limited action late last season with the Orlando Magic. Iman Shumpert, a six-year NBA veteran, is in his third full season in Cleveland after helping the Cavaliers win the NBA championship in Thaddeus Young, in his 11th season, is in his second season with the Indiana Pacers after two years in Brooklyn. Derrick Favors has emerged as a key figure in his seventh season in Utah. Jarrett Jack, a 13-year NBA veteran who suffered a knee injury two season ago while with Brooklyn, played only briefly with the New Orleans Pelicans late last season and is now with the New York Knicks. Arts and Letters Beginning with Moe Miller and Lance Storrs in the summer of 2011, every four-year senior in the Georgia Tech program has graduated. Derek Craig and Nick Foreman received their Tech degrees in 2012, as did the 2013 senior class of Mfon Udofia, who finished his business administation degree work in the summer, and Pierre Jordan, who completed his Masters degree requirements in building construction in the spring. Brandon Reed graduated in the summer with his management degree before transferring back to Arkansas State to play his final year of basketball. All three of Tech s four-year seniors in Kammeon Holsey, Daniel Miller and Jason Morris - graduated that spring. Robert Sampson, the Jackets only undergraduate scholarship senior in , graduated in the spring. From the squad, Marcus Georges-Hunt walked the stage at commencement in May, accomplishing the rare feat of graduating in four years. 11 TECH NOTEBOOK GEORGIA TECH BASKETBALL Welcome to The Hank Georgia Tech has played five seasons in McCamish Pavilion, which was for all intents and purposes, brand new when it opened for the season. The only physical elements of McCamish Pavilion that remain from the venerable Alexander Memorial Coliseum are the roof, which was re-covered, and the 32 steel ribs that support it. The capacity of McCamish Pavilion is 8,600, including 1,665 seats in the new balcony level and 6,935 seats in the lower seating bowl. There are no suites, but there is a premium club area that seats 500. Alexander Memorial Coliseum seated 9,191 spectators in its final configuration. The most impressive features of McCamish Pavilion are its grand entrance, which fronts 10th and Fowler Streets, the ability for patrons to view the court from the main concourse all the way around, and the theatrical lighting system, which concentrates light on the court while leaving the seating areas dark, modeled after the Staples Center in Los Angeles and Madison Square Garden in New York. Tech played 55 seasons in Alexander Memorial Coliseum, compiling a record of (.741). Miami was the last team to play Tech in Alexander Memorial Coliseum, a game Tech won, and was the first ACC team to play in McCamish Pavilion on Jan. 5, which Miami won. For the season, Tech played its home games at Philips Arena and the Arena at Gwinnett. Coaches on McCamish Pavilion Tremendous atmosphere. Golly. We love the opportunity to play in the NIT but, as a lot of you know, sometimes places don t get as excited about that as they ought to. This place was excited about an NIT game and it was a great atmosphere. - Belmont coach Rick Byrd following Tech s NIT win on March 19 Well first of all, it was a great atmosphere and a fun place to play a game. It is my first time in this facility. - North Texas coach Grant McCasland on Nov. 24 The student section was great; the crowd was great. It s been great that the crowd came out. And I tell you, even coach [Tom] Crean said this at shootaround today because he [was the analyst for] our game today [on ESPN2], he mentioned the crowd and the atmosphere. He said this is one of the best home-court advantages that we ve got in the country that he s been around. - Tech coach Josh Pastner following Northwestern victory Nov. 28 Tech s NCAA Tournament History Georgia Tech played in the NCAA Tournament five times in 11 seasons under head coach Paul Hewitt and has played in the event 16 times in its history. Fifteen of those appearances have occurred from 1985 to the present. Tech has a record of in NCAA Tournament play, highlighted by its 2004 trip to the NCAA title game as well as a Final Four berth in The Yellow Jackets have reached the NCAA Sweet 16 seven times (1960, 1985, 1986, 1990, 1992, 1996, 2004). The 2004 and 2005 appearances were the Yellow Jackets first back-to-back appearances since Bobby Cremins led the Institute to the Big Dance nine straight years from Georgia Tech has won at least one game in 11 of its 16 NCAA Tournament appearances. Tech s ACC Tournament History Georgia Tech has played in 38 ACC Tournaments, and has a all-time record in the event. 12 BIO UPDATES GEORGIA TECH BASKETBALL GAME NOTES GAME NOTES Head Coach Josh Pastner 2nd season Josh Pastner, who guided Memphis to five post-season berths in seven seasons as the Tigers head coach, was introduced as Georgia Tech s 14th head basketball coach on April 8, 2016, and wasted no time in getting the Yellow Jackets back to the post-season. In his first season at the helm, his Yellow Jacket team defied all pre-season expectations by winning 21 games, including four in the National Invitation Tournament. Tech posted an 8-10 ACC record, which included victories over No. 9 North Carolina, No. 6 Florida State and No. 14 Notre Dame, who all finished among the top four in the ACC regular season. He was named Coach of the Year in the ACC and in NABC District 2. Pastner also was honored at the Most Positive College Coach in Georgia by Positive Athlete Georgia, an organization which promotes the benefits of positivity among young athletes. Implementing a high-energy style of play and creative offensive and defensive schemes, Pastner and his staff guided the Yellow Jackets all the way to the finals of the NIT for the first time in 46 years. Two of his players earned all-atlantic Coast Conference honors; junior center Ben Lammers was named second-team All-ACC and ACC Defensive Player of the Year, while freshman guard Josh Okogie was named to the ACC All-Freshman team. At the same time, Pastner tirelessly promoted the program on campus and throughout the city of Atlanta in an effort to re-create the atmosphere that surrounded the Yellow Jackets throughout the 1980s, 1990s and into the middle of the 2000s. The result was a programrecord 17 home wins at McCamish Pavilion, which sold out three times in the regular season and became a big homecourt advantage for the Jackets during their NIT run. Pastner, who turned 40 in late September, compiled a record over seven seasons as the head coach at Memphis, where the Tigers earned bids to the NCAA Tournament four times. He tied for the 10th most wins for a head coach in his first seven seasons in Division I basketball history, and is the second winningest active coach under the age of 40 in NCAA Division I. He is the 14th head coach in Tech s program history. Despite his young age, Pastner has been involved in basketball at the Division I level for 20 years, as a player and an assistant coach at Arizona, and as an assistant coach and the head coach at Memphis. He has been a part of teams that have won 511 games, played in 17 NCAA Tournaments and 19 total post-season events. Teams he has been involved with have won 12 conference tournament or regular-season championships, advanced to seven Sweet Sixteens, five Elite Eights, two Final Fours and two NCAA championship games. As an NCAA head or assistant coach and an AAU head coach, he has coached nearly 25 NBA draft selections. Pastner s Memphis teams averaged 23.9 wins per season and compiled a conference regular-season record of 82-36, including a conference winning streak of 28 games. The Tigers went 11-4 in Conference USA and American Athletic Conference tournaments, including three championships. He guided Memphis to five post-season berths, the NIT in 2010 and the NCAA Tournament in 2011, 2012, 2013 and Pastner twice won Conference USA Coach of the Year honors (2010, 2013) by various organizations and news media. A native of Kingwood, Texas, Pastner was born in Glen Dale, W.Va. He earned his bachelor s degree in family studies in December of 1998, in just two and a half years, from Arizona and his master s degree in teaching and teacher education from Arizona in December of 1999, all while lettering four years in basketball for the Wildcats under head coach Lute Olson. He married the former Kerri Lamas of Sierra Vista, Ariz., in He has a stepson (Ethan) and three daughters, Payten, Kamryn and Harper.
