2 Scouting The Generals W&L Quickly: Washington & Lee enters the 2017 season after posting a 6-4 overall record, including a 5-2 mark in the ODAC. The Generals closed the season with a win against Shenandoah. A Rush to Judgement: No secret to what the Generals will do offensively as Washington & Lee s option offense has led the nation in rushing in each of the last two years. W&L averaged yards per game in 2015 and yards per game last season. Since 2010, W&L has finished no lower than sixth in the nation in rushing offense. While the Generals must replace more than 72% of their rushing yards and nearly 95% of their passing yards from last season, there is still plenty of returning firepower. Senior Matt Sgro gets his chance to run the offense this season; he has rushed for 435 yards and two scores in 25 career games played. The top returning running back is senior Walker Brand, who earned Third Team All-ODAC honors last season and has rushed for more than 1,400 yards and 10 touchdowns in his career. Garrett Headlines Experienced Defense: Senior linebacker Max Garrett, a two-time First Team All-ODAC selection, is the top returning player on a defense that returns seven starters from last season. Garrett posted 109 tackles a year ago and plays just in front of safeties Michael Shields and Thomas Freeland and cornerback Greg Reames, who have combined for more than 400 career tackles and 15 interceptions. Notes of Interest: Washington & Lee has won its last three season-openers at home The Generals are 29-6 in their last 35 home games dating back to 2010 In the last seven seasons, Washington & Lee has rushed for 400+ yards in 31 games and the Generals are 29-2 in those 31 W&L was one of the highest scoring fourth-quarter teams in the nation last season as the Generals scored 105 of their 339 points in the fourth period in W&L Schedule/Results Sept. 1 Johns Hopkins 7 pm 9 Sewanee 1 pm Claremont-Mudd Scripps 4 pm Emory & Henry * 1 pm Oct. 7 Washington St. Louis 12 pm 14 Guilford * 1 pm Hampden-Sydney * 1 pm Randolph-Macon * 1 pm Nov. 4 Bridgewater * 1 pm Shenandoah * 1 pm * ODAC Game Oh Captain, My Captain: Johns Hopkins will be led this season by senior co-captains Brett Caggiano, Anthony Campanile, Ryan Cary, Keonte Henson and Michael Munday. Even more impressive? Hopkins was the last team in the league to win its first title (2002), but the first to get to 10 championships. Playoff Bound: With the 2016 Centennial Conference title came an automatic bid to the NCAA Playoffs. Hopkins made its sixth straight trip to the NCAAs, seventh in eight years and eighth overall. The 37-game run is the longest streak in league history and the longest active conference winning streak in all divisions of NCAA college football. 3 Head Coach Jim Margraff Jim Margraff (JHU 82) is in his 28th season as the head coach at Homewood and ranks as the all-time winningest coach in school history with an overall record of (.700). Margraff has guided the Blue Jays to some of the greatest seasons and moments in program history with the last several years among the best of the best. Johns Hopkins has a combined record of 63-7 since the start of the 2011 season, counts eight straight Centennial Conference titles to its credit, has qualified for the NCAAs seven times in the last eight years and has been ranked in the top 25 in the nation every week since the start of the 2011 season. The recent run of success for Johns Hopkins began in 2002, when Margraff directed the Blue Jays to a then school-record nine wins, a share of the Centennial title and an ECAC Championship. Since then, Hopkins has won 12 Centennial titles, made eight trips to the NCAA Playoffs and won four ECAC Championships. The 12 Centennial titles are the most of any team in league history and have come in a span of just 15 seasons. To put this all in perspective, consider that the 200 wins JHU has accumulated under Jim Margraff are 31 more than Hopkins accumulated in the 50 previous years combined ( ). In addition, JHU had never played a post-season game in its history before 2002 and hadn t won a conference title of any kind since 1969 before Margraff s Blue Jays grabbed the 2002 CC championship.
